Welcome to Issue 9
It has been a busy few months since the last
newsletter and it is hard to believe the end of the
year is almost upon us. The Medical Deans Annual
Conference hosted by the University of
Wollongong was a great success, with
presentations and discussion on a range of
significant issues, an informative tour of the
Innovation Campus and a very enjoyable Conference Dinner overlooking
Wollongong Harbour.
The President and I recently met with the Martin Bowles, Secretary,
Department of Health and other senior departmental officers. We
discussed the development of a teaching and training classification and
its potential impact on clinical training capacity, the Medical Research
Future Fund and rollout of the Integrated Rural Pipeline Initiatives. An
announcement on the regional training hubs is expected soon and the
Department is keen to work with Medical Deans to ensure the successful
implementation of this important initiative.
Medical Deans have also been working with the Health Workforce
Principal Committee (HWPC) on the Review of Medical Intern Training
recommendation on graduate work readiness. The joint forum in
September was attended by representatives from medical schools,
Commonwealth, State and Territory Health Departments, postgraduate
medical councils, employers, doctors in training, the AMC and the MBA.
The Summary of Proceedings document is attached. The Sub Committee
which is jointly chaired by Medical Deans and HWPC will continue to
work on these issues.
Finally can I thank everyone for the support and assistance you have
provided me over the last 12 months. I would particularly like to thank
Medical Deans President, Professor Nicholas Glasgow who is retiring at
the end of the year, for his leadership, wise counsel and patience (see
article page 2).
I hope everyone has a happy and safe festive season and I look forward
to a productive 2017.

collaboration across professions
Members of the Medical Deans Executive recently
met with Professor Woods to provide some initial
input. A consultation paper about the review will
be released in the new year with submissions to
follow.
