Issue 8 - Wednesday 26th June 2019 REPORTS HOME Welcome to our final newsletter for term two. We are now halfway through the year and reports will be ready to be distributed on Tuesday 2 nd July. Teachers have worked hard to ensure these reports are valid and represent the students progress for the first half of the year. Some teachers may have requested an interview on the reports, I urge parents to take up this offer to work together to achieve the best outcomes for the students. GOLDEN JUBILEE Many of you would be aware that Walliston Primary School is celebrating its 50 th Anniversary in 2020. A team of volunteers are working hard to coordinate a number of events including unveiling part of the STW9 Communications Tower and finding out what is inside the time capsule. All this will occur on March 28 th 2020 at our Golden Jubilee Community Day”. You can find out more information throughout the year on our school website under our new Golden Logo”. STAFF CHANGES Recently, Room 1 parents were informed that Mrs Thomson will be taking leave for Semester 2 of 2019, followed by announcing her retirement at the end of the year. Mrs Thompson is the heart of our school community for many years and more information about recognising Mrs Thomsons commitment to educating our students will be communicated later in time. To keep the school community updated, I would like to inform parents that Melinda Field will be the new teacher for Room 8. Tracey Giglia will be the new teacher for Room 1 and Larissa Wake will be the new teacher to replace Mrs Giglia in Room 3. In our next newsletter we will introduce our new staff by sharing a little bit about them and welcome them to the Walliston community. I would also like to say farewell and a big thanks to Pieter our school gardener who is finishing up this week. Pieter has tackled our ovals, gardens, watering, handyman, repairs and other duties with a commitment to make our school grounds look at a high standard and we wish him all the best on his next adventure. 2020 ENROLMENTS Enrolments are now open to enrol your child for 2020. If your child is 4 years old by 30 June 2020, then you can apply to enrol your child in Kindergarten. At Walliston Primary School we enrol families, not just students and we have a number of new enrolments already for 2020, which is great for the growth of our school. HOT CHOCOLATE WAS A WINNER Maybe not for the carpets, but a fun night was coordinated by our school captains and Mr Wilson in coordinating hot chocolate and popcorn for over 110 students, who were allowed to stay up late and watch a movie at school. A big thank you to our student leaders for organising the night and raising funds to go towards our Circus WAMO award day next week. WINTER BREAK Next term students will commence school on Tuesday 23 rd July. Staff will be attending a planning day on Monday 22 nd July, looking at school planning for the whole school. Enjoy the school holiday break, try and keep warm and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school with a clean bill of health. Regards, Craig Mainard From the Acting Principals Desk A Farewell Choir Concert will be held on Friday 5th July 2.30 pm - (last day of term) for Mrs Levy and Mrs Thomson. All are invited to attend.

CHAPLAIN CHAT

A big THANK YOU to the Year 6 Leaders, parents, staff and students for

helping make the movie night a success. We raised over $400 for the WAMO reward day being organized for the end of term. We had over 100 students attend the movie night where we watched ‘Christopher Robin’ ate some movie snacks and had a good time. The Year 6 leaders

program plans, organizes and runs an event each term, next term we hope to offer a hot chocolate and cookie event as a fundraiser and hope to have a cupcake day in term 4. We look forward to an exciting semester 2. Thank you Adrian Wilson School chaplain

The purpose of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen/ Garden Foundation is to introduce pleasurable food education to children

during their learning years, in order to form positive food habits for life. As a qualified chef in my previous career I have enjoyed the opportunity to help in the kitchen as part of the program. Each week a small group of students take a turn in the kitchen learning safety, knife skills, hygiene and basic food preparation skills. Pleasurable food education emphasizes the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal, delicious foods grown at the school in our garden. This week the garden team presented us with some lovely fresh kale, both from the school garden and Mrs Pettitt’s garden at home. We washed, prepped, chopped and seasoned the kale on a tray, cooked for 10 minutes at 175 degrees and served up warm to the class as ‘kale chips’. The recipe we used was basic but tasty…..

Ingredients: 1 bunch of kale 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of ‘all purpose seasoning’

Method: Wash well and dry thoroughly the bunch of kale Remove the storks and cut into 3 cm length bits Dress with olive oil and seasoning Mix well Spread out on cooking trays Cook in the oven for 10 minutes at 175 degrees C Allow to cool for a few minutes and enjoy J

A simple and healthy snack that students can make at home, quite easily with one bunch of kale. The fun part is that students could use a variety of ingredients to make different flavoured chips each time.

Thank you Adrian Wilson School Chaplain

COME AND JOIN US AT THURSDAY PLAYGROUP!

We are so fortunate at Walliston PS to have a wonderful Playgroup program that has been running for over 10 years. This year it is being run by Laurien, a qualified Early Childhood teacher and Sarah Greenway. They provide interactive and fun experiences for children 0-4 years of age as well as lots of sensory activities and PLAY! They would love for more Walliston families to join them. Each session costs only $2 per family and you do not have to attend each week. Please contact Laurien ([email protected]) if you would like further information and visit the'Walliston Primary School Playgroup' Facebook page to see some of the fabulous fun parents and children have on Thursday mornings.

Cricket Incursion On Wednesday 12th June a Cricket Development Officer visited the school and took each class for a skills session. The students really enjoyed the activities and are looking forward to a further visit next term when they will return to promote the local cricket club and give students the opportunity to further develop their cricket skills. Our band has taken off and all members

are displaying our school values while having fun at the same time. We can’t wait to show everyone what music we have been making when we perform at our music assembly in term 4. I have been so happy to see the dedication and commitment from students and members of our school community in making our school band successful.

The pre-primary children have been talking about

reptiles and snakes in particular for over a term.

There were many whole class discussions and

viewings of snake videos. Children also had their

own snake discussions and poured over reptile

books from our wonderful library during

Investigation Time. They have had a Jungle

Dramatic Play area filled with (toy) reptiles that has

been very popular.

On Thursday the 20th, we finally had a reptile

incursion! Children were counting the “sleeps” and

the excitement level was extremely high! Lisa from

Perth Hills Reptile Removals brought in a collection

of reptiles to room 15 and answered many of the

children’s questions. Children who wanted to hold

the reptiles were able to do so! Children were able

to handle a Stimson Python, a Pygmy Python and a

Carpet Python as well as a bob tail and a blue

tongue lizard. Lisa also showed the class a frill

necked lizard. It was a wonderful experience and

generated much discussion and further interest!

Walliston Primary P&C News

Grounds & Maintenance Did you Know? As part of our P&C Committee this year, Scott Parker has taken on the role for Grounds & Maintenance. Wherever possible, we try and assist the School in any odd jobs that the School may not have extra budget to tend to. For example, the beautiful new bike parking behind the Uniform shop is thanks to Scott, some Vinci gravel donations and a whole heap of extra hands to get it done.

Scott has also sourced extra garden beds for the school gardens, with two more on their way. A big thank you to Nutrarich for supplying a very generous amount of mature compost for the gardens.

Next on the list is moving some seating within the school to allow somewhere to sit between the netball court and playground.

CALL-OUT FOR HELPERS! There will be lots to be done to beautify the grounds before the 50th jubilee next year, so please give your name to the ladies in the front office if we can call on you for some help here and there. Thank you!

Woolworths Earn and Learn Now you’ve done the shopping – please remember to get your stickers into the box in the office

so they count!! Set yourself a calendar reminder to pop them in by Friday!

Uniform Shop Thank you to all the parents for supporting the P&C Uniform Shop. We have had many exciting changes this year already, with online ordering now available at www.wallistonuniformshop.ecwid.com and the Uniform Shop open every Thursday morning during Term from 8:45am – 9:15am.

The P&C is proud to keep our uniform prices low and supply high quality garments. To date this year, our profits have been $1185 which is currently re-invested back into the Uniform Shop stock.

Keep an eye out for more changes at the Uniform Shop in Term 3, including: SECOND-HAND UNIFORMS Will be available at the Uniform Shop and will be a reduced price, based on item and quality – essentially an Op Shop to browse through when you come to purchase uniforms. However, we are currently low on second-hand uniform items from our new uniform style, given such a recent change. If your child has outgrown their uniform or is leaving the school, it is greatly appreciated if you could donate the items to the Uniform Shop as the proceeds go back to helping our students.

UNIFORM SHOP RE-VAMP: Over the holidays we will be doing a clean-out of the P&C Shed (Uniform Shop) and organising our items. If you are free to help out, please keep an eye out on the P&C Facebook page for when we will be there. This will include putting in extra shelving / cupboards and sorting items into tubs. If you have any large plastic tubs (min 40L) not in use, and you would like to donate, please see Colby at the Uniform Shop on Thursday mornings.

Fundraising We have had a fantastic roller coaster ride of fundraisers this first half of the year and we would like to reassure you, that all the blood, sweat and tears, has been worth it!!!

So far, your baking, sausage sizzling, stall selling and buying, quizzing efforts has raised approximately $11,000!!!

These funds have contributed towards helping the School with our Chaplaincy program, Therapy Focus, Home Readers, bus expenses, the BUZ program, Community Kitchen Garden project, PLUS a myriad of other contributions yet to be paid during the remainder of the year.

We will have a fantastic Father’s Day Raffle coming out to you as soon as school is back for Term 3; Father’s Day stall scheduled for Wednesday, August 27

th and Book Fair in conjunction with Open Night on Wednesday September 4

th – Please mark it in your diaries!

We will need different people to help out with the Father’s Day Stall and Book Fair / Open night displays please! If you have, even an hour to spare, please email [email protected] to let us know what you can do to help. Also we are collecting donations for the Fathers’ Day Stall, all donations much appreciated!

Thank You! From all at your P&C Committee, thank you once again for your support, wishing you happy and safe holidays and we look forward to seeing you for Term 3!

The Faction Cross Country took place on Thursday, 13th June. Congratulations to all students who practiced hard for the event to do well for their faction and the way you competed

on the day. Thank you to the numerous students who helped with setting up the course in between showers during the morning and those of our school community who helped pack up in the rain, at the end of the carnival. Mr Levy Phys-Ed Specialist
