    Issue 8, Term 2, Week 6, Thursday 4 June 2015 SACRED HEART COLLEGE

    From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community,

    Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat (Excerpts from the Liturgy prepared by Mr Daniel Head, Director of Marist Mission SHC Senior School) Saturday 6 June is 175 years since Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, died. 6 June is the day the Catholic Church celebrates his “Feast Day”, which is a day to celebrate special people in Church history. However, Marcellin didn’t like a big deal being made about him. He wouldn’t even let the Brothers have his portrait painted while he was still alive. The one pictured to the right was painted a few hours after death! So, today’s liturgy is about Marcellin’s dream, rather than Marcellin himself - it’s how Marcellin would have wanted it.

    Water from the Rock is a book written collectively by Marists from around the world. It is a statement of what Marists believe, as part of their spirituality: Jesus lives out his mission by both word and witness. In his relationships Jesus transcends boundaries of religion and culture. For the people we meet each day we seek to be reflections of God. In some mysterious way, God works through us and in us. Despite our limitations our goodness is able to come through. (Water from the Rock, 136–137)

  • The Marist response can be lived out on a local scale (such as relationships with each other at Sacred Heart College), a community scale (such as the projects we undertake including the Helping Hands project on Monday), and a global scale (such as our Immersion Trips). In recognising and celebrating the feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, we also celebrate the work of all who have contributed to our fine College - the Marist Brothers, staff, parents, students and Old Scholars. Sacred Heart College is what it is because of the founding charism of St Marcellin and the driving force this continues to provide! This will also be witnessed at our special celebration next Friday for the Feast of the Sacred Heart. We are delighted that Bishop Eugene Hurley, Bishop of Darwin and Sacred Heart Old Collegian, is able to lead us in the Eucharist. Please note the invitation to all members of the community- you are most welcome to join us! Government Education 'versus' Catholic and Independent Schools In recent times the media has been most selective, and in my view somewhat misleading, in representing stories around the quality and funding of education in Australia. The current angle is to suggest that Catholic and Independent Schools make no difference on the educational outcomes of young people. For those interested in something more substantial in terms factual synopsis you might like to spend a few minutes on the following article: http://theconversation.com/private-catholic-schools-do-add-value-to-students-results-42543

    Jacob Murphy (RIP) Earlier this year we shared the tragic loss of Jacob in a car accident which occurred not far from his home and involved the vehicle running off the road and colliding with a tree. The College has been contacted by Jacob's parents, Chris and Tresche, and they have asked if we'd be able to put a note out in the newsletter about the coroner's findings which they have received recently. The coroner found that Jacob had the accident due to an anaphylactic reaction to a hopper ant bite and that there were no other factors involved. This of course is of little consolation but does help explain what occurred. The Murphy family remain in our prayers and thoughts!

  • Join us in Celebration, Friday 12 June 2015 You are cordially invited to join with us as we celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Sacred Heart and the amalgamation of Sacred Heart College Senior and Middle Schools. Bishop Eugene Hurley will conduct the Mass at the Netball SA Stadium, 155 Railway Terrace, Mile End South on Friday 12 June at 11 am.

  • Car Park Spaces for People with Disabilities The College respectfully requests that members of our community who do not hold a Disability Parking Permit, refrain from parking in those car park spaces set aside for people with disabilities. There are a number of members of our community who rely on access to these spaces, and on a number of occasions in recent weeks, cars have been parked in those spaces, without displaying the necessary pass. Thank you in advance for the consideration we show to all members of our community.

  • Cyber Safety Parent/Carer Information Night Sacred Heart College will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on Thursday 11 June 2015 at 7pm in the Music & Performance Centre at Sacred Heart College Middle School. All parents and carers of students from the Middle School and Senior School are encouraged to attend. This will be a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about how young people have fun online, how you can help them to stay in control on the net, and how to report a problem.

    The presentation, which will last for an hour with half plus an hour at the end for questions, is tailored for the adult audience and we ask that young people are not present. Topics covered include how young people are using technology to have fun, online grooming, cyber-bullying, inappropriate content and eSecurity. The purpose of this presentation is to raise awareness of the issues facing young people online including:

    Technologies and apps popular with children and young people;

    Privacy management;

    Scams, fraud and identity theft;

    Online grooming;

    Sexting;

    Cyber-bullying;

    Reputation management;

    Where to go if things go wrong;

    Steps to improve cyber safety and security. ThinkUKnow is centred on three key areas: how youth use and enjoy technology, the challenges they may be exposed to, and how to prevent and report when things go wrong. The presentation will discuss the popular applications used by young people, the risks they may be exposed to and how to minimise these risks, and finally where to report problems. The parents, carers and teachers’ session includes short videos and real life case studies. Take home resources on the issues outlined above will also be provided and can be downloaded from the ThinkUKnow

    website, www.thinkuknow.org.au . For more information, you can visit the ThinkUKnow Australia website at www.thinkuknow.org.au or contact Joe Millemaci by email at [email protected]

    We look forward to seeing you all at the presentation.

  • MIDDLE SCHOOL

    From the Head of the Middle School As you read this I will returning from the Year 9 Camp to the Bendleby Ranges and I thought I would take this opportunity to sincerely thank the staff and volunteers who have helped plan, organise and supervise both this camp and the Year 7 Camp (Canberra/Mittagong.) Huge amounts of time and effort goes into getting these events up and running - I know we will all be looking forward to a few creature comforts on Friday evening!

    I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents and carers who responded to the recent Parent/Carer Feedback Survey, see summary below. There were four significant findings from the survey that will help shape how we move forward and after camp I will organise a forum for interested parents/carers to attend.

    Parent Survey Feedback

    The majority of parents felt that there were opportunities to engage with the school mainly through sport, the canteen and chapel masses. It was also very clear that work commitments were the greatest factor in inhibiting further involvement in the school.

    There were some parents who felt there should be opportunities made available in areas outside of sport and the canteen. Other parents, particularly those new to the school would like to see more social events to help the formation of creating new friends and meeting a wider group of parents.

    Many parents felt that they could contribute to the life of the school sharing expertise and experience in areas such as: IT, History, Counselling, Fitness, Medicine, Sport Science, Numeracy, Education, Fundraising, Nursing, Jewellery Making, Music and Finance.

    In relation to the needs that parents would like addressed or further support with, the following were the most evident:

    (a) Resilience and personal growth (b) Boys and boys’ learning styles (c) ICT and the use of Chromebooks and Google

    Kind regards

    Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

  • MacBeth: Undone by Bell Shakespeare On Thursday 21 May the Year 9 students had the chance to view a Bell Shakespeare production called Macbeth: Undone. In English this term we have been Learning about Shakespeare and why his works are still relevant to us today. One of the important things we have focused on is the fact that Shakespeare’s plays were meant to be viewed through performance, not read. Macbeth Undone allowed us to see exactly what this meant. The performance was funny, sad, thrilling and surprising. We saw how using simple props, expression, tone and body language can help add meaning to the story. The play was a great experience for all and provided an engaging learning opportunity to further our understanding of the works of William Shakespeare.

  • Year 9s Teaching Italian at St Bernadette’s Primary School Over the past three weeks, our Year 9 students of Italian have taken on the role of Italian teacher at St Bernadette’s Primary School. Each week our students were expected to write a detailed teaching plan and create appropriate resources which they utilised to teach their topic to the Year 1 and Year 2 students. Presenting in pairs, the boys’ topics this term were:

    Colours and Numbers to 100

    Family Members

    Body Parts

    Farm and Zoo Animals Our boys represented the Middle School with pride, interacting with the younger students in a most professional and appropriate manner. The younger students clearly enjoyed their lessons and found them to be very interactive and entertaining. Deb Skewes Italian Teacher

  • Mindfulness In recent years, Mindfulness Meditation has surged in popularity for use in the treatment of stress, resilience, anxiety, depression and other physical and mental illnesses. Highly regarded institutions such as UCLA, Harvard, Oxford, Monash and Melbourne Universities have developed clinical studies into the positive impacts of Mindfulness Meditation. Mindfulness is about training yourself to pay attention to the here and now. When a person is mindful, they focus on the present moment, try not to think about anything that went on in the past or that might be coming up in future and purposefully concentrate on what’s happening around them. When you are mindful, it:

    helps clear your head

    helps you be more aware of yourself, your body and the environment

    helps to slow down your thoughts

    slows down your nervous system

    helps you to concentrate

    helps you relax

    can help you cope with stress Mindfulness is something that everyone can develop, and it’s something that everyone can try. You can increase your mindfulness in everyday life, through activities like meditation, prayer and yoga. Simply slowing down and paying more attention to your senses and your immediate environment and taking the time to smell the roses are excellent ways to become more mindful and start to reap the benefits to your physical and mental health. • Tax File Number (TFN) Applications The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) no longer offers opportunities to apply for a TFN through the College. There is a new system in place where students simply log on to the ATO website and complete the relevant form on-line. Students will also need to book in an appointment with a local (participating) Post Office to submit the form and relevant identification documents. Completed instructions have been emailed to all Senior School students. Marisa Favilla Head of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Teen’s Flair for Fashion Pays Off Year 11 Student Jesse Romeo has launched his own clothing line at just 16 years of age. What started as a hobby has become a fully-fledged business for Jesse, who launched label Remacy Clothing last month. Jesse has always enjoyed fashion but never considered having his own label until friends started asking him to make them clothes. Jesse’s clothes are already being sold in two shops, as well as online. Remacy Clothing will also feature in a fashion parade for agency RAW. The range comprises printed tees, singles and hats, but Jesse says the sky is the limit. He is even considering introducing a line for children down the track. Jesse’s mother, Julie Romeo, says her is very proud of her son. “He has sold about 40 tops in the last month, which is a great achievement,” she says. • Semester 1 Examinations Timetable The timetable for the end of semester exams in Week 8 (June 15–18) is included in this newsletter. Students were emailed this timetable on May 7 along with the rules and requirements for exams. It is important that students familiarise themselves with these rules. Electronic equipment is not permitted in exam rooms so students should be aware that this includes mobile phones and smart watches! Should any students have more than one exam scheduled at the same time, they should contact Ms Jessica Caruana to adjust their timetable. Year 11 students doing Year 12 subjects should make their Year 12 workshop the priority and again see Jessica Caruana to reschedule exams if there is a clash. Most exams commence at either 9am or 1:30pm however there are exceptions for Year 10 Science and Maths and all English exams. Students are advised to check the timetable carefully. Year 10 students will have lessons as normal on Monday June 15. Exams for Year 10 students commence on Tuesday June 16. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching and Learning

  • Year 12 Workshops There will be significant variation in lesson structure for Year 12 students in Week 8 of this term (June 15-18). Year 12 lessons will happen as normal on Monday June 15 with the regular noon dismissal. However, the format for lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be dramatically different, with each subject being allocated a significant block of time for a workshop. The workshops will occur as follows:

    Tuesday June 16 8:30am-12:30pm: Line 4 (usually Tue4, Wed2, Fri1) 1pm-3:40pm: Line 2 (usually Mon1, Tue2, Thu4) Wednesday June 17 8:30am-12:30pm: Line 1 (usually Tues1, Thu2, Fri3) 1pm-3:40pm: Line 3 (usually Mon2, Wed1, Thu3) Thursday June 18 8:30am-12:30pm: Line 5 (usually Tues3, Wed4, Fri2)

    Each day there will be a 20 minute recess break from 10:40-11am and lunch break from 12:30-1pm. Research Project classes will NOT be running workshops as most students will be finished the requirements of this subject by this time. Students are not required to attend school for the line where their Research Project class is scheduled. The library will be available should students wish to access this resource during that time. Please note that Friday is a student-free day. The library will also be open on this day for students to utilise. I will contact all Year 12 VET students prior to Week 8 to ensure that their VET placement does not significantly impact their attendance at workshops. Year 11 students doing Year 12 subjects should make the workshop attendance the priority and in the event that this clashes with scheduled exams, should book a catch-up exam. Students have been emailed these details also. The workshops provide a great opportunity for focus and consolidation of learning experiences for each subject. Students and teachers will have a large block of time facilitating significant work completion with limited interruption. There is also the added bonus that this format provides significant non-contact time for Year 12 students to move forward with workshop tasks on Thursday and Friday. Students also gain additional time with their teachers for the subjects they would have missed due to the student-free day Friday. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching & Learning
