THIS WEEK IN HISTORY (continued):• “Don’t you think a stereo cassette player that you can listen to while walking around is a good idea?” Those were the words of Sony’s chairman Masaru Ibuka back in 1979. Ibuka traveled extensively and loved music and pitched the idea to company officials. On July 1 of that year, the Sony Walkman hit retailers’ shelves. • The year’s midpoint occurs on July 2, with 182 days passed and 182 yet to come (except in Leap years, which have one extra day in the first half). On this day in 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were heard from for the last time as they attempted to make the first round-the-world flight. Their last contact was from the vicinity of Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. • Chevrolet rolled its one-millionth Corvette off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on July 2, 1992. It was a white LT1 roadster with a red interior and black roof, carrying a price tag of more than $31,000. Another automotive milestone took place on this day in 2005, when the very last Ford Thunderbird was manufactured. The Ford plant at Wixom, Michigan, produced the platinum car with black interior. Employees of the plant signed their autographs on the inside fender panels, and the two-seater was given to the great-granddaughter of company founder Henry Ford, Josephine Ford.• The Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg took place July 1-3, 1863, the largest military battle in U.S. history. Confederate troops of 75,000 under Robert E. Lee met the 97,000 men of the Union Army commanded by George Meade in the small Pennsylvania town, population 2,400. By the end of the three-day conflict, more than 51,000 were dead, along with more than 5,000 horses.

It’s estimated that 569 tons of ammunition were used in the assault, and 634 cannons were positioned throughout the 25-square-mile area. The Confederates were defeated in the battle, but it was not to be the end of the war. It raged on for nearly two more years, although Lee’s army never recovered from the devastation.

• The U.S. Second Continental Congress met from July 1-4, 1776, in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall to debate, revise and adopt the Declaration of Independence. The document had been drafted by Thomas Jefferson, listing grievances against the King of England and breaking ties between the colonies and the mother country. Fifty-six men later signed the document, and it was read publicly for the first time on July 8.

• It somehow seems appropriate that two of America’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, should pass away on July 4. Jefferson, the nation’s third president and author

Ask Your Cat!

Cats are masters of hiding how they feel. Sick cats will become more reclusive and sleep more. Even very ill cats will meow and purr to show their humans a bright side of life. Little signs of decreased appetite, not drinking as much, not wanting to play, spending more time in bed, becoming more loving to their special person, or any basic change in personality can tip you off that something may not be right with your cat. Cats try to tell you something is wrong but many times humans don’t speak ‘Feline’.

Cat language either spoken or acted out can help you understand your cat. Chirps, mews, hisses, growls, meows, purrs, and other vocalizations all have meaning and if you are aware of what your cat is saying you can talk back. Cat body language and posturing can tell your cat’s mood and what he/she is about to do. The ‘Halloween Cat’ posture is fright or scared telling you to stay away. The cat with its ears pinned back is telling you that he/she is ready to strike/attack. The cat that is rolled over on his/her back totally trust you and your home. If a cat is facial marking or tail marking you then you are his/her special person. And, if your cat seeks you out as a companion you have a kitty soul mate.

Eye language is a very strong communication tool. Staring at a cat with full open eye is an aggressive move that means you want to fight or are threatening. Just break eye contact and the issue is dropped. If you squint at a cat that is a friendly gesture that the cat perceives as a ‘kitty kiss’. If you squint at your cat and the cat squints back you are pals. Use the eye squint with your cat and see if your cat responds.

Some cats will show you that they want their litter box cleaned by urinating right in front of the box. If your cat urinates on your clothes or right in front of you then your cat may be telling you he/she has a urinary tract infection. Be aware of these little messages.

If you speak “Feline” then living with your cat can be very pleasurable. Remember that humans can train dogs, horses, and other humans but cats train humans.

The Gem AdvisorPeridot

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

The Peridot is one of the few gemstones that come in only one color – a rich green with a subtle suggestion of gold. It is the gemstone of August, perhaps because it is so wearable with a light summer wardrobe. The peridot is both old and new. It can be found in ancient Egyptian jewelry from the 2nd Millen-nium BC. The stones used then came from a deposit on a small volcanic island in the Red Sea, some 45 miles off the Egyptian coast at Aswan, which was not rediscovered until about 1900 (now exhausted). A few years ago deposits of exceedingly beautiful and transparent peridot were located in the Kashmir region (where parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India meet China) that have re-ignited interest in this lovely stone. The most beautiful stones come from the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Because of the rich finds in Pakistan and Afghanistan, there is enough raw material on the market, so

the right stone can now be found to cater for each individual taste and each pocket. Large, transparent stones of an intense color are, however, rare and correspondingly expensive. Interest in the peridot gemstone is on the rise and you should definitely get to know it better.Scott McQueen

Replacing a Grill’s Propane Regulator

Q: I picked up a used gas grill for free the other day. The only problem with it, as acknowledged by the

owner, is that the hose connecting the regulator to the propane tank has a leak in it. Is this something I can

fix easily? Paying for an expensive repair would kind of negate the “free” part of the deal. -- Jake in San

Diego

A: This should be a fairly easy repair, and not expen-sive at all. Replacement regulator and hose assemblies for most types of gas grills can be found at the home-

improvement store for around $20. First, make sure the propane tank (if it came with the grill) is completely shut off by turning the tank spigot clockwise until it is tightly closed. Set the grill’s con-

trol knobs to the “off” position.Remove the hose assembly by unscrewing the hose

connections from the propane tank and the grill. You can use pliers if necessary on this step. If the connec-

tors are stubborn, spray a bit of lubricating oil on them and allow to work for about five minutes before trying

to unscrew them.Take the regulator and hose assembly to the home-

improvement store to match it up with the correct re-placement part. If the grill didn’t come with a propane

tank, or if the accompanying tank is empty, now is also a good time to either purchase a propane tank or

exchange the old one.Back home, hook up the regulator assembly to the

propane tank and to the grill. Do not use pliers at this point -- hand-tighten the connections. Pliers can crack the plastic shell inside the connectors. Once the con-nectors are on straight, you can use pliers to gently

tighten the connectors about a half-turn.Next, test the connections for leaks. Mix dish soap

and water until the solution is nice and frothy. Leav-ing the grill knobs in the “off” position, turn on the propane tank and drizzle the soapy water over each

connection, including where the hoses connect to the regulator. (A sponge can make this task easier.)

If you see bubbles rising and popping fast at one of the connections, or if you smell gas, there’s a leak.

Shut off the propane tank and re-tighten the connec-tions, then test again until the connections no longer

leak.

HOME TIP: When grilling, only open the propane-tank valve 1/2 turn. This supplies enough gas to the

burners, and makes emergency shut off very fast should you ever need to close the valve.

• An announcement at the July 4, 1939, Yankees game saddened baseball fans across the nation. Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig stood before the crowd and announced his retirement from baseball after being stricken with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old called himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth” for having played 17 seasons in the major leagues. His amazing record of 2,130 consecutive games endured for 56 years, and his record 23-career grand slams remains unbeaten. Gehrig passed away less than two years later, and his number “4” uniform was retired, making him the first player to be given this honor.

Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney was in the audience and was so impressed with the music, he asked Lennon if he might play some tunes for him. Just two weeks later, McCartney was invited to join the Quarrymen, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Fighting Cavities with ‘Sugar’ ??

Q. Can we really fight tooth decay with ‘sugar’?A. Yes! An important way to fight cavities is with the sugar substitute sweetener Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar that not only helps fight cavities, but can actually prevent them.

Q. What is Xylitol?A. Xylitol is a naturally-occuring sugar alcohol found in the fibers of fruits and vegetables and other plants. It is found in berries, oats, mushrooms, corn husks, sugar cane, trees, and many other plants. It is practically as sweet as table sugar, and is used as a sweetener in certain brands of chewing gum, mints, toothpastes, mouth rinses, candy, lemonade mixes, and all-purpose sweeteners. (Be sure to check the label!) Q. How does ‘sugar’ (Xylitol) fight tooth decay?A. Xylitol fights cavities in several ways: (1) It attracts and then inhibits, or starves out, the specific bacteria that cause tooth decay. (2) Unlike ordinary table sugar, Xylitol does not break down, or ferment, into harmful acids that de-mineralize tooth enamel and cause a cavity. (3) Xylitol creates just the right chemistry in the saliva to re-mineralize the Calcium and Phosphate minerals back into damaged tooth structure and “heal” the early cavity.

Q. Is Xylitol safe? A. Xylitol is safe for humans; it is deadly for dogs. Xylitol has no known toxicity in humans. However, “man’s best friend” does not tolerate Xylitol, even in small amounts. Therefore, since many dogs have a “sweet tooth”, they can easily snoop around and find their master’s stash of gum, mints, or candy. Be sure to keep xylitol-containing products out of your dog’s reach. If you suspect your dog has consumed any Xylitol, get him/her to the Vet immediately!

Q. How much Xylitol do I need? A. Research suggests one should consume six to ten grams per day. A stick of Xylitol gum or mint typically has about one gram of Xylitol. For optimum effect in fighting cavities, it’s important to consume Xylitol throughout the day; so it will continually fight those “bad bugs” that cause cavities, and aid in remineralizing.

Work Toward Your Own Finan-cial Independence

Day Once again, Independence Day is here, bringing fireworks and

barbeques. Of course, the 4th of July is more than hoopla — it’s a time to re-flect on the many freedoms we enjoy in this country. Yet, for many people, one important type of freedom — financial freedom — is still elusive. So you may want to use this holiday as an occasion to think of those steps you can take to eventually declare your own Financial Independence Day.

Here are some moves that can help:

Create a strategy. Financial freedom doesn’t just happen — it takes planning, patience and perseverance. To work toward your financial independence, you’ll need to create a financial strategy, in conjunction with your financial advisor, and stick to that strate-gy. Over time, you’ll need to make adjustments, but if your overall strategy is appropriate for your goals, time horizon and risk toler-ance, it should help you get you to where you want to go. Contribute as much as possible to your retirement plans. Each year, put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or simi-lar employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 457(b) if you work for a state or local government or a 403(b) if you work for a school or other tax-exempt organization. These plans offer the potential for tax-deferred earnings, so your retirement funds can grow faster than if they were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Also, if you’re eligible, try to “max out” on your IRA every year. Maintain adequate life insurance. If you have a family, you aren’t just thinking of your own financial independence — you have to think of theirs, too. And that’s why you need to maintain adequate life insurance, particularly during the years when your children are growing up. But even after they’ve left the home, you may find that life insurance can be valuable in providing retire-ment funds for your spouse, should anything happen to you. And if you have permanent life insurance, which contains an invest-ment component, you can generally access the cash value, through policy loans or withdrawals, to help pay for your own retirement. Protect yourself from long-term care costs. You may never need any type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home or assistance from a home health aide, but if you do, the enormous costs can threaten your financial independence — and possibly even put an economic strain on your spouse or grown children. After all, the national average rate for a private room in a nurs-ing home is more than $87,000 per year, according to the 2011 MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Adult Day Services, and Home Care Costs. And the national hourly rate for home health aides is $21, according to the same survey. Medi-care typically pays very little of these costs, which puts the burden on you. Fortunately, some investment vehicles can help you deal with long-term care expenses. Consult with your financial advisor to determine which of these vehicles may be appropriate for your needs.

A national holiday won’t be declared when you achieve your fi-nancial independence — but, for you, it will be a time well worth celebrating. So do what it takes to work toward the arrival of that happy day.

“Recently, the news has been full of loss and devastation in this beautiful state we all love. My heart goes out to every-one affected by the fires. Because of this, I decided it would be great to share a smile and a laugh through a few light hearted jokes: What lies at the bottom of the ocean and twitches?A nervous wreck. A magician was driving down the road.. then he turned into a drive way... What do you get when you cross an elephant and a rhino?El-if-i-no. MOMENTS IN TIMEThe History Channel

¥ On July 22, 1598, William Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice” is entered on the Sta-tioners’ Register. By decree of Queen Elizabeth, the Stationers’ Register licensed printed works, giving the Crown tight control over all published material.

¥ On July 19, 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovers a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles north of Alexandria. Called the Rosetta Stone, the artifact held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been “dead” for nearly 2,000 years.

¥ On July 18, 1925, Volume One of Adolf Hitler’s philosophical autobiography, “Mein Kampf,” is published. It was a blueprint of his agenda for a Third Reich and a clear exposition of the night-mare that will envelope Europe from 1939 to 1945.

¥ On July 16, 1935, the world’s first parking me-ter, known as Park-O-Meter No. 1, is installed on the southeast corner of what was then First Street and Robinson Avenue in Oklahoma City, Okla.
