HOLIDAYS (continued):* Northern Italians engage in fruit-flinging silliness

when they observe Iverea Carnevale’s “Battle of the Oranges.” During the three days of the country’s annual carnival (held during February or March), the local populace re-enacts an 1194 revolt by the people against a cruel count and his troops. The original revolt was conducted with stones, but today, the citizenry have smartly taken to instead using the oranges that exceed the country’s yearly production quota. Some locals really re-enact the scene enthusiastically, so if you happen to attend, don’t forget to duck.

* In the spring, India celebrates the Holi Festival of Colors. This “colorful” festival was re-created in the 2006 independent film, “Outsourced” (the inspiration for a similarly named NBC sitcom last year). All the colors of the rainbow are tossed around in powders that men and women throw at each other. In addition, people pitch buckets of water on each other, making for a messy good time. These playful activities are accompanied by dancing and the frenzied beating of drums. This festival has political and socio-economic significance as well, since it marks one of the only times where one sees men and women of various social castes mixing in Indian society.

* Thailand’s Songkran Festival, held April 13-15, is part of the Thai New Year and is a very wet tradition. While “Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that in Thai refers to the influence of the sun on certain Zodiac signs, it is water that captures the attention and imagination of all the locals.

* As part of their celebration of the vernal equinox, the people congregate with buckets, hoses, water balloons, water pistols and anything else that can capably transport water for the purposes of drenching everything and everyone from head to toe. This may well be the world’s biggest water fight. Of course, “fight” isn’t really the right word, because the action of tossing water to others is actually perceived as a demonstration of kindness and respect during the festival. Maybe the “world’s biggest water hug” would be more appropriate.

* Each July, the citizens of the Eastern European republic of Belarus gather for Ivana Kupala Day, a celebration of fertility. Among the customs observed are dancing, singing and the donning of wreaths by both sexes. To add a special twist to their festivities, the people also go skinny-dipping and jump through fire, though presumably not at the same time.

* From the country that gives us the annual “Running of the Bulls” comes an even more curious holiday. On August 27, Spain observes

UCSF worm research challenges thinking on cells By David Perlman

Consider the lowly planarian, a tiny flatworm that wriggles in pud-dles and ponds and has long intrigued laboratory scientists who can chop one worm into many pieces and watch each piece quickly grow into a whole new worm.

Chop off a planarian's head, and the head will regenerate an entire new wriggling body, complete with its tail; chop off a tail, and the tail will grow a new head and body.

Now planarians are posing a fresh mystery for scientists at UCSF who have discovered that every cell in every planarian's body lacks a key structure that all other animals in the world - from bugs to hu-mans - possess in order to divide and multiply, indeed to stay alive.

The structure is called a centrosome, and the UCSF researchers who study the biology of planarians had assumed that those little worms must also need centrosomes for their cells to divide and reproduce.

In fact, the scientists discovered, planarian cells never have had any of those crucial cell structures, yet they continue to thrive and reproduce.

All this may seem like an obscure discovery, except that it poses fundamental questions about life and survival and evolution, say UCSF biochemist Wallace F. Marshall and Juliette Azimzadeh, a postdoctoral researcher in Marshall's laboratory.

"It's like trying to think about a body without a heart," Marshall says.

A report on the discovery appears in this week's ScienceExpress, the online edition of the journal Science.

The big interest in planarians, Marshall said, is their unique ability to regenerate, and "regenerative medicine" - the effort to restore or replace diseased parts of the human body like heart and brain tissue - is the most swiftly advancing field of medical science today. Stem cells are a key to this kind of medicine.

"Now that we know that some animals like planarians reproduce without centrosomes, we need to rethink what those cell structures actually do," he said.

Cell division is a crucial function in all humans, and cancer, for example, is a disease of abnormally dividing cells. Some forms of mental abnormality in childhood involve abnormal cell division, but whether or how the centrosomes are involved is unknown.

Azimzadeh is interested in the evolution of planarians, whose an-cestry in the worm world goes back for many millions of years.

By probing deeply into the history of their genes, she and her col-leagues have found that somewhere back among their evolutionary ancestors, flatworm cells held centrosomes but lost them long ago.

That loss, say the researchers, "is a remarkable event in the evolu-tionary history of animals."

Got paint? Seems everybody does – and it’s not just on their walls. You probably have paint cans in your closet, on your basement shelves and in the garage. You’re not alone. In 2003, the EPA estimated that in the U.S. alone, there were nearly one million gallons of leftover paint every day. That’s more than 3.6 billion pounds of leftover paint polluting your environment and seeping into your ground water every year.  What can you do? The County holds “round-ups” where they’ll dispose of it. They charge a lot and don’t fix the problem! Even though they charge an up front fee or “donation” at the time you drop it off, it still costs taxpayers $100’$ of thou$and$ and the paint still isn’t gone! The majority goes straight into a landfill here in Colorado!  What should you do? Recycle it. Take your leftover latex paint to Green Sheen. They will properly dispose of it through recycling. Plus, for a limited time, they will give you a credit toward the purchase of any new (recycled) paint from their large inventory. What else should you do? Demand recycled paint! Next time you paint, buy recycled paint. Next time you hire a painter, demand that he use recycled paint! Green Sheen hand selects its colors and blends latex paint in designer shades just like the original manufactures. The difference? Theirs saves up to 75% off retail and is environmentally friendly. Even on small jobs, the savings add up!

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta (Frozen Pipes)

Q: Last winter, a couple of pipes in my basement burst. The plumber said that they froze and burst. How can I prevent this from happen-ing again? -- Darla G., Dothan, Ala.

A: Frozen pipes, as you unfortunately discovered, are a serious problem that quickly can become costly, especially if flooding oc-curs and damages furniture and other items. Before talking about prevention, let’s quickly look at emergency measures. When the worst occurs -- a burst pipe -- the water feed to the pipe must be shut off immediately in order to prevent flooding, and then a plumber contacted to fix the problem as soon as possible.Of course, this problem tends to occur at the worst possible times and in the worst way -- the first prolonged cold snap of the year, when no one wants to be wading through freezing water to the shutoff valve. Or, when homeowners are on vacation and flooding occurs for hours ... or days. (This happened to me several years ago: My upstairs neighbor’s pipes burst, and the water flooded my condo.)To prevent this problem, take steps to keep the temperature around those pipes above freezing. Pipes in an uninsulated basement should be wrapped in pipe insulation (available at the hardware or home-improvement store). Outdoor spigots should have the water flow to them turned off during the coldest months, and then be drained; if you can’t turn off the water, purchase insulated spigot covers.During freezing weather, turn on the cold-water tap in the highest and lowest parts of your house, as well as the outdoor spigot. Keep it at a thin trickle or fast drip. Check on all of your pipe runs throughout the freezing period. Run your hand along the pipes when you can. If you feel a spot that’s significantly colder than the rest of the run, there’s a good chance that water is freezing in that spot. If you see frost or condensation on a section of a pipe, or if you see a bulge in the pipe run, those also are telltale signs. Immediately wrap the freezing pipe in a towel soaked in near-boiling water. Pour hot water over the towel periodically to keep it warm.If a bulge in the pipe occurs, or you can’t thaw it, contact a plumber immediately to take additional measures to save the pipe.

Diamond is a stone that excels in brilliance and displays a striking play of prismatic colors. It is the preferred gem in engagement and wed-ding rings, which are worn every day. It is also the hardest natural material known, where hardness is defined as resistance to scratching. Their hardness makes them quite useful in industry as cutting and grinding tools. Diamonds are used to polish, cut, or wear away any mate-rial, including other diamonds. There are diamond-tipped drill bits and saws, and diamond powder is used as an abrasive. Less expensive industrial-grade diamonds, known as bort, are used for such purposes. Diamonds were probably first mind in India over 3,000 years ago. Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources have been discov-ered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Austra-lia. Today experts in the field of gemology grade diamonds and other gemstones based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. Four characteristics, known informally as the four Cs, are now commonly used as the basic descriptors of diamonds: these are carat, cut, color, and clarity.

Portions and Timing(Continued from January 23)

Another important thing to remember is our bodies need all of the food groups! This means proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates! Cutting any of these things completely out of your daily regimen can be detrimental to your health and wellness.

So, now we have an idea of what to eat, when to eat, and how much do we eat.

If you are eating every 2-3 hours, your metabolism will begin to work at peak performance, and your body will actually get on a “clock.” The result? You’ll begin to feel hungry every 2-3 hours. This is a good thing! You’ll also notice you will fill up faster and will eat less at each meal, because you’re constantly fueling your body, rather then starving it and then gorging it all at once! Listen to your body! We’re all very different from one another when it comes to proper portions for our bodies. Portion sizes depend on many different things: your current body mass, your metabolic rate, and also your fitness goals. The answer is simple; when you are full, STOP EATING!

Until next week, yours in health, fitness & wellness,

HOLIDAYS (continued):La Tomatina. As you may have gathered from the name, this day involves tomatoes. What you may not have known is that it involves 30,000 people engaged in pitched aerial battle with the beloved red (or green) fruit. For two hours, natives toss tomatoes at each other until 125,000 of them pepper the landscape and people. It’s all in good fun, celebrating a similar spontaneous food fight that broke out during a parade over 65 years ago. Perhaps nowhere else has so much produce gone to such silly and undoubtedly enjoyable use.

* We’ve featured the world’s biggest tomato, orange and water fights so far, so why not shine a light on the world’s biggest tug-of-war? The Naha Tug-of-War takes place on October 11 in the middle of the Naha Festival, one of the largest celebrations in Okinawa, Japan. One of the region’s biggest thoroughfares, Highway 58, is shut down so that tens of thousands can congregate to decide which of the two masses can pull the other 30 meters. This is no simple length of rope, mind you. Made of rice straw, the rope is so large that no single set of hands could possibly hold it. In fact, it’s so big that a series of smaller ropes are attached all over its surface to accommodate the swarm of hands there to participate. Seen from a distance, it might look as if a massive synthetic snake several blocks long and taller than a car had taken control of the freeway. Fortunately, it’s just a Guinness-World-Record-breaking competition in a country famous for its fascinating customs.

ARE YOUR TEETH SENSITIVE?

Is a taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? If so, you may have a com-mon problem called “sensitive teeth.”

WHAT CAUSES SENSITIVE TEETH?

Cavities and fractured teeth can cause sensitive teeth. But if your dentist has ruled these problems out, then worn tooth enamel, a cracked tooth, or an ex-posed tooth root may be the cause.

Treatment:Sensitive teeth can be treat-ed. Your dentist may sug-gest that you try a desen-sitizing toothpaste, which contains compounds that help block transmissions of sensation fromt he tooth surface to the nerve. Desensitizing toothpaste usu-ally requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced. When choosing toothpaste or any other dental care products, look for those that display the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. Your assurance that products have met ADA criteria for safety and effectiveness. If the desensitizing toothpaste does not ease your discomfort, your dentist may suggest in-office tech-niques. A flouride gel, which strengthens tooth enam-el and reduces the transmission of sensations, may be applied to the sensitive areas of the teeth. If receding gum causes the sensitivity, your dentist may use agents that bond to the tooth root to “seal” the sensitive teeth. The sealer usually is compsed of a plastic material. In cases where hypersensitivity is severe and persist-ent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend endodontic (root canal) treatment.

Investors Can Learn Much From Super Bowl Teams

It’s Super Bowl time again. And whether you’re a sports fan or not, you can probably learn something from the Super Bowl teams that you can apply to other endeavors — such as investing.

What might these lessons be? Take a look:

Pick players carefully. Super Bowl teams don’t usu-ally get there out of luck; they’ve made it in part be-cause they have carefully chosen their players. And to potentially achieve success as an investor, you, too, need carefully chosen “players” — investments that are chosen for your individual situation. Choose a diversified mix of players. Not only do Su-per Bowl teams have good players, but they have good ones at many different positions — and these players tend to play well together. As an investor, you should own a variety of investments with different capabili-ties — such as stocks for growth and bonds for income — and your various investments should complement, rather than duplicate, one another. Strive to build a di-versified portfolio containing investments appropriate for your situation, such as stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other vehi-cles. Diversifying your holdings may help reduce the effects of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or pro-tect against loss.) Follow a “game plan.” Super Bowl teams are skilled at creating game plans designed to maximize their own strengths and exploit their opponents’ weaknesses. When you invest, you also can benefit from a game plan — a strategy to help you work toward your goals. This strat-egy may incorporate several elements, such as taking full advantage of your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored re-tirement plan, pursuing new investment opportunities as they arise and reviewing your portfolio regularly to make sure it’s still appropriate for your needs. Stay dedicated to your goals. Virtually all Super Bowl teams have had to overcome obstacles, such as injuries, bad weather and a tough schedule. But through persist-ence and a constant devotion to their ultimate goal, they persevere. As an investor, you’ll face some challenges, too, such as political and economic turmoil that can up-set the financial markets. But if you own a diversified mix of quality investments and follow a long-term strat-egy that’s tailored to your objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance, you can keep moving forward, despite the “bumps in the road” that all investors face. Get good coaching. Super Bowl teams typically are well-coached, with disciplined head coaches and in-novative offensive and defensive coordinators. When you’re trying to achieve many financial goals — such as a comfortable retirement, control over your invest-ment taxes and a legacy to leave to your family — you, too, can benefit from strong “coaching.” As your “head coach,” you might choose a financial professional — someone who can help you identify your goals and rec-ommend an appropriate investment strategy to help you work toward them. And your financial professional can coordinate activities with your other “coaches,” such as your tax and legal advisors.

Do It YourselfA Little Help From Your Friends At Stroke Of

Genius PaintingPart 1 of 2

We understand that sometimes there are projects that are just too small to hire a professional painting contractor. Given that fact, we want to do what we can to help you through the process of ‘Do It Yourself’ painting. We would like to ensure that your project is done in a safe and professional manner. So, get all of your ‘honey-do’s out of the way and let’s have some fun painting!Getting started: Here is a list of tools and supplies that you will most likely need to get going on your project.Drop-cloths, Brushes and rollers, An empty

five-gallon bucket and roller screen, White tape, Masking paper, Painter’s rags, 35-year caulk, Primer, Paint, A step ladder or extension ladder, Access to water for clean up.

From a safety standpoint, you want to make sure that your project is in a well-ventilated area. Fans may be required if there is no window availability. Be sure that children and pets are kept away from the work area. It is important to allow toxic rags and other supplies to ‘air dry’ outdoors, prior to disposing.

Please look for the conclusion of our project in next week’s issue of Tidbits!

On Feb. 16, 1848, romantic composer Frederic Chopin plays his final concert in his adopted city of Paris, 18 months before his death from tuberculosis at the age of 39. After fleeing his native Poland, he spent the rest of his life amid the high society of France.

On Feb. 19, 1851, an angry mob in San Francisco’s business district “tries” two Australian suspects in the robbery and as-sault of C.J. Jansen. Vigilantes were fairly common during the Gold Rush boom in San Francisco, and they were so well regarded that they took over the Democratic Party in the late 1850s, and some became respected politicians.

On Feb. 18, 1885, Mark Twain publishes his famous and con-troversial novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” At the book’s heart is the journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runa-way slave, down the Mississippi River on a raft.

On Feb. 13, 1915, The American Society of Composers, Au-thors and Publishers (ASCAP) is formed. ASCAP collects and distributes royalties for copyrighted musical works. Today, AS-CAP reports that it distributes more than $800 million in royal-ties annually to its members.

On Feb. 14, 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming, a bacteriologist, dis-covers penicillin. Having left a plate of staphylococcus bacte-ria uncovered, Fleming noticed that a mold, similar to the kind found on bread, had fallen on the culture and had killed many of the bacteria.

On Feb. 15, 1933, president-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt es-capes an assassination attempt. Deranged, unemployed brick layer Giuseppe Zangara shouted, “Too many people are starv-ing!” and opened fire with six rounds. Zangara’s extreme action reflected the anger and frustration felt among many Americans during the Great Depression.

On Feb. 17, 1966, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys rolls tape on the first take of “Good Vibrations.” Six months, four studios and $50,000 later, he finally completed his 3 minute, 39 second symphony, pieced together from more than 90 hours of tape recorded during literally hundreds of sessions.
