This week, Tidbits looks at rain, snow, wind and storms, bringing you the best and worst of several weath- er conditions from around the world. “Rain, rain, go away” might be something the resi- dents of Mawsynram, India, want to say. It’s the wettest place on earth, receiving over 36 feet (11 m) of rainfall every year. Antofagasta, Chile, on the other hand, re- ceives less than a tenth of a millimeter of rain per year, and many years, receives none at all. The community of Bagdad, California, had no rain for 767 days between October of 1912 and November of 1914. That’s two years and 37 days! You may have heard of Chicago referred to as the “Windy City,” but it’s not the windiest city in America. That distinction belongs to Blue Hill Observatory, Mas- sachusetts, with an average annual wind speed of 15.4 mph. Second place belongs to Dodge City, Kansas, with Amarillo, Texas, at No. 3. Chicago isn’t even in the top ten! About 27 percent of weather-reporting stations aver- age higher annual wind speeds than Chicago. turn the page for more!

WEATHER (continued):• Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, experienced America’s strongest wind ever recorded, 231 mph (372 km/hr). But, based on averages, Common-wealth Bay, Antarctica, is the windiest place in the world. • Mt. Washington also has the second-highest av-erage snowfall, about 260 inches a year (660 cm). Only Valdez, Alaska, ranks higher with 324 inches (823 cm). Back in 1911, Tamarack, California, re-ceived 390 inches — 32.5 feet (9.9 m) — of snow in one month! Over the course of that winter, 767 inches (19.5 m) of the white stuff fell on the com-munity. • Lightning strikes the earth about 100 times ev-ery second, with each flash carrying over one bil-lion volts. That’s enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for three months! In one short instant, the air surrounding the lightning flash is heated to a temperature five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Lightning will strike the United States about 25 million times this year. Five hundred of those flashes will strike the Empire State Building. • Scientists maintain that there are about 760 thunderstorms occurring on our planet every hour. Trying to figure out how far away a thunderstorm is? Count the number of seconds between a light-ning flash and the following clap of thunder. Di-vide that number by five to compute the distance to the lightning in miles. • You’re more likely to be killed by a lightning strike in Florida than in any other state. Over a 10-year period, 74 people in that state died after being struck, with Texas a distant second with 28 deaths. You’ll be pretty safe in Washington, Oregon and North Dakota, where no deaths occurred during those 10 years. • When strong currents of air carry water droplets up to a height where freezing occurs, ice particles form and grow. They become too heavy to be sup-ported by the air current and fall to the ground as hail. Large hailstones can fall at speeds exceeding 100 mph (160.9 km/hr). Compare that with the speed of a typical raindrop at 17 mph (27.4 km/hr). Cheyenne, Wyoming, averages the most hail-storms in the United State each year, but those in Tulsa, Oklahoma, are the most severe.

• In 1986, a storm in Bangladesh produced the largest hailstones ever recorded; they weighed well over 2 lbs. (1 kg) each. Ninety-two people were killed by the stones. Bangladesh was also home to history’s deadliest cyclone in 1970, with a death toll of 300,000.

Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity.

If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

Obesity Linked to Brain DamageInflammation found in hypothalamus, which controls appetite and weight.

Researchers are beginning to understand why lasting weight loss is so hard. They believe it has to do with damage to the part of the brain that’s involved in weight control.

If obese people stop overeating, switch to a healthful diet and start exercising, they lose weight. However, they may quickly gain it back again. The reason, say researchers, is not a lack of willpower but injury to brain cells, or neurons, in the hypothalamus - a struc-ture deep in the brain that helps control a number of body functions including appetite and weight.

The notion that brain damage might play a role in body weight is not a new one, according to Michael Schwartz of the Diabetes and Obesity Center at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Scientists have known for about five years that the hypothalamus of overweight animals - including humans - displays inflamma-tion, a typical reaction to injury.

But researchers, led by Schwartz, wanted to determine the role hy-pothalamus injury plays in obesity, and they had several questions they wanted to answer:

“Is it simply a consequence of becoming obese or does it occur before the obesity occurs?" says Schwartz. "And what could be driving that response? What is causing the inflammatory response and could that have something to do with the obesity itself?”

Schwartz’s team put laboratory mice and rats on a high-fat diet to make them gain weight. When they looked for evidence of inflam-mation in their brains, they made a startling discovery.

“We were frankly shocked to realize the inflammation became ap-parent within 24 hours of the switch in diet,” says Schwartz.

The researchers also saw evidence of a strong and rapid neuro-protective response, as cells were activated to repair the damaged neurons. But the animals were kept on the high-fat diet for nine months and the inflammation eventually returned.

The key message, according to Schwartz, is that it’s not the fault of people who try and fail repeatedly to lose weight through dieting.

“Our data would point to a more structural, biological basis for why it is difficult to keep weight off," he says. "It has to do with damage to the brain area that is responsible for controlling body weight.”

Schwartz says that also explains why drugs are not effective at helping people achieve lasting weight loss. The compounds cur-rently available do not target what appears to be the underlying cause of obesity.

rado, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Oklahoma. About 90 percent of U.S. tornadoes hit this region. There are more tornadoes in the United States than any other place in the world, with about 1,000 reported per year. Canada is a distant second, with about 100.

• If you’re a sun worshipper, then Yuma, Arizona, is the place for you! This Southwestern community receives more than 4,000 hours of sunshine a year, making it the sunniest place on earth. Yuma also has the lowest precipitation average in the United States, receiving just under 3 inches (7.6 cm) a year, and its record high temperature is 124˚ F (51˚ C).

• The hottest temperature ever recorded on earth was back in September of 1922 in El Azizia, Libya, when the mercury soared to 136˚ F (58˚ C). The North American record belongs to Death Valley, California, at 134˚ F (57˚ C) in July of 1913.

• Baby, it’s cold outside! How about 129˚ below zero (-89.6˚ C) reached in Vostok, Antarctica, in 1983? Russia gets plenty cold, too, with low temps recorded at -90˚ F (-68˚ C) on more than one occa-sion. • Alaska is the coldest U.S. state overall — at least five cities have had low temps dip under -60˚ F (-51˚ C), with Barrow ranking as the coldest city. Down on the mainland, the honor of coldest city goes to International Falls, Minnesota. Neighbor-ing Duluth, Baudette and Hibbing aren’t far behind. Two North Dakota communities, Grand Forks and Fargo, offer some stiff competition with average temps from December through March in the single digits. • The world’s least sunny place is, not surprisingly, the South Pole, where the sun shines just 182 days a year.

• The combination of heat and humidity can be stifling on a summer day. Phoenix, Arizona, is ranked as No. 1 on the list of “Most Uncomfortable Cities.” One of the nation’s hottest summertime cities, its average July temperature is 104˚ F (40˚ C). Several Texas cities are close behind — Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Dallas, Waco and Houston are all within the Top Ten. • If you don’t mind consistency and predictability, then San Francisco and San Diego are the places for you. They are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the category of “least weather variety” based on temperatures, precipitation and wind. In fact, Cali-fornia holds eight out of the Top Ten spots in this group. • Over a 24-hour period back in 1916, the tem-perature in Browning, Montana, dropped from 44˚ F to -54˚ F (7˚ C to -48˚ C).

By its name you would think it would be red, but instead bloodstone is green jasper speck-led with bright red spots of iron oxide. It is often referred to as the martyr’s gem because medieval Christians would carve scenes of the crucifixion and of martyrs on bloodstone. An ancient Christian legend held that bloodstone was formed when the blood of Christ fell from his hands, feet, and side and stained some jasper that was at the foot of the cross. In ancient times, bloodstone was thought to be able to stop hemorrhages with only a touch. Some think it relieves stomach and bowel pain and strengthens the blood purifying organs and improves blood circulation. Bloodstone is also supposed to have a positive influence on a bladder. Today in India finely pulverized blood-stone is used as a medication and aphrodisiac. It is mined in Brazil, China, India, Australia, and the United States (Wyoming). Quality speci-mens of bloodstone are not easy to find though it remains a quite affordable stone used frequently for pendants and bead necklaces.

Not Just a New Year, But a New Life!(Continued from Jan. 2)

*If you don’t like your schedule, change it! You’re the one who makes it, so make the changes necessary to be more manageable, and less stressful.

*You are a product of your surroundings! If you’re surrounded by people who don’t bring happiness, or support into your life, they must go! Negative, selfish, unhappy people who only take, can suck the life right out of you!

*Get rid of the excuses and pity parities! We all have busy lives, we all have challenges, obstacles & ups and downs. At the end of the day, there’s only one person who’s responsible for your choices – YOU! If you spend your life making excuses why you’re not taking care of yourself, eating right, exercising, taking a “time out” to get your mind and your soul in a healthy place – you’re going to get no where fast! AND, you’ll surely stay where you are! Get a new perspective!

Let go of self pity, excuses, blame and resentment and allow yourself to feel happy. Create happiness by doing the things you need to do for yourself, as well as, your family and friends! It’s ok to have “you time”, but you must create it and make decisions which will allow you to have time for you! One of my favorite quotes, “Don’t be jealous or envious of anyone if you’re not willing to put in the work they did to achieve what they have.” - Joyce Meyer

STRANGE BUT TRUEby Samantha Weaver

¥ During this election season, it might be good to keep in mind the following sage observation, made beloved humorist Will Rogers: “The American people are generous and will forgive almost any weakness with the exception of stupidity.”

¥ Mountain goats aren’t actually goats; they’re antelopes.

¥ Those who study such things say that a mosquito flaps its wings 1,000 times every second.

¥ If you’ve ever been to London -- or if you’ve seen a movie that was set there -- you might remember the iconic black taxi-cabs that are ubiquitous in that city; the high roofs set them apart from other vehicles on the streets. The headroom offered did once serve a purpose. When the cars were originally de-signed, top hats were still de rigueur for a properly dressed gentleman, and the high roofs allowed a man so attired to enter and leave the vehicle without knocking off his hat.

¥ You might be surprised to learn that some ants can live more than 15 years.

¥ Yes, there’s a name for it. The next time you’re opening a bottle of wine, take a moment to consider the spiral part that is inserted into the cork: It’s known as a worm.

¥ Washington is the only U.S. state named for a president.

¥ Celebrated 19th-century French poet Arthur Rimbaud wrote for only a few short years in his late teens. Despite critical suc-cess, he gave up writing when he was 20 years old and spent the rest of his life as a soldier and a merchant.

¥ In medieval Japan, dentists removed patients’ teeth with their bare hands.***Thought for the Day: “Television news is like a lightning flash. It makes a loud noise, lights up everything around it, leaves everything else in darkness and then is suddenly gone.” -- Hodding Carter

Dental Check Ups Include OralCancer Screenings

When you go for your regular dental check up, your dentist and hygienist are also screening you for any signs of oral cancer. Every hour of every day, someone dies of oral cancer in the United States. This serious dental disease which pertains to the mouth, lips or throat is often highly curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. Visiting your dentist for regular check ups and avoiding tobacco are the key factors in preventing oral cancer.

Gum (Periodontal)DiseaseAffects Your Overall Health Gum disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults and has also been linked to heart disease and strokes. If diagnosed in the early stage, gingivitis can be treated and reversed. If treatment is not received, a more serious and advanced stage of gum disease, called Periodontitis, which includes bone loss, may follow. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental check ups and cleanings are the best prevention against gum disease.Dental Cleanings and Check Ups are Extremely Important Going to the dentist for regular check ups & cleanings is one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health. Regular check ups can prevent cavities, root canals, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental conditions. Don’t wait until you have a problem before you see your dentist, help prevent problems before they happen.

When Should You Start Tak-ing Social Security

If you’re of a certain age, the new year means you’re that much closer to a day you may have anticipated with a combination of humor and resignation — specifically, the day you’re eligible for Social Security. But just because you can take Social Security, it doesn’t mean you must

take it. So, should you?

Before we get to that question, let’s review the basic rules governing Social Security payments. You can typically start collecting benefits at age 62, but you’ll get only about 75% of what you’d receive if you waited until your “full” retire-ment age, which varies according to your birth year but is most likely 66. You’ll get even bigger monthly checks if you delay collecting them until you’re past 66, and you’ll “max out” on your payments once you reach 70.

So, the question boils down to this: Should you start col-lecting Social Security early — thereby receiving smaller, but more numerous, checks — or later, when your checks will be bigger but fewer?

If you really need the money once you reach 62, you’ve already got your answer. But if you could potentially afford to wait, we recommend you view your decision through a LENS:

L: Your projected lifespan —You can’t see into the future, but given your family history and general health, you can make an educated guess about your projected longevity. If you’re fairly confident that, once you reach 66, you’ve still got another two or more decades in front of you, you may want to consider delaying taking Social Security past age 62. E: Your employment status — If you’re under full re-tirement age — between 62 and 66 — then for every two dollars you earn over $14,640 (in 2012), you’ll lose one dollar in Social Security benefits. In the months before you reach your full retirement age, for every three dollars you earn over $38,880 (again, for 2012), you’ll lose one dollar in benefits. But starting in the month you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without losing any benefits. N: Your need, including your other sources of retire-ment income — If you have a pension, or you’ve built substantial resources in your IRA, your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and you can support your income needs with modest withdrawals from these ac-counts, you might decide it’s worthwhile to delay taking Social Security to maximize your benefits. Remember that regardless of your Social Security decision, you typically would have to pay a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you started taking withdrawals from these accounts before you reach age 59½. S: Your spouse/marital status — If you’re single, you ba-sically just need to think of yourself when making this de-cision. But it’s a different story if you’re married. If you die first, your spouse can keep receiving his or her own Social Security benefit or receive yours — whichever is larger. Consequently, you and your spouse will want to coordi-nate when you take Social Security benefits so that you can maximize the benefit for the spouse likeliest to live longer.

The choice of when to start taking Social Security can af-fect your lifestyle throughout your retirement years — so weigh all the factors and make the choice that’s right for you.

With the New Year upon us I feel it is appropriate to use this column to look at the foundation of Christianity and what really sets it apart from every other religion in the world. At the root of the Christian faith is the matter of sin. In this day and age, many people and religious organizations have watered down this subject or even attempted to remove it completely from our consciousness, because after all, we would not want anyone to feed bad would we? Well the fact of the matter is that every single person on this earth is born into sin. And this is easy to prove, just take a young child, say 2 or 3 years old. Have you ever witnessed them lying to you over something? Of course the answer is yes! Did their parents teach them how to lie, teach them how to cheat, teach them how to steal? Of course not, a loving parent would never teach his child those things yet he does them instinctively because of sin. The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23” For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” But mankind was not originally created like that, God created man in His own image and in His own likeness. God originally created man a prefect being, created him to live eternally, and placed him in the Garden of Eden and gave him a command to be fruitful, multiply and fill up the earth with the blessings of God. So what happened? How did this thing get so messed up? The answer is a simple one, man’s free will. Man was created with a free will, with the ability to choose right or wrong. God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and told them this Genesis 3:3 “ But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” Well, along comes Satan and convinces Eve that God is trying to keep something good from her so she goes ahead and eats and gives some to her husband to eat. And at that very moment, as God had said, they died and then became aware of sin. Now they did not die physically, but that process had begun, they would eventually physically die. But even more importantly they died spiritually. The connection and fellowship they had with God up to that point in time was now destroyed. When God created them in His own image, they were created spirit beings, just like God. The real you is a spirit, that has a soul, (your mind, will, & emotions), that lives in a physical body. When you die, you do not stop being you, you simply step out of your body, and at that point, there are only two places for your spirit to go. One is hell, the other is heaven. The question then becomes, what determines where I go to live eternally when I die? Herein, lies THE most important question a man can ask himself. More next week!

9. Make sure that your child knows his or her full name, address, and phone number, the place where you work or can be contact-ed, and how to dial 911, make collect calls, and dial the operatoron a pay phone.

CHILD SAFETY TIPS

1. Approach the subject of safety in a non-threatening way. It isimportant that you don’t make your child fearful of dangerous situa-tions or people, but cautious and able to recognize when some-thing is not right.

2. Encourage your child to trust his or her intuition, and to be ableto talk to you when something is bothering them. They shouldknow not to keep secrets from you. Open communication is veryimportant. Really LISTEN to your child.

3. Let your child know that their body belongs to them. No one hasthe right to touch them inappropriately. If someone is making themfeel uncomfortable, they should let you know immediately.

4. Inform your child of rules pertaining to strangers. A strangerlooks just like any other person and will use several ways to lure achild. The most common ones are: pretending to look for a lostdog, having candy or money if the child goes to their car withthem, telling the child that they’ll hurt family members if they do notcomply, and asking for directions.

5. Let your child know that adults DO NOT ask children for helpnor do they threaten them. If they do encounter these situationsthey should immediately scream, “NO!” and run quickly in theopposite direction and tr y to ¡nd a tr usted adult. They should neverapproach an unknown car or get into a car with an adult that theydo not know. If someone tries to grab them, they should scream,“THIS IS NOT MY PARENT!” to attract attention.

6. Share an easily-remembered secret CODE WORD . Tell your childthat if anyone approaches them and says that they are a familyfriend, they must ask for the code word. If the person really is afriend, they will know it. If they don’t, then your child should runaway as quickly as possible.

7. Never label clothing, a backpack, or other personal items withyour child’s name. An abductor could use this information to try togain trust.

8. Give your child instructions on what to do if they get separatedfrom you in a mall, super market, or other public place. T ell them togo to a check-out counter or information desk, or to approach asecurity o£cer or mother with children, and let them know they arelost and looking for their parent(s).

9. Make sure that your child knows his or her full name, address, and phone number, the place where you work or can be contact-ed, and how to dial 911, make collect calls, and dial the operatoron a pay phone.

COMFORTABLE

Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble.

In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. Upon leaving to buy a bull, the brunette tells her sis-ter, 'When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I'll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.' The brunette arrives at the man's ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, 'I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I've bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.' The telegraph operator explains that he'll be glad to help her, then adds, it will cost 99 cents a word. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette realizes that she'll only be able to send her sister one word. After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, 'I want you to send her the word 'comfortable.' The operator shakes his head. 'How is she ever go-ing to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word 'comfortable?' The brunette explains, 'My sister's blonde. The word is big. She'll read it very slowly.... 'com-for-da-bul.'

Two blondes were going to Disneyland. They were driving on the Interstate when they saw the sign that said Disneyland LEFT. They started crying and turned around and went home.

Two blondes living in Oklahoma were sitting on a bench talking, and one blonde says to the other, 'Which do you think is farther away... Florida or the moon?'

The other blonde turns and says 'Helloooooooooo, can you see Florida ?????'

A blonde pushes her BMW into a gas station. She tells the mechanic it died. After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly.

She says, 'What's the story?'

He replies, 'Just crap in the carburettor'She asks, 'How often do I have to do that?'
