Prefl ight ChecklistHow will you deliver your fi les?Make sure that the format you send is compatible with the computer system that will do the actual design, color correction, pagination, and output.Have you supplied all the nec-essary fi les?Include your electronic mechani-cals in the fi le format requested by your Printer.Include all image and graphic fi les imported into your document. Make sure you’ve saved them in a fi le format your Printer can use. Have you supplied your fonts?Include a list of all font names, font numbers, and font types Use a prefl ight program (Prefl ight Pro-Quark Xtension) to help you prepare electronic job fi les. A pro-gram like this will automatically “gather” image and font fi les

along with your page layout fi les. It will inform you if something is missing.Do you have items that need scanning?Clearly mark crop and fi nal-size information for all images that your Printer will be scanning.Have you converted all your colors from RGB to CMYK?Your images may print black and white or with unacceptable color shifts if you don’t convert them to CMYK. Make sure you’ve used CMYK settings for all other colors, including spot color, if your page layout program allows you to do that.Have you made your fi les bleed when required?Make sure all bleeds extend beyond the edge of the page to your Printer’s requirements. Extending your bleeds is easy to do in a page layout program, but can be time consuming and costly for your printer to do.Have you included a full-sized proof of your fi le?Send a color proof. Make sure you generate your proof from the same electronic mechani-cals that you’re sending to your PrinterHave you indicated any special instructions?Make sure special instructions are clearly detailed on lasers or an attached memo. Tips to to optimise the quality of your scans

u Work with your printer at the inception of a project. Consulting a printer at the early part of a job will usually save you time, money & frustration.

u JPEG’s AND GIF’s are too low in resolution for commercial printing. As a general rule scan at 2400dpi for printing and save it as a TIFF Be aware of folding panels, do your scans at 100% the size of the printed piece and allow for proper margins where you want it to fold.

u Resize all halftone and four color scans in PhotoShop or any other paint program. Resising in the page programs or draw programs can lead to long imaging (RIP) time (and therefore cost more money). Don’t compress the scans in PhotoShop, export scans or graphics at the size they will print.

u Want to make A photo look old or more interesting? Try a vignette. It creates an old-fashioned look and can be helpful in cropping out unwanted parts of an image.

u Save time by rotating your images before printing. This is because when the document is printed, images rotated in the page-layout application create additional work for the computer and printer and take a lot longer to image than ones placed un-rotated. It can be very time-consuming and memory-intensive.

u Avoid missing images by getting a preflight utility program that collects images in addi-tion to fonts while checking your files for other problems.

u Get a deep, rich black on your printing. Use the following CMYK values for black (do not use for small text) Cyan - 40%, Magenta - 40%, Yellow - 20%, Black - 100%For small text: Cyan - 0%, Magenta - 0%, Yellow - 0%, Black - 100%This technique will give you a deep black where you have heavy black ink coverage on your printing.
