This week’s header photo The annual Year 10 harbour swim was held last Wednesday. In dull overcast conditions 45 students completed the 1.2 kilometre course with many of the students completing the event in less than 40 minutes.

The overall fastest male was Patrick Webster in a time of 15 min 56 seconds, whilst the girls fastest time went to Laura Kelly in a very speedy time of 19 minutes and 5 seconds. Principal’s Message Last week the latest update of the MySchool website was made available to the Australian community. It is pleasing to note that our data continues to indicate that Bayview students are performing in NAPLAN at or above expected levels and we continue to have one of the strongest profiles in the district. However, I share the view of many educators that MySchool does not provide a global picture of what a school is like and that making value-for-money comparisons by attempting to align financial data published on the MySchool site with NAPLAN results is ineffectual. National tests are only a very small part of what schools do. Whilst we are proud of our consistent positive trend, we are also mindful that this test data captures one moment in time. As educators we use a range of assessment strategies, including NAPLAN, to monitor and track student progress. It is the careful analysis and response to data that is a sign of a school focused on improving student learning outcomes and ensuring students’ progress. NAPLAN data focuses on students literacy and Numeracy progress from year 3 to year 9.The teaching and learning of good literacy and Numeracy skills are, of course, key activities in all schools. However, we expect 21st century students to leave school with a wider range of skills and aptitudes and the capacity to adapt and thrive in a world that is changing rapidly. That is the focus of our holistic approach to education. School ethos or culture has a significant impact on student achievement. This is not something that can be assessed by a visit to the MySchool website. It is important for families to get a good fit between the child and the school, between the family values and school values, between student aspirations and the strategic direction of the school, and a simple number will not give parents that information. We work very hard to create and sustain a school culture where students are nurtured, challenged and supported and encouraged as they develop into the person that God created them to be. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no

Snorkeling fun for Year 9’s Year 9 have been enjoying snorkeling within their PE lessons. After learning about the equipment and signals for snorkeling in class they then moved into the pool to learn techniques and safety. Techniques included: -safety entry for the pool and sea - how to put on, check and use all equipment - clearing the snorkel - how to duck dive -how to equalise to reduce pressure on the eardrums. Once confident we moved into open water to enjoy our local environment. Remember if you go snorkeling in the sea:

1) Respect the sea 2) Do not exceed your own level of confidence 3) Always snorkel with a buddy

“Flash of Friendship” Inspires students focus on MS Europa Year 9 & 10 Digital Photography students had the opportunity to gather tips on taking photographs that will be entered into the “Flash of Friendship” competition. Images will be selected and reproduced as a postcard as a memento of the Maiden visit of MS Europa. Bayview girls enjoy an afternoon of “Inspiring change”

Thanks to Pacific Hydro 7 young women from Bayview attended the “Inspiring Change” High tea at Portland Golf Club last week. The young women met and spoke with 5 local inspiring women and learnt more about their career pathways, challenges in their workplace and who inspires them most. Most of the guests said it was their mum or grandmother that inspired them and gave them the confidence to be strong, independent women they are today! Notice to parents of siblings in Year 6 We request that all prospective parents of children who have siblings currently at Bayview College to please come and fill in an enrolment form if you would like your child to attend Year 7 Bayview College in 2015. Surf’in with Christiaan Bailey The Glenelg Shire Council is hosting “Surf ‘In with Christiaan Bailey” on Saturday 22 March from 10am > 3:00pm out at the Cape Bridgewater Beach.

The day will cater to people of all abilities with free surfing lessons taking place in the morning followed by a talk by adaptive sports super star Christiaan ‘otter’ Bailey, lunch and tunes. For more info and bookings call (03) 5522 2137 or (03) 5522 2359. First Week of Lent: Jesus enters the desert Keep my promises. In the desert Jesus promised to serve the one, true God. Life would be much easier if we followed one simple rule: I will do what I say I'm going to do. If I promise to be home at 5:00, I won't casually walk in at 5: 15. If I say I will exercise every day, then I put on those walking shoes. Breaking promises takes a lot of energy - ours and that of our loved ones. This week let's do what we say we are going to do. World Prayer Day celebrated by students The World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement which brings Christians of many traditions together to observe a common day of prayer each year. Through preparation and participation in the worship service, we can come to know how our sisters of other countries, languages and cultures understand the Biblical passages in their context. We can hear their concerns and needs and can feel ourselves in solidarity with them as we pray with and for them. In this way, it is possible to enrich our Christian faith as it grows deeper and broader in an international, ecumenical expression.
