Brian and Shaban are travelling around South Australia for three weeks as part of a group of 14 students from Zambia helping spread the message about wildlife conservation. Graduate student Karen Greenhalgh coordinated the visit of the boys to Findon High as part of her involvement in YATZ (Young People at the Zoo). Providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate their thinking and understanding deepens their ability to grasp concepts developed within the classroom, and enables them to showcase their skills and capabilities in innovative ways. Leading up to this time, students will be supported to suitably prepare themselves for their learning exhibition. Further communication about the learning exhibitions will be coming home later in the term. At this stage it is important for families to begin conversations with their students about their learning exhibition, initiating some ideas as to how they can present their new understandings from this semester. Welcome back to Term 2. I trust the holiday break was enjoyable for everyone. We are now back into the swing of things, and the first week back has been extremely busy.

Transport Issue

Students and the community have reported to me a number of issues regarding hazards at the shopping centre bus stop on Findon Road. I am aware that the build-up of students after school on the footpath is creating concerns regarding the close proximity of traffic passing by. I am meeting with our local member Hon. Joe Szakacs to discuss this matter further. If parents have additional information that may be relevant in this issue, please contact me at the school. With the cooler weather finally arriving, I have noticed an increase in car traffic on Drummond Avenue at the end of the day. Please ensure that the speed limit of 25km/h is followed. There has been one collision recently between a student on his bicycle and a car, along with a number of near misses. Given the narrowness of Drummond Avenue it is important that drivers are mindful of students leaving the school grounds. Despite numerous reminders, some of our students are not always monitoring their own safety when crossing the road.

Educator Impact

Earlier this year I mentioned that I had instigated a program called Educator Impact across the school. The purpose of this program is to provide all teachers with a detailed analysis of their teaching capability including the perspectives of a peer observer, students, as well as themselves. There are five phases to the process including reflect, set, grow, focus and certification. The first phase has just been

completed.

Self (n=22) Students (n=452)

From the data outlined in the graphs the strength according to the teacher self-assessment is devel-oping relationships. This comes as no surprise given this is a strength of the school generally based on our smaller size. The students confirmed this in their feedback.Looking at areas for improvement both the teachers and students agreed that the biggest opportuni-ty for improvement is deepening the learning process, hence the reason for the learning exhibitions.

Observer(s) (n=25)

Strengths and Opportunities A third component to the first phase is that teachers observe their peers in the classroom. The observers concurred with results from teachers and students that developing relationships is a strength. Setting clear objectives for the lesson and ensuring the student is able to determine the purpose of the lesson was seen as the biggest opportunity for teachers to improve.Providing teachers with a wealth of data to reflect on their teaching practice is designed to ensure that excellence in teaching can occur across the school.

MAKE UP CLUB

Earlier this year we created a makeup club for students who are interested in the creative process of making makeup and the different techniques used to apply makeup. We started the year off by exploring our skills and putting makeup on each oth-er. We have now decided to make a few different organic products that we are hopefully going to sell. We are in the process of coming up with a name and designing a logo for our products. The next step is to investigate how we are going to make them.
