Why It's Worth It!

Been a proud member since 1990. And with pride, the President for the past 2 years. With that, we will be celebrating a new beginning with our election process. It used to be an election. Having made deeper friendships while conducting the board meetings. I relish in getting off topic and listening to members give more insight into who they are and what guides them in their lives. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! In keeping with tradition we will be painting memory boxes at the February meeting in 2019. I will bring boxes/prep info to the Christmas party, November 26, for you to bring home to have ready to paint in February. Thanks again for the many beautiful boxes we are able to share with grieving families. I would also like to thank Wendy W and Valley Tole Artists for generously donating boxes for our memory box program.

Rondi

Sue Wilson received the following letter from a family that received a memory box….

Hi Susan,

Yesterday, I delivered our sweet angel baby Abigail Rose at just 15 weeks gestation at the University of Michigan hospital. As we were leaving, I found that the staff had compiled a memory box for us with footprints, a tiny outfit and blanket, and a stuffed animal with our little one's name on it. All of it was delivered in this beautiful box. At the bottom of it, I found a card that said it was hand painted by you.

I know that you painted this box and others out of the kindness of your heart, without knowing where it would go or who would end up with it, and that even though it was a beautiful work of art, you'd never see it again. I just want you to know that it ended up with a family that will cherish it forever. I appreciate so much that, like my daughter, this box is one of a kind and special.

I see that this is initiative of a group that you are with, Brush Benders. Please share this note with the group. I'm sure you all don't receive a thank you note for every single box that goes out, but I hope you know that they are a blessing for the parents who receive them.

Thank you for this act of kindness. Right now it is one of the few material things we have to remember our angel baby by.

With love,

Bridgette, Bob, and Abigail

Pumpkin Caramel Poke Cake — Submitted by Paula YIELD: ONE 9X13-INCH CAKE PREP TIME:10 MINUTES

This is a showstopper of a pumpkin cake. It’s a ridiculously easy cake that starts with a boxed mix of spice cake, a can of pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie spice. A mixture of sweetened condensed milk and caramel sundae topping is poured over holes you poke in the cake after baking. Between the pumpkin, sweetened condensed milk, and caramel sundae sauce, it’s one of the moistest cakes ever. The cake is finished with whipped topping, toffee bit, mini chocolate chips, and salted caramel sauce. The salted caramel adds a salty-sweet element, the toffee bits and chocolate chips add texture and contrast to the fluffy whipped topping and uber soft cake.

INGREDIENTS: • one 16.50-ounce box spice cake mix • one 15-ounce can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix) • 1 large egg • 1/3 cup canola or vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice • one 12-ounce can sweetened condensed milk • one 12-ounce jar caramel sundae topping • one 8-ounce container whipped topping, thawed (I used fat

free) • 1/2 cup toffee bits • 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1/3 cup salted caramel sauce (store bought or homemade, regular caramel sauce or

caramel sundae topping may be substituted)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with aluminum foil and spray with cooking

spray; set aside.

2. To a large bowl, add the cake mix, pumpkin puree, egg, oil, pumpkin pie spice, and beat with a handheld electric mixer on high until smooth and combined, about 3 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary.

3. Bake for about 27 to 30 minutes, or until cake is set in the center, springy to the touch, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs but no batter.

4. While the cake bakes combine the sweetened condensed milk, caramel sundae topping, and whisk to combine; set aside.

5. Remove cake from the oven when it’s done and use the blunt end of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake. I didn’t count but I estimate I poked the cake in about 60 places, evenly spaced over the surface.

6. Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk and caramel mixture over the cake, taking your time to evenly distribute it. Place cake in the fridge for about 15 minutes to cool slightly before adding the whipped topping so it doesn’t melt.

7. Remove cake from the fridge, evenly spread the whipped topping over the surface, evenly sprinkle with toffee bits, chocolate chips, and evenly drizzle with salted caramel sauce. Cover cake and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best) before slicing and serving. Cake will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 5 day.

Bacon, Egg and Cheese Brunch Ring Submitted by Paula Ingredients: 4 slices bacon, cut in half, crosswise 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/3 cup plus 1 TBSP milk 1 can (8 oz.) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 4 eggs, slightly beaten 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend (4 oz.) Salt and Pepper, if desired

Chopped fresh cilantro, if desired 1 cup Thick and Chunky salsa, if desired

Steps: 1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Line large cookie sheet with parchment paper. In 10-inch skillet, cook bacon over medium heat about 4 minutes or until cooked but not crisp, turning once. (It will continue to cook in oven.) Set bacon aside; drain all except 2 tsp. bacon drippings from skillet.

2. In medium bowl, beat 1/3 cup of the milk, the eggs, salt and pepper with fork or whisk until well mixed. Stir in bell pepper. Pour egg mixture into skillet. as mixture heats, portions of eggs will begin to set. Gently bush cooked portions with spatula to outside edge of skillet. As more egg sets, push aside.

3. Unroll dough, separate into 8 triangles. On parchment-lined cookie sheet, arrange triangles with shortest sides toward center, overlapping in star shape and leaving a 4-inch round circle open in the center. Crescent dough points may hand over edge of cookie sheet.

4. Place bacon on each of the triangles. Sprinkle 1/3 cup of the cheese onto widest part of dough (around circle area). Spoon eggs over cheese. Sprinkle with 1/3 cup of the cheese. Pull points of triangles over eggs and cheese, and tuck under dough to form ring (filling will be visible). Carefully brush dough with remaining 1 TBSP. milk; sprinkle remaining 1/3 cup cheese.

5. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until deep olden brown. Cool 2 minutes. With broad spatula, carefully loosen ring from cookie sheet; slide onto serving platter. If desired, serve with cilantro and salsa.

Changes made to recipe for brunch: 8 slices bacon - extra pieces went around circle area before cheese (see Step 4.) 6 eggs 1/4 cup chopped onion Placing a 4-inch round bowl in center makes forming ring easier. remove gently before tucking triangle points under. This can be made in a large (9.5 or 10 inch) pie pan. It was easier to assemble on parchment on counter and then slip into pie pan for baking.
