“Many girls hate PE. They start hating it towards the end of primary school when they begin to get self-conscious about their bodies, and this hate intensifies as they get older. Negative attitudes towards physical exercise developed at this point are likely to stay with them long term - hence the need to change hearts and minds.” - Extract taken from The Guardian.

At Ladybridge High School, this isn’t true! We have many different sporting activities and competitions which run all year round. Many girls attend these competitions and we are now at the point where we have students who excel in sports at nationwide competitions.

We were lucky enough to take the time out and interview our own

Ladybridge Stars!

My Mum and Dad wanted me to get into swim lessons so on holi-day, I could go in the pool on my own, but then I enjoyed it so much I wanted to carry on with my lessons and now I'm a national swimmer! I’m in two teams, BMSS - Bolton Metro Swimming Squad and Run-ning and Bolton United Harriers I don't really specialize in any of my sports, because I aim to be a triathlete, which consists of 3 elements, running, swimming and cycling, so i have to balance my training out for all of them. My inspiration is probably Paula Radcliffe, as she's such a good athlete even though she has asthma! I find sport at Ladybridge really enjoyable as it gets everyone to not only enjoy doing their chosen sport but to be successful at it too. I think more girls should get into more sports as its really fun and you can do it just to keep fit aswell. I don't believe there is such thing as 'boys sport' or 'girls sport' as

anyone can do what ever they like as long as they enjoy what they do. In five years I hope to be representing GB in triathlon as I am al-most there now, and hopefully to go to the Olympics as a hopeful to get on the podium. I think that Ladybridge could help with the motivation and the different types of activities in P.E. which can help build my stamina and I’ll also enjoy it more! I have had many achievements in my sports, but my best would be winning the British Biathlon Championships last year and getting to British Swimming Nationals for the first time last year, I hope to go again this year! I have met Kerry Anne-Payne, who was a world championship swimmer in the 10k, Cassandra Patten who also went to the World Championships and Olympics. I have met Michael Rock who's Med-alled in the Olympics and Tom Lancashire who competed in the Olympic games... Tom goes to my running club too! I dont think they're sporting legends, but i think that they are very close to it!

I became interested in sport through my family role mod-els, I started at such a young age and decided to carry it on not just as a hobby, but as a job. I have been in the England fighting squad twice, I fought for England and became a gold medallist. The sport I specialise in is kickboxing. My instructor has always been my role model, I have looked up to him since I started when I was 3 years old. Sport at Ladybridge is great, all the P.E. teachers do their best to help you get the most out of what you do, espe-cially Mrs Doxey!!

Girls should be motivated to enjoy sport, it’s not every-body’s cup of tea but if the more sporty girls motivate the girls who don’t enjoy sport as much it should help them a lot. Netball or Rounders? Hard one!! I love both! In 5 years time I will hopefully be teaching more classes in kickboxing and I will have been to more places around the world. My greatest achievement I have made in my sport is hold-ing world, european and british titles, fighting for the Eng-land team was a real pleasure!

"I like sport at Ladybridge High School because it is fun, well organised and I think it is enjoyable” - Kennedy Johnson

"Girls sport at Ladybridge High is very inter-esting as we do loads of different activities and we also use science and sport together which helps link subjects to give us a better understanding of things!” - Raeesa Mulla

With the netball season fully underway seeing the best teams in the world battle it out on the netball court, girls sport at our school is also about to kickstart. Everyone will make the effort to make this the best year yet for our Netball teams and make sure we win all we can. In world sport, British women have been doing us proud all around the world in a variety of different sports: youth Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones has doubled Britain's medal tally at the Taekwondo championships and Rebecca Addlington has added again to her tally of wins in swimming. Lets hope 2011 continues to be a fantastic year for girls' sport at Ladybridge and for Britain.

ARCADU: The homepage of Arcadu.

Arcadu is a website users get rewarded with games for answering educational questions. It was made by Mr Astley. Your score is recorded and is stored in the ‘League Tables’. You can check your position for your school year, your school, your class or nationally. You can even edit your avatar; it can look however you want it to look. There are fourteen different subjects to revise, and over 80 different sub-categories to choose from. We are lucky enough to have some interviews with Mr. Astley and some students evaluating the website!

PERFORMANCE: Pupils can see their own subject history and how they have performed.

IN THE LEAGUE: Pupils can see where they are in the league tables.

“I use Arcadu sometimes in our I.T. Class and I enjoy using it. Arcadu can be easy to use but I don’t spend a lot of time on it! Arcadu could be improved by having a longer game time.” - Connor Murphy

“I use Arcadu, I enjoy using it and I find it easy to use. I spend quite a lot of time on Arcadu and I think we should spend more lessons on Arcadu during our ICT lessons and it can be improved by add-ing more different subjects to answer the questions.” - La-Sean Mattis

“I don’t use Arcadu but with the look of it I wish I did, It sounds good but I’ve never tried to go on it and I think we should spend more time in our lessons using Arcadu.– Mahrukh Shahid

“I use Arcadu a lot and I enjoy it. It is easy to use, but I don’t spend a lot of time on it. However, I think we should spend more time on it during the ICT lessons. It can be improved by having more game time!” - Tarek Saada

With thanks to, Oliver Beckles, Rahim Miah, Farhaan Musaji, Ibrahim Patel and Tyla

Sutcliffe.

“I use Arcadu and I enjoy it. It is easy to use and I kind of spend a lot of time on it and I think we should spend more time on it during our lessons. It can be improved by adding more games” - Naim Ismail

“I don’t really use Arcadu but when I do, I enjoy using it. It’s easy to use and I think it’s perfect. I wish that more teachers use Arcadu because it will elp us even more in getting our results.” - Prashant Ladva

Here is our interview with Mr. S Astley, the creator of Arcadu.

1. I started at Ladybridge in April 2007 as Head of ICT and started my current role as Assistant Headteacher in April 2009. After the new government cancelled the BSF pro-ject I had been working on for our school I decided to look at other ways we could innovate even more using new technology. I had already seen most of the current software being offered to schools so started to look into making a site myself which did the things I thought stu-dents would want.

2. I’m very confident that Arcadu offers a unique solution to schools, no other site has the blend of games, league tables and differentiated (levels change up and down as you get questions correct or wrong) questions.

3. Rumworth and Rivington both have students using the site and a few other schools are trialling it to see if their students like it. A primary school in Blackburn has just signed up as well. I asked a lot of friends who are teach-ers at other schools about the idea before I started and they love the site as well so I’m hoping they are right!!

4. Educating, engaging, entertaining, exciting, evolving—5 words to describe Arcadu

5. Initially I called the website Learning With Games (which I still use) but I figured this is too long for students and teachers to say in class so I spent about 3 days in the summer holidays trying to find a word that was unique and one that had the .com and .co.uk domain names available. Eventually I wrote down the word arcade and experimented with different endings the ‘U’ came about because it has arcade games for you = Arcadu – I’ve now applied for the trademark to stop anyone else using the name for an education product or website.

6. I wanted to build something that offered a change from traditional homework and something to work alongside

other revision methods (it’s not the only way to revise) and I was pretty sure I had the right idea but I have to admit even I didn’t expect the response we’ve seen. Some students have answered up to 800 questions in 4 weeks If this means they are spending less time on social networks and more time learning then that’s absolutely brilliant!

7. I’m really pleased with how Arcadu has been received at Ladybridge and want to thank the students and staff who have helped to fine tune it over the last few weeks. The challenge now for Ladybridge students is to stay at the top of the league tables as more schools come on board. Remember they will be reset at the start of each term to ensure you all get a fair chance to be the best!

Massive congratulations to the

Ladybridge MOSAIC team.

Massive congratulations go to Gene,

Prashant, Saeed, Mithun, Jasmine, Brad

and Sam for coming third out of 263

schools in the National Mosaic Finals.

The team travelled to London on Wednes-

day 2nd March and delivered a phenome-

nal business pitch to a panel of Mosaic

judges. Mr Gallagher and I sat in the audi-

ence and were hugely proud of them.

Secret Millionaire, Mo Chaudry, made a

point of talking to the team after their

presentation. He was bowled over by

them and we are hoping that he is now

going to work with them on their future

business ventures!

Thanks to their stunning performance, the

team took away with them a cheque for a

stunning ONE THOUSAND POUNDS and a

beautiful trophy.

A lovely day was had by all! Mrs D'Arcy Here are a few quotes about what hap-pened on the day and about the whole mosaic experience: “The finals were really inspiring. We had a really good time. A massive thank you to Salma who guided us through all the good

and bad times. Also without the help of Mrs D'Arcy and Mr Gallagher, it wouldn't of happened. Over-all, it was a fantastic experience and I would love to do it again." - Gene Lock “As team leader I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with, they respected my judgments and have been the best team I have ever been a part of. As I look back now I can remember all the hard work and dedication that went into the chal-lenge, and I am still shocked we didn't win. - Prashant Ladva

“Well done to all who helped achieve this out-standing award The experience was immense and we won’t stop there!” - Saeed Atcha “The business challenge was an exciting roller-coaster, it certainly was a fantastic experience which bought the team together” - Mithun Kerai “It was very beneficial to me and has increased my knowledge in the financial sector” - Samuel Wrigley

Musketeers: (from left) Mrs Hughes, Mrs Lowe.

Mrs Hughes and Mrs Lowe are attempting to raise 8,000 to climb Machu Picchu in Peru, in October 2012. Machu Picchu is one of the 7 wonders of the world, it is built in the Inca style and stands 2430 metres above sea level. 60% of the money raised goes to charity and the remaining amount of money covers all the travel costs etc. Please sup-port Mrs Hughes and Mrs Lowe with their fundraising efforts which include, weekly chocolate tombola's, a summer fair, a car wash day, curry and a quiz night and much much more. In the summer holidays the intrepid two are attempting the Yorkshire 3-peaks challenge which includes climbing 3 mountains in 12hours. Any sponsorship and donations of bottled water or sweets which could help sustain the mouths of our heroes would be gratefully received. After seeing Mrs Lowe drive the school minibus, there is every chance of Mrs Lowe getting lost at the top of the mountain, Finally the team at the Ladybridge High Sports Mania, We would also like to wish Mrs Hughes and Mrs Lowe the very best of luck.

By Saeed Atcha

Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 2,400 meters (7,875 ft) above sea level.

Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu is the most known symbol of

the Inca Empire.

The site was forgotten by the world until 1911, when it was discovered by Hiram Bingham,

an American historian.

Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981.

Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Its buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of Three Windows.

Machu Picchu received great deal of attention after the National Geographic Society devot-

ed their entire April 1913 issue to it.

Machu Picchu comprises of around 140 structures.

We all want to blitz our exams but there can be so much to think about. Get advice on whether or not to revise the night before, how to organise your time during the exam and how to pick up extra marks here; plus general top tips for exam time...

Should I revise the night before?

Look over your notes, but not for too long. Get an early night; sitting up late cramming often makes things worse and confuses your memory. If you can't sleep, make a warm milky drink. Fresh air helps too; the exercise will reduce your stress levels.

How should I organise my time in the exam?

Spend a few minutes at the start reading the instructions and questions carefully. Make a rough plan of how long to spend on each section, and what you plan to cover, and stick to it. Start with the question you think you can answer best. Double-check your answers at the end. If you start to feel panicky, breathe slowly and deeply. If your mind goes blank, remember you probably know more than you think you do.

How can I pick up extra marks?

If it's an essay paper, write a short essay plan (e.g. paragraph headings) and cross it out when you're finished. If you run out of time, leave the plan in your notes - you might get extra marks. In language exams, try to use different forms of verbs and tenses to show the examiners how good you are. In science and maths exams show all your working out - you could pick up a few points for using the correct method, even if your final answer's wrong.

Should I compare answers with my mates after-wards?

No! Don't get sucked into endless discussions about the exam with your mates. They always seem to know the best answer to question 9B, and it's never the same as the one you had. You could end up worrying about it for weeks, when you were right all along.

I’ve been teaching at this school since: September 2004— now in my seventh year! My best bit during my time here at lhs has been: The best is yet to come I hope! When I was a child I wanted to be: A nurse, but it was never meant to be as I can’t stand the smell of hospitals. I’m not that good at: Keeping my desk tidy. My favourite night out: Nice restaurant and a trip to the theatre/cinema. The shop I can’t walk past: Habitat. 5 words that most describes me: Disorganised, ditzy, caring, thoughtful and cheeky. My idea of movie heaven is: Something with sub-titles. My favourite gadget: The channel changer (the remote). My first impressions of the school were: its much nicer than I had imagined it to be. Is the school a happy place to be: most of the time and depending on whose company you are in. Has the school changed since I’ve been here: Yes—Lots. Most annoying habit: I don’t do anything annoying (however some would disagree)* I’m most likely to say: “I read an interesting article in the guardian” My most embarrassing moment: I ate someone’s bread in the staffroom and they asked me about it in front of lots of people—it was their lunch. I’m so sorry carol! If I was invisible for a day, I would: Sit in the staffroom

and listen to what people say about me! I hope it’s all

good ;].

I’ve been teaching at this school: 13 years. My best bit during my time here at lhs has been: Having the good fortune to work with excellent staff and students! When I was a child I wanted to be: An astronaut or a pilot. I’m not that good at: Mathematics. My favourite night out: A night in with my family with some Ben + Jerry’s ice cream. The shop I can’t walk past: Any which sells Crème Eggs! (only joking!). 5 words that most describes me: I am getting really old! My idea of movie heaven is: Lord of the rings or Kung Fu Panda! My favourite gadget: My children’s PSP’s with Grand Turismo on them! My first impressions of the school were: Sorry… too long ago to remember! Is the school a happy place to be: Definitely! Has the school changed since I’ve been here: Beyond Belief My most memorable moment: In school - Too many! Results Day last year, students win-ning awards such as an Anne Frank award and Diana Prin-cess of Wales Award, not turning up for my performance management lesson - My year 9’s had to take the start of the lesson! If I was invisible for a day, I would: Come to work as usual and get on with my job!
