up with Kingsley for reaction to this latest honor and what turned out to be an emotional look back at his career. Best Friend A Boy Can Have: The prevailing message? "I'm just over the top," Kingsley beams. "You know that feeling sometimes when you just get overwhelmed? That's how this is. Every time I go to the Hall Of Fame website, I see people in there who were heroes to me as a kid." Serious heroes for a serious situation. Kingsley was bedridden and quarantined for more than a year during his youth after contracting polio. His grandmother, the only person allowed near him, provided a radio that became his primary entertainment. "Those memories just came flooding back this morning," he admits. "I was just this scared-to-death kid. But that radio, man. I've got this big picture of laying there in bed listening to things like The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, Amos & Andy, The Green Hornet and Jack Benny. And I see those names and think, 'I'm gonna be hanging in the hall with these people?' It's an honor almost beyond my scope of understanding." Best Is History: Kingsley recovered, of course, and Rock 'n' Roll followed. "I discovered KFWB-AM/Los Angeles," he says. "Al Jarvis and Joe Yocum did a countdown from nine to noon every Saturday morning and I never missed it. I was working as a box boy at a local market not far from home and I would sneak out to people's cars – nobody locked their cars then – and get in and turn the radio on. I had to hear the top 10 and I was always so disappointed when the song I thought should be No. 1 was not. I always believed a countdown was a good thing for a radio station." Kingsley's entry into radio came while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He landed a job as an announcer on Armed Forces Radio's TFK while stationed in Iceland. "The first time I flipped that microphone on I thought, 'Man I am absolutely in heaven,'" he says. "I didn't care – did not care – about making a dollar. I just wanted to play records on the radio." And that he's done for almost 60 years. Radio history, no doubt. KGBS-AM/Los Angeles and KLAC-AM/Los Angeles are on his resume, the latter he programmed in the early '70s. He became Producer of the Casey Kasem and Tom Rounds-created American Country Countdown in 1974 and took over as host in '78. A new distribution deal in 2006 made him host of Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40. Mark My Words: What's been the best part of it all? "The same thing I'm looking forward to today," he says. "When I walk in that door like I do every Monday and that theme hits, for the next four or five hours I am there. Truly. I love the artists, the songs and the writers–even the new artists who nationally may not be big-time yet. I know out there in their hometown somewhere their mother, friends or somebody that knows them is listening, and they're thrilled to death at

what they're hearing. I can see 'em turn their radio up a dB or two and saying, "Kingsley, man, he's talking about whoever!" Count one observant member of the U.S. military among them, but for a different reason. "I got a note not long ago from an airman that said, 'Hey, we just took this old radio console apart that's been in storage for like 30 years. Is that 'B-K' on it you?' It was. I did – I got underneath there one night and carved my name on it. I was just getting ready to come back to the states all those years ago and thought, 'I gotta leave my mark on this.'" Congratulate Kingsley here. –Russ Penuell

Garth Storms Yankee Stadium Garth Brooks marked his return to New York City 19 years after playing Central Park with a pair of Yankee Stadium shows Friday and Saturday nights. And, because not even Garth can control the weather, the two shows were decidedly different. The Friday show – which you will likely be able to see in video form in the future – was described by the New York Times' Jon Caramanica as "a rousing hour and a half full of honky-tonk anthems, aching ballads and lots and lots of running." I was among a group of folks Garth brought to NYC for the Saturday night show, which was delayed almost three hours by torrential rains and lightning that kept the lighting and camera crews out of the towers. The only thing missing from Saturday's show was all the running; the rain made the stage's enormous circle too dangerous for full-speed laps. I must add, though, that some of those gathered in the suite were taking bets during the rain delay as to whether or not Garth would realize it was too dangerous. Many felt that, in typical Garth fashion, he'd give it a galloping go, regardless.

He put those questions to rest when he came out and told the crowd he was going to do "a slightly different show." So he, and later wife Trisha Yearwood, merely walked the stage that took them deep into the crowd for a more intimate evening than the fans had perhaps anticipated. Prior to the show, Garth told me the giant ring around the stage was part of the stage originally custom-designed for Dublin's Croke Park Stadium concerts, planned for July 2014 but canceled when the city council was going to cut the number of shows from five to three. The circle – more like a race-track – measured 150-feet across the diameter and was 10 feet above the rear of the stage, dropping to four feet high as it reached into the crowd. There was room for 1800 fans inside the circle. Garth and Trisha treated the fans sitting through the delay to a show lasting more than two and a half hours. According to setlist.fm, the night featured 26 songs, including a mid-set duet with Trisha on "In Another's Eyes," followed by four more from her. Garth did seven songs acoustically, including Bob Seger's "Night Moves" and Billy Joel's "Piano Man." Friday night featured 21 total tunes, five of which were Garth alone on guitar. Oddly enough, Garth's Saturday set omitted Friday night's show-opener, a song even more appropriate for a concert that started at 11:50pm – "Ain't Goin' Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up.)" In full disclosure, we had to leave a little more than halfway into the show to get back to Nashville. But from what I saw – and I went down to the pit for some of the show – the fans' enthusiasm for Garth wasn't dampened in the least. And he responded to their thunderous, albeit wet, reception noting, "Going through what you have gone through tonight … I should have come back to this great city a helluva lot sooner than this." The folks singing and dancing in the pit heartily agreed. It was, after all, still Garth performing at a level few artists ever achieve. – Lon Helton

Chart Chat Congratulations to Jason Aldean, Carson James, Lee Adams, Jim Malito and the Broken Bow promotion staff on "Lights Come On" reaching the No. 1 spot on this week's chart. The song is the first single from his upcoming album They Don't Know. And kudos to Tim McGraw, Jack Purcell, Erik Powell and the Big Machine team on "How I'll Always Be" notching 51 adds, topping this week's board.

UPDATE

Broken Bow’s Jordan Rager discusses his most influential music:1. Alan Jackson: My first memory of music was at age four or five. I was riding in my granddad’s truck. We were going fishing and his song “Here In The Real World” came on the radio. Even at that young age I remember thinking, “I like the sound of that. That’s really cool.” 2. George Strait’s “The Chair:” It’s the world’s greatest pickup line, first of all. I’ve

always been drawn to that song because from the first time I heard it, I had no idea where it was going until the end.3. ‘90s Country: If you couldn’t tell, I’m a very big fan of country music from that era. I love “Everywhere” by Tim McGraw and “Sunday In The South” by Shenandoah.4. Eagles’ Hotel California: It was the first album I ever listened to front to back. I remember being younger and my dad would play a lot of the Eagles. I’d hear it but not really hear it. At 15 or 16, I actually listened – and I haven’t stopped loving it.5. Kenny Chesney in Nashville, 2015: Me and a buddy got tickets and it was the first time I ever got to see Chesney. He played every song I could’ve hoped he would play. He never lost me. He was entertaining from start to finish. I remember thinking, “That’s what I want to do.”• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I know they’re one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time, and I’m a heavy metal fan, but I’ve never heard a single Iron Maiden song in my life.• “Important” music you just don’t get: Opera is something I could never get on board with.• An album you played incessantly: Chris Stapleton’s Traveller. I have worn that thing out and I’m still not tired of it. I’ve bought two or three copies since it’s come out.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Justin Bieber’s new record is pretty cool. If you had talked to me a year ago, I would’ve never said that or admitted it. I was forced to listen to it and now I love it. I’m officially a Belieber.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Probably Bieber. I’m okay with being a fan now. I’ve even covered “Love Yourself” in my show. Everyone was digging it.

story. We also have influencers in our life that make us want to do what they are doing, and then other people who do things you don't ever want to do. Like what? It's funny to hear PDs – and I used to be one who did so I'll cop to it – complain about the sample rates for PPM. They aren't significant enough, the ratings are unstable, but then turn around

Warner Bros./WAR’s The Last Bandoleros put an industry spin on the artist interview: Diego Navaira: My father was a successful Tejano musician (Emilio) and was fortunate enough to cross over to country music. He toured with George Strait, Alan Jackson

and Clay Walker. He’s the reason I discovered country music. Jerry Fuentes: Diego and I worked at the same studio. Country music is the music I learned how to produce on. Derek James: My first introduction to country was through my guitar teacher. He showed me Chet Akins and Jerry Reed. And my college roommate would wake me up every day with Travis Tritt’s “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” I was also invited to a cattle drive a few years ago. I fell in love with being a cowboy. DN: On a radio tour, you’re in a rush the entire time. We’ve left some stuff behind. Once, Jerry left his wallet and another time I left my in-ear monitors. We were about three hours from playing a show and our runner had to go back to the hotel and get them for me. DJ: Warner got us an Entertainer Coach so we have our first tour bus. When we’re not in the bus, we’re usually in my Saturn Station Wagon. I’m pretty sure it’s the last Saturn ever made. DN: Jerry is always the one picking where we eat. JF: I’ve gotten really good at using Yelp. DN: Let’s put it this way. If it doesn’t have four stars on Yelp, The Last Bandoleros will not be eating there. DJ: Every time we go into a gas station, since I’m a sucker for orange Tic Tacs, I get those. And we’re all really into the spicy almonds. JF: I would probably make Mexican food if I could cook for anyone. I’ve gotten pretty good at making salsa and guacamole. I would want to have dinner with the author Malcolm Gladwell. DJ: I would invite Mario Batali and have him cook! JF: Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Texas Tornados, and Eagles harmonies all put together in a blender with ice and tequila –that’s our music.

and drop your song based on an M Score, which is a direct correlation off of the same sample they're complaining about. I also understand that can be a way out of playing a song they don't believe in. And that's okay. That's the nature of the business. What about accessibility? I always prided myself on returning phone calls as fast as I could because I wanted my phone calls returned. Not everybody works that way, he says with a smile. Most of the PDs, 95%, have been amazing. Communication overall is fantastic. There are always people who don't want to talk, and right now we're only calling about one artist and single. PDs are incredibly busy, and I know that. I always tell them I appreciate their response more than anything because I know how busy they can be. Time is everything. Have you ever given a former colleague or a young PD/MD radio advice if you thought they were doing something wrong? No! That’s their kingdom and the way they work. So you just bite your tongue if you see something out of whack? There’s no telling what’s going on that day, in that moment, at that radio station when you walk in with an artist. Like I said, most have been amazing on Chris Lane's radio tour. There have been a few where something happened and an hour turned into 10 minutes or the conference room turned into the break room and people were getting coffee. We laugh about it now. Those stories make our journeys memorable. And I've been on the other side where a meeting got set and I couldn't devote the time to a visit. We don't take it personally. Do you have a different perspective now regarding On The Verge and other spin programs? You have to when you see the impact of spins on a new, independent label artist like Chris Lane, both positive and negative. If you’re that [spin program's chosen] artist, it’s an amazing, positive impact. If you’re not that artist, it takes lots away. There are only so many songs a radio station can play in a day. You have to figure out a way around it and push through. Do those factors complicate telling your story on the charts? Oh, it's been told back to us. The PDs are watching. Chris Lane did not get On The Verge, Maren Morris did instead and was well deserving. There were a lot of PDs who assumed we got On The Verge just because of my background. We still have people bring up our jumpstart with On The Verge, but every bit of this has been done with blood, sweat, and tears.

Also, from a radio perspective, how you look at the artist and label is dictated by what company you work for. The other companies look at it as, "Well, that's a CBS artist." "That's an iHeart artist." Because they took ownership and lifted them, which is a very good thing. At the same time there's a backside. How is that going to impact me with Entercom, Townsquare and others. It can be a double-edged sword. Do you view competitive market situations differently now? In radio there were times I was on the heritage side and times when I was the attacker. I understand why a heritage station would want to protect its turf and why a new station would try to get into everything it possibly could. It never mattered to me what the other guy does. If someone comes in with a bigger and better idea, that means I got beat. Plain and simple. I’m not thinking proactively enough. I've been in meet-and-greet situations in radio where the heritage station wanted its own room so they wouldn't have to be in there with us, and that always made me feel bad for the artist, mainly. I'm as competitive as anybody, but it’s bad for business – artists, labels and radio – when it gets vindictive with refusing to play music. If you’re both reporters, we have to do business with both stations. My advice is to be the most creative, proactive, and dynamic radio station you can to the artists, labels and your listeners and the rest will take care of itself. But we all have to deal with it and everything isn't rational. (laughs) Any particular moments stand out for you in the run you've had with Chris? In that three- to four-week period where so many core artists were dropping singles right around the ACMs, I'm really proud of our team for surviving that. A lot of people have believed in Chris as an artist, and I’m really happy with the fighting spirit and passion of the team. There's that tribal mentality you see when someone is wearing a Chris Lane shirt at a show. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing fans who are passionate for a brand you've helped build. I get teary-eyed at shows when I see fans singing the words to “Fix.” That means we’re doing our jobs. Reach Hunnicutt here. –Chuck Aly

Lanco Can: Arista’s Lanco bandmates are scattered among the throng of friends, Arista and Sony Nashville promoters and the Hill Entertainment management team on hand to help the guys celebrate a huge first-week number of radio adds at Nashville’s Losers earlier today. Stop by to wish them well tonight if you can – chances are good they’re still there.
