The builders will move in on Monday 11 April (Week 11) and prepare the site for demolition during the term break. There had been some uncertainty in regard to asbestos removal and a full campus shutdown. The builders clarified that there is no need for such and all such work will be contained on the actual building site. To be clear, the type of asbestos is not air- borne etc. So, we can operate as usual and the building site will have restricted access over the construction period. Due to the building program, we will need to relocate lunchtime access to the oval to elsewhere on the main campus. We will still be able to play College matches and train on the oval with temporary change rooms to be located back on the main campus. Toilet facilities will also be on the main campus. As with all such projects there will short term dislocation in order to achieve a very significant addition to Sacred Heart's resources. 43 Oaklands Road Recently, the Sacred Heart College Foundation purchased a commercial property for College use. The property will initially provide required storage for relocated grounds and maintenance materials and, in time, the Uniform Shop will be relocated. My sincere thanks to the Foundation for assisting us in this way, especially the Foundation Board members: Mr Jim Whiting, Mr Tom Spurling, Mr Shaun Moroney, Mr Rob Chapman, Mrs Paula Brinkworth, Mr Jon Flaherty and Mr Peter Whelan. As you might imagine, preparations by the Grounds and Maintenance Staff for their relocation have been challenging and I wish to recognise this - well done, team! World Educational Leadership Summit 2016 This week, as part of my Professional Learning Plan, I have been attending this summit in Singapore which included a master class with Professor Peter Senge - one can always keep learning! During my absence, Mr Daniel Lynch, Head of Senior School (Deputy Principal) assumed the role of Principal until my return Thursday and I thank him for his support.

Changes to Volunteer Police Checks The Catholic Church in SA has recently foreshadowed changes to some of the arrangements relating to police checks for volunteers These changes are consistent with moves across South Australia to align the volunteer policy checking process more closely with recommendations arising from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse While the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaidersquos Police Check Unit (PCU) will still manage the policy check process some of the changes effective from 1 May include

Sourcing a Working with Children Check through the SA Governmentrsquos Department for Families amp Social Inclusion (DCSI)

A Streamlined a simpler application process

The opportunity for volunteers to volunteer on 7 occasions per year without the requirement for a police check (where the volunteering does not include excursions or overnight stays)

No requirement for children under 18 years of age to hold a check

The provision of a convenient wallet-sized clearance card as distinct from a clearance letter As our College transitions to the new arrangements by 1 May is it possible that we may invite you to renew your current check prior to its usual expiry data under the current arrangements If this is the case we will contact you In the meantime if you have any questions with regards to police checks as a volunteer please contact Sue Moss (Senior School) on 8350 2557 or Fiona Rixon (Middle School) on 8275 5912 Peter McCabe Business Manager - Operations

Mindfulness In recent years Mindfulness meditation has surged in popularity for use in the treatment of stress resilience anxiety depression and other physical and mental illnesses Highly regarded institutions such as UCLA Harvard Oxford Monash and Melbourne Universities have developed clinical studies into the positive impacts of Mindfulness meditation Mindfulness is about training yourself to pay attention to the here and now When a person is mindful they focus on the present moment try not to think about anything that went on in the past or that might be coming up in future but purposefully concentrate on whatrsquos happening around them Being Mindful can help

clear your head

you to be more aware of yourself your body and the environment

to slow down and sharpen your thinking

to slow down your breathing and heart rate

you to concentrate

you relax

you cope with and manage stress Mindfulness is something that everyone can develop and itrsquos something that everyone can try You can increase your mindfulness in everyday life through activities like meditation prayer and yoga Simply slowing down and paying more attention to your senses and your immediate environment and taking the time to smell the roses are excellent ways to become more mindful and start to reap the benefits to your physical and mental health See more at smilingmindcomau or aureachoutcomwhat-is-mindfulness Chris Egan Middle School Counsellor
