We are pleased to announce that Aidan Louw in Year 10 has been selected, from over 17,000 applicants, to exhibit his work at the RA Young Artists’ Summer Show. Aiden’s brief was to produce a self-portrait entitled “Selfie” which he produced using water colour crayons.Mrs Messam entered a selection of students’ art work for this annual event and Aidan’s work will be exhibited online from 12 July as well as being exhibited on-site at the Royal Academy in the autumn (date tbc). This is a real accolade for Aidan and testament to his hard work and commitment to developing his artistic abilities. He spends a lot of his time producing artwork at home and in extra-curricular sessions in the art room. He really is a talented artist (as are many of

our GCSE students).Watch this space for more news of our talented students and the work they have been producing during Lockdown.

and to support this we will be operating a staggered timetable. This will mean students in different year groups will arrive at and leave the academy at different times.

Year Start Time End Time7 08:30 15:158 08:45 15:309 09:00 15:4510 09:15 16:0011 09:30 16:15

Students must arrive at the academy at their allocated time and must not arrive late to school. Any student who arrives to the academy using public transport must adhere to the government guidelines on face coverings. Face coverings must be placed into the student’s bag before entering the building and the student must then ensure they sanitise their hands. Any disposable face coverings must be placed inside a carrier bag and disposed of in the bins outside the building, before entering. The School DayWe are committed to ensuring our students receive a full timetable and the full curriculum offering. They have missed out on a significant amount of learning time with their specialist subject teachers and we are dedicated to ensuring that we catch up on any lost learning. The new school day will also include a commitment to supporting our students’ mental health and well-being. This will be a focus in our tutor time along with our new PHSE and relationships curriculum. We will not be holding large gatherings, and as such assemblies will not take place in the usual way. Assemblies are an important part of school life, however, and these will be held using TEAMS in classrooms to ensure we are still able to communicate consistently. Please find a full guide to returning to the Academy here where you will find a Timetable including information about breaks and lunchtimes, year group zones explained, Student support, hygiene rules, Classroom layout, movement around the academy, equipment, uniform, parental site visits, site cleaning as well as what students should do if they are feeling unwell. If you have any questions please email the academy to: [email protected]

DramaYoung REP Drama Club

It is with the greatest regret that we had to cancel our performance of ‘City of Mirrors’ as part of the Satellite Festival at the REP, due to the Corona Virus outbreak.Fortunately, the team at the REP were able to continue their work with us digitally. I would like to say a big thank you to our REP director Fin for creating a selection of recorded resources to help our Young REP members develop their practical skills further. We want to thank all of the Young REP members for their hard work, support and commitment throughout the year and hope to see you in the rehearsal room again in near future.

Year 10The drama department would like to say

huge congratulations to the year 10 drama students for all of the hard work, dedication and effort they put in to their examined performances. They were true professionals throughout technical and dress rehearsal and the audience thoroughly appreciated their final performances.

Year 11We would like to bid a fond farewell to our year 11 pupils. They all worked incredibly hard putting together their portfolios, presentations and performance extracts

for Unit 1 and it was fantastic that I was fortunate enough to witness a selection of these before we went into lockdown. It has been a pleasure seeing the year 11s improve their confidence, maturity and commitment from year 7 to year 11. It is very sad that their time in drama ended the way it did but I wish them all the best in the future and I hope to see them in the audience for one of our future shows!

Mr Page

Unfortunately as you know we haven’t really been able to do our performances this academic year but just wanted to thank our dance students for their participation by celebrating with a snippet of some of our favourite moments. Stay active over the summer and we can’t wait to see you in September.

Music

Spotlight on CommunityUpdate from Paul Tucker, our Ambassador Chair

What a strange few months it has been not being in school and seeing you all. This hasn’t stopped

some of you still engaging with music so well! Using Soundtrap, learning the cup song, creating beats using items in your kitchen and creating remixes have been the stand out creations for me.

Honourable mentions to Caitlyn Jones, Ella Whitlock and Hannah Stubbs for great videos as well as the Year 9 and 10 students for working so hard at home especially Kaylee Moore, Eden Richardson, Angela Manalastas, Elliot Thurman and Joe Tucker. If you have any work you want to keep on Soundtrap, please download the MP3 before the end of the month when our trial of the software ends. If you want to carry on

working on it on a different piece of music software (plenty of free ones available) download the MIDI file and import this into your chosen software to develop further. Well done again for all of your musical efforts and I hope to see you all in September!

On Saturday 11th July it would have been the annual Weoley Castle Festival. Unfortunately a number

of community events have been cancelled over the past few months so we’ve given our Love Weoley Castle planters that are dotted across the estate some ‘tlc’. Hopefully

it won’t be too long before we can start planning future events that celebrate our community. We know of so many positive stories of kindness and generosity during this challenging time. Stay safe and we’ll see you when school reopens in September.

Athletics Talent Day

Street 2 Stadium Birmingham ProgrammeThe programme is aimed at identifying both students with and without disabilities who have a talent for athletics. The session consisted of a sprint, throw and jump with top performers being identified by British Athletics who will be there in full force on the day, together with paralympic head coach Paula Dunn MBE.This was a fantastic opportunity, and meant that they were able to compete against some of the top athletes in Birmingham alongside being coached by national coaches. All students performed well on the day and were praised by the coaches

for their discipline and positive inclusive attitude. I look forward to using this experience in the summer term. Sport LeadershipSchool Games

A hugely successful School Games sports leadership programme saw over 60 students from year 7-11 trained up in the delivery of a wide range of sports events this year. This involved them planning, preparing, setting up, delivering, demonstrating and evaluating a host of sports competitions. Throughout these events they were responsible for looking after younger children; providing them with support and guidance whilst also officiating and keeping track of scores. It is always great to see our young leaders displaying effective organisation and communication skills as well as having the confidence to step outside of their comfort zone. Well done to all students involved.

Inter College and South Birmingham Cross Country ChampionshipsIn October we ran the Inter-College cross country which saw pupils compete against their year groups and gender in races from a mile to a mile and a half. It was also an opportunity to be a sports leader and help marshal the course or be part of the warm up for the athletes. With superb enthusiasm and determination all pupils completed the course and some then were selected

to represent the school in the South Birmingham Championships the following week. This was held at our very own Shenley fields where over 15 schools brought around 150 athletes to compete on our gruelling hills and extensive course to gain a place in the South Birmingham cross country team. An excellent achievement goes to Charlie Brayshaw who medalled in the inter boys race. Thank you also to the sport leaders who supported by marshalling the course, who were also praised by other teachers attending from the local schools about their professionalism and enthusiasm.

FootballYear 7 Boys

The year 7 boys had a really positive season. They won all of their games in their local league and finished top of the league. They also competed really well in the All Birmingham Cup but came up against a really strong team from Solihull who stopped them from progressing further. At times they played some expansive and free flowing football and we hope that they can combine this with some discipline and resilience to ensure they continue to have further successes in the future.. Shenley year 9 boys had an incredible season going unbeaten in all competitions. They finished top of their local league and qualified for the All Birmingham Cup Final! They were brilliant throughout the course of the season with some great victories. A special mention goes to their ability to stay strong when the pressure was on during the latter stages of the All Birmingham Cup semi-final where they held on for a deserved 3-2 win! This was a fantastic achievement and the boys displayed huge amounts of team spirit and determination throughout the season in order to gain these successes. Well done to all the students involved, we’re very proud of you!

Year 11 BoysKings Norton and South Birmingham District LeagueShenley Academy 2 – 0 Colmers Sports CollegeShenley Academy 7 – 4 Turves Green BoysShenley Academy 4 – 2 St Thomas AquinasShenley Academy 1 – 4 Bartley GreenThe year 11 football team leave Shenley as a unified team who developed into a very difficult team to beat. Having reached the Kings Norton and South Birmingham quarter finals when they were year 9, they then went one better when in year 10 by getting to the semi-finals. This year they were hoping to go one better by ending their five years of football at Shenley with a Cup final. The improvements in their performance have been a really pleasing aspect of their development and all players understand their role in the team alongside the expectation to work hard for each other. In the group phase of this years’ competition Shenley were drawn in a tough group playing teams who they had previously lost to. A 4-2 victory against St Thomas Aquinas was well deserved and this was followed up with a 7-4 win against last season’s cup finalists Turves Green. Their next group match was a vital match in which victory would guarantee qualification into the semi-finals. In spite of Colmers having the most possession, Shenley continually frustrated them with expert defending and really closed up the gaps for Colmers to play through. This resulted in Colmers not having a single shot at goal in the match even

though they had applied the most pressure. Shenley hit Colmers regularly on the break and created the best chances. This resulted in a fine 2-0 win. Their final group match was a head to head for top spot in the group against an unbeaten Bartley Green. The game remained close for most of the game although Bartley managed to pull away in the last 10 minutes and ran out 4-1 winners.Unfortunately, the covid-19 pandemic meant that the competition was ended and year 11 were unable to play their semi-final. Nonetheless, another good season and we are both proud of how the team has developed in terms of character and performance.Team: Charlie Brayshaw; Alfie Wooldridge; Lewis Fullilove; Kian Richards; Morgan Woodthorpe; Deacon Dempster-Jones; Bobby Bate; Mikah Knight; Byron Dale; Kian Wilcock; Harrison Bates; Shea Boulter; Jack Gossage; Josh Parker

Basketball

Year9 BoysThe year 9 boys’ basketball team had a lot of success this season. They played 8 games throughout the season and finished the season unbeaten! They worked fantastically well as a team and produced some great performances. The biggest achievement was the 44-4 victory over their local rivals, Bartley Green! Well done to the Team: Sam Kettle, Alfie Thomas, Joshua N’Sapu, Casey Tierney, George Alison, Cameron Shelley, Rudel Farrel-Reid and Ryan Needle.

Year 11 BoysBirmingham Schools Basketball LeagueKE Camp Hill 41 - Shenley Academy 11Biship Challoner 27 - Shenley Academy 25KNBS 25 - Shenley Academy 24Year 11 finished their five years of basketball at Shenley with three matches in January. They travelled away to Kings Edwards Camp Hill and put in a disappointing performance which saw them lose 41 – 11. Following this the boys displayed renewed focus and application. The two matches that followed were classics and the year 11’s showed how they can play as a team and never gave up.

Against Bishop Challoner Sports College the match swung backwards and forwards as both teams could not build a substantial lead against the other. Kairuz Pagba controlled parts of the match at point guard and spotted space and drove well to the basket. Defence from Josh Davies-Walls was superb as he made a number of impressive checks. The match was played in fantastic sportsmanship and ended in an agonising 27 – 25 defeat. The final match of their Shenley basketball careers against a strong Kings Norton boys’ school team was a wonderful game. KN boys had beaten Shenley comfortably last season but this was a much closer affair. Shenley would not allow KNBS to gain a large lead and kept coming back to narrow the points difference. Kyran Baxter was at times unplayable as he dominated at key times in the match. Jack Timbrell and Michael Coakley drove well and were alert in defence. Shenley were just 1 point behind with 20 seconds to play and having forced KNBS into an error. Shenley regained possession and the ball was moved to Kairuz Pagba who off balance and under severe pressure shot from outside of the key on the left hand side of the court. The ball rattled the hoop before popping out to leave the score at 25 – 24 to KNBS. The boys were left downbeat but proud of their performance. I have been really pleased and proud of the boys’ respect and improvement in performance over the last five years. They have been a credit to themselves and I have enjoyed coaching them. The Team: K Baxter; K Pagba; S Young; J Davies-Walls; E Ashley; M Coakley; N Hancocks; J Timbrell; R Beltran; J Vergara; O Walton.

HandballYear 10 boysThe year 10 boys performed really well at the Birmingham School Games finals after successfully qualifying. They played with passion and dynamism and were a really tough team to play against. Their first game was a 6-2 win against Ark Victoria, they then drew 4 – 4 with their local rivals, Bartley Green. Unfortunately, they lost their

final game against St Edmund Campion and missed out on the play offs by goal difference.

Athletics

Great effort from the year 7 and year 8 girls sports hall athletics teams!! Narrowly missing out on the city finals! The boys teams also competed extremely well in their qualifiers and have qualified through to the Birmingham School Games finals which take place at the University of Birmingham on Wednesday 25th March.

Netball Year 9 - Girls This team are a focused and hard working squad. They commit to training and work hard both on and off the court. The season has been mixed where they were tested with injuries and set positions having to be altered, but continued to support the team even when unable to play. The highlights are a close victory against St Thomas Aquinas where Shenley won 11-9. Also a win against Swanshurst Girls School, where there was a wonderful flow of play continuously with defence and attack working seamlessly together. Final score 13-3. Finishing 4th out of 9 in the Kings Norton Netball League.5th March 2020 Kings Norton Schools Netball TournamentThe season was completed with the annual Kings Norton Netball Tournament held at Bartley Green. This was a play all teams set up, where the two top teams play a straight final. Again, as they have all season, the team were focused and full of energy. They played with commitment to both attack and defence and worked hard to move the ball up the court to the

shooters. Communication was positive and productive for every game and they were rewarded with a draw against a ‘club’ team, 2 wins and one loss by one goal in the last minute. This kept us just out of the final but excellent play throughout meant that the team should be proud of their performance. Keep up the commitment, drive and ethos to improve for next season. Isobel Mason-Burns, Jasmine Hurlston-Singh, Ellie Wood, Lauren Johns, Millie Eustace, Angela Manalastas, Aleesha-Mae Spoor-Fowkes, Kanzi Mitchell-Lewis © ,Zoe Taylor and Tayla Rees. 26th February 2020 Kings Norton Schools

Netball Tournament On a very cold and bitter afternoon the year 8 netball team took to the courts to play in the annual tournament. Despite the conditions, Shenley played in the round robin section with enthusiasm and positivity. Teams entered are from all the divisions and many of their games were those in higher leagues. This did not stop the commitment and dedication to each match. The team also took an opportunity to experience different positions in preparation of future seasons. The games were close, by only a few goals behind, and a draw in one game. This unfortunately was not enough to proceed to the semi-finals but I am extremely proud of their effort in each match throughout the tournament and also the season. The squad are a supportive and respectful team both on and off the court.

The Team: Milly McGettrick; Isatu Bah; Sairah Jones; Grace Shaw; Hannah Prentice; Amira, Renee Richards; Gracie Wingfield; Maise Green; Layla Balcombe; Amy Sargeant and Lily Aaron.
