TARS TARS cards are part of the school Positive Behaviour for Learning Program. This program acknowledges the positive behaviour of students within their classes. The program has been running for approximately three weeks and we have had 36 students complete their first TARS card and one student has completed their second card. Once students complete a TARS card they are eligible to receive a reward for doing so. Congratulations and well done to all students and staff for such a positive start to this program. Student ID Cards All students who were present for school photos have now been issued with their Student ID Cards. From this point forward students should be using their ID cards when they are purchasing food from the tuckshop. Using ID cards makes the process of serving students at the tuckshop a lot easier for the volunteers who assist in the tuckshop. If students find that their ID card is not working correctly at the tuckshop, please see the ladies in the office. Students who were absent for school photos please see Ms Geddes to have your photo taken. These photos will then be used to make an ID card for the students. Cheers Mrs Coulson

(Hello China)

After months of careful planning and a lot of excitement being generated around the school, we have now been forced to make the decision to cancel the student trip to China in June/July this year.

Coronavirus has changed the travel plans for millions of people worldwide and we were just unfortunate that this has also affected our plans for an amazing trip.

Staff and students that had booked the tour are extremely disappointed and many have asked if we will consider a similar trip to another destination - all I can say at the moment is never say never. We will see what the weeks and months may bring.

Qinqie de wenhou (kind regards) ,

Tanya Oppermann

Welcome to BSC I.C.T. Department

This year, BSC have introduced I.C.T. from Years 7 to 12. According to

the Australian Bureau of Statistics 97% of households with children

aged under 15 years have access to the internet and the average

number of devices per household is now 7. 99% of people aged

between 15 and 17 are online and are spending an average of 18

hours per week online. With the introduction of more social media

platforms such as Tik Tok this number is increasing rapidly. New

figures suggest that there are currently over 500 million active users of

Tik Tok alone, who are spending over 50 minutes a day just on that

platform.

Below is a snapshot of what is happening in I.C.T. in Semester 1.

Year 7 and 8 ICT

Introduction to Computers:

During our one lesson a week students have been looking at the basics of how computers work

as well as popular software programs such as Word, Outlook and PowerPoint. We have also been

practicing our touch typing as well as looking at how to set up folders, how to effectively

communicate when sending emails as well as naming of files so that they can be retrieved easily

later on.

At the end of the semester, students will submit a Portfolio of work that demonstrates the ICT

skills and knowledge learnt over the 20 weeks.

Year 9 and 10 ICT

Document Production:

This Semester has seen students learning about different software capabilities. From typing

letters, to mail merges, students have also learnt how to import and export across different

software programs as well as how to use data to produce graphs and tables. In Portfolio 1,

students had to research skills and techniques on how to perform different functions and then in

Portfolio 2 they put that knowledge to practice by producing specific documentation.

Current statistics tell us that there are just over 7.6 billion people in the world and from that

almost 4.4 billion are on the internet and just under 3.5 billion are active social media users.

In a world that is rapidly growing with technology, it is wonderful to see how many students at

BSC have embraced I.C.T.

Robyn Geddes

I.C.T Teacher

Year 11 ICT

Throughout this Semester, we have focussed on online issues in the 21st Century. We have

studied how our online identity is essential in our daily lives and how to use strategies for

safety and security measures to prevent hacking, identity theft and so forth. Students have

used the case study of Mariott Hotel’s 2014 data breach to look at how businesses can

protect themselves online. After they have submitted their Extended Response, students will

begin working on their project where they will design the theme and documents required for

the 2020 BSC Formal.

Year 12 ICT

Students have been very busy from the start of Week 1 working on both their Extended

Response as well as their project at the same time. This Semester sees students writing a

magazine article for parents and teens on cyber safety. With a 2016 report from the

Cyberbullying Research Centre indicating that 33.8% of students between the ages of 12 and

17 were victims of cyberbullying, this topic is not only relevant but imperative in making sure

that students understand how to keep themselves safe when online. Students are also

working on their magazine project with each student not only designing theme pages for the

2020 school magazine but also creating the junior home group pages.

Special Education Welcome back to the 2020 school year, and welcome to Mr Michael Cook as our new Special Education Teacher.

LIFE ROOM

The past weeks in the LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) Room our junior secondary students have been working on Maths, Science, History and Literacy with Mr Cook.

Literacy - Persuasive Texts

In the Life Room students are currently learning about ‘Persuasive texts’ i.e. points of view, differing points of view, arguments and the use of certain ‘modal verbs’ to add validity to ones point of view or persuasion. Our latest lesson involved pairing up students with an argument of interests. One argument was ‘Motorbikes are better than horses’ while the other ‘Horses are better than motorbikes’. After further exploring useful ‘modal verbs’, and using information from the above mentioned arguments, we will have students in future lessons write persuasive paragraphs to further build on their points of view whilst also learning about sentence structure.

Mathematics - 3D Shapes

After finishing a unit on ‘Australian Money’, students are now focusing on 3D shapes. To assist in introducing this unit, we had students make coloured ‘playdough’ using directions in measurement (i.e. 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of water…etc). Students will be exploring and becoming familiar with 3D shapes via their names and features. We intend to have students make a 3D shape out of playdough as it is called out i.e. a pyramid (maybe not a polyhedron though, but we’ll see). Students will later be assessed on identifying prisms, identifying similarities and differences among 3D shapes and either correct labelling or/and memorisation of correct names of 3D shapes.

Our senior QCIA students have been continuing work on their QCIA (Queensland Certificate on Individual Achievement) in areas of personal skills including confidence, persistence and resilience, along with exploring financial literacy, personal care and cooking skills. Students have been setting a personal goal each week and recording how they progress. Communication and social thinking skills have also been a focus this Term. Some of our senior students have enjoyed attending engineering with Mr Kemp and are working well on their projects.

All students have been participating in Zones of Regulation as part of our weekly program and we

have been working on exploring and producing some works of art as a group.

NDIS

Just a reminder for parents of students verified under the Educational Adjustment Program (EAP) at school with a disability that your child may be eligible for support via the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). We highly recommend you contact the NDIS to check your child’s eligibility via the NDIS website: https://www.ndis.gov.au/ The NDIS can provide access to support services for your child including Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Therapy, School Leavers Transition support and Employment support.

With the implementation of NDIS, school based special staff such as Speech-Language Therapist, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Advisory Visiting Teachers for Impairments roles are changing to working with teachers planning and strategies to support a student’s access to the cur-riculum as opposed to assessment leading specified support programs as in the past.

NDIS - What does it mean?

National: The NDIS is available in the North Burnett and nationwide

Disability: The NDIS provides support to eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability. Early intervention supports can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.

Insurance: The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind if they, their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need.

Scheme: The NDIS is not a welfare system. The NDIS is designed to help people get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time.

Find out more via the NDIS website: https://www.ndis.gov.au/ the first step is making an Access Request: you can call 1800 800 110 or you can ask for a form. If you need help filling in the form or making the call, you can contact your Local Area Coordinator, Early Childhood Early Intervention partner or contact your local NDIA office.

YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY COMPLETING THEIR QCE

The QCAA recognises that some students may have disability impairment and/or medical conditions, or experience other circumstances that may be a barrier to their performance in assessment. Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA) are designed to assist these students.

Eligibility for AARA

AARA are provided to minimise, as much as possible, barriers for a student whose disability, impairment, medical condition or other circumstances may affect their ability to read, respond to or participate in assessment

Page 9: Issue 5 Inside the Gate - Burnett State College...2020/03/05  · Inside the Gate Important Dates to Remember stage of the Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance process. This stage

P A G E 9 I N S I D E T H E G A T E

These barriers fall into three broad categories:

permanent temporary intermittent

The QCAA uses broad application categories for AARA eligibility:

cognitive physical sensory social/emotional

The application of AARA to student assessment is based on the functional impact of the condition for which AARA are sought. Students with the same condition may experience highly varied impacts on their education, and their ability to demonstrate their learning, knowledge and skill in assessments.

Students are encouraged to please contact their teacher or Mrs Tanya Coulson Head of Department Senior to discuss the requirement of an AARA and the process to be followed, if applicable.

Further information is available via the QCAA web site https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/aara

Year 9/10 Drama Class activities this week

included warm-up stretching exercises - The

Cobra and Downward Dog.

Warm up was followed by an activity where one

student played the part of the Parent and one

played the part of a 3 year child. With only two

words permitted to be used - Hamburger and

Beetroot - the parent was to convince the child to

eat their vegetables.

A very interesting lesson for everyone involved.

Download the app onto your phone and follow the prompts or alternatively pop into the office for a quick lesson. It really is very easy.

Burnett State College in association with Burnett State College P & C have chosen to adopt the QKR application.

Better for parents

Make faster, more convenient payments from a secure mobile app anywhere and at anytime.

Website payment alternative for parents and carers without a smartphone or tablet.

All purchases including tuckshop , fees, laptops, excursions etc. can be made using the app.

Pay direct from a credit or debit card without pre-loading funds to a third party account.

Track transactions easily with online receipts.

Let’s Concentrate on our Health

The change in the season has already seen a rise in the

amount of illness that is around our school community.

Washing hands regularly and the use of hand sanitizer

is recommended by Qld Health as one of the easiest

ways to stay on top of germs that may be spreading.

If we all make a conscientious effort to follow these

simple instructions and remember to not attend school

if you are unwell we can all play a small part in keeping

our school students and staff as healthy as possible.
