Health Benefits

Boost your brain

Ramadan, is a golden chance for Muslims to get close to Allah through fasting and spiritual deeds. Ramadan, strengthens our connection with Allah. Furthermore, there are many psychological and medical benefits of Fasting. Let us have a look at few of countless blessings of Ramadan Kareem.

No doubt you’ll be aware of the positive effects fasting can have on your mental well-being and spiritual focus, but the brain-boosting powers of Ramadan are even more significant than you might think.A study carried out by scientists found that the mental focus achieved during Ramadan increases the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which causes the body to produce more brain cells, thus improving brain function.

Likewise, a distinct reduction in the amount of the hormone cortisol, produced by the adrenal gland, means that stress levels are greatly reduced both during and after Ramadan.

Because you will be fasting during the day, Ramadan is the perfect time to Eliminate bad habits for good. Vices such as smoking and sugary foods should not be

indulged during Ramadan, and as you abstain from them your body will

gradually acclimatise to their absence, until your vice is kicked for good.

Slight DehydrationThe difference between Ramadan and total fasting is the timing of the food; during Ramadan, we basically miss lunch and take an early breakfast and do not eat until dusk. Abstinence from water for 8 to 10 hours is not necessarily bad for health and in fact, it causes concentration of all fluids within the body, producing slight dehydration.

The body has its own water conservation mechanism; in fact, it has been shown that slight dehydration and water conservation, at least in plant life, improve their longevity.

Several physicians advise patients to skip meals, sometimes for a few days, before prescribing them a controlled diet. Fasting hastens the destruction of the decaying tissues of the body by means of hunger, and then builds new tissues through nutrition. This is why some sci-entists suggest that fasting should be regarded as an effective means of restoring youthfulness and longevity.

Lower cholesterolWe all know that weight loss is one of the possible physical out-comes of fasting during Ramadan, but there’s also a whole host of healthy changes going on behind the scenes. People observing Ramadan enjoy a positive effect on their lipid profile, which means

there is a reduction of cholesterol in the blood. Low cholesterol increases cardiovascular health, greatly

reducing the risk of suffering from heart disease, a heart attack, or a stroke. What’s more, if you follow a healthy diet after Ramadan, this newly lowered cholesterol level should be easy to maintain.

Lasting appeti te reductionThe reduction in food consumed throughout fasting causes your stomach to gradually shrink, meaning you’ll need to eat less food to feel full. If you want to get into the habit of healthy eating then Ramadan is a great time to start. When it’s finished your appetite will be lower than it was before, and you’ll be far less likely to overindulge with your eating.

DetoxifyAs well as being great for spiritually cleansing your-self, Ramadan acts as a fantastic detox for your body. By not eating or drinking throughout the day your body will be offered the rare chance to detoxify your digestive system throughout the month. When your body starts eating into fat reserves to create energy, it will also burn away any harmful toxins that might be present in fat deposits. This body cleanse will leave a healthy blank slate behind, and is the perfect stepping stone to a consistently healthy lifestyle.

Absorb more nutr ientsBy not eating throughout the day during Ramadan you’ll find that your metabolism becomes more efficient, meaning the amount of nutrients you absorb from food improves. This is because of an increase in a hormone called adiponectin, which is produced by a combination of fasting and eating late at night, and allows your muscles to absorb more nutrients. This will lead to health benefits all around the body, as various areas are able to better absorb and make use of the nutrients they need to function.

Extended Life Expectancy

The most scientifically proven advantage to fasting is the feeling of rejuvenation and extended life expectancy. A slower metabolic rate, more efficient protein production, an improved immune system, and the increased production of hormones contributes to this long-term

benefit of fasting. In addition to the Human Growth Hormone that is released more frequently during a fast, an anti-aging hormone is also

produced more efficiently. "The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition."

Moderaion is MustFasting should have its regulations too, and not simply the in orderly skipping meals, that is bound to harm health and stamina, rather than improving them. Here again Islam provides the answer, and in order to realize the benefits of fasting, it recommends the late midnight meals call (before the formal start of a fast) and the breaking of the fast at the time prescribed. Of course, to ensure good health one should abstain from gluttony after breaking fast. In the holy Quran, there is a Verse gathering the whole matter of medicine. It is: "...Eat and drink but do not be excessive."

Treatment of DiabetesRamadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for the treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity, and essential hypertension. There is a reduction in core body temperature. This is a direct result of the slower metabolic rate and general bodily functions. Following a drop in blood sugar level and using the reserves of glucose found in liver glycogen.Hence, during fast body uses the glucose stored up in the liver glycogen and reduces the sugar level in the body. This is a very effective and natural treatment method for people suffering from diabetes.

Muslims all over the world fast from dawn to dusk for the entire month of Ramadan as ordained in the Qur’an. Research and studies across the world have proved the medical significance and importance of fasting.

It is generally stated that Islamic fasting causes no adverse medical effects. The calorie intake of Muslims during Ramadan is at or slightly below the nutritional requirement guidelines, so there is no possibility of malnutrition. Several studies have shown that fasting helps decrease cholesterol levels in the blood and prevents hypertension. A reduction in fat in the blood helps reduce gallstones as well.

Madeleine Beth McCann (born 12 May 2003) disappeared on the evening of Thursday, 3 May 2007, from her bed in an apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. She was on holiday there from the UK with her parents, twin siblings and a group of family friends and their children.

The disappearance became what the Daily Telegraph called "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history." Her whereabouts remain unknown.

FINDING

maddy

Thursday, 3 May,2007 was the penultimate day of the family's holiday. The chil-dren spent the morning in the resort's Kids' Club while the parents went for a walk, then the family lunched together at their apartment before heading to the pool.

Madeleine's mother took the last known photograph of Madeleine by the pool that afternoon, sitting next to her father and two-year-old sister. The children returned to Kids' Club, and at 6:00 their mother took them back to the apartment while their father went for a tennis lesson.

CRIMES THAT SHOOK THE WORLD

The McCanns were declared suspects in September 2007, but were cleared in July 2008 when Portugal's attorney-general closed the case.

The parents continued the investigation using private detectives, but after the intervention of the British Home Secretary in May 2011 Scotland Yard set up a new inquiry, Operation Grange. The Portuguese police reopened their own investigation in October 2013, though there appeared to be little collaboration between the police forces.

That month Scotland Yard released e-fit images of men they wanted to trace, including one of a man seen carrying a child toward the beach that night.

The McCanns were subjected to intense scrutiny and false allegations of involvement in their daughter's death, particularly in the tabloid press and on Twitter, which was just a year old when Madeleine went missing. They were awarded damages in 2008 against the Express Group and front-page apologies from its newspapers. In 2011 they testified before the Leve-son Inquiry into British press misconduct, lending support to those arguing for tighter press regula-tion in the UK.

Page 16: ISSUE #5

The parents left the apartment at 8:30 to dine with their friends in the Ocean Club's open-air tapas restaurant, 50 metres (160 ft) as the crow flies on the other side of the pool, a walk of 30–45 seconds, according to Madeleine's mother.

The message said the group's children were asleep in the apartments, and the staff book was left at the swimming-pool reception area. Madeleine's mother believes that the abductor may have seen the note.

The McCanns and their friends left the table throughout the evening to check on their children. The McCanns' patio doors could only be locked from the inside, so they had left them closed but unlocked to allow them to enter that way. Madeleine's father carried out the first check on 5A at around 9:05. All was well, except that he recalled having left the children's bedroom door only slightly ajar and now it stood almost wide open; he said he pulled it back to a five-degree position before returning to the restaurant.

The staff at the tapas restaurant had left a note in a staff message book asking that the same table, which overlooked the apartments, be block-booked for 8:30 for the McCanns and their friends for several evenings during their holiday.

CRIMES THAT SHOOK THE WORLD

Page 17: ISSUE #5

Madeleine's mother had intended to check on the children at 9:30, but Matthew Oldfield, one of the Tapas Seven, offered to do it when he checked on his own children in the apartment next door. He noticed that the McCanns' bedroom door was wide open, but after hearing no noise he left their apartment without looking far enough into the room to see whether Madeleine was in bed.

He could not recall whether the bedroom window and its exterior shutter were open at that point. Early on in the investigation the Portuguese police accused Oldfield of involvement because he had volunteered to do the check, suggesting to him that he had handed Madeleine to someone through the bedroom window.

Kate made her own check at around 10:00. Scotland Yard said in 2013 that Madeleine was prob-ably taken just moments before this. Kate recalled entering the apartment through the patio doors at the back, and noticed that the children's bedroom door was wide open. When she tried to close the door it slammed shut as though there was a draught, which is when she found that the bedroom window and its shutter were open.

Madeleine's Cuddle Cat and pink blanket were still on the bed, but Madeleine was gone. After briefly searching the apartment Kate ran back towards the restaurant, scream-ing that someone had taken Madeleine.

At around 10:10 Madeleine's father sent Mat-thew Oldfield to ask the resort's reception desk to call the police, and at 10:30 the resort activated its missing-child search protocol.

Sixty staff and guests searched until 04:30, at first assuming that Madeleine had wandered off. One of them told Channel 4's Dispatches that from one end of Luz to the other, you could hear people shouting her name.

BLACK & WHITEkaftan goes

The look was popularized in fashion spreads and celebri-ties, including British model and actress Jacqueline Bisset, here in 1968.

Barbara Bach, a beautiful and statesque former model from New York, wore a floor-length sheer

kaftan over a long black dress that was very Seventies, but not particularly sexy of

flattering, hiding her lovely figure.

So this is where Tamara Mellon, boss of Jimmy Choo and Halston, gets her fashion ideas from.Jane's kaftan was a little shapeless and all-concealing for a Bond girl, but as a Seventies fashion plate, complete with centre-parted hair, she was spot on.

Elizabeth Taylor owned the name “caftan chic” in the 1970s as her look transitioned from "Hollywood formality" to New Age Fashion. Her vast couture collection included dramatic caftans made for her from antique Middle Eastern fabrics. She reportedly wore a

tie-dyed caftan in 1975 for her second wedding.

Your heart sustains you, providing life-giving oxygen and nutrients via your bloodstream to all parts of your body. So, what have you done for your heart lately? Here, we offer natural strategies for boosting heart health and improving your overall wellness.

Healthy Heart Habits

Connect with friends and loved onesBetween work, family and friends, it’s tough to squeeze everything you need to do into a measly 24-hour day.Studies show that even minor deprivation can cause an inflammatory effect in the body. This autoimmune response throws all of your major systems (digestive, cardiovascular and central nervous) out of whack and can set the stage for several diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and depres-sion. To maintain balance, you really do need to log seven to nine hours each night, says Mark Liponis, M.D., medical director of Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Lenox, Mass.

There are certain foods that are heart protective because they contain omega-3s and other healthy fats, critical vitamins and minerals, and fiber and phytonutrients that help keep heart tissues healthy. Here's a partial list of foods you should eat more of: salmon, ground flaxseed, oatmeal, black or pinto beans, raw almonds and walnuts, and brown rice. Among the many heart-healthy fresh fruits and vegetables, these are especially beneficial: orange vegetables, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, asparagus, citrus and blueberries.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that getting too little or too much sleep is bad for the heart, increasing your risk for heart disease. However, there's another good reason to work on getting the right amount of sleep: Sleep washes away any negatives from the day before and helps you feel charged up and ready to go for the next day. It's really true that trou-bles always seem easier to deal with after a good night's sleep!

Eat more heart-healthy foods

Get 6-8 hours of sleep

To high-tech modern ears, it may seem silly to laugh your problems away. But scientists have found ample evidence for the health benefits of lightheartedness and optimism for healing and fighting off illness. Seeking happiness-producing activities is a good way to relieve stress and boost your mood—and heart health. Give it a try this month. It will do your heart good.

Stress is bad for the heart. At least once a day, if you can, head outdoors to breathe deeply and connect with nature. Doing anything outside, whether it's taking a hike or sitting in the park, significantly reduces stress hormones and lowers your blood pressure, which benefits your heart—and your mood.

We often believe that exercising more and faster is better. Not so. New research from the National Institutes of Health has found that lower-intensity exercise (staying just below your target heart rate) is healthier than exercise that's high stress and high intensity. Research found that athletes who overdo it can develop scarring of the heart over time

Extreme weather can take its toll on you car, making it difficult to get it started on cold mornings and overheating on the hottest days.Summer throws heat, dust, and traffic tie-ups your way, increasing the likeli-hood that you will face a breakdown. The following preventive maintenance tips can keep your car running smoothly throughout the next heat wave.

An old battery may not survive the summer. If your car's battery is near the end of its useful life, then replace it. Older batteries simply cannot provide a full charge and won't be able to handle the heavy electric demands placed on it by your climate control system.Newer batteries can also fail if there is a build up of corrosion.

Most drivers wil l change their oil twice annually or at least as often as the intervals outlined in their owner's manual. Timing your oil changes to take place before extreme temperatures kick in is a sensible approach to preventive maintenance. Your owner's manual will list the right oil grade for your car. You will notice some differences in viscosity between winter and summer oils, the latter permitting a slightly thicker oil. Where 5W30 oil may be needed in the winter, 10W30 oil may be ideal for the summer. Change your oil fluids at this time and do the same for your brake, power steering, and transmission fluids.

Change Car Fluids

Examine Belts and Hoses

A broken belt or a cracked hose can leave you stranded. Visible signs of cracking, fraying, and bulging are among the warnings telling you that something needs to be replaced. For belts, you can check for tightness when the engine is turned off. For hoses, particularly the vacuum hose, you will want to examine it when the car is running. Lift and secure the hood, and listen for a hissing noise.

FOR A LONG

Avoid any moving parts by carefully moving your hand across the surface of the hose to discover its leak. Your fingers will be pulled against the hose if a leak is apparent and the car's idle may change as you cover the hole. Replace as needed.

Your climate control system cools your car's cabin. Your coolant system keeps your engine running smoothly, sending cooling fluids through the engine block to prevent overheating. If you had your coolant replaced within the past year, you can top off a cooled down radiator with a 50:50 mixture of coolant and water.

Take Note of Rubber

Excessive heat causes rubber to lose its elasticity, wearing out your wiper blades faster. You want a good pair of blades in place for your summer drive and replac-ing them with silicone rubber provides improved visibility and durability.Your tires are also made from rubber and are subject to aging as well as wear and tear.Excessive heat can magnify tire problems causing tires to flex more. Cracks, rot or other problems can quickly lead to tire failure.

Keep your tires inflated to the proper level, rotate them every 6,000 miles, and re-place your worn out rubber. As summer's heat settles in, your car should be ready to handle the worst weather conditions. Ensure that your headlights, turn signal lights, and tail lights are in working order too, replacing burnt out bulbs as needed.

Protesters rally outside McDonald's corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill . , on Wednesday to demand higher wages for workers. Which is why a number of companies have begun experimenting with new technology that could significantly reduce the number of restaurant workers in the years to come. It takes time to introduce new technology and human interaction has always been a major component of the hospitality business. The software and machines will play an increased role in our dining experiences going forward. A food processing company in Spain now uses robots to inspect heads of lettuce on a conveyor belt, throwing out those that don't meet companstan-dards, the Oxford researchers report.

Panera Bread (PNRA) is the latest chain to introduce automated service, announcing last month that it plans to bring self-service ordering kiosks as well

as a mobile ordering option to all its locations within the next three years. The news follows moves from Chili's and Applebee's to place tablets on their tables,

allowing diners to order and pay without interacting with human wait staff at all. Delivery drivers could be replaced en masse by self-driving cars, which are likely

to hit the market within a decade or two. In food preparation, there are start-ups offering robots for bartending and gourmet hamburger preparation.

ROBOTS WILL REPLACE fast-food WORKERS.

The new device is likely to feature an OLED screen, numerous cameras positioned towards the player's face and a wireless connection to the device powering it, according to Engadget. The most probable purpose for the headset would be to enhance mobile gaming, though it could also be used for immersive experience videos.

Samsung is reportedly developing a virtual reality headset to be used in conjunction with its mobiles. Samsung is said to be working on a new virtual reality headset set to be announced later this year. Working models of the headset are reportedly powered by existing Samsung devices, including the flagship Galaxy S5. A consumer version is likely to run off more powerful, yet--to-be-released devices. A virtual headset would put Samsung in direct competition with the likes of Facebook's recent acquisition Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus.

The Advanced Technology and Projects group behind Project Tango unveiled a prototype of a smartphone earlier this year, Google said at the time that possible future uses for the technology include capturing the dimensions of your home, navigating inside unfamiliar buildings and finding products unaided in large supermarkets.

Google is reportedly developing a tablet capable of capturing images in three dimensions, as part of its 'Project Tango' - an exploration into giving mobile

devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion. The 7-inch tablet will feature two back cameras and infrared depth sensors, as well as advanced

software that can render 3D images and is planning to produce about 4,000 of the prototype tablets from next month.

By 2017, the tablet is expected to become a mass-market device.

Drones with advanced sensors and imaging capabilities are giving farmers new ways to increase yields and reduce crop damage. It provide farmers with three types of detailed views. First, seeing a crop from the air can reveal patterns that expose everything from irrigation problems to soil variation and even pest and fungal infestations that aren’t apparent at eye level. Second, airborne cameras can take multispectral images, capturing data from the infrared as well as the visual spectrum, which can be combined to create a view of the crop that highlights differences between healthy and distressed plants in a way that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

AGRICULTURE DRONES.

Finally, a drone can survey a crop every week, every day, or even every hour. Combined to create a time-series animation, that imagery can show chang-es in the crop, revealing trouble spots or opportuni-ties for better crop management.More and better data can reduce water use and lower the chemical load in our environment and our food. Seen this way, what started as a military technology may end up better known as a green-tech tool, and our kids will grow up used to flying robots buzzing over farms like tiny crop dusters.

Since the 18th century, during the days of the Incon-fidência Mineira - an independence conspiracy against the domination of the Portuguese crown - the state of Minas Gerais gambled with the idea of instating a new capital to replace Ouro Preto. One of the most historic venues in Brazilian football and called home by Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro, the 57,483 capacity Estadio Mineirao is set to undergo a complete overhaul prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.

1.Belo Horizonte

The construction of this ultra-modern city, situated in the centre of Brazil, began in 1956. Since its official foundation on 21 April 1960, the city has served the purpose for which it was built: to replace Rio de Janeiro as the country's capital. As a result, the bulk of Brazil's federal administration and politi-cal power are centred here.In keeping with one of the country’s most architec-turally advanced cities, Brasilia’s 68,009-capacity Estadio Nacional is an imposing sight and the second largest venue at Brazil 2014.

2.Brasilia

The capital of the state of Mato Grosso, Cuiaba is located in the exact geographic centre of South America, an equidistant 2,000 km from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.Sustainability has been the major consideration for the new stadium in Cuiaba, as those visiting the 42,968-seater arena will be able to enjoy the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in naturally rich surroundings.

The city of Curitiba is one of the finest examples of a bulky economic and industrial development carried out with responsibility and organisation.Ever since renovation works were completed in June 1999, the historic Estadio Joaquim Americo – better known as the Arena da Baixada – has been consid-ered one of Brazil’s most modern and best-appointed stadiums.

Although it was officially founded as a village in 1726, and would only become the capital of Ceará in 1799, Fortaleza (Portuguese for ‘fortress') owes its name to the period between 1637 to 1654, when it was controlled by the Dutch, who built the Schoonenborch Fort. Thanks to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, the main football stadium in the city of Fortaleza, home to both Ceara and Fortaleza, will be entirely refur-bished.

The very location of the city of Manaus is one of its most remarkable attractions: the confluence of the rivers Negro (Black) and Solimões (how the Amazon River is known in this part of Brazil). While not one of the traditional hotbeds of Brazilian football, Manaus is sure to prove a major attraction at Brazil 2014 thanks to the Arena Amazonia's unique position at the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

From the subtropical climate to the cultural habits, Porto Alegre is fairly different from the other state capitals in Brazil.

Built in a picture-postcard setting on the banks of the River Guaiba, the Beira-Rio is home to Porto Alegre’s Internacional, who share a fierce rivalry with city foes Gremio.

On 25 December 1597, back when Brazil was a colony of the Portuguese crown, a group of Portu-guese officials reached the Potengi River with the duty of reclaiming the captaincy of Rio Grande do Norte, which was then dominated by French bucca-neers.Porto Alegre, the capital city of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, boasts stunning scenes from nature such as the sunset over Lake Guaíba, one of the most beautiful in the world.

On 1 January 1502, the Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos brought his ship into a bay on the Brazil-ian coast, which is now called Guanabara Bay. Mis-takenly confusing the bay with the mouth of a river, he named it Rio de Janeiro - literally translated as the January River.Built for the 1950 FIFA World Cup Brazil, and the setting for that year’s unforgettable decider between the hosts and Uruguay, the Maracana is set to play a starring role again at Brazil 2014.

The financial and business hub of Brazil, not only is Sao Paulo the biggest city in the country, it also ranks among the most populous in the world, with just over 11 million inhabitants within its area of 1,523 square kilometers (588 sq mi).Of the three biggest clubs in Sao Paulo, the only one which previously did not own a stadium with the nec-essary size and infrastructure to host games was the city’s best-supported side: Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.

When the Portuguese crown first decided to carry out the endeavour of colonising Brazil, the first urban area to be settled in was Salvador, which was established on 29 March 1549Brazil’s first capital city, Salvador will play host to six matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, with a new 52,048-capacity stadium being built for the occasion.

Failaka Island is among the major tourist attractions in Kuwait, and is linked to Kuwait City through submarine pipeline that supplies water to inhabitants of Failaka. Failaka is a magnificent island that easily blends ancient history of Kuwait with gleaming modernity.

The Greeks are said to have lived in this island and set up localities. The archeological remains of the past, in the form of coins, temples and seals are still found here, which could be a treasure trove for history buffs.
