the 2011 event guideIt’s our biggest annual calendar yet!

Welcome to our biggest event guide ever! We have approximately 700 running and multi-sport events on this year’s calendar. Five kilometers is the most popular distance for runners and walkers in Colorado, but you’ll find many other interesting and unusual events to capture your attention as well, from multi-day stage races to short one milers. There are more events competing for your consideration than ever before, not just in Colorado, but across the nation. According to Running USA, a nonprofit organization representing the running industry, U.S. road running finishers have grown from 7,502,000 to 10,290,000 in the past decade. That’s a 37 percent increase. In 2009, event finisher totals exceeded the 10 million mark for the first time.

As I was typing this year’s calendar into the magazine, I personally was surprised at the increase in the number of marathons in Colorado. There are now 25 marathons, including four newcomers for 2011 with the introduction of the Moutaineer Marathon (Lake City), Arkansas Bluegrass Marathon (Salida), Aspen Back Country Marathon (Aspen) and

the Autumn Color Marathon (Buena Vista). A marathon is always a rigorous undertaking, but Colorado race directors seem intent to really challenge participants with so many events taking place in the mountains, adding the additional challenge of altitude and extreme inclines to the mix.

Across the nation, marathoning continues to grow. The most recent statistics released by the website MarathonGuide.com reveal that there was a 9.9% growth rate in the number of marathon finishers from 2008 to 2009. In total, the website reports that nearly 468,000 marathon finishing times were recorded in the USA among 397 marathons.

I recently was given the opportunity to run the USA Half Marathon Championships in Houston, Texas in January. I lined up among some of the nation’s fastest runners, such as Ryan Hall and Jen Rhines. (Of course, I only saw their backs after the gun went off since I finished a good 30 minutes after the top runners!) Many elites were on hand from Colorado to perform a dress rehearsal for what will be next year’s U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials course. The course will be spectator friendly, but not a quick course for the athletes, with rolling hills and sharp turns. Ryan Hall set an American record on the Aramco Houston Half Marathon course in 2007 with a blazing 59:43, so the spectators in Houston had high expectations for how fast the runners should finish. I heard many spectators say they were disappointed that the course seemed so slow. The race officials say they designed the course to mimic the Olympic Marathon route in London. I think the benefit will be that running fans will get to see their favorite runners pass by several times before the finish.

Happy trails!Derek

The first Olympic Trials were held in 1968 in Alamosa, Colorado. George Young ran 2:30:49 to win the race, his marathon debut. The mara-thon was held at altitude to prepare for the Mexico City Olympics. The 2012 Olympic Team Trials Marathon in Houston will be the men’s 12th Trials. As of February 12, 2011, there are 102 men and 135 women who have qualified for the Trials.

Fun Facts

vaughn, Flanagan win usa cross country titles

olympic bronze medalist shalane flanagan dominated the women’s field to win her fifth usa cross country crown, while Brent Vaughn of Black hawk sur-prised the men’s field to win his first usa title on february 5 at the 2011 usa cross country championships on a beautiful winter day in southern california. In addition to the national titles up for grabs in san Diego, open and Junior men and women qualified to represent team usa at the Iaaf World cross country championships march 20 in Punta umbria, spain. In the women’s race, flanagan cruised to a 44-second win in 25 minutes, 47 seconds to defend her title. “as soon as I finished, I looked around to see who was finishing behind me. I’m really excited about this squad, and I hope that these ladies will commit to going to spain,” flanagan said. In the men’s 12K, a large pack ran together through 6K before Vaughn made his move, opening a nine-second lead over a chase pack. Going into the final lap, Vaughn, 26, looked to have the win secured but waited until the final meters to celebrate his six second win, finishing in 35:46. “It’s gonna be great to put on that usa jersey. I’m gonna have a hard time sleeping tonight (after dropping out of the usa half marathon last week). I didn’t want to waste this opportunity. I’ve been working too hard to waste my fitness. I was planning to give ryan hall a run for his money, but that didn’t happen. I was so

disappointed after Dnfing last week that I thought about quitting and getting a job,” voiced Vaughn. In the Junior men’s 8K race, ryan Poland of Westminster was fifth in 25:16. In the masters race, colleen De reuck of Boulder took the women’s title in 28:47. In the age graded race, Boulder’s Daniel King, 51, was fifth in 28:06, while edie stevenson, 61, also of Boulder fin-ished fifth female in 36:01.

Braun, now a resident of flagstaff, aZ, led mcmillan elite as they placed three runners in the top-ten, scoring 29 points for a 30 point win over three-time team titlist hansons-Brooks Distance Project. more than 1,100 athletes com-peted in the event, which was held on December 11. the championships offered a total prize purse of $30,000.

Bolder Boulder 10K changes course

the Bolder Boulder is making the first significant course change since mov-ing the finish line to folsom field in 1981. the 2011 edition of the Bolder Boulder will begin at a site just north of 30th street and Walnut street. the location is about a mile south of the previous start line. there will also be slight modifications throughout the first two kilometers of the 10K race. “this change should make it easier for participants to get to the race,” race Director cliff Bosley said, adding that there will be separate drop-off zones for

people in cars and buses. “hopefully it will ease congestion on streets in and around the start area.”

Boulder’s Kennard third at usa half Marathon champs

mo trafeh and Jen rhines won usa half marathon titles in houston, texas on January 29, running 1:02:17 and 1:11:14 respectively. the national championship drew some of the best distance runners in the nation. from colorado, nan Kennard of Boulder won bronze in the women’s event in 1:12:03, which won her $4,000, while tera moody of colorado springs placed fifth in 1:12:30. sure,” said Goucher. In the days before the race, it was uncertain if Goucher would even be able to make it to the start line in arizona. she spent sleepless nights in a Portland hospital earlier in the week with her 16-week-old son, colt, who needed fluid drained from an abscess on his jaw caused by an infection. the emergency impacted not only the final training for her first race since the 2009 World championships marathon, but delayed her travel plans as well. “overall, it was nice to be back out there. Last night [saturday] I forgot to do a lot of things I used to do by second nature,” she added. “It was overwhelming.

It was a hectic week. I didn’t get much sleep, not much rest.” Josh cox, 35, won his second consecutive rock ‘n’ roll marathon in 2:17:32 and then continued on to the arizo-na state university track where he crushed his u.s. record for 50 kilometers by more than 3½ minutes, but just missed the world mark by 7 seconds. he completed the 50K (31.05 miles) with an official time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 45 seconds.

Mackey wins 100K

Boulder’s Dave mackey won the Bandera endurance trail run 100K in Bandera, texas on January 9. finishing in 9

hours and 16 minutes, mackey crushed the course record by a full hour and won the usatf 100K national trail championship in the process.

Meet Heather Utrataby Connilee Walter

At Denver races, especially if it’s a marathon, you might hear cheers of ‘Go, Heather, go’; possibly, they are encouraging Heather Utrata, a 28-year-old member of the Runner’s Roost running team and ambitious runner and marathoner. Utrata began running to ‘restore balance to her life’ after a wild freshman year at CSU. In 2011, balance includes working as a front counter supervisor at the Englewood Recreation Center, enjoying time with Mars (her pet cat) and eyeing a berth in the 2012 Olympic Trials.

You won your first marathon, the 2009 Colfax Marathon. What was that experience like? It was unforgettable! I remember when the lead bike came up to me and told me I was in the lead and then a full 30 minutes later I was like “Oh! You mean I’m winning? Right now?” It was just so unbelievable because I went through my training thinking that someday my goal would be to win a marathon, but then it was happening right that very second! It was such a perfect experience and an extremely motivating way to start marathoning.

How long have you been a runner, and what inspired you to try a marathon? I’ve been running for about 9 years now. I started after my freshman year at CSU very recreationally and then it kind of snowballed from there. But at first it was very much a solo and non-competitive endeavor. Then, at the first Colfax Marathon, some ladies from work put together a relay team. It was my very first race ever and I had the first 10K. I had never expe-rienced the feel at the start of a race before and I was so struck by all of the energy and emo-tion there, and was really jealous that a lot of the people there were about to do something really amazing. It took me another year or two to do another race of any sort but I still kept that moment in my head and thought how exciting it would be to stand at the start waiting to run a full marathon. I waited a really long time until I actually did go for a full marathon, but it was well worth it.

What is your typical training/running week like? If I’m not training for anything, I really just do whatever I feel like doing. Usually I’ll have a few days where I’ll get in two short and easy runs, one day that I’ll get in a good fast run, a couple 7-10 mile runs, and then one day that I just zone out on the elliptical. If I am training it looks more like; Sunday: Long run or race; Monday: Two 4 to 6 mile recovery runs; Tuesday: Medium long run and strength training; Wednesday: Really easy 3 to 5 mile run in the morning, fast 6 to 8 miles in the evening; Thursday: Long run; Friday: 8 miles in the morning, 5 miles or 45 minutes on the elliptical and strength training in the evening; Saturday: hour of elliptical.

Personal bests: 5K - 18:38; 10K - 37:59; 10 mile - 1:03:24; marathon - 2:54:25Read more at www.coloradorunnermag.com.

VASQUE GOLDEN LEAF HALF MARATHON EVENT GUIDE ‘11

www.goldenleafhalfmarathon.comSatUrdaY, SePtemBer 24 - aSPen, co

Chosen by Colorado Runner as 2008’s “Best Half Marathon,” the Golden Leaf is one of the most beautiful foot races in the Rockies. This 13.3 mile half marathon traverses from Snowmass Village to the heart of Aspen on mountain trails and roads, at the height of Colorado’s breathtaking fall colors. Unlike the many fast and flat half marathons on city streets, the Golden Leaf will challenge even the toughest of half marathon competitors with its rocky mountain trails.

Join the Herd! Run alongside the roaring Elk River through the emerald green pastures on Country Road 129 with the snow-capped Rocky Mountains all around and find out why the Steamboat Marathon was ranked as one of the “Top 10 Destination Marathons in North America.” Runners from all over the country look forward to the Steamboat Marathon because it is still a relatively small race with a hometown feel and it’s a race where every runner counts.

LEADVILLE TRAIL 100 EVENT GUIDE ‘11

WWW.LEADVILLETRAIL100.COMSATURDAY, AUGUST 20 - LEADVILLE, CO

The Leadville Trail 100 is known as the “Race Across The Sky” and might be the most famous 100 mile race in the United States. Starting and finishing in downtown Leadville at an elevation of 10,300’, the out and back course travels over the infamous 12,600’ Hope Pass on its way to the ghost town of Winfield. The LT100 committee also stages a training camp, a 50 mile event, a marathon, a 15 mile race and a 10K at different times of the year to help runners prepare for the rigors of this high altitude challenge.

SHIPROCK MARATHON & HALF MARATHON EVENT GUIDE ‘11

WWW.SHIPROCKMARATHON.COMSATuRdAy, MAy 7 - SHIPROCK, NM

The Shiprock Marathon & Relays are the only events of their kind on the Navajo Nation. This year marks the 28th annual version of the community runs. Events include: Marathon (USATF certified), 5-person Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and non-competitive 10K Trail Walk. Since its humble beginning in the early ‘80s these races have attracted runners from all over the world. Every year, many Navajo return to run in this high desert classic. It has become a new Navajo tradition.

Question: How many food deci-sions does the average person make in a day: 25, 80, 100, 200? According to Bon-nie Taub-Dix RD, weight loss specialist in New York and author of Read it Before You Eat It: How to Decode Food Labels and Make the Healthiest Choice Every Time, the answer is 200 food decisions a day. No wonder grocery shopping can be mind-boggling and a source of overwhelming confusion! Time and again, runners wistfully comment, “Nancy, I wish I could take you food shopping with me.” They are confused about which foods to buy so they can eat health-fully. They wonder if they should buy organic or standard foods? Fresh or frozen vegetables?

Low-fat or fat-free milk? Their list of questions seems endless. While I can answer their ques-tions about food shopping, Taub-Dix’s newly released book can guide everyone through the grocery store. Read it Before You Eat It is a handy resource for all hungry runners. Here are just a few tidbits that I gleaned from this easy-reader.

• Supermarkets are set up in the way they want you to shop, which means lots of unplanned purchases. That’s why loaves of freshly baked bread or pretty flowers greet you as you enter the store. Be sure you have a plan (and your guard up) when you enter! Sixty to seventy per-cent of what ends up in a shopping cart tends to be unplanned.

• Beware of descriptive labels such as freshly baked, homemade, natural, and wholesome.

These words make products appear more at-tractive so they jump into your food cart. The same holds true with menus: Succulent Italian Seafood Fillet sells more than Fish of the Day.

• Don’t be tempted by “fat-free.” When food manufacturers take out the fat, they generally add extra sugar. You’ll end up with a similar amount of calories, and sometimes even more. A smaller portion of the “real food” can create a better taste-memory than a larger portion of a substitute that is low in taste.

• Your goal should not be to eliminate dietary fat; you need some fat to absorb certain vita-mins, provide fuel for endurance exercise, and contribute a nice taste and texture to foods. Rather, strive to enjoy more mono- and poly-unsaturated fats, while staying away from trans fats, listed on the label as “partially hydrogenat-ed oils.” Even if the label says “0 grams trans fat,” it might contain <0.5 gram, so the better bet is to read the ingredient list on the label and nix foods with “partially hydrogenated oils.”

• The “serving size” listed on a food label may not be the appropriate portion for your body. Most runners need at least two servings of cereal to create the foundation for an adequate breakfast. That is, you are not being piggy if you eat two packets (two servings) of oatmeal. You might even need three…

• The recommended fiber intake is about 25 to 35 grams per day. Most people fail to reach that goal. Yet, some health-conscious runners consume far more fiber than that — and com-plain about undesired pit stops during exercise. Moderation tends to be a wise path.

• Not all foods have labels with protein infor-mation. Case in point: deli-meats. That makes it hard to count grams of protein. The alterna-tive is to use weight. An ounce of cooked meat, such as deli roast beef or turkey breast, has about 7 grams of protein. If you use 4 ounces sliced turkey in a sandwich, you will consume about 28 grams of protein. That’s about half the daily protein needs of a 120-pound female run-ner, and about one-third of the amount needed

If you want to lose weight, try to make sleep a priority. A survey of 772 college students suggests those who slept less than seven hours a night had a significantly higher Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who slept more than seven hours. Another sleep-related study with healthy adults suggests sleep deprivation is associated with in-creased hunger and the potential to overeat.

• Fresh produce may not have a label, but it will have a “Country of Origin” sticker. If you start reading the little stickers, you’ll notice that grapes might come from Chile, the bananas from Ecuador, the peppers from Canada. The United Nations of food has gathered in your market’s produce stand! While world-wide imports offer us more variety, they also contrib-ute to a significant carbon footprint. Buying locally grown produce is a nice way to support your local farmers and protect the neighboring farmlands.

• Concerned about that long list of food additives that you cannot pronounce? Food additives are carefully regulated and subject to ongoing safety reviews. The consumer advocate group Center for Science in the Public Interest suggests we “avoid sodium nitrate, saccharin, caffeine, olestra, acesulfame-K, and artificial coloring” not only because they are question-able additives but also because they are used primarily in processed foods with low nutri-tional value. You won’t go wrong eating more unprocessed or lightly processed foods (such as oatmeal instead of Fruit Loops).

• “Best if used by” dates are related to freshness and best quality, not safety. Eating the food after that expiration date won’t hurt you but there might be some loss of flavor or quality. Canned tomatoes, pineapple and other high-acid foods can last for 12 to 18 months on the shelf. Canned meat, fish, poultry, vegetables and low acid foods can last for two to five years if the can has been stored in a cool, dry place. Yet, “when in doubt, throw it out.”

• What exactly does “organic” mean on a food label? The official international definition is: “Organic foods have been produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fun-gicides, or synthetic fertilizers, and cannot be genetically modified or radiated. Organic poul-try, dairy, meat, and eggs are produced without the use of growth hormones or antibiotics, and are humanely raised and slaughtered.” This definition may not reflect the nutrition-al value of a food; in some cases organic food is not nutritionally superior to standard food. And take note: organic chips are still chips that are loaded with fat, sodium, and calories! Or-ganic also doesn’t mean that the food is locally grown. Does organic food flown here from China really benefit the environment?

Yikes ... I’ve read to page 55 and have run out of space. Guess you’ll have to read the remaining 200 pages of Read It Before You Eat It to learn more about the whats and whys of food shopping so you can make food decisions based on facts, not fear.

erin hooker of ft. collins (415) alongside sarah fakler of Xavier h.s., phoeniX (1062) and eventual Winner julia foster (5) of alBuquerque academy at ntn regionals.

There are two national meet “tracks:” Foot Locker and Nike. The former emphasizes individual competition, the latter focuses on team rivalry. Foot Locker entrants venture to the frozen tundra of Kenosha, Wisconsin on Thanksgiving weekend to vie against star runners in a gargantuan region stretching from Colorado to Ohio for one of 10 spots in the finals in San Diego. Columbine’s Will Kincaid is a relative newcomer to the sport, which is why he possibly didn’t receive a lot of pre-race credit, despite dominating the Colorado 5A boys ranks this year, including the state title. But Kincaid sped to a fourth-place finish to punch his ticket to the Golden State. Kelsey Lakowske of Boulder and Eleanor Fulton of Highlands Ranch also advanced to the finals with 5th- and 7th-place finishes, respectively. “It was cold, frigid, but a neat course, really hilly, kind of fun,” said Fulton, who said she was confident in her ability to run well and qualify for nationals. Foot locKer nationals Most running pundits safely picked Illinois’ Lucas Verzbicas to repeat as Foot Locker champ, and he didn’t disappoint, winning handily in 14:59. In an incredibly tight pack, Kincaid finished 11th in 15:27, just five seconds out of fifth-place. Prohibitive girls’ pre-race favorite, Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, predictably crushed the elite field by 34 seconds in 16:53, the fifth-fastest time in race history. But in this case, a Colorado runner figured in the finish line drama. Lakowske, ninth the previous year, had a thrilling duel with Julie Nacouzi of Santa Rosa, Calif., both finishing in 17:29, with race officials initially awarding

third-place to Lakowske. The Boulder senior got all the way onto the podium before officials reversed their decision, and instructed Lakowske to cede the bronze medal to Nacouzi. “I was disappointed at the time, because it made it hard to cel-ebrate being fourth even though I had a performance I should be proud of,” said Lakowske. “But I’ve been on the other end of a close call and had it fall in my favor – it’s only a number. I had friends and family that were there to celebrate my race, not my place, and that’s what I remem-ber more than where I stood on the podium.” The Boulder senior had a remarkable story even getting to race this year, much less reach a lofty placing at nationals. Surgery to remove bone chips from her patellar tendon forced Lakowske to miss the entire spring track season, and she only took to cross country training midway into the season, rebounding with a stirring win at State. “I’m pleased,” she said. “I wanted to fight for the (national) title this year, but I don’t think it was feasible with the short season I had. It was hard for me to put things into perspective until Nationals, and I have to remind myself to be grateful for the opportunity to even compete, which had been out of the question not too long ago.” For Lakowske, this was her second trip to Foot Locker nation-als, but the “red carpet” feeling doesn’t get old. “All the perks are great – they provide each athlete with just about everything you need for a running wardrobe, including spikes. The food is amazing, the hotel (Del Coronado) is gorgeous – but the people you meet are definitely the most memorable. They bring past Foot Locker qualifiers – some like Meb (Keflezighi) and Suzy Favor-Hamilton, who are enormously success-

Local Youth Compete on National SceneIn the pantheon of high school sports, cross country stands alone in having true head-to-head national championships, and not just one of them, but two. furthermore, colorado athletes and schools are rarely mentioned in the national title picture for the “esPn” sports like football and basketball. however, in cross country, the centennial state boasts a long line of standout names on the usa scene, including Goucher and fairchild. While in 2010, colorado runners didn’t necessarily break into that lofty echelon, it was still a notable season. – By BIll stahl

ful in their post-collegiate years. Shalane (Flanagan) was there this year, too. It definitely adds to that elite feeling associated with the event – it’s inspiring and moti-vational. Meeting other young runners from all over the country is pretty cool too, though. I loved hearing their stories, and realizing those funny runner quirks weren’t so crazy.” Fulton, who has com-mitted to the University of Wash-ington next year, went out with the lead pack before fading to a still

very respectable 13th-place finish in 17:50. “I think I could have run smarter in hindsight,” the High-lands Ranch senior added. “I’m not very good in packs. I‘m not very aggressive so I get a little bit

wigged out when I get elbowed. I wanted to run as easy as I could without being in the thick of it. I trip a lot and was trying to avoid getting caught up in the pack too much. It’s a big, big pack in the first mile. But I think it hurt me in the second half.”

niKe teaM regionals The Nike series empha-sizes team competition, although individuals participate. Held in easy-to-reach Mesa, Arizona the weekend following Thanksgiv-ing, a much larger contingent of Colorado preps trek to the Nike Team Regionals, hoping to qualify for the finals in Portland, Oregon. The Southwest regional included teams from Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada competing on the ultra-flat Toka

Sticks Golf Course. The Fort Collins H.S. girls won the regional title, while Louisville’s Monarch H.S. rebounded from a disappointing State meet to land just one point behind, thus advancing both teams to the nationals. The Lambkins’ third finisher, Audrey Oweimrin, may have provided the winning margin. “In the last 50 meters, I saw two Monarch runners and said ‘Nooo’ and I passed them,” said the freshman. Two young runners served notice that they – and their teams – will be dueling for years to come. The Lambkins’ super soph Erin Hooker followed up her second-place State meet finish – smack between Lakowske and Fulton – by chasing win-ner Julia Foster of Albuquerque Academy all the way to the line to place second. Monarch was led by 16th-place Claire Green, and all five scorers finished within a 46-second spread. Also qualifying as individuals were junior Hannah

griffin hay of fort collins (413), spencer Wenck of palmer ridge (Black shorts, White top), and david garcia of fort collins (411) at the front of the pack early in the ntn regional race race.

Everson of Liberty H.S. in Colorado Springs, Highlands Ranch H.S. junior Kristen Kientz, and sophomore Kailie Hartman of Loveland H.S. In the boys’ race, American Fork, Utah was the consensus pre-meet pick, and they didn’t disappoint, placing its runners a jaw-dropping 3-4-10-13-14 for a measly 44 points. The question surrounded which school would garner second-place and its automatic nationals qualifying spot, while the third-place finisher would leave Arizona in limbo, to await its fate as a possible at-large qualifier, or perhaps nothing at all. Following the race, Fort Collins coach Chris Suppes nervously awaited the results, just hoping his boys might have squeaked past perennial power Albuquer-que Academy into that scary third spot. That awards ceremony announcement provided a shock heard all the way back to northern Colorado. The Lambkins had actually finished second! “They had a pretty amazing race, they impressed me,” said Fort Collins coach Chris Suppes. “For us to put three guys under 16 (minutes) is a pretty major feat. And to beat some of the teams they did is pretty amazing and I’m just surprised and happy. Our boys have some areas we can improve, and I think we will improve going into nationals.” The Colorado contingent would be joined by individual qualifiers Spencer Wenck, the 4A state champion from Palmer Ridge H.S., who ran 15:20 and was second overall only to Billy Orman of Tuba City, Ariz., and 5A runner-up Danny Carney of Dakota Ridge H.S., who was third, five seconds behind Wenck. “I went into it with the mentality of just running with the people and not going for so much of a time. I’m not great at flat races,” said Wenck, who is favoring attending MIT next year, but is also considering schools like Texas and Stanford. “I was planning on get-ting second or third, so when I was in second I just tried to hang onto that.” niKe teaM nationals All of these prep runners arrived at the national meet at Portland Meadows to be greeted by the sloppiest of sloppy tracks due to steady rain in the prior several days. The Fort Collins boys, despite being state 5A champs, still weren’t as highly-regarded as their girls. Senior David Garcia, the Lambkins’ number one runner all season, didn’t have a great day in the muddy conditions. However, on the backs of superior depth provided by juniors Griffin Hay and Tait Rutherford, Fort Collins, as predicted by Suppes, did indeed improve, pulling off a mild surprise by landing in fourth-place. Hay and Rutherford were 44th and 45th (19th and 20th in the team scoring), Garcia 76th (37th in team scoring), followed by John Patterson and Jefferson Abbey. Not only did Fort Collins beat American Fork by a healthy margin, they were also just six points out of third-place. The top two spots were captured by Arcadia, Calif., and Fayetteville-Manlius, N.Y. Perhaps just as big a surprise was the finish of Wenck. He steamed through the muck almost by himself, finishing in fifth-place. “The first part of the year I definitely

wasn’t expected to do anything like I did. It’s kind of neat to prove something that nobody ever thought you could do. Palmer Ridge is in our third year, so nobody knows about it, but now they do. I really wanted to win state, but I didn’t expect to have an undefeated season and win by 20 seconds. I’m surprised by how much I improved from last season,”

said Wenck, who was 17th at state in ’09. “I trained more during the summer and was more intense about it. The summer before, I was OK skipping a day and doing some other exercise, but this summer I stuck with the schedule my coach gave me and started with a better base (about 60 miles per week).” “I wanted to get out strong so I wouldn’t get stuck behind the pack in that mud,” said Wenck, who was wearing spikes for the first time due to the conditions. “So I wanted to get out in the top 15, and finish in the top 10 because that was better than I was supposed to do. When I got out I was in eighth in the first 800, I just didn’t want to lose any ground after that. I kept up my pace and picked a few people off. I was going a little bit faster than I thought compared to everyone else and it worked out. When people started dropping off, it was easy to pass them.” The Fort Collins boys’ accomplish-ment doesn’t diminish the girls’ sixth-place performance, giving the Front Range Leaguers one of the two best combined team perfor-mances in the nation. Only Fayetteville-Man-lius, whose girls took first with a mind-bog-gling 27 points, had a superior overall placing. Hooker led the way again with a 17th-place finish (ninth in the team scoring). Marci Witczak followed her in 54th (25th team), pursued by Oweimrin, Michelle Kramer, and Maddie Staab. As impressive as it is for them to finish sixth in the premier team race in the nation, the Lambkins’ girls have been in the top seven the past four years running. Monarch mostly found itself behind most of the field early on and rallying in the mud proved to be too much of a hurdle to overcome. The Coyotes were 15th with Green their highest finisher in 77th place. Colorado individuals Kientz was 44th, Everson 81st, and Hartman 138th. Wenck added, “It was amazing being with the best people in the nation and not looking up to them, finding out that I’m actually a pretty decent runner and not much different than them. It’s a little bit of a confi-dence booster.” Their performances should give a confidence boost to all Colorado prep runners aspiring to compete on the national stage.

Perfect Weather for Yeti Chase Selling out just seven weeks after it was announced, the inaugural Yeti Chase lived up to expectations as a fun winter event. The 5K and 10K run, held at Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park, hit its 500 entrant limit more than a week before race day. Runners were treated to a perfect winter day, with sunshine, clear skies, and no wind as they cruised through the scenic 2,500 acre park on a mix of roads and bike paths on January 22. In the spirit of the event, the Summit Cove Yeti was the first onto the course, then a minute later the runners gave chase. Looping back to the finish, the Yeti greeted finishers with a cheer or a high-five. Pro triathlete Jordan Jones took home the $100 first place prize in the 10K, recording a speedy 34:17 over the hilly course. Heather Utrata took home the women’s cash with her 39:11 winning time.

a view, or a thought that makes you glad to be alive. Glad that your heart is beating out of your chest. Glad that you are a runner. OK. The endorphins were kicking in. Halfway, and P was feeling good enough to pick up the pace. The race was on. Accelerating up a hill, and around a sharp curve, P stifled a laugh, taking inventory. Legs? Check. Air? Check. Breathing hard. Wheezing really. A gray haired gentleman tried to pass on the left, and then the right. Giving nothing, P dug deep, red line looming, legs getting a little wobbly. A voice from the I-chi mist spoke. “Use the Force Puke. Use the Force.” “I got nothing,” P thought. “Adri-enne!!” P screamed internally. No wait, that was from another movie. “I’m your father Puke.” A visage of Dick Van Patten. “No.” P could smell the finish. “If I can just maintain, keep it going, shoot my laser canon down the exhaust chute, I can destroy this death star,” P thought, keeping with the Star Wars imagery. Finish strong P did, crossing the line to a cacophony of beer garden music and spatter of glove-muted claps. It was P’s best time by more than a minute and it glowed all black and glossy. Air fist pump. Hockey goal arm and fist pump. A little jumpy-doo in the air, double air fisty pump with a two and a half twist. Yeah! Walking back to the car P passed FRPW laying on the ground. FRPW had finished at least five minutes ahead of P. P: “How did it go?” FRPW: “Fourth in AG. Didn’t have it today. It was kind of strange.” P: “Sorry about that. You know what they say. It’s 90 percent half mental and if you don’t believe that I can rhyme the last word of what you just said.” FRPW: “Huh?” P: “Exactly.” And that is what happened. The resistance was saved. The emperor and his cronies had been stopped, at least for now. The Wookies had a big party. P drank too much and was true to namesake. The Free World was safe, at least for the moment.

Mike Moyer lives in Lakewood. Mike is allowed to run and race and live with his wife and son and three Saint Bernards, at least until they tell him to stop.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away there lived a person. Puke Earthjogger. OK. Bad name, but you get the point. He grew up on a planet that looked much like Moab. Puke - P - loved to run. Well mostly. When it was really, really windy and the rain came down sideways in a blinding spray, P would stay inside and watch reruns of Sponge Bob Squarepants. P was not “God’s Gift to Running.” In a race, P would be somewhere in there. P would not wait around a venue for the results to be posted. If P was close to or faster than the time before, P was happy. One early and frigid race morning, as P was waiting patiently in line for a port-o-potty, a nervous fellow racer struck up a conversation. This conversation set the fate of the free world spinning and a tottering. FRPW (Fellow Race Potty Waiter): “You know. I’ve been training really hard. I’ve put in more miles, ran more hills, done speed work six times a week. I think I’m really peaked for this race.” P: “You’ve done speed work six times a week? FRPW: “Yeah. It’s this new program I’m following. It’s called Run and Run and be the best because the Fate of the Free World Depends on It Program. I think it was developed by somebody that knows Lance Armstrong and is related to Chris Car-michael and once slept with Troy Jacobson.” P: “Hmm. That was a run on sen-tence, but it sounds good.” FRPW: “You betcha!”

P: “Did the program call for mass amounts of amphetamines as well?” FRPW: “Hah!!! That’s funny. You say that cause I’m all wired and stuff.” P: “Are you wired?” FRPW: “I’m just peaking. Can you feel it?! The program called for six cups of coffee and some kind of pre-race mix. Came in a jar. A jar my friend. With a lid!” P: “You had me at - it came in a jar.” FRPW: “I am going to win this thing. My age group at least. Hills three times a week, speed work six times a week, four long runs a week. I’m going to win. What have you ever done?” P : “I once wrote a poem using only words that rhyme with orange.” FRPW: “Hah! Wow. Lighting the world on fire. Excuse me, I have to use the john.” The race was an early season ten miler. It had snowed the night before and the trail was snowy and ice packed. P, always prepared, took out the Yak Trax. P stood somewhere in the middle of the bunched starting group. The pack was giving away precious body warmth. P took comfort in its embrace. The gun went off. Pop! Or maybe it was a horn. Honk! It might have been some guy saying…Go! It doesn’t matter. The race started. P cruised the first couple of miles, enjoying the scenery. It could have been the frozen tundra of Alaska or the dark side of the Moon. It could have been a deserted trail with
