This beautifully crafted play had its first outing when it won the Kenneth Tynan award in 1957. Set in Trinidad’s Port of Spain after World War II, the residence of a small yard draws us into their tumultuous lives under the suns sweltering heat. The handsome singleton Ephraim, played by Danny Sapani, has got the lovely Rosa (Jade Anouka) pregnant. However, he has plans to leave the poverty of the Caribbean and go to Liverpool to make a new life for himself. Literally living on top of each other and as good as check to cheek landlord and leach, Old Mack also has his eye on the beautiful Rosa and adorns her with gifts while being mean to his other tenants except for Mavis. Played by Jenny Jules, Mavis lights up the stage with her comical depiction of the local prostitute entertaining the soldiers each night and infuriating matriarch Sophia Adams masterfully played by Martina Laird. Sophia struggles to hold everything and everybody together, washing delicate silks for the rich, breast-feeding her newborn child, chasing after her drunken husband and saving money for her daughter who has won a scholarship. Sharp tongued,

straight talking and all heart, Martina’s performance transcends the stereotypical Caribbean mother and expresses a range of emotions which continues to make this play a delight to behold.

With a colourful, tropical set that transports you back to the West Indies this piece feels as fresh as they day it was written. Played out with great conviction by the ensemble cast, ably directed by Michael Buffong, that it is hard not to be moved by it.

Music is still Tyreses first love, despite claiming he wouldn’t return to singing. The smooth R’n’B crooner made a much welcomed comeback last year after taking a five year break to pursue other interests including a successful film career and modeling.

His book ‘How To Get Out of Your Own Way’, hits stores next month as well as being in the middle of penning, ‘Manology’ with Reverend Run. But before he makes his way back to the silver screen he is producing a new disc for R&B crooner Leon Timbo.

Proclaiming it the best album of his career, ‘Open Invitation’ came out in 2011 and was Tyrese’s 5th studio album. The self-released EP has definitely proved that his hiatus hasn’t affected his creativity or singing, with the album enjoying much successes including claiming the top R’n’B spot on a iTunes and debuting in the top

10 of Billboard’s album chart.Tyrese has come a long way from the kid who had resigned himself to a future as a trash man, to earning his big break singing the now iconic phrase ‘Always Coca-Cola’ for the ad campaign, propelling him to stardom.

Through all his hardships, Tyrese has made sure to maintain a relationship with his daughter Shayla. He says that his personal conflict with his ex won’t keep him from being a father to his daughter. Well, Life in Colour hopes his personal challenges will not keep him away from London too long next time either. By Mai Mihaimeed

It’s a rainy, grey Sunday afternoon and I’ve made a decision that I think

I’m regretting. Now remember, I’m trying to navigate my way back into this ever so crazy singing world. So far, songs are being written and are a-waiting a date to be recorded, I am trying to force myself to connect with people on Facebook to build up this oh so important social network. So with this newly found visibility I realised that the pictures I have of myself are old and doesn’t say anything about who I am. With this in mind and after being flummoxed about what I should look like especially because the money keeps getting siphoned off to pay those all important bills, I await my fate. Why am I doing it? Well some wise person said ‘spend now and reap the rewards later’, so my debt will have more friends called debt - (not sensible, I know, I know). My good mate Bumi (great singer and also a

talented photographer) is coming to my house. Whoa! I’ve just discovered the biggest spot in my face. It’s big! You know the kind that makes me look like I’ve developed an infectious disease. Where people don’t like to sit next to you on the train just in case they’re contaminated. It’s blistered and sore and is definitely not ‘the look’ if I want to come over diva-esk. I decide to slap the make-up on, but the spot still protrudes like my Siamese twin. But we get on with the shoot. Bumi’s style’s me and tells me what to do and my new family member throbs on my face. Anyhow, the shoot is over. Luckily I had some rice and peas and chicken ready to fill our bellies (veggie sausage for me). We eat and I begin to feel human again. So, it’s done and as you can see, my picture has changed on this page. Question, can you spot the spot?

Lauryn earned her reputation as a formidable force in Hip Hop as the standout lone female vocalist with the Fugees, enjoying many successes with the group and later for her critically acclaimed solo work, racking up five Grammy Awards, including Best Album in 1999.

Despite what looked like would be a long and promising career, the fame monster soon consumed

Hill. Her soulful confessions can be heard on the recording of a live performance released as an album, ‘MTV Unplugged 2.0’. This performance brought to light her depression, vulnerability and discomfort with the limelight.

Since then Lauryn’s appearances have been rare and fleeting, controversy following the singer-rapper each time she would re-emerge. But through all the
