1 Area 6 DECA took over Seattle! This was the first year I was able to attend the Western Region Leadership Conference and it was definitely an experience I will never forget. The first night we were there was the opening session, where we got to listen to the amazing motivational speaker, Josh Sundquist. If you weren’t able to be there I highly recommend looking him up on YouTube because his story was truly inspirational and I think everyone in that room related to him in one way or another. On Friday and Saturday we got to choose which sessions we wanted to go to. Some of the ones I went to were Risking to Win, Learning the Art of Trend Spotting, and The Nordstrom Way of Life. These were really interesting because you got to listen to people who were experienced and knew what they were talking about. After the sessions on Saturday there was the Geo Teaming event, which was quite the experience. After spending 2 hours in the wind and rain and having troubles with the GPS I think we ended up placing 80 th out of 100 teams, but we did learn a lot about each other as a team in the process. Later that night was closing session where we got to see a hilarious hypnotist show by Jim Wand. Overall I had a great time meeting and making connections with new people. I learned so much about the business world and all that goes into it. - Emily Sherman, KeHS DECA DECEMBER 2012 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4 AREA 6 CHAPTERS: Chiawana Grandview Hanford Kahlotus Kamiakin Kennewick Pasco Richland Southridge INSIDE THIS ISSUE: WRLC Recap- 1 Spirit Award - 2 Member of the Month - 3 Area Competition - 4 Meet the candidates- 5, 6, 7 Chapter Visitations - 8 Trivia - 9

Other ways to get points...

Inside Story Headline

Spirit Award! The purpose of the Area Spirit Award is to get members, advisors, and chapters as a whole more involved in activities. A chapter wins by having the most points in their spirit award “account” at the end of the DECA year. Points can be obtained in multiple ways such as; attending an Area event, “liking” the Area 6 FB Page, sending Britany a picture of your

DECA Chapter, having a chapter visitation, or being the fastest email reply to any email updates Britany sends out. The winning chapter is given the trophy, shown at the left, to keep in their DECA classroom for the following school year. The trophy will be engraved with the school name and winning year. My hope is that future Area 6

President’s will continue the Area 6 Spirit Award, therefore the trophy will be a “traveling” trophy and have many different school names on it. The points for each chapter will be shown in each newsletter. If you ever have any questions about how your chapter got its points, ask Britany!

Spirit Award Points:

Chiawana - 184

Grandview - 137

Hanford - 335

Kahlotus - 117

Kamiakin – 302

Kennewick - 444

Pasco – 444

Richland - 474

Southridge - 571

**The Area President’s home chapter can only earn points for events that do not require the Area President’s attendance.

Congratulations to Arthur Alcazar from Grandview High School for being nominated and chosen as the November

Meet your Area 6 President Candidates!

Dillon Tool, Southridge High School I am a very outgoing person that wants to meet every person in Area 6 DECA. Besides DECA I

am in my school ASB, I am our Publicity Manager, and our schools Drama Club. But overall,

DECA is my true passion, I put down everything that I have when there is something I can do for

DECA. I can't wait to see all of you at Area Competition.

Why do you want to be the 2013-2014 Area 6 President? I want to be Area 6 President because this is my 3rd year in DECA and I want to further my knowledge and passion with this wonderful club. And to make sure that people join DECA earlier and to abolish the phrase "I wish I had joined DECA sooner". I know that DECA is not for everyone, but I believe that everyone should get a chance or at least a taste of what DECA is like.

What do you plan to do that will benefit Area 6? I plan on making Area 6 a closer area, but not just communicating. I want to take it one step further and have the area be closer. I want chapters to be able to call each other for help or to hang out and just have a fun friendly atmosphere.

What are your accomplishments thus far as a DECA Member of Southridge High School? My Accomplishments so far area going to SCDC twice, hopefully a third time this year!!! I have also been to ICDC for the Chapter Management Academy.

What's one thing you want to learn and/or gain from being a State Officer? I want to learn what its like to put on a big conference for thousands of DECA members that have the same passion I do. I also want to be the voice for my chapter and make sure that every chapters voice is heard in decision making.

If you were an ice cream flavor what would you be and why? If I were ice cream, I would be cookie dough. Simple vanilla ice cream with sweet cookie dough pieces throughout.

Meet your Area 6 President Candidates!

Minji Kim, Hanford High School Hello! My name is Minji Kim and currently, I am a junior at Hanford High School. I am active as our chapter's Secretary and Events Manager, yet, I try to get involved in as many DECA-related activities as possible! I play tennis in and outside of school, but my main love is for tae kwon do. I love its mindset of bouncing back from an kick to the head with a fierce smile on! As of now I am still maintaining my 4.0 and taking 4 AP courses. Besides DECA, I am involved in International

Club, Key Club, Recycling Club, and Spanish Club, but DECA is always my main focus.

Why do you want to be the 2013-2014 Area 6 President? I would like to be the next Area 6 President so I have the opportunity to give as many other students the opportunities I was given through DECA. I want to break down the wall of bias put up against business among our generation and organize the best possible year full of amazing and fun DECA activities for everyone to highlight THEIR year.

What do you plan to do that will benefit Area 6? I will host DECA bonding picnics or outside movies that any DECA member could attend and will create a fb group or page between me and the DECA members throughout the area so they can give me feedback, just to name a few.

What are your accomplishments thus far as a DECA Member of Hanford High School? I am Secretary and Events Manager but I also do any other work that I can throughout DECA. I have also qualified for State last year in retail merchandising.

What's one thing you want to learn and/or gain from being a State Officer? I would like to enhance my public speaking skills especially in front of hundred or thousands of people.

If you were a cartoon character, what would you be and why? I would be Tigger from Winnie the Pooh because he's always bouncing back up from adversity with a smile!
