Get Ready for Cheese Rolling !MONDAY 4TH MAY 2015

The Parish Pump Local News

This year’s theme is Celebrating the 70thanniversary of VE Day.

On 7th May 1945 at Rheims, Germanysigned an unconditional surrender whichcame into effect the next day. Of course, fighting went on in the Far East until August15th when the Japanese surrendered, but theend of war in Europe was celebrated allover.

So far, there is little sign of extensivenational celebrations but many communitiesare making plans and CambridgeshireCounty Council are offering small grants tosupport local events, which the ParishCouncil are applying for. If we aresuccessful then we can go beyond CheeseRolling and perhaps provide something forthe children and for the older members ofour community, many of whom (includingSCAN's Editor) lived through the war and itsimmediate aftermath. This may well be thelast such celebration as the participants areinevitably passing away.

MEAT & VEGTo get you into the mood, the next fewissues will feature recipes and garden hintstaken from official advice which poured outfrom the government during the war years.

The children are increasing theirindependence by being encouraged to puton their own coats, using the bathroomindependently and the older children areeven preparing their own snacks - whichleads to a lot of mess but very proudchildren!

The children have also enjoyed learningabout and celebrating the Chinese New Yearand they are looking forward to Valentine’sDay.

A big thank you to everyone who helped orattended one of the Christmas fundraisers. We made an amazing £1200, which wethink is wonderful! We cannot do this onour own; your support is invaluable. Wewill bring you details of how we spend thismoney in future issues.

Poo CornerTHE LAST WORD ON DOG FOULING!

Just as residents are heartily sick of steppingin other people’s dog mess, so many areequally tired of reading about it in SCAN. Sothe editorial team has decided that the topichas been highlighted often enough recentlyto declare SCAN a poop-free publication, atleast for the next few months. We appreciateit is a major issue so this article will try tomake clear the law and how to complain.

THE LAW● It is an offence not to remove dog faeces

● It is also an offence to permit a dog toenter land from which it is excluded.

● If found guilty in a Magistrates Court themaximum fine is £1000.

● The on-the-spot fine is £75.

Areas affected are land to which the publichas access, which includes:

● playing fields

● cemeteries

● school premises

● footpaths and roads with a speed limit of40mph or less.

PROFILE OF A DOG FOULERObviously a generalization, but researchsuggests that irresponsible dog owners are:

● more likely to be male than female

● slightly more likely to be between 18 and24 years old

● from all social classes

● aware they could be fined, but don'tbelieve they will get caught

● only likely to clear up after their dogs ifshaken or shocked into it.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS1.All dogs should be wormed regularly.

Nearly all puppies are born with theToxocara infection.

2.Always carry a plastic bag to pick up whenneeded. Bags are available from StiltonParish Council free of charge.

3.Report offences - if you witness dogfouling report it to 01480 388302.

You will need to give as much informationas possible, especially:

● Exact location of the offence

● Description of the dog

● Name and address of the offender

● Description of the offender

What isHealthwatch

Cambridgeshire? Our job is to make sure you have a say whenimportant decisions are made about localhealth and care services. We are interestedin any recent experiences you have of localhealth or care services that you are happyto share with us.

The big health story in the news this NewYear is about pressures on our localhospitals. We know that these are linkedto other issues, like getting to see a GP whenyou need to and getting care in place whenyou are coming home from hospital. Wehave two new projects that will look at someof these issues from a different viewpoint.

In our ‘First Steps to Health’ project wewant to find out about the first thing youwould do to solve different health issues.Would you work it out yourself, see apharmacist, call NHS 111 or see your GP?We all solve things in different ways.Knowing what you do can help our localGP Practices and the people who makedecisions about local health services planbetter care. Please do take part in our surveyeither on our website or by contacting ouroffice.

We also need you to help us develop ourlocal ‘Care Home’ project. We want touse our statutory ‘Duty to Enter & View’

local care homes. This means we have alegal right to visit places that provide publichealth or care services, to see what kind ofcare they are providing.

We need to recruit volunteers to be‘Authorised Representatives’. Your rolewill be to go into local care homes and talkto the people there about the care beingprovided. This might include talking toresidents, their relatives, friends and carehome staff. You will get lots of training andsupport.

Do you have any recent experience of alocal care home, or do you know someonewho has? Please tell us about it. We willuse what you tell us to plan which homeswe will visit and what to look at. We arealso talking to the County Council and theCare Quality Commission, to help us planwhere we should visit.

Get in touch to find out more or we cancome and talk to your group aboutHealthwatch.

Pour into a greased 8 inch cake tin and bakein a preheated oven, Gas Mark 4 or 380oF(oh, alright then, 190oC!) for an hour and ahalf.

Reports say this is a nice moist cake thatmade good use of a family's rations.Rationing was introduced in 1940 to ensurethat everyone got an adequate share of foodin a situation where the submarine war wasreducing vital imports. Prices were alsocontrolled so everyone could afford theirrations, and food hoarding was punished.
