Creating a safe home forthe local peregrines

The Cathedral now has the nesting box for peregrines installed on the South West side of the West Tower.

The idea came from PCSO Jonathan Hall of Ely Police Station an keen bird watcher and nature lover.

After meeting with Viki Rowlinson the Clerk of works it was decided to install it in the section known as the Norman Gutters (the top of the

Norman Tower, before it was extended to how it is today in the 1300s).

He and his brother spent Saturday 13th Feb, ferrying the parts of the box up the west tower to the section three quarters of the way up the tower an epic job!

It will take time before it is inhabited, but we hope that the peregrines nesting in Cambridge offspring will find us and move in!

KING’S Ely’s annual Music Festival concluded this week after two weeks of keenly contested competition.

Parents, pupils, staff and members of the public were welcomed to the splendour of Ely Cathedral, where the King’s Ely orchestra performed upon arrival, and later enjoyed a high standard of music by students from King’s Ely Senior. This year, there were 120 entries in total across 19 classes, including 49 vocal entries. That number was whittled down to seven in the intermediate final (13-15 year olds) and to seven in the senior final (16-18 year olds).

The winners (pictured), included intermediate instrumentalist, intermediate singer, senior instrumentalist and senior singer, as well as recipients of the Walser Cup and Hunter Cup. The Walser Cup, awarded to Katie Diss, was donated in memory of David Walser, a former Chaplain of the school who loved music. The Hunter Cup, donated by Monica Hunter, a former piano teacher at the

school, was awarded to Tom Scott. The Senior Young Musician of the Year and the Walser Trophy was awarded to Yinni Hu.

Director of Music, Jonathan Kingston, expressed his delight at the performances from the finalists: “The Music Festival final was a truly spectacular event; some 14 stunning performances given

in the splendour of Ely Cathedral from a total of 120 participants that had been through the heats and semi-final. This was a real celebration of musical creativity at King’s Ely and the school community is immensely proud of all musicians that took part.”

The adjudicator for the night was Mr Peter King, who is

the Director of Music at Bath Abbey, and a well-known recitalist in Britain and abroad. Mr King also commended the performers:“I was thrilled to be invited to judge this festival. The standard of singing and playing was very high indeed and I had some extremely difficult decisions to make based upon what I had heard. Thank you for the warmth of your welcome and for some superb performances.”

More upgrades submitted for development

With plans and consultation already underway on the Market Square, seems the owners of the old Woolworths store and the Bargain Shop on Forehill also plan to make changes.

The plan is to build 6 townhouses and 1 flat and a retail unit while retaining the existing front of the building.

Car parking – “The proposal provides 19 spaces in total, of which 7 are to be utilised for the residential units and 12 given over to the Market Place development.” access is from Broad Street Car Park.

Local company Rannerlow are to hold their consultation Thursday 25th & Saturday 27th for the renovation of the Market Place block in the Cathedral Centre from 12 noon to 2:30pm.It is open to the public.

FeaturesIt was out with the old and in with the new at Market Street, Ely, as four replacement bus shelters were erected, much to the delight of local residents.

They were installed the week beginning 18th January and were completed that Sunday. Work was undertaken in the evenings to reduce disruption.

The old bus shelters had deteriorated significantly and were heavily scratched, with many areas of rust and sticky residue left by poster tape. Not only were they very unpleasant to the eye, they were also obtrusive to shops, hiding their signs and front windows. This was bad for business and unhelpful to those wishing to locate certain stores. The old shelters also proved somewhat inadequate at protecting residents from the rain.

As East Cambridgeshire District Council owns these bus shelters, they were determined to make the necessary improvements. It was concluded that it would be more cost effective to replace them than to refurbish the existing structures.

The new bus shelters are already benefiting those who travel to the City for work and leisure, and have certainly added positively to the overall look and feel of one of Ely’s busiest streets.

Anne Williams, from Mepal, said: “The bus shelters are very welcome. The old ones didn’t really keep you dry because their rooves didn’t come over

enough.”

Lynne Eastern, on her way to Sutton, added: “There wasn’t enough room on the old seats opposite the bus shelters and you couldn’t sit on them when it was wet, so it’s wonderful to now have seats within the bus

shelters that are undercover.”

Further compliments from local residents were “they are very smart” and they are “great for my legs after a hard day’s shopping.”

Another positive is that the new shelters have Perspex panels which can be replaced if needed, whereas the old ones did not and instead had fixed panels. Going forward, it means that the clean and pleasing appearance of the new bus shelters can be maintained.

Councillor Bill Hunt, who is Chairman of the Asset Development Committee, stated: “We recognised a long time ago that it was necessary to replace the bus shelters on Market Street, but we were keen to manage the task properly and so waited until the right time, when the money was available, to conduct the work. We are delighted with how the new bus shelters look and with the positive responses they have received from the local residents that use them every day.”

These new bus shelters will, no doubt, continue to benefit those travelling to and from the City for years to come.

New bus shelters a welcome addition to
