This Christmas Sue Ryder Care are giving local businesses

an opportunity to help fund the charities vital work, while saving a lot of time and effort!

To save you one less task on the run up to the festive period we have produced a Christmas Tree Poster. Instead of sending Christmas cards to everyone in your office, you can save paper and time by using our Christmas Tree Poster to write your greetings and well wishes to everyone.

All you need to do is pop our Christmas Tree Poster up in a prominent place in the office,

for example on the staff notice board or in the canteen and place a collection box nearby so your colleagues can donate the money they would have spent on cards to charity.

This is a fun and easy way to raise money! Sue Ryder Care are a national healthcare charity providing compassionate care and social support to people with challenging end of life and long term conditions including cancer, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntingdon’s and Parkinson’s Disease, dementia and brain injury. The charity works locally with it’s Trafford Homecare service providing 800 hours

of personal care each week to people with a range of long term conditions in their own homes.

Decorate and donate this Christmas

Snow WhiteAltrincham Garrick Playhouse

“Christmas isn’t Christmas without the Altrincham Garrick panto” – those words have been uttered many times over the 40+ years that pantomimes have been performed at The Garrick Playhouse in Altrincham.Could it have something to do with the wonderful costumes for which the wardrobe department is famous?Or perhaps it is the exciting effects that the clever technicians always seem to conjure up for your enjoyment.Maybe it’s the terrific song and dance routines that make you want to join in – and of course the Garrick pantomime is truly traditional!

On January 21st, Altrincham will play host to the Big

Green Music Night, an evening of music, magic and plenty of on-hand advice to help you save energy and money on your house-hold bills. The aim is to promote a new project in the area called the Energy Academy, which is help-ing local residents in Timperley, Altrincham and Hale to reduce their carbon footprint by look-ing at the way their houses are heated and insulated, and helping them to live more sustainably.View Timperley went to meet Daniel Gallagher, a Hale-based musician and supporter of the initiative who’ll be performing on the night. Also on hand was Tony Li, organiser of the event and a Voluntary Project Manager for the Energy Academy.

Dan what kinds of music do you play and what music can people expect to hear on the night?I’m a singer / song writer and I predominantly play acoustic music. I write my own songs, a few of which I will be performing on the night. I write about everyday situations and just try to be honest in my song writing and the way I sing and deliver the song.

Do you play under a band name Dan?Recently I played at the Night and Day cafe in Manchester and was asked to come up with a band name, I was playing as a duo with

my friend who is a violinist and we called ourselves the Butterfly exhibit.

Who are your influences?Jeff and Tim Buckley are my main influences. Over the years I have tried to go for a range in my vocal delivery similar to theirs. Although he is a different style of singer Tom Waits is a big influence on me. I also like jazz music and particularly a guy called Brad Mehldau. Dan, what do you tend to write about, are all your tracks about sustainable living? No, they’re not specifically about sustainable living. They are about vulnerability. They’re about recognizing that everybody has problems or trying to widen my perspective. Maybe through my music I can make people feel a bit more

compassionate about other people and make people realise they are not alone.

Tony, how do you think the night will promote what you are doing through the Energy Academy? The main focus of the night will be to provide some good quality entertainment for the local communities on one of the dark and cold January nights we know we can get in these parts. A local company called

We will also be on hand with our own Home Energy Check and Pledge forms, and our volunteers will be available to give advice about how people can live more sustainable lives.

Is this going to be a free event? It’s free, but we will leave a few donation pots around in case anyone is feeling generous. What happens to the money if people do make the donation? All of the money will go to the charity supporting the Energy Academy – Action for

Sustainable Living. They support communities all over Manchester and Trafford who set up projects like waste reduction / recycling projects, community allotments etc and their work relies on funding and donations. It would be fantastic to raise some money to help them continue with their work.

Dan, what other bands will be playing on the night? We do have a lot of variety . There’s 7 acts in total including me, Andy Hunt who is the Sustainability Manager for Trafford Council and a local folk singer from Hale Barns called John Condy. We also have Mark the Magician who will be throwing out some “David Blaine” style tricks in the intervals.

Team of the MonthThe Twizzles are Altrincham

Silverblades newest and youngest synchronised skating team and are one of 4 teams making up the ISS Altrincham squad, coached by Sam Ozard and David McGrouther. The kids range from 6 to 11 years of age. They formed in June 09 and since then have trained every Monday evening at 6.15 pm, but supplement this in the run up to competitions with office training on Sunday and 6 am practice on Saturday mornings. The team competed in the Scottish National championships in October 2009 where they finished 6th. They will next compete in the British National championships in February 2010.

Before that the Twizzles will perform in the Christmas production Santa goes to Hollywood, at Altrincham Ice rink on 9th and 10th December, where the children will make up part of the cast as well as performing their synchro routine.

If you would like more information about the Twizzles, Please contact the Team coach Sam Ozard on 07709 925 595

So as well as the all rounded entertainment on offer, what else will people get out of the night from a sustainable angle? We will be on hand to offer advice. If people want to they can fill in our Pledge and Home Energy Check forms. The Pledge Forms assess what actions people are taking to live more sustainably and then gives them further ideas. The completed Home Energy Check forms go to the Energy Saving Trust who then send each household a personalised report showing how much energy they use, the ways in which it can be saved and also tells you the kind of grants you may be eligible for.

A question to both of you, Music and Charity seem to go well together, why do you think that is?Tony - I think it’s because it strikes a chord with people. Dan – Sometimes when things are dealt with in a purely political sense people tend to pontificate about things. I think music is a welcome change in perspective which tries to deliver a message in a different way, giving the issue a more 3-dimentional and tangible perspective.

The Big Green Music Night takes place at the Flaming Galah bar in Altrincham on the 21st January. Doors open at 7:30pm.

Have you got a story worth telling? Get in touch, we’re eager to hear about it!

Charity Army Challenge

Three friends from Trafford took part in a demanding

10 mile yomp inspired by the selection process of the British Army’s toughest regiment. Paul Naylor and Neil Cust from Timperley, and Anthony Dillon from Hale - all chartered surveyors - swapped their suits for camouflage gear at Catterick Barracks on Sunday where they were attempting the legendary Parachute Regiment Challenge.

The multi-terrain endurance race - completion of which is a pre-requisite before solders can apply to join the regiment - requires participants to carry a Bergen rucksack weighted with 35 pounds of sand bags. Additionally, each competitor has just one hour 50 minutes to complete the arduous course - nicknamed Britain’s Everest.

Paul 43, told View Timperley “It was really good fun but it was also really hard.” Paul who has previously completed the London Marathon and the Great North Run added “this was a completely different ball game with the extra weight we had to carry and the type of terrain we were going over” “Some people just raced off ahead at the start but we’d decided to take it a little slower.” The three friends - who all completed the course in time - had to negotiate steep hills, wade through rivers, and contend with their packs getting increasingly

heavy as they progressed the route. “The sand bags got heavier as we went around as they started soaking up sweat and the water,” continued Paul. “And you also had to carry food and water which wasn’t part of the 35 pounds.

To date, Paul, Neil and Anthony have raised £2,600 which exceeds the originally planned £1,500. All the money raised will go to the Army’s Help for Heroes charity which supports wounded British soldiers. If you would like to add to their total you can make a donation by visiting www.justgiving.com/Anthony-Dillon.

Timperley OrchardThe Timperley Community Orchard on the Trafford Drive / Beech Filed allotment site has won 3 awards in the North West Britain in Bloom 2009, including the Special Conservation & Environmental award.

The Orchard was created in 2002 when Frauke Morton and Mary Eastwood (Pictured) decided it would be good to make an orchard on an area of disused allotments. Cheshire landscape Trust gave us 50 trees explained Mary, many of them Old Cheshire Heritage varieties. A willing group of allotment holders

planted them and they continue to work on the orchard for pruning and maintenance. The orchard has flourished and we now have apple days in September and enjoy the fruits.

Altrincham & District Branch Arthritis Care

About Arthritis – Arthritis affects more than 9 mil-

lion people in the UK – 1 in 5 of the adult population. There are about 27,000 young people under the age of 25 in the UK with arthritis. As yet there is no cure and arthritis remains the largest single cause of physical disability in the UK. There are more than 200 types of arthritis. However, there are many ways of treating the symptoms and managing your condition by protecting your

joints and keeping mobile with exercise

and by taking medication.

Arthritis Care Services – A helpline service offering confidential support and information is available.

Freephone helpline : 0808 800 4050 between 12 noon and 4.00pm weekdays.

National rate helpline : 020 7380 6555 between 10.00am and 4.00pm weekdays.

The Source, for young people : 080 8808 2000 between 10.00am and 2.00pm weekdays, or email [email protected]

Arthritis Care run courses to help people cope with their arthritis, one of which is called Challenging Arthritis, offering skills to put them back in charge of their lives, and also self-management courses for long-term conditions.

Our Branches throughout the country offer social support with monthly meetings.

Altrincham & District Branch - Our inaugural meeting was held on the 6th March 1975 with 38 members joining. We now have 85 members registered in the Branch.

We moved to The Larkhill Centre in January 2002 after having met for some considerable time at Pownall Road in Altrincham. We hold a monthly meeting (fourth Wednesday in the month) and have an excellent programme of entertainment. We also organise two outings a year. This year in June we went to the Llangollen

canal and enjoyed a horse-drawn trip on a barge on the canal, after having had lunch at the Moreton Park Garden Centre in Chirk. We are going to Eaton Hall on the 30th September for our Autumn outing where we will enjoy afternoon tea with music by the Wall City Jazzmen. We do not meet in January, nor in June when we hold our Summer outing.

In April we hold a fundraising coffee morning and bring & buy sale at the Larkhill Centre, which we find most enjoyable and successful.

We have a network of volunteers and committee members who visit members unwell and in hospital.

We are always in need of more help and if anyone is interested in giving a few hours once a month we would be delighted to welcome them. One of our urgent needs is help in putting the tables and chairs out when we hold our meetings at the Larkhill Centre. We would be very grateful if anyone could come along at 6.30pm on our Branch meeting night to give us a hand.

We collect used stamps which we sell for Branch funds. If you have stamps and would like them taken off your hands, please contact Val Hyde.

Home Pet-Sitting Services in Trafford, South Manchester and surrounding areas. The PETsits service is popular with people who prefer not to use kennels or catteries and feel more comfortable whilst away on holiday, on business or working long work days, knowing that their home and pets are being cared for in the comfort of their own home and environment. Our service gives clients peace of mind and a sense of security.

We offer all the services you would expect of a pet-sitting company including home pet

visits, dog walking, cat feeding, pet taxis, fussing/cuddles, and much more. We can also look after animals that need medication; and all this is done in the stress-free environment of their own home.

Each booking is confirmed by a complimentary introductory visit to the home where exact details are taken and references shown.

We currently have a number of lovely cats and dogs

all looking for a new home. If you’re looking for a new pet, why not consider offering a home to one of them?

In return for offering them a second chance at life,

you’ll get a great companion. Pictures of the animals that we currently have available for adoption can be seen on our website:www.rspca-altrincham-cheshire.org.uk

Our dogs are all neutered, micro-

chipped and vaccinated prior to re-homing which is included in the adoption fee of £90. Our cats are all neutered and micro-chipped prior to

Antz in your Pantz is a family owned and run business

offering indoor soft-play activity for 0-12 year olds. Antz aims to be the premier party venue in the area with a variety of parties and prices. Their Pirate and Princess Parties have proved very popular. The centre is also available for private hire in the evenings and has attracted some celebrity names who return each year. Antz cafeteria offers a wide range of freshly prepared food and drink.

Antz in your Pantz opened two and a half years ago, in 2007, and has been a major success story. From the opening day to the present it has maintained a regular customer base. The idea for creating an indoor soft play facility in Timperley came from Laura and Paul Statham who

have been resident in Timperley for a number of years. Laura was a local childminder and Paul worked in the building trade. With four children of their own, they recognised that there was a gap in this kind of provision for young children. Instead of having to travel some distance to find a warm, safe and entertaining place to take young children Laura and Paul felt sure it could be done closer to home and so started looking round the local area.

Safety and comfort are a priority. This year’s ROSPA inspection was the best ever with a special certificate issued by the inspector. Paul and Laura strive to maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness. Currently a planning application has been submitted, in a bid to

extend the facilities on offer. To cater for the slightly older, accompanied children, a roller rink is planned with a smaller version for those younger, less agile children to skate off a bit of steam. A laser quest game is also planned. For those under 3, and babies, the soft play area will be extended; more spacious seating and cafeteria area and a quiet corner for more sedate pursuits such as reading or drawing. In the meantime, Antz in your Pantz continues to offer a warm welcome to friends, old and new; its best ‘service with a smile’ and a warm, friendly ambience.

P.S. Look out for our special offers such as the ‘Meal Deal’ offering entry and a child’s meal at reduced cost. Don’t forget to have your loyalty card stamped on each visit; if you don’t have one, please ask.
