ANGLICAN NEWSANGLICAN NEWSANGLICAN NEWSANGLICAN NEWS This Saturday is our monthly Men’s Breakfast. 8am at the Anglican Church. All men are welcome to come. The following Friday 31 October is our Flower Show in the Holbrook Sporting Complex. Doors open 11:30am, lunch served from 12. We thank God for the life of Beryl Semmler who died on Monday last week. Beryl was a true saint who devoted herself to loving God and loving others. She regularly served at the Harry Jarvis Wing, playing music and helping with feeding. She was a tireless helper at the Op-shop, was involved in nearly every church activity that ever happened, and was a good friend and support to many. She will be sorely missed, but we rejoice that she is now in her heavenly home through faith in Christ.

RED CROSSRED CROSSRED CROSSRED CROSS On Tuesday 7 October, Holbrook Red Cross members met in the Submarine Park to dedicate their Centenary tree, an Autumn Blaze maple. The tree and information plaque will mark the centenary of Red Cross in Holbrook. Local members are most appreciative of the assistance provided by Greater Hume Shire Council staff in planting the trees and arranging the plaque. President Beverley Cottrell welcomed Greater Hume Shire Council, Mayor Heather Wilton & Mr Ian Wilton, Zone 20 Representative Anne Knox, and Greater Hume Shire Council, Tourism and Promotions Officer, Kerrie Wise and local members, and the National Anthem was sung, followed by recital of the Red Cross pledge and Principles. After the dedication, all enjoyed afternoon tea at the CTC Meeting Room, and Anne Knox presented Mrs Diane Locke with a 30 years service award. Members are looking forward to their final meeting for this eventful year, which will be a Christmas break-up and luncheon at the home of President Beverley Cottrell, 11 Ford St., on Tuesday 18 November

HOLBROOK SHOWHOLBROOK SHOWHOLBROOK SHOWHOLBROOK SHOW With the local Holbrook Show less than 4 weeks away, now is the time to be wandering around the garden to start working out what may be available to enter in the floral or garden produce sections. There is usually a section for everyone to participate in—especially the kids. On the subject of the kids—your children, or grandchildren, are encouraged to become involved in entering something in their local show. They take enormous delight in choosing just the right flower or vegetable to enter under their own names. And there are opportunities for them to enter lamb’s wool in the fleece section, or the cookery and craft classes. The look of delight on their faces when they discover that they have won a ribbon and prizemoney to spend is worth all the effort. Horse schedules and the main show schedule are available from various locations around town, including the post office and newsagency. They have also been loaded onto the Holbrook website so are available electronically on www.holbrook.nsw.au. The accompanying photos were supplied by Jan Elder and were taken at the Holbrook Show during the 1970’s.

LITTLE BILLABONG CWALITTLE BILLABONG CWALITTLE BILLABONG CWALITTLE BILLABONG CWA There were a few changes to the executive at the Branch AGM last week, with Mrs Margaret Shaw taking on the role of President, while Mrs Tammy Williams and Mrs Kate Locke continued as the branch Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. We held our branch International Day during this meeting as well. Members had brought along Botswana dishes to share and Mrs Pat Pitzen spoke to us about the safari trip she and her husband, Mick, had taken through Botswana. Last Sunday, members assisted the Holbrook Hospital Auxiliary with providing lunches for the Open Garden Day. With the Holbrook Show approaching rapidly, members interested in providing items for the CWA Exhibit are asked to contact Mrs Kate Locke so that she can co-ordinate our entry. Next meeting will be at the Little Billabong Hall on Monday 17 November at 9.30am.

The cadets and staff from TS Albury held a fund raiser to raise funds to take 22 cadets including several local kids on a 10 day tall ship cruise in January, this was held at Holbrook IGA on Saturday 18th Oct and thanks to the generosity of the Holbrook citizens we raised $1900 on the day, the cost for the trip is $1200 per cadet so we are able to send 1 cadet just from the efforts of one fund raiser. Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) has been recognised for its commitment to employee health and wellbeing by being awarded the Albury Wodonga Chamber Business Award for Excellence in Workplace Health. It was the first year MLHD had entered the annual Chamber Business Awards and the LHD was one of five finalists in the category. Last year, MLHD launched a workforce wellbeing program, BeWell, and appointed a Wellbeing Manager to improve the health and wellbeing of its almost 5,000 employees. It was the first health district within NSW Health to introduce a dedicated resource to focus on staff health and wellbeing. BeWell initiatives include monthly health and wellbeing activities at all sites, a staff intranet page with health tools, a health calendar and resources. The introduction of BeWell has been very positively received by staff and management alike with the monthly initiatives widely embraced, “We know that healthier, happier staff are more productive which leads to more effective and cohesive teams, which in turn benefits our communities,” Ms Ludford said. Chief Executive Jill Ludford said the award also demonstrates to potential employees that the organisation supports and values staff health and wellbeing by providing a range of activities, resources and initiatives focusing on an individual’s psychological, social and physical wellbeing. The judging panel said: ‘MLHD has developed an outstanding Wellness program, ‘Be Well. It is a forward-thinking and passionate organisation with Wellness a high priority in everything it does’.

Lankey’s Creek Happy Hour It’s almost a year since the members of the Lankey’s Creek community started gathering for a casual get together on the first Friday of every month. There were a few reasons for starting these events, one being the bush fires earlier in the year. It was felt that there was a need for a space and platform for community to get together and discuss local issues such as use of the hall, the bush fire brigade and generally the wellbeing of our community members. The happy hour has proven to be a great success where even in the colder months we have had a regular attendance of up to 25 people. Generally we will have a food theme; for example we have had a couple of casserole nights, a soup night and a pie and sausage roll night. With the wood fire burning and some hot food the cold hall can become a welcoming venue for a social evening. We have also incorporated a fire brigade meeting which has attracted more community input, a talk by David Hunter on the Boorolong frog in Lankey’s Creek and surrounds and in general any topic can be discussed on the night. We hope to continue this gathering indefinitely and welcome all of the local community and those from further afield who would like to join in. Now that the warmer weather is on us we will be barbequing and enjoying the longer evenings. Next happy hour is on the 7th November at 6.30pm where we will discuss our Christmas gathering. All those who want to be involved in our community please come along.

THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA ALERTALERTALERTALERT Do you wheeze and sneeze during springtime? The next four weeks or so may be a greater risk time for people with asthma, according to Murrumbidgee Local Health District. Acting Director Public Health Alison Nikitas reminds all people who wheeze and sneeze during spring they could be at risk of an asthma event during a thunderstorm. The high risk time for thunderstorms and elevated pollen counts are predicted to be from 20 October to 17 November. Public Health will be monitoring thunderstorm activity and pollen count levels and issuing alerts at high risk times. Ms Nikitas said: “Thunderstorms can trigger asthma attacks even in people who have not been diagnosed with asthma before. People who have asthma or hay fever and who are allergic to pollens, particularly rye grass pollen, are at greatest risk.” “Anyone with diagnosed asthma should carry their asthma medication with them at all times during this high risk period,” she said. “If you have asthma, try to stay inside when the storms are around to avoid airborne pollen which may trigger an asthma attack.” “Thunderstorms cause pollen grains to explode and release fine particles; these fine particles can be inhaled into the lungs making even more people wheeze and sneeze,” Ms Nikitas said. Charles Sturt University has set up a SMS alert system when the pollen counts are high and thunderstorms are predicted. To register for this alert go to www.csu.edu.au/asthma . Alerts will also be sent from the Public Health Unit smartphone App (below). If anyone experiences breathing difficulties it is essential to seek medical help immediately. Breathing difficulties can be life threatening. In the event of an asthma emergency dial triple zero (000) immediately.

All previous records were broken. It was hot in the kitchen but with the smiling, hardworking volunteers nothing was a problem. Thank You Night. As a way of saying thank you we are inviting all those who helped in any way at Henty to come along for drinks and nibbles on Friday 24th October between 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Please RSVP to Judy at school. Hunter Galvin. Last week Hunter competed in the junior boys high jump (age group 8 to 10) at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Carnival. This carnival includes qualifying students from independent, Catholic schools and public schools from all of NSW. Hunter came an amazing 4th place – a great effort from a very talented young athlete. NSW Fire and Rescue Visit. Last Thursday all students at St Pat’s enjoyed a great day with the Holbrook branch of the NSW Fire and Rescue squad. They gave demonstrations of safety scenarios, fire safety and even a kitchen oil fire demonstration –hot oil being quite a blaze when you add water! Thanks Gavin and Matt. Super 8’s Cricket in Culcairn. A big day out was had at the Culcairn Super 8’s cricket on the first Friday back this term. Students from Years 3 to 6 travelled across and entered 2 teams in a round robin. Craig Allibon from Culcairn PS did a wonderful job organising the kids with games, and skills sessions on the side.

FOOTBALLFOOTBALLFOOTBALLFOOTBALL Now that the Football season has finished our next task is to hold our AGM to find some more dedicated people to help run our great club. Our continued viability has been made possible by a hard working team of volunteers. To be able to continue to provide this service we are looking for new members to help enhance the great work that is already being done. The Football club would like to see as many people as possible attend. This meeting is open to everyone.

TENNISTENNISTENNISTENNIS The Hume Tennis Association got its pennant season underway in hot weather and at the Holbrook courts there were 2 matches played. The Sect 2 Gold outfit hosted Walla Nth Walla with the result going down to the last sets with the visitors getting by just 2 games 75 to 73 games. Emma and Alyce Parker playing the higher grade played well and will only improve as the season goes on. In Sect 3 Holbrook Blue played Gerogery West and the only highlight was the first set which Holbrook won before going down against a pretty handy team 86 to 40 games. Sect 2 Green travelled to Table Top and good to see Anthony McKoy back on court for the club. The Brooker team managed to win 8 sets but went down 72 to 61 games. Sect 3 White made the trip to Howlong with several of the players moving up a grade from last season found the going a bit tough before going down comfortably. Players are reminded that there is a social hit up on Wednesday evenings from about 5 pm for anyone who wants to come along. Annual Subs can now be paid and these are $50 senior, $25 junior/student and $130 for a family. Saturday ball fees are $7 per player per match and players at home to bring a plate of afternoon tea.
