Since 1997 he has been a consultant in cross-cultural practical issues of all kinds confronting expatriate families resid-ing in France.

TAXATION OF CAPITAL GAINS ON REAL ESTATEOwners of real estate in France wonder, and rightly so, how much in taxes they would pay if they sold. The calculation ba-sis and net final tax rate change so often that fiscal experts and notaires are just about the only professionals who can really keep up with them. There are two things I can say about this today, however. Right now, the tax rate, everything included, is about 50% for non-resident owners. Based on what I know of France, I cannot see the reg-ulation excluding the sale of the primary residence being changed. The length of time and the definition of the pri-mary residence might change, to fight abuse of this status, but not the exemption itself. I con-sider the rest unknown, since it is not reasonable to suppose the current rules are permanent.

OBTAINING THE CARTE VITALE AS A NON-RESIDENTIt is now possible for French retirees who live outside France to retain or even obtain the Carte Vitale. Previously, the national healthcare cov-erage was only for people re-siding in France. I know many people who keep their cards after moving out of France and use them when they are in France. The system does not block the transaction, and the administration never asks for proof of residency such as a carte de séjour after a few years in the system. This latest change only concerns retir-ees getting French pensions. The coverage lasts for the rest of their lives. This option is also open to people paying into the Caisse des Français de l’Etranger (CFE), a special system allowing people living outside of France to continue to contribute to the French social system. Their request should be sent to CPAM d’In-dre-et-Loire.

THE DEFINITIVE EXEMPTION OF NON-FRENCH INCOME FROM CSG AND CRDSCSG and CRDS are taxes im-posed on all income earned in France. For earned income they are collected as part of the so-cial charges, either mentioned on the employee pay slip or included in the social charg-es for self-employed people. For all other types of income, notably investment portfolio income, the tax office sends a CSG-CRDS bill after all income is declared and the amount of taxes has been calculated.

The tax office has not taken into consideration the situation of foreign unearned income and has issued tax bills related to CSG-CRDS on such income. It was always possible to contest the bill and eventually have it declared void. But many people did not know this and assumed that they had to pay it.

The European Court of Justice ruled on February 26th 2015 that in so acting, the French tax office was illegally collect-ing money that was not owed and was defrauding people. The French government should reimburse these taxes, and one would hope that the software used to calculate them will be modified so it can take into consideration the origin of un-earned income.

Following the ‘Win a Study’ competi-tion in the October issue of Expatriates Magazine, American portait artist Moe Delaitre has been working closely with competition winner Donna Heryawan and her daughter Harper. After 4 live sessions and 2 months the study is com-plete. Speaking of the study, Heryawan commented, “ I can’t believe she did this in just two months”.

The competition asked contestants to submit a photograph along with the rea-son it’s special. When looking through the entries, Donna’s submission struck Moe for its honesty:

“Being a mother is something I was not prepared for both emotionally and phys-ically. I struggled for more than a year to feel that extraordinary love that everyone speaks of. Sure I loved my daughter from the minute I knew I was carrying her. But that extra all consuming love I could not comprehend.

I spoke to my daughter all the time, sang to her, was conscious of all my behaviours in front of her because I knew she would emit into the world whatever I invested into her in these early years. For most of the time, I felt like I was talking to a brick wall, not sure if she was registering

anything. Between trying not to go mad from being a constant audience-less one man show as well as battling the fatigue from all the sleepless nights I found myself asking when being a mother stops being such a thankless gig. When would I feel “that” love?

One afternoon I panicked as I had not heard a peep out of my daughter for over 5 minutes. Silence usually means something has broken or there was a mess I had to clean or my daughter was hurt. Rushing from room to room, I found her facing the open glass doors seated on her chair, wear-ing my cardigan and softly singing “dodo l’enfant dort” as she cradled her doll.

In that moment, I knew that she did take notice of those countless days and nights where I would be seated in front of a win-dow cradling her. She was paying atten-tion to the song I always sang to her. Most of all I realised she was able to feel past all my fatigue and despair and find the love I had for her. As she turned around to face me, encapsulating all the calmness that I wish I had as a mother, I finally felt it.”

New expat radio station launched by british expat

The long-awaited arrival of Expat Ra-dio is finally here. British expat DavidHailwood launched the station on March 21st. Specifically targeting the English-speaking community across France, David has big plans for the station including a women’s morning, funny stories, the movie show, pest control, special requests and agony aunt segments, as well as music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Early signs are looking positive for the station and-David’s light-hearted comedy certain-ly gives an English expat the feeling they are listening to a station back home. ADDAMS FAMILY IS NEXTAmateur anglophone theatre group ‘International players’, a group com-posed of 70 members have set a date for their latest production - ‘The Add-ams Family’, a family-friendly, fun musical comedy, promising to deliver lots of music and comedy.

The show will be performed 5 times in Le Pecq from May 21st to May 22nd. Standard tickets cost 20€. More information is available on www.internationalplayers.co.uk.

first edition of the Paris FringeA festival of international theatre in Eng-lish, will take place from Monday, May 23 to Sunday, May 29, 2016 in Paris’ 9th ar-rondissement. The festival features both international work and France-based companies with a focus on innovative ap-proaches to theatre, and an emphasis on contemporary themes. Paris Fringe is or-ganized by a team of international theatre makers based in France, led by artistic di-rectors Dom Douglas and Reka Polonyi.

“There are now fringe festivals in major cities such as New York, Sydney, Am-sterdam and Prague,” says Douglas, “but Paris had yet to establish a festival of its own to welcome work in English. We established the Paris Fringe to provide a collaborative space for international and local artists working in English to present their work here in the French capital, and help promote international collaboration and understanding through innovative theatre.” www.parisfringe.org

Hosted by Suzette Doña-Riego, this year’s Expat Talent show kicked off with stand-up comedy from two professional comedians - Sebastian Marx, whose segment “Made in the USA” runs on the French TV channel D8, and British comedian Luke Thompson who costars in a two-man show entitled “Sorry We’re English” at the Paname Art Café. Their acts featured amusing anecdotes about life in France as seen from the expat point of view, which, for obvious reasons, appealed to the multicultural audience and soon had every-

one entering into the spirit of the show.

They were followed by 14-year-old Filipino Louis John Velas-co, who took to the stage as the evening’s first contestant. Returning for the second year running, the panel of judges, comprised producer & public-ity manager Florian Bartsch, Jazz singer Keri Chryst, and actress/filmmaker Lisa Jacobs. They provided constructive critique of each performance and gave their individual votes for each act. A fourth vote was reserved for audience mem-bers, who held up a yellow card to vote for their favourite

performers. The additional 10 points for a majority audience vote soon became critical for performers looking to win the competition.

“It’s one of those rare occa-sions when nudity is justi-fied!” said judge Keri Chryst of participant Yuvnish Nar-rain who stunned the crowd with his magic, after remov-ing his shirt to reveal an ace of spades drawn on his chest. The evening had plenty of oth-er surprises in store, and per-formers were not the only ones

Attendees were all invited to en-ter the various raffles running t h r o u g h o u t the evening, for the chance to win some great prizes generous-ly donated by the event’s sponsors.

France to study and teach dance. “I’ve been dancing since I was a child,” she said. She now runs a Hip-hop class in Paris.

level: Annette Cu, ballerina, used several props in-cluding an umbrel-la to tell a story to the soundtrack of “Memoirs of a Gei-sha”. The judges’ advice was to re-place the umbrella with a Japanese parasol to tell the tale in a more co-hesive way.

The talent show also had its share of singers such as Kei Haruna,

a professional recording artist and Pierre, a rapper from Miami who performed dressed in a business suit. He impressed the judges and audi-ence members with his overwhelm-ing stage presence which he used to his advantage keeping the audience’s

attention in the instrumen-tal delay before he started

rapping. As the judges pointed out, not all performers have the spontaneity to fill a “blank” in their act like that.

lights was served by the comedic geni-

us of Mohammed El Ko-rek. This Lebanese comedian

was given a standing ovation for his funny rhymes about Lebanese food and electricity shortages, which won him third place in the show – a great comeback after coming 17th last year. “I’m just so happy to be back,” he said, “I put a lot of effort in.”

Second place was shared by ballroom dancers Arnel & Kay-cee who gave a dramatic, theat-rical performance with intense choreography.

However, it was Subarna Gan-guly who lit up the stage and enchanted everyone with her charismatic dance perfor-mance. Dressed in oriental costume with jingling bells sashed around her hips and a beautiful, infectious smile on her face, she danced to an in-fusion of Indian classical and Egyptian belly dance. Subarna said that she had not danced for many years, but she overcame her stage fright in an inspiring comeback, which won her first place in the competition. “I love to dance... For the last few years I’ve been feeling I’ve lost a part of me,” Ganguly said of her time spent away from the stage, “But tonight I proved to myself I can still do it.”

Subarna closed the show with a finale dance to enthusiastic applause from the internation-al audience who had really en-joyed a great evening’s enter-tainment.

The Standard Athletic Club, Par-is’ premier international Eng-lish-speaking sports and social club, is, as stated on its website, “the perfect place for all the family to play sports casually or competitively or just relax and enjoy the social life.”

Founded in Paris in 1890 by a group of young Britons who wanted to play sport together, the club moved to its current location in the Forest of Meu-don in 1922 where it now welcomes over 1000 members, offering adults and children a wide range of sports and games facilities including : crick-et, football, golf, Pilates, yoga, tennis, fitness, bridge and snooker.

The club regularly organizes social and sporting events, and Expatriates Magazine was kindly invited to attend an exclusive fundraising evening in the presence of six times world snook-er champion Steve Davis OBE.

Roland Tchertoff, former club Vice President and Eurosport commenta-tor, welcomed guests to the club house which had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. The evening began with cocktails and an opportunity for club members and their guests to so-cialize and meet Steven Davis. Steve told us how much he is enjoying life, now that he can devote more time to his personal interests which include

progressive rock music and real ales. By his own admission, it’s as if he’s “living life in reverse” having spent his younger years in such serious training to play snooker at world class level.

The sporting part of the evening then kicked off with a one frame match between Steve and sixteen-year-old Gauvain Bazin. Gauvain admitted to feeling nervous before the match - it’s not every day a newcomer gets to play a world champion - but there were no nerves once play started. Steve Davis did an excellent job of making every-one feel at ease. A real entertainer, he provided his own running commen-tary throughout with remarks such as, “People often ask what I’m thinking when I’m waiting my turn, watching the other player. I’m usually thinking miss, miss.”

After the match Steve declared “That’s the best I’ve played in 10 years!” More seriously, he had admitted earlier in the evening that whilst there is a part of playing at his level that is “like rid-ing a bike” he still has to train regu-larly before important matches, be-cause he can’t risk finding himself in a situation he isn’t prepared for. Ste-ve’s manager, Mukesh Parmar, who has also managed current world N° 1 player Mark Selby, told us that whilst snooker may seem a relaxing sport to the spectator, it requires tremendous technical skill and concentration and players have to be in very good shape both physically and psychologically to

play at a professional level.

Steve then played a ‘best of three frames’ match against Stéphane Ochoiski, France’s leading player and fervent advocate of snooker in France. Other highlights included the award-ing of tournament prizes to club play-ers, an auction for snooker cues and a jeroboam of champagne autographed by Steve Davis, and Steve showing the younger snooker players how to do some very cool trick shots. It was great to see his passion and enjoyment of the sport being shared with a new generation of players. The evening concluded with friendly team match-es between Steve and other club mem-bers.

The event had aimed to promote snooker at the club, snooker in gen-eral and snooker in France in particu-lar. Organiser Roland Tchertoff felt it had been “A huge success” adding “It was a great pleasure to see lots of non-snooker playing members at-tending the event and enjoying the evening.”

PARIS Mobilizes 905,000 euros to support inde-pendant cinemas36 independent cinemas, mainly classified as art houses, will receive finan-cial aid from a funding pool of 905,000€ from the City of Paris, enabling them to continue and increase their share of cultural activities in their respective neighbour-hoods.

a 2016-2020 plan to de-velop hives in ParisAn ambitious plan for the development of bee hives and pollinating insects in Paris has been announced. This will consist of a series of actions taken by the city from 2016-2020. Paris al-ready has around 700 hives, including 143 hives located on government buildings. Four areas will be prioritized for development, with the aim to create a favourable environment for pollinating insects. New apiaries are to be installed on public and private buildings and the city will facilitate the sale of honey and related products, and better inform Parisians. The City of Paris will thus increase the nectar and pol-len resources, mobilize mu-nicipal directions but also businesses and associations to identify new locations to expand hives and develop a brand “Miel de Paris”.

The reopening of Paris MonumentThe Colonne de Juillet in ‘Place de la Bastille’ will re-open to the public in 2018. Unfortunately the 200 stairs to the top of the tower will remain closed as modern safety standards cannot be met.

EURO 2016 FAN ZONEThe Euro 2016 organising committee and the City of Paris will create a public space especially dedicated to fans throughout Euro 2016. The Fan Zone will accommo-date 120,000 people located on the Champ-de-Mars, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. The Euro 2016 anthem will be created and performed by French DJ David Guetta. A performance is planned for 9th June at Champ-de-Mars.

Why did you decide to launch your Storytelling Evenings in June 2014?I have been an expat for most of my life, the last 14 years here in Paris. What triggered the launch was, to use the French expression, a “concours de circonstances”. Moving into a larger apartment allowed me to welcome guests chez moi (tapping into my love for en-tertaining and meeting new people), as well as to cook (de-signing menus inspired from my travels), and more impor-tantly, to provide entertain-ment around storytelling…..my passion.

What typically happens dur-ing a Storytelling Evening?Once a month, usually on a Saturday evening, guests ar-rive, mingle and dine infor-mally over a four course meal and wine. The cuisine varies, tailored to the theme of the evening or to the storyteller’s preference or nationality. This part of the evening gives guests

an opportunity to get to know each other and meet the story-teller. After dining, guests are seated and settle into the sto-rytelling part of the evening. However, before the storyteller takes center stage, each guest responds to a question relat-ed to the theme. This could be their favorite rock star, opera, magic trick, jazz musician or other. Following this warm up the storyteller begins. The format varies and could be a multimedia presentation, an informal fireside-chat-like set-ting or an interview scenario. Delightful surprises are often woven into their narratives such as back flips (trapeze art-ist Imre Bernath), magic tricks (magician Owen Lean), songs (Keri Chryst), jokes (come-dian David Martin), and act-ing techniques (voice coach Vernice Klier). Coffee and a sumptuous dessert are served during a Q & A. After the wrap up guests linger to converse with the storyteller and, if in-spired, play the piano and sing.

Entertain, Educate, Inspire, Captivate, Amuse, Enlighten, Enthrall - are the keywords that best describe the Sto-rytelling Evenings held chez Bernadette Martin. These are evenings where storytelling enthusiasts gather to mingle, dine then listen to a storyteller who may be a musician, artist, actor, magician, singer, dancer, au-thor, entertainer, designer, chef or photographer. At-tendees and storytellers are mostly expats from all walks of life whose common thread is a desire to hear a good story, and share an amazing meal and a convivial evening together.

What topics are covered?With 25 evenings to date since 2014, I have welcomed over 500 guests where the scope of topics has included art, mu-sic, travel, cuisine, lifestyle, re-cycled art, photography, mindfulness, horse therapy, Picasso, angels, architecture, Coco Chanel, Bollywood, Hol-lywood, opera, Jazz, street per-formance and more.

Where do you find the story-tellers?Some approach me having heard of these events. However, for the most part they are peo-ple I know well. An example is my good friend Ayke Agus a world class pianist, violinist and author of Heifetz as I Knew Him. She will feature when she passes through Paris this year. Others are recommended or people I meet here in Paris. I have the reputation as the “net-working queen” with affilia-tions and membership across a range of professional and

cultural associations such as Toastmasters, Professional Women’s Network, Arts & Are-na, American University Clubs of France, Paris Women of Suc-cess, Project Management In-stitute, my alumni association Thunderbird School of Glob-al Management and others. Events are where I often meet potential storytellers, where my innate curiosity to hear other people’s stories prompts me to ask if they would like to feature.

What can guests expect from an evening?For 28 euros guests will be entertained by a storyteller, preceded by a dining expe-rience with wine and a meal (cuisines have featured Italian, Lebanese, Japanese, English, Indian, French, American and fusion) and meet other inter-esting people from all walks of life and nationalities in a pri-vate apartment in Paris.

What brought you to Paris and how long have you been living here? I have been in France since 1988. I met my husband while we were both pur-suing MBAs from UMass Amherst. At first we had planned to settle in the US but the craziness of NY of the moment made us consider another life and so I came here and I clearly don’t regret it.

Are there any things you miss from “home”?The “things” are less important with time. At first I missed Skippy peanut butter and English muffins and bagels but now you can find all of that here and I buy them... sometimes . So I guess they weren’t that important to me. I miss the Christmas spirit: the sounds, the smells, the anticipation other than just pressure to give gifts. I miss the American enthusiasm and malt, es-pecially I miss the sun in the winter. People used to ask me how Paris was in the winter since most knew Paris in the spring and summer. My answer was al-ways: grey. My memories of East Coast w i n t e r s

were of cold and snow but much sun-nier.... But maybe that was just my per-ception.

Do you consider yourself to be Ameri-can, French or both?I have both nationalities and I feel both. My youth was in the US and most of my adulthood in France and I feel truly both French and American. In my case it might be a little "special" as my dad was from Vallée d'Aoste in the north of Italy and my maternal grand-parents were from Ireland so the ties were there. What made you decide to become a pro-fessor and how long have you been teaching?I became a professor in an interna-tional business school in 1986 where I taught Marketing in English. The environment was very intercultural and fascinating and it was the perfect career for a mom with small children. As the children grew up I began work-ing more which was the perfect rhythm for me.

Where do you teach and what do you teach?

I teach Marketing at ESCE (Ecole Supérieur de

Commerce Extérieur) International Busi-

ness School. I teach classes on different marketing topics such as Branding and Customer R e l at i ons h ip Management, C o n s u m e r Behavior and Marketing Re-search as well as Fundamen-tals of Market-ing.

Why did you choose to specialize in mar-keting?I think it was always apparent, it was intuitive for me. I have always been cu-rious about consumers and how they react, why they buy, what motivates them. For me marketing is a state of mind rather than functions and it all has to do with people and their needs.

What has being a professor taught you?Being a professor has given me insight into the young generation. From a selfish point of view being a professor allows me to be perpetually curious to keep up to date with this domain in constant evolution so that I can share and help guide my students. Today’s young generation is totally connected and that keeps you on your toes! How-ever, being connected is not enough. What I feel that my role as a professor must be, is to help them to fine tune their natural curiosity helping it ma-ture by discovering a solid marketing culture and developing their critical eye, what I call “benevolent marketing”.

Is there any difference in your teaching style for French students, as opposed to international?Absolutely none. I try to clearly ex-plain what is expected for everyone, no exceptions. One challenge in the French system is that students don’t buy textbooks. As an American it was a totally different way that classes needed to be built to motivate students to read outside of classes. I don’t give students a lot of outside reading to do, but what I do give they know that I expect it to be done and they don’t disappoint me.

Do you have any advice to those seeking to have a career in marketing?Careers in marketing can be so varied that it is very difficult to give specific advice. As I said before, for me mar-keting is a state of mind. For me mar-keters are those who are curious and passionate, whether it be about a new packaging or technology. The common denominator is the same.

Your scHolarship meant leaving your home coun-try ALGERIA at the age of 17, can you describe the emotions you went through?It was exciting! But I was conscious of the fact that I’d be responsible for myself for the first time in my life. At the time, I didn’t think it would be a long term move so didn’t over-think it. For me, I was simply going to discover a new country. My parents on the other hand were very apprehensive, it was difficult for them and my brother and sister as well. That was the first time the family was separated.

COULD YOU SPEAK ENGLISH WHEN YOU LEFT? My English was very limited and this was a big challenge. I was communicating through hand ges-tures which only added to the emotions I was going through. I couldn’t express myself but this fuelled my desire to progress. It took me a good couple of months before I could hold a decent conversation, a little longer to understand certain accents. Later I enrolled at Cambridge University to perfect my English before applying to study pharmacy.

Where did you study pharmacy?I studied at the University of Nottingham as it’s an esteemed faculty in the field of pharmaceuticals, which is where I obtained two degrees; the first in 2007 when I became a pharmacist and the second, a PhD in biophysics and surface analysis cour-tesy of two scholarships from the university and BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Reseach Council, UK).

how do the two countries compare in terms of education?Comparing both academically is difficult as I ex-perienced the two systems at different stages of my education. However, in terms of higher edu-cation, the two countries have different levels of investment, technology and means.

HOW HAVE BOTH COUNTRIES SHAPED YOU?Both countries have their own particularities and both are dear to my heart for different rea-sons. My childhood was spent in Algeria, my childhood friends are there and my background was defined by my upbringing there. My time in England defines another side of me, it’s where I grew into adulthood and had an enormous in-fluence over my adult values, and for the most part, the personality I have today.

What have you learnt along the way? Growing up and living in three different coun-tries is a real blessing. It’s allowed me to be myself, understand where I come from and ultimately where I want to be. I’ve been able to keep my own values which is a mixture of three countries. I’ve seen the world different-ly and am open to the world and the cultures I encounter. Algeria, England and France are culturally, socially and economically very dif-ferent, the standard of living, the relationship

to religion and the openness to the world varies. I like to think I’ve adopted the best of each country in my own personality and values.

Where has it all led? What are you doing in Paris?I am working at Pierre Fabre Dermatology as a Regu-latory Affairs Pharmacist. My work consists of obtain-ing marketing authorisation of medicines worldwide and bringing the product into the market through product lifecycle management. I make sure that the quality, safety and effectiveness of the products we put into market are well within the current standards and respect the local regulation for each country the prod-uct is commercialised in.

As a pharmacist, what differences have you no-ticed between France and England?One of the major differences is the length of study to become a pharmacist. In England it’s 4 years, here in France it’s 6! In England you have to register with a governing body (General Pharmaceutical Council) and pass an exam to begin practicing in the field. The content of the degree in England is much more ori-ented to the profession, compared to France where its very theoretical and less clinical, until you specialise.

And how about in the work domain?I’ve worked as a community pharmacist in both coun-tries. The role of the pharmacist is quite similar, how-ever they function in a completely different manner. Community pharmacies in France are independent whilst in England they are chains belonging to large multinational companies. The actual role of a phar-macist is more clinically oriented in England where many more services are offered, such as travel and flu vaccination, there is also much more patient contact. A pharmacist in England can also prescribe medicine, usually working with a GP (general practitioner) who issues the prescription. This doesn’t happen in France.

The field of pharmacy follows slightly different legisla-tions in both countries. For example, there’s a contin-ual debate in France over certain medicines being sold in supermarkets. In England, buying medicine from a supermarket is the norm and very well regulated. However the industry as a whole is very similar as it follows the harmonised EU regulations and therefore the same job undertaken in England is exactly the same in France, although this is not the case for com-munity and hospital pharmacies.

Is one system better than another?Each system has its advantages and inconvienienc-es. Both are well oriented towards patient access to medicine and maintaining a high level of healthcare. However there is an ongoing debate. Patient access to certain medicines from the general list is slightly hin-dered in France, mostly in my opinion due to the fear of losing the pharmacy monopoly... What’s important is patient safety and the patient’s access to medicine at the time of need. The ultimate question is whether it matters if medicines are sold from a supermarket pharmacy or a high street pharmacy.

As far a turning points go, Abdennour’s couldn’t be clearer. at the age of 17 his exam scores were among the highest in the country. an achievement that didn’t go unnoticed, he was offered a scholarship to further his education overseas, his decision shapeD the rest of his story...

Finding Soul

In The Metro

You cannot miss Marvin Parks. First impressions are of an exu-berant, joyous, booming person-ality - and that’s before he sings! For the last two years his soulful voice has filled the corridors of various Parisian metro stations touching hundreds of commuters.

Born and raised in Baltimore in the tradition of the American gospel choir singers, Marvin started singing at the age of five. “Our whole family was raised in the church. I lived with my grandmother and my mom. We went to church every Sunday and I sang on the choir. Going to choir practice every Saturday for years was my version of soccer practice.” His mother was a big fan of Motown, gospel and soul music and, yes, she named him after Mar-vin Gaye. Marvin grew up listening to his mother’s music collections and he knew all the entertainers, but he had a revelation when he saw a documentary on Nat King Cole: “Here I am, fifteen years old, on my grandmother’s sofa, seeing him singing ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ on television, in a suit. Tall dapper, debonair… I didn’t say ‘I want to be a famous singer’, I said ‘I have to learn those songs, I want to be like him.’ He left such an impression on me. His voice was absolutely flawless, like I’d never heard before.”

In high school Marvin took part in a competition called ACT-SO. “It’s like an educational and cultural Olympics. That was the first time I’d ever sung in public outside of church. I did that and I won first place singing ‘Nature Boy’. After that I just knew that I wanted to be a Jazz singer.”

He went on to win many other compe-titions and in 2007 he moved to New York to sing backing for Jazz cabaret singer Natalie Douglas. “I was always singing, but when you’re trying to get by you have jobs, and I’ve had plenty of them!” After one particularly frustrat-ing job experience Marvin decided to take a vacation and he came to Paris.

He originally planned to stay three weeks, but two weeks into his stay he decided he wouldn’t be going back “In-stinctively it just felt like this was where I needed to be.” The first time he sang in the metro was when an ATM swallowed his debit card and he had no money. “I thought, the only thing I know how to do is sing. So I took a bowl and I went to the metro and I started singing ‘Smile’ over and over again. I wasn’t really try-ing to make money I was just trying to get five euros to buy myself some pasta for dinner.” People would stop to talk to him and ask him questions about him-self and about the songs. For Marvin it was much more than just performing, “I saw it as an opportunity to reach out to people.”

Following that experience, Marvin de-cided to audition for a permit to sing in the metro on a regular basis. “ If you can sing in the metro you can do it an-ywhere.” One of his regular haunts is the station La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle where he likes the hallways’ acoustics. “I’ve been here so often I have a rela-tion with a lot of the people who pass through; people going to work, going to school, even the controllers know me by name now and the guy who cleans the hallway at night. Sometimes I wear a suit and tie, and that confuses peo-ple!”

Today, despite singing in clubs, and even having signed a record deal with an Italian label, he admits he still enjoys the metro experience. “I get to reach out to everyday people. It’s not making me rich, but it is making me a name. I wish I could package that moment when someone stops and turns around. When I get to shake hands with people, look them in the eye, introduce myself to them and make a one on one appeal to them to follow me on social media...They won’t forget me.”

How do you make a case for some-thing? Science, a method that looks at evidence systematically, is one way to do this. Science starts by suspending assumptions about what it studies, putting opinions and hy-potheses to the test, and backing up your beliefs with empirical evidence. Following up on last month’s article on meditation, this article contin-ues to argue for why meditation is good for you. Since our society puts greater emphasis on the material and physical over the mental and spiritual, I’ll discuss the practical, physiological and social benefits of meditation.

Let’s start by looking at the effects meditation has on the brain and nerv-ous system, which control the whole body. Thanks to MRI (magnetic reso-nance imaging) we’re able to have a de-tailed view into the brain. Brain scans demonstrate a significant difference in those who do meditation vs. those who do not. (Biological Psychiatry, 1/16) Studies find that the brain can literally change itself, a process called neuro-plasticity that was once considered im-possible in adults. Meditation is a very effective way to enable this. Researchers have found that long-term meditation changes the inner circuitry of the brain (Univ. of Wisconsin), and increases thickness in areas of the brain linked to attention and sensory input (Harvard Gazette, 2/06). Meditation is like calis-thenics for the brain! The type of meditation often used in studies is known as “mindfulness”, a common practice in Buddhism. In this practice the mind or attention is con-tinually brought to the present time. The present moment is where think-ing and drifting into reverie happen. Scans show that areas of the brain that are related to stress and focusing show

increased activation. The left prefron-tal cortex, which is associated with positive emotions and “happiness”, is particularly active during meditation. Different parts of the brain communi-cate more, which increases integration and efficiency. The more integrated the brain is the better it works. When the mind becomes “one-pointed” and focused, the nervous system balances, parts synchronize and positive changes in the body happen spontaneously. We all experience stress. Society doesn’t make it easier to handle. Stress and poor diet are the root of most health problems. Stress is a result of the body’s flight-or-fight mechanism, part of our biological evolution. Studies of medita-tors show an increase in the activity and density in the part of the brain known as the amygdala, which is associated with stress. Here gray matter was reduced in size. The hippocampus, associated with empathy and memory, showed an in-crease in gray matter. The control group who did not meditate and only engaged in relaxation, manifested no compa-rable changes. (Psychiatry Research: Neuroimmaging 1/11, Vol. 191) Even though relaxation is healthy and enjoy-able, meditation is even more effective for the body-mind! Hypertension (high blood pressure) is known as the “silent killer”. Many people have it and don’t know because they don’t show any symptoms. Stud-ies show high risk patients who medi-tate can cut the risk of heart attacks in half compared to those who only used lifestyle changes. Cortisol, known as the “stress hormone”, plays a key role in everything from immune response, bone formation and sleep to insulin lev-els and inflammatory response. Corti-sol levels increase under stress; medita-tion was found to reduce cortisol levels. Blood level markers also show a lower indication of inflammation, a common underlying cause of diseases like arthri-tis and Cardiovascular disease (CVD, atherosclerosis). Since inflammation increases in CVD, meditation along

with the right diet can play a key role in prevention and treatment. A recent meta-analysis looked at the ef-fects of mindfulness-based stress reduc-tion (MBSR) on the health of various populations with cancer, heart disease, depression, and anxiety and for those looking for better ways to cope with stress (J. of Psychosomatic Research, 57/1). Findings show that meditation can improve how people cope emotion-ally and physically with distress, serious disorders and disabilities. It is clear that meditation can aid those with depres-sion, anxiety, and physical pain. The effects of meditation are similar for both the physically and mentally ill. Those with bipolar disorder and de-pression had as many benefits as those with hypertension (Eur. Psychiatry, 9/2010). Participants recovering from depression were less likely to relapse by half when conventional treatment was supplemented by meditation (Am J. Hypertension, 12/2009). There is a popular notion that medi-tation is only for spiritual purposes or escaping life, but it is also a great way of affirming life and increasing your par-ticipation. Meditation clearly heightens awareness, improves mood and helps develop equanimity and emotional bal-ance so you’re not so controlled by your mind and emotions. Instead of resort-ing to anger or even violence, medita-tion can help people control themselves so they can work out their personal and relational problems more effectively. It also fosters greater emotional intelli-gence. Developing any new routine can be challenging, but starting with a short 10 to 15 minute meditation the same time each day is the best approach. Even if you never increase the time it can yield great benefits; can you find something else that has so much return with so little effort? It can positively impact all aspects of your life. EM

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:Crush 2 cloves of garlic, and place together with the lamb in a container or plastic zip lock bag, add salt and pepper, then set aside. Mix the remaining ingredients in a food pro-cessor until you get the desired texture. Fry the lamb chops in a very hot pan, 2-3 minutes on each side for medium. DIRECTIONS:In a mixing glass put 3 cubes of ice, add a drop of Angostura and then pour the rye whiskey along with red vermouth. Stir gently until the sides of the glass are icy. Put a cocktail cherry in the cup and pour, making sure to filter through the strainer.
