Not everyone gets to spend his weekdays dipping balloons into

liquid nitrogen at -320 degrees Fahrenheit or experimenting with highly reactive alkali metals, but that’s just the life KC chemistry instructor Dave Bugay lives.

Bugay, born in Philadelphia, Pa., earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Florida State University. After receiving his teaching certificate, he spent three years teaching at a high school in Florida. Bugay made the move to Texas when he enrolled in grad school at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his master’s degree.

“I wasn’t ever interested in doing research,” Bugay said about coming to teach at KC as opposed to staying at UT teaching labs. Now, after 36 years, he has made the decision to retire.

“At 65, it’s just kind of the magic thing,” he said.

Aside from a few developmental math classes early in his time at KC, Bugay’s sole teaching position has been in the chemistry department. In addition to instructing classes, he has been in charge of the East Texas Regional Science Fair for the past 10 years. He also began a forensic science day camp for eighth and ninth graders which was last hosted in 2009. The week-long camp provided campers with the opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations and in

collecting and analyzing evidence.When he’s not in the classroom,

the chemistry instructor can be found on the trails. Along with duplicate bridge and baseball games, Bugay enjoys backpacking. This summer he is even planning to guide a backpacking excursion of his own.

When his last year at KC is over, Bugay and his wife, who retired from Tyler Junior College in December, have plans of moving to Denver, Colo., to be closer to their son.

“We hope that when we get to Colorado, we can maybe start a garden,” Bugay said.

He is also looking forward to the Alaskan cruise he and his wife will be taking in June and learning how to snow ski.

Being told you cannot do something because of your size can be discouraging,

but KC sophomore linebacker Charles Woods used that as motivation.

“As an under-sized linebacker it is pretty hard to get a scholarship,” said Woods. “But putting my heart into it and having loved ones by my side helps a lot.”

Standing at 5-foot-11 weighing 195 pounds, Woods was named National Junior College Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year for the 2012 season. He was also named Southwest Junior College Football Conference Most Valuable Player and First Team All-American.

“All of my hard work is finally paying off,” Woods said.

Woods was born in Humble, but explored the roads of Texas as a young child. His parents divorced when he was 2 years old and he stayed with his mother. Every chance he had on the weekends, he would spend at his dad’s house in Houston. Not being able to see his father as much prompted Woods to play football.

“My mom didn’t want me to play, but my dad was a football star in his younger days,” Woods said. “I played football so my dad could come see me play because he wasn’t around much and after we would hang out.”

At the age of 16, Woods moved in with his father and made it his permanent home after his mother got sick.

“We didn’t stay in one place. We were always moving,” Woods said. “It wasn’t the great life, but we made the best of it.”

Woods and his dad have a great relationship and he attended every game this past season except for two, the games against Northeastern Oklahoma and Trinity Valley Community College.

Woods said going through the struggle as a child makes him the person he is today. It is the reason why his goal in life is to help others. He is inspired by his family to be the best he can be and to succeed.

“I want to take care of my family. My mom and dad have always been there for me, and I thank them for that,” Woods said. “My mom is ill, my brother was killed in December and I want to be there for my nephew.”

This past December, Woods and his family faced a life-changing tragedy. His older brother, Joshua Woods, 22, was killed for a pair of Air Jordan sneakers. Joshua and his friend were followed after buying the newly released. Three men approached the two and demanded the shoes, but shots were fired before anyone could respond. Behind every career-driven leader there is someone who has encouraged them

along the way. One KC instructor who prides himself in teaching his classes the fundamentals of being successful in society is business administration and economics instructor Hugh Wink.

“I believe in a hand up and not a hand out,” Wink said.” The jobs are there if you have the training.”

Wink focuses on guiding his students in building a firm foundation through hard work.

“I try to teach my students to be prepared,” he said. “Playing life is real.”

He is constantly pointing out that it is better to earn the money rather than let the money be supplied by somebody else’s hard work. Wink “People are not hungry anymore,” Wink said.

In December, the unemployment rate in Texas showed 6.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“We still have a way to go to becoming a more efficient economy,” Wink said. “I don’t believe in extended unemployment.”

Unemployment is not the only obstacle America faces but also the use of technology which has crept up in the workforce. Wink calls it the brave new world.

To be qualified for more job opportunities, people should have the necessary skills for that trade and be diverse with what they can do.

Wink teaches his students that knowing how technology works is a perk in the world of business, but receiving an education cannot be overshadowed since learning is in everything we do.

Many times one must overcome many obstacles just to be considered for a job. Sometimes people focus so much around the negatives of the work force rather than embrace the positives. One negative issue is people focusing on the ethnicity of a person rather than paying attention to their ability to work.

Can the process of finding work be difficult?

According to Wink, it is difficult because people are uneducated.

Always teaching why education is

key when job hunting, Wink said, “I don’t want to hire to be equal; I want to hire someone who can get the job done.”

Wink structures his lessons around telling it straight to his students.

“The world is a struggle,” Wink said. “Don’t ask the question if you cannot handle the answer.”

He is particular about his teachings of hard work and prides himself on encouraging his students to always give 100 percent in everything they do.

“Life is a series of serious choices, some good and some bad,” Wink said. “If you want to make it, hard work is what it takes.”

Also familiar with Wink’s tips and techniques of teaching is business administration student Al Dixon, Marshall sophomore.

“One thing I have learned from Hugh Wink’s class is that nothing in life is free--that everything has a cost,” Dixon said. “He has influenced me to do my best. In order to succeed you have to put in the work for it.”

Dixon aspires to work as an accountant for a major cooperation.

“I plan to achieve that goal by continuing to take the necessary steps and classes to improve my skills, “Dixon said. “Receiving your education helps you adapt to the environment because it is always changing.”

Wink says people are not hungry anymore, but is this the case for everybody?

For Dixon, it is important for him to be successful because he does not want let down all of the people who have encouraged and supported him to succeed with his goals.

Dixon’s tips for looking for work consist of marketing your skills and doing the research over the job position.

“The more research and time you put in, the better the outcome,” he said.

Dixon has taken the tips and tools Wink has taught him and plans to take advantage of that knowledge and use it in the world of business.

Hard work has been the theme of what Hugh Wink has instilled in his students.

“I hope my students take from my classes that there is opportunity out in the world if you apply yourself,” Wink said. “Without the work there are no results.”

The KC Career Services program, located in the Student Support Building, provides students with career counseling, and information based on their major and future career options.

The program focuses on job-search tools and techniques that consist of creating resumes and cover letters, preparing for job interviews and creating portfolios and websites.

The motive is to “better equip students as they begin to seek employment,” said Patty Bell, career service and service learning director. “I’m never satisfied [with our programs’ results] because I’m always seeking for more improvement.”

Bell hopes that students will gain a strong sense of understanding of their career choices and be

polished when knowing what is expected of them on the job.

“The more prepared you are, the more confident you will be when seeking employment,” Bell said.

The process of finding work can depend on the field.

“Some careers have more job opportunities than others,” Bell said.

The career services website offers a career test to help guide people to understand and get a better view of what they might like as a career.

The career services program also helps teach these necessary job-finding tools to help students be efficient and successful in finding a job or career.

“We work closely with businesses, encouraging them to consider our students and alumni during their hiring process,” Bell said.
