Harvest

At the beginning of the month we had our harvest festival assembly, the children enjoyed learning about how our donations to the foodbank would help our local community . The foodbank were de-lighted with the generous amount of food which was donated, thank you very much.

Swimming

This month the children in years 2, 3 and 4 had a week of intensive swimming lessons, which has helped the children develop vital swim-ming skills and water confidence. The National Curriculum expectation is that by the end of Year 6 children are able to swim 25 meters without flotation aids, and in order to meet this expectation we would encour-age children to have addi-tional swimming lessons throughout the year outside school. The children really enjoyed developing their swimming skills and it is a very important life skill to have!

Nursey

Busy Bees have been learning the nursery rules and routines and how to keep the nursery clean and tidy. They are learning to do things for themselves, such as putting their own coats on and selecting their own resources for learning. Please practise letting your child be independent at home so they can have their photo on our nursery display, it’s this month’s value!

At story time the children have been developing their listening skills and have had fun joining in with action rhymes and counting games.

Dragonflies

In Dragonflies we have started to learn our phonics sounds and are learning to use those sounds to read and write simple words. We have also been practising writing our names using the correct formation with lowercase letters, learning that we only use a capital letter for the first letter of our name!

Dragonflies have particularly enjoyed developing their fine motor control by hammering nails into logs, learning to use tools safely and with control. In turn this will help develop their pencil control for writing.

A few reminders… Please can you send your child to school with a coat every day as we play out in all types of weather. Also for your child's safety please do not send them to school with earrings in their ears.

Thank you for your support!

Ladybirds The children in Ladybirds are enjoying all their learning and are discovering lots of interesting things about their bodies in Science and PSHE. In Learning for Life (PSHE) lessons they have found out about the importance of washing their hands. Mrs Aitchison put some non-toxic gel on the children’s hands and then shook hands with all of the children. When the lights were turned off and the UV lamp turned on, the children could all see the germs on their hands. The children then all washed their hands properly and checked again and the germs had all gone. Now the children in Ladybirds are very good at washing their hands so they don’t spread germs! Also in Science, the children learned all about their five senses. They ran some fun experiments, and especially enjoyed the one to test their sense of smell!

Butterflies Butterflies class had a wonderful time during their swimming lessons. They learnt numerous things includ-

ing walking in the water and swimming using a float on their front and back.

In topic, the children have been learning all about Florence Nightingale. They were fortunate enough to

have a special afternoon learning all about her. The children pretended to be soldiers fighting in the war

and nurses having to care for the wounded. They also scrubbed the classroom from top to bottom until it

was sparkling!

Beetles

This month, we have been learning more about the Ancient Egyptians—particularly what treasures they hid in their tombs! We even made our own Egyptian pharaoh necklaces.

We have also been learning about writing instructions and all the features we would need to include. These are going to help us write a recipe for a healthy smoothie that we are going to make in the next few weeks.

Ants

Earlier this month, Year 4 learnt about measuring accurately and converting measurements in Maths.

The children were surprised when arriving one morning to find that a giant had come to visit their classroom. The children enjoyed using their measurement skills to record how many cm, m and mm the giant measured - they also calculated the difference between different body parts!

Spiders

Spiders class have enjoyed a fun-filled trip to Winchester Science Museum, the children enjoyed a range of workshops including a visit to the planetarium. We learned some interesting facts about our solar system and even how to locate the north star.

Grasshoppers This month we have been lucky enough to have three different workshops to help with our learning. They have taught us a lot and been fun at the same time! The first two were 'Explore Learning' workshops. We had one maths session and one literacy session. In the maths session, we looked at creating packaging using nets. It was very helpful to plan our nets first, think about tabs we would need and then add them on after we had the whole net drawn.

The literacy session was about writing a persuasive advert for a holiday destination. We had a fact sheet to help us and we used techniques from our literacy lessons too! AFOREST helped us to make them ap-pealing to the public. We planned it and then wrote it out in the leaflet provided. Our final workshop was the the hands only CPR training from the St John's Ambulance service.

Finally, we were shown how to use a defibrillator safely. The instructons are in all of the boxes you see around town and all you have to do is follow the instruc-tions and stay back from the person once the machine is switched on! This workshop has given us the confidence to help someone in an emergency situation!

This month we have opened up the reading shed at break times and lunch times. We have created a timetable so that children know which learning councillors are taking care of the shed that day. This means that every break time and every lunch time, children can choose to sit in the reading shed—which even has bean bags—and read a book quietly or with a friend.

We are now starting preparations for Children in Need.

September: Friendship

October: Independence

November: Respect

December: Appreciation

Page 8

Our Values – Autumn Term

Friendship: September's value is friendship, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to have friends and how we can be a good friend.

Play with friends outside school.

Read ‘Harry Potter’ by J.K Rowling, ‘Charlottes web’ by E.B White or ‘Elmer and friends’ by David McKee

Independence: October’s value is independence, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Give children opportunities to be independent e.g. getting dressed independently, learning to tie their shoe laces and ties on they own, organising their school equipment

Forget perfection- Accept that children won’t do the task as well as you. Let them try to do things for themselves e.g. Making their own cereal, if the milk spills, show them how to clean it up with-out criticism and assure them it happens to everyone

Read ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett or ‘Nelson Mandela, Long walk to freedom’ by Chris Van Wyk.

Respect: November’s value is respect , some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to show good manners.

Encourage to help with recycling and discuss why we need to respect our environment

Read ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo ‘by Michael Rosen

Appreciation: December's value is appreciation, some sug-gestions to encourage this important value at home are:

Talk about people who are important to us and why we appreciate them.

Talk about people less fortunate than ourselves and think about how we could help them.

Read ‘Owl babies’ by Martin Waddell
