Principal’s Update
We have now reached the end
of the first term of this
academic year which has,
again, been extremely busy.
Both students and staff are
looking forward to a well
earned break.
Year 11 have sat their pre
public exams (PPEs) in all
subjects with Year 10 having
taken PPEs in English and RE.
Results will be available for
students on Friday 6 January –
Year 11 and Thursday 12
January – Year 10.
Some students in Year 9 have
been on a Murder Mystery trip
to St Vincent’s College and a
Careers Master Class at
Southampton University.
There have also been visits to
the theatre to see Blood
Brothers in Brighton and The
Wind in the Willows at the
Mayflower, organised by
English Department. Rock
challenge rehearsals continue
regularly under the direction of
Mrs Warner. If you are able to
help behind the scenes then
please contact Mrs Doyle for
further information.
The college held its inaugural
Firework Display in November
which was a huge success and
we have a provisional date in
the diary for a 2017 repeat on
Friday 3 November.
We would like to say a ‘big
thank you’ to the Friends of
Henry Cort who have recently
helped the college to purchase
a defibrillator, contributed to
our Craft Club and will be
helping us to purchase a new
bench. We appreciate their
continued support.
We look forward to welcoming
Miss Shuttleworth, Assistant
Principal, in January and will be
saying goodbye to Mr Gibson,
Science, at the end of this
term.

We also wish Mrs Durrant-Francis well as she
starts her maternity leave.
Congratulations to both Mrs Andrews and Mrs
Wheelwright who have now both had their babies.
We also look forward to the return of Miss
Sainsbury to Science in the spring term.
Road Safety: the immediate vicinity of the college
is extremely congested at the start and end of the
college day. Can we ask that everyone drives and
parks considerately. The car park nearest the main
gate is for staff parking and should not be used for
dropping off and picking up students. Students are
reminded about the importance of road safety
when walking or cycling and the need to wear
cycle helmets.
I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas
and new year.

Year 7 Basketball Team
Sporting
News
Girls Basketball
The Year 7 girls
basketball team did exceptionally
well at the central venue
tournaments, with the boys
finishing 1st and 2nd and the girls
finishing 2nd out of all local
secondary colleges.
Year 8 girls have only lost one
match all season. The girls have
done really well this half term,
managing to get at least 10 players
for each game, all of which are
really keen and eager to represent
the college. The season started
really well with two consecutive
wins against Brune Park and
Bridgemary on a large scale. The
girls were all so pleased! The last
two games have unfortunately
been a loss against Bay House and
Portchester, just missing out
through lack of defence and
aggression. Well done to you all,
you have been a credit to Henry
Cort and we are excited to see
what Year 9 Basketball brings for
you next year!
Year 9 girls are currently
undefeated! We are extremely
pleased with the year 9 girl’s
basketball team. Their attitude and
dedication to the team this year
has been amazing and this has not
gone unnoticed. As a result of this,
the girls are currently undefeated,
having won their 4 previous
matches to Portchester, Fareham
Academy, Cams Hill and
Bridgemary. Ellie Cherrington has
been the star of the team receiving
player of the match on several
occasions and scoring numerous
baskets over all 4 games. Well done
Girls!
Boys Basketball
Year 7 boys did amazingly well at
the central venue basketball
competition, with both Henry Cort
A and Henry Cort B making it
through to the final.
The Year 8 team have played 3
games and have only lost 1.
Portchester (A) WIN 8 – 10
Brune Park (H) LOST 24 – 10
Fareham Academy (H)
WIN 26 – 12
The Year 10 team are currently
undefeated. There has been strong
performances from Joe Bull, Ben
Randell and Dan Garnham who has
seen the team score an average of
28 points per game.
With one more fixture this week,
can the team go undefeated…
Team lists can be found on the
website in the sport news.
Cross Country
The Year 7 girls team came 4th in
the district team competition, with
Grace Park and Amber Murdoch
coming 2nd and 4th respectively.
The Year 7 boys team came 3rd
overall, with Billy Campbell
achieving a 1st place.
Football
The Year 9 football team went on a
strong cup run in the Hampshire
Cup rolling through opposition in
the early rounds. They made it to
the last 16 at Wyvern College.
Despite a superb strike from Joe
Farlow in the second half the teams
finished level at full time 2-2. The
match went straight to penalties. 3-
0 to the visitors.
Outstanding squad effort: Josh
Moors, Louie Wakefield, Joe
Farlow, Charles Higgs, Spencer
Hancock (C), Brandon Gee, Harry
Wilmot, Haydn Simmonds, Alex
Chivers, Kaiden Wright, Aidan
Smart, Will Bell, Jack Sherwood,
Will Steer and Alfie Birks.
Clubs
Attendance at clubs has been
brilliant this term, and we hope to
see it continue next year!

Daring House News
My first term as Daring House Progress
Leader has been very busy indeed. We
are very pleased to welcome our new
Tutors, Mme Vaissieres-Brien, Mme
Cuven, Mrs Brown, Mr Adeyemo, Mrs
Isted, Mrs Wilks and Mr Bagnell.
We are very proud to have a really
strong set of Year 11 prefects this year
and three newly appointed House
Captains – Braden Danaher, Jack
Webber and Charlotte May. Once
again, the application process for this
role was well supported by the
students, with 6 strong applicants all
preparing personal statements to
demonstrate their suitability for the
role. Along with the House Captains
from the other Houses, they will be
involved in helping to run tutor time
activities and House events throughout
the year.
Sticking with Year 11 successes, the
year group are working really hard on
their exam preparation and controlled
assessment at the moment, many of
them putting in extended hours
towards their recent French or German
speaking exams and on the Sam
Learning revision package. Harrison
Arnold has been specially mentioned
as someone who has worked really
hard towards this element of his exam.
Our new Year 7 students have settled
well into the House and are embracing
the many opportunities offered to
them at Henry Cort. Many of them
have taken up new experiences and
begun the challenge of taking top spot
with House points. The front runners
so far are, Thomas Thumwood-Staines,
Zoe Edwards, William Campbell and
Lucy Tarr with Toby Hancock taking the
top spot.
Continuing with House points, we have
a number of other students who are
contributing well to our overall total,
Ben Goodwin, Laura Marsh, Linden
Henkes, Katie Goodson, with Amy
Gregory taking overall top place for
students in Daring. A fantastic
achievement already. Well done
everybody.
Following the first set of Progress
Reports for the year, there are a
number of Daring students whose
reports are exceptional and should be
recognised –Laura Marsh, Kamile
Dumciute, Caitlin Adey, Ewan
Christopher, Lauren Evans, Laura
Howe, Olivia Radford and Mya Simpson
-Allen.
A special mention to Ewan Christopher
who has secured a place with the
Portsmouth Football Club Youth
Academy. We wish him every success
this year and congratulate him on
managing to maintain his fantastic
academic achievements, as well as
continuing to develop as a young
player.
Daring tutors have also highlighted the
following students for their
engagement in different activities or
their sporting achievements:
Katie Goodson - Art
Maxim Ganev - great performance
in French and taking part in all sorts
of after-college clubs
Fariha Choudhury and Natalie
Magallanes - Christmas Fayre
Myah Ojla and Ben Godwin -
leadership qualities in tutor time
Billy Hook – Mature approach to
PPE’s
William Campbell (Year 7) and Alex
Chivers (Year 9) - winning the
District Cross Country races for their
respective year groups
Congratulations to all those mentioned
above. Enjoy the Christmas break and
come back refreshed
and ready for another
busy term.

Murder Mystery solved
by Year 9 students
The Psychology, Health and Care,
and Science Departments at St
Vincent Sixth Form College stepped
in to the world of crime on 30
November, when they ran the
annual Murder Mystery evening. It
was an evening of intrigue and
deception with some of the finest
minds from the local Fareham,
Gosport and Portsmouth colleges
taking up the challenge to solve the
crime.
Students were taught a range of
skills that included criminal
profiling, crime scene analysis and
forensic skills in order to be
prepared for the tantalising details
that were left behind by the
criminal mastermind. The students
worked diligently during an early
evening set of workshops and then
were able to formulate their
conclusions over a working dinner.
The time came for each of the
teams to feedback their findings to
the group of renowned experts in a
specially selected panel.
Presentations and theories were
well thought out and no avenue
was left unexplored. However,
finally the perpetrator to these
crimes was found and his guilt was
proven beyond a shadow of a
doubt.
All the students who participated
had a brilliant time.
Invincible House News
Hello and welcome to a year in which
the all conquering House – Invincible!
What a great pleasure it was to pick up
the trophy at the end of the year and
do a lap of honour with my wonderful,
waltzing and winning House. Where
are we this first half term of the new
year? In poll position of course. Walk
proud with Invincible!
Walking proud with their tutor groups
are; ISC ran a game of shove ha’penny
game at the Christmas fair. We are
looking forward to our Christmas night
out at Nandos next week. Mrs
Connochie and Miss McKay have
organised a Christmas Craft Club
which is well attended. Matt Steward
has been awarded an engineering
award at cadets.
ICM are fantastic as always. Their
team work and positivity has been
superb as usual. They top the House
points table easily and I am very
proud of the way they have
approached the new college year.
Whilst they are all wonderful, a
special mention should go to Sophie
Alley and Emma Fletcher who have
thrown themselves into the Duke of
Edinburgh Award. Joe Bull who is in
the college’s district football for the
3rd year running and Mollie Baker
who continues to achieve highly as
part of her cheerleading squad. Well
done to them all and to the whole
tutor group.
Ruby from IDS has become an
Auntie to beautiful Layla and she has
already started her Auntie duties,
including feeding her and taking her
to Fareham town. In addition we
have some sporting heroes, Billy
and Dylan who won a match (an
astonishing 8-1) against the Gosport
Falcons!
IJH have a happy tutor group with a
great bunch of students. Our year 7
students; Rachel Myers, Amba
Murdoch and Georgia Potter have
settled in well and have had a good
start to their secondary career across
the board. We have a number of
students who have joined the “Over 30
House points (Bronze Certificate) club”
and on their way to Silver. They are:
Rowan Browning, Isabelle Ward,
Rachel Myers (who has a great 44
House points and is top scorer in out
Tutor Group), Hannah Newton, Gracie
Jacobs and Amba Murdoch. We have
the Deputy Head Girl Lasca Le Brocq in
our group and she is very involved in a
number of things around the college
and represents the tutor group on the
Student Council.
It has been a good year so far for the
whole Tutor Group in learning and
behaviour and we are all looking
forward to the Christmas break.
And, finally, the following are the
reason why Invincible remain
INVINCIBLE in the House points league!

Triumph House News
Here we are again at the end of
another busy term. After our
disastrous showing in the House Shield
last year, the competition is on to try
to re-establish ourselves in our rightful
place at the top of the pile. After a very
quick and good start which saw us lead
the field in late September, we have
found ourselves chasing the pack
again. However within Triumph the
competition is fierce. Below there is a
list of where each of the Triumph tutor
groups are with their House point
totals alongside.
A quite healthy inter House
competition is developing here and I
hope that it will also affect our
standing amongst the other Houses.
Well done to all of the tutor groups
especially those in the Champions
League Places.
Congratulations to our top 10
individual House Pont scorers.
Look who is top, not only is it the only
boy in the list , it is also the only Year
11 in the list and it is of course our very
own Head Boy, Kieran Elliot. Well done
to you. We are going to miss your
contribution to the college next year
and we and TJS in particular are going
to miss your House Points. Looking
further down, I am really pleased to
see a good cross section of the year
groups in here.
Well done all of you who are in the top
10 and those of you just outside of top
10.
As I said at the beginning, it has been a
really busy term. I don’t think that the
parents of today necessarily realise
how much more pressurised the
college week is for students. The huge
majority of our students work
incredibly hard here in college and
then get their homework done and
many manage to partake in the many
extra curricular activities that are going
on after college .
If you are the parent of a student in
Year 11 you may well be feeling their
exam pressure yourself. Our year 10’s
have also done PPE’s this term and are
now a good way into their GCSE
courses, all of which will now of course
be examined again as they used to be,
at the end of Year 11.
I hope that you all have a restful
holiday period. The best date for me is
December 21st. The days start to get
longer again from there. Enjoy the
daffodils when they arrive.
Mr R Shepherd
House Progress Leader
Individual Successes
Megan Murphy and Madi Hook
have been selected for the
Hampshire football team, which
means they represent their
county in football and play
regionally against other
counties.
Cameron Mummery was
selected in the Final Cut of the
Hampshire U16’s Rugby Squad.
Holly Cristofoli continues to do
amazingly well in the Equestrian
World, and is on the brink of the
GB Squad. Hopefully we will see
her at an Olympics in the future!
Sam Wright is one of our new
Year 7s. Sam is a BMX racer. He
started racing in 2014 with his
older brother Oli who is now in
Year 11. Sam competes in at least
30 big competitions during the
year, at both Regional and
National level. Nationally he has
raced in places as far as Glasgow,
Blackpool and Manchester
among many others. He is ranked
7th in the South region for last
year, and has picked up many
trophies along the way. Sam is
sponsored by Everyone Active
which run our local leisure centre,
he is supported by them in many
ways including having personal
training sessions in the gym to
keep his fitness levels up. Sam is
very driven to succeed and he also
works out at home focusing on leg
and core strength. Sam sacrifices a
lot of other activities for his sport
because he knows how hard he
has to work to get the results he
desires.
Well done to all of you!

Victorious House News
As the Autumn Term draws to a close
our thoughts turn towards the New
Year but before we do that, there has
been lots for Victorious students to
celebrate since September. Our Year 7
students have settled in admirably and
have been well supported by the older
students in their Tutor Groups. A
special mention needs to go to Niamh
Petty (VGD) who after being at Henry
Cort for only a couple of weeks, spoke
confidently to Year 5 and 6 students
and parents who had gathered in the
Cort Theatre on our Open Evening.
September also saw Maddie Spafford
(VGC) take up her role as Head Girl and
Zach Burnham (VNS) as Deputy Head
Boy, they together with the Senior
Prefects have been very busy this term
taking parent tours and supporting
staff with running the Student Council.
Maddie also spoke at last year’s Year
11 Presentation Evening, at the same
event Alex Donovan and Megan Dance
both did fantastic musical
performances for their GCSE playing in
front of a large audience without a
trace of nerves. Each Tutor Group has
also elected their tutor representatives
to attend Council meetings and act as a
conduit between the Council and the
Tutor Group.
Students nominated to receive praise
postcards home this term for their
exceptional effort and support in their
Tutor Group are VNS - Holly Ede, Lilly
Mizzen, Star Firman and Zach
Burnham. VGA - Thomas Cude, Emma
Norris, Luci Baldwin and Emma Norris.
VTL - Freya Clinton, Lauren Lycett,
Kimmy Marshall and James Lapworth.
VST - Oliver Bedford, Zara Williams,
Sophie Birks and Charlie Bell. VHM -
Kaushal Vaisnav, Seb Howes, Ethan
Corbin and Courtney Riddell. VWS -
Tom Henning, Megan Dance and Alfie
Birks. VBW - Ashleigh Lycett,
Mackenzie Crouch and Rosie Fogwill.
VNW - Lauren Kidd, Matthew Latus, Abi
Voller and Erica Halshaw. VGC - Scarlet
Eden, Vincent Daykin, Alice Crossley
and Kiara Taylor. VMC - Pip
Hemingway and Joel Fairhead. VGD -
Tomas Gittins, Niamh Petty, James Ross
and Isabelle Kimberley.
Congratulations to all of these
students.
I am determined that Victorious will
regain the House Champions trophy
back from Invincible this year and have
put out a plea to all Victorious students
to try their hardest to gain as many
House points as they can. Zara
Williams, Star Firman, Emma Norris,
Marisia Lee and Niamh Petty have the
most House points in our House
so far amassing nearly 400
House points between them.
By us all pulling together as a
team I know the trophy will be
returning to its rightful home at
the end of the year.
This term, Victorious students have
been collecting for the Fareham Food
Bank. Isabelle Kimberly in VGD came
up with the idea for her PiXL Edge
Challenge. Tutor Group VST did a
House Assembly explaining to students
what the Food Bank was and how they
could help by donating items of non-
perishable food, toiletries and advent
calendars. Isabelle and her mother
delivered the parcels to the project
which helps people in Fareham and
Gosport who are in crisis. A postcard
was received from the Food Bank
thanking Isabelle and Victorious
Students for their generosity. Outside
of college, Emily McKnight has been
awarded ‘Cadet of the Year’ and has
received two commendations. Emily is
always an excellent ambassador for the
Cadets, her maturity and impeccable
attitude during Remembrance Day was
outstanding.
Victorious students as always have also
been involved in lots of sporting
activities. Cameron Mummery plays
rugby for the Hampshire U16 rugby
team honours, Tommy Jepson plays
football for the U16 Whiteley
Wanderers and Ryan East plays Ice
hockey for the Solent and Gosport
Destroyers. In college Star Firman and
Holly Ede have played for the college
cricket and netball teams and Ryan
Badger has started to play table tennis
at the college club on a Friday. The
Victorious Year 7 girls recently won the
inter-House cross country competition
so here is hoping for a clean sweep of
the Sports Day trophies in the summer!
It just leaves me to wish you all a very
Happy Christmas and I look forward to
seeing all Victorious students back
ready to work hard in the
New Year.

Do you have some free time and
enjoy working with young people?
There is an opportunity for parents /
carers to be trained to be supervisors
for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
We have been running the Duke of
Edinburgh's Award at Henry Cort for a
number of years. Students in Year 10
and 11 get the opportunity to walk
and camp in the countryside, as well
as learning map-reading skills and
working as a team.
Adults are needed to supervise the
young people on their expeditions.
Prospective supervisors would need
to be prepared to attend an evening
introductory course and a weekend
camping course. They would need to
undergo a DBS check.

Christmas Spirit is in

Christmas Craft Club
Twenty Year 7 and 8 students
have been getting in the
Christmas spirit this half term at
our first Christmas Craft club.
Supported by a generous
donation from the Friends of
Henry Cort, the group have been
meeting each week to enjoy a
range of Christmas themed crafts
and some impromptu Christmas
karaoke. The first session saw an
explosion of glitter as the group
made their own Christmas cards,
followed by yet more glitter in
week 2 as they designed and
decorated their own Christmas
Baubles. The quality of artwork
and creativity in both sessions has
been brilliant and the group are
rightfully very proud of their work.
The last two sessions have seen
the group working in the catering
room baking their own
gingerbread from scratch as well
as decorating them.
It has been a real pleasure to work
with the group who have shown
some superb team work and
Christmas spirit. We would like to
say thank you to the Friends of
Henry Cort for their donation and
we hope to run similar sessions in
the future and would gladly
welcome donations of any craft
material that you might have
laying around at home.
Well done to all the students
involved and Merry Christmas.

Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party
Senior citizens from local care
homes and sheltered
accommodation were invited back
to college to celebrate Christmas
with a party.
The annual event has been held at
here since 1988. On 13 December
2016 around 50 elderly people
packed out the Cort Theatre for
this year’s knees-up. They were
treated to an afternoon of
entertainment put on by students
from all years including a
performance from the choir and
music ensembles.
The guests afternoon ended with
a game of bingo, Christmas carols
and a visit from Father Christmas
who gave out presents.
Christmas Concert
The annual Christmas Concert also
took place on 13 December.
Parents were treated to music
from the choir, flute ensemble,
woodwind ensemble, two rock
bands and soloists.
There was an opportunity for
some festive indulgence during
the interval with mulled wine,
Christmas cake and mince pies.
The evening ended with audience
participation singing Slade’s Merry
Christmas.
Over £100 was raised and
proceeds will go to the Creative
and Technical Arts Faculty.
