DEBRA Ireland is the national charity established in 1988 to provide patient support services and to drive research into treatments and cures for those living with the genetic skin condition, Epider-molysis Bullosa (EB). Patients who have EB, have skin that is as delicate and fragile as the wings of a butterfly, and just as easily damaged. EB has been described by a Consultant Dermatologist in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital as “easily the most debilitating and devastating disease I have ever seen.” The condition is extremely painful and leads to disability and deformity. Many patients who survive childhood face the frightening reality that they could develop a very aggressive form of skin cancer, due to the constant breakdown of their skin. DEBRA Ireland offers hope and sup-port to these patients.

So far we have managed to raise €800 through a 12 hour cycle. 12 Colleagues cycled for 1 hour each on an exercise bike in the store to help raise money. On the day we also had face painting and a hamper raffle. The day was fun and there was a lot of competition between colleagues to see who would cycle the furtherest in 1 hour.

We have several other events pencilled in before Christmas including a clothes collection and a Halloween ball. We would like to thank all our customers for their contribution to thisvery worthy cause.Superquinn Ranelagh is supporting the DEBRA Foundation

Superquinn Rathgar have decided to pick St.Lukes as their chosen charity. So far SQ Rathgar have raised €2,100 and that is purely by making their customers aware of what thay plan to do to help towards the purchase of 2 new Endoscopy Machines for the treatment of Head and Neck cancer. The 2 will cost in the region of €300,000. Having these will mean that patient’s treatment time will be reduced by 60– 80%. This significantly improves the individual patient experience and also allows more patients access to treatment machines.

One example of the efforts to raise money is that of the Superquinn butcher Stephen Gallagher who is running the Dublin Marathon on the 29th of October in aid of St.Lukes. Stephen has given up his free time to train for the marathon aswell as running a full butcher & fish counter in the Rathgar store.

“I would like to thank all my customers for their contribution so far and look forward to many more fundraising events” said Catherine Brougham Store Manager Superquinn Rathgar

In 2009, Jane Keating (now diseased)was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 28 years. Jane’s sister Clare worked in Superquinn in Blanchardstown for a number of years.

Following Jane’s diagnosis, she wanted to do something positive as there was very little informa-tion for women about ovarian cancer. With this, Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK) was founded in 2010, when we received charitable status. SOCK is a non-profit organisation and is dedicated to raising funds for research into and awareness of ovarian cancer.

We became very aware that there are leaflets in doctors’ surgeries in relation to breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer etc., however, not for ovarian cancer. We decided that SOCK would change this. Our first initiative was to develop an information leaflet which highlights the symptoms of ovarian cancer and promote awareness of this cancer. Our leaflet has been en-dorsed by Consultant Medical Oncologist Dr Paula Calvert, (Waterford Regional Hospital & Whit-field Clinic), and we launched our leaflet at the Women’s World Event in the RDS Dublin on the 1st June 2012. In the coming months we will distribute these to doctors’ surgeries throughout Ireland. In addition to promoting awareness, SOCK is currently seeking research projects to which it will channel funds directly into research into ovarian cancer. We are currently reviewing research projects underway in Ireland, when complete we then hope to channel funds into at least one of these projects over the coming months.Superquinn Tyrrelstown is supporting the SOCK Foundation

Calorific NightmareAt Chinese TakeawaysChinese takeaways have come un-der close scrutiny from health bod-ies in Ireland as a shocking new re-port from Safefood has shown that just one portion of prawn crack-ers contains one-third of an adult’s daily recommended calorie intake. Chinese takeaways are the most popular form of fast food and res-taurant food in Ireland, but the new re-port claims that most Irish people are in the dark about just how calorific even the smallest of Chinese portions can be.

During the study, Safefood sampled 220 takeaway meals from 35 Chinese takeaway outlets nationwide, looking at foods such as prawn crackers, beef curry, king prawn satay and sweet and sour chicken dishes. Some of the worst calorie of-fenders that you’ll find at your local Chi-nese include egg fried rice, which contains almost 730 calories for just one portion, whilst a main course of vegetable spring rolls and sweet and sour chicken could set

you back more than 1500 calories with more than 50g of overall saturated fat. The recommended calo-rie daily intake is just over 2000 calo-ries for a man, and 1800 for a woman. Beef curry was found to have the highest saturated fat and salt content of any meal offered in these takeaway across the country, whilst portion sizes were hugely varied, but usually excessive, with the av-erage single portion of rice weighing in at 359g, which is enough to feed two adults.

PAGE 0NE And this is without taking into account the added calories which will be gained through con-suming soft-drinks along with these meals. C l i o d h n a Foley-Nolan, director of health and nutri-tion at Safefood has said that the findings in the study are more than alarming saying: “With our taste buds in the West favour-ing foods which are high in fat, salt and sugar and because we eat bigger por-tions, Chinese dishes have become less healthy over time.” “There are plenty of healthy Chi-nese takeaway op-tions available and

people should con-sider sharing dishes when ordering to en-sure appropriate por-tion size,” she added. S a f e f o o d are now encouraging Irish takeaway outlets are being urged to of-fer healthier options, to provide calories on their menus, and to cut down on portion sizes. I ronical ly, traditional Chinese food is one of the healthiest cuisines on the planet, and when cooked properly is loaded with nutritional values. However, the version on offer on this side of planet is laden with fat and salt in order to appease the unhealthy Irish takeaway lifestyle.

A lucky young woman from Dublin has made history as the first ever winner of Na-tional Lottery’s brand new game, Daily Million. The delighted winner bought her ticket on the very first day of the new draw Tuesday, 11 September 2012, and was lucky enough to match all six numbers to scoop the top prize of €1 million. The woman was accompanied by several excited family mem-bers as she collected her prize at National Lottery offices. The winner, who wishes to remain private, bought her

ticket in Centra, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght, Dublin 24, on Tuesday, 11 September 2012. “I was buying my usual Lotto ticket and the agent mentioned the new draw Dai-ly Million. I thought I’d give it a go and I am very glad that I did!” said the lucky lady.Although still in shock about her win, she has a clear idea of how she will spend her prize, “I am excited that I’ll be able to finally buy my dream home. My family mean everything to me, so I’ll share some of my winnings with them. And if there is anything left over, I’ll

take a holiday to Australia!”The person winner is the only Daily Million top prize winner to-date.The National Lottery’s Daily Million game was launched on Tuesday 11 September 2012, replacing the Monday Million and All or Nothing games. It gives players the chance to win €1 million every day. For €1 per line, players choose six numbers from 1 to 39 for the chance to win a top prize of €1 million. For an extra 50 cent, you can play Daily Million Plus and be in with a chance to win €500,000.

Local Fine Gael TD and Min-ister of State with responsibil-ity for the OPW, Brian Hayes has confirmed that works to repair two wooden bridges in Pearse Park, Rathfarn-ham will commence shortly.Minister Hayes stated, “I am delighted to be in a position to confirm that a contract for the repair of one of the bridges in Pearse Park has been signed and work will commence very soon. The condition of a second bridge

has deteriorated beyond repair and I have asked my depart-ment to issue a procurement notice for its replacement. I hope that this work will be completed later in the year.”Minister Hayes further stated “Pearse Park and Museum has a very important place in Irish history and in fact during the Summer it was awarded the Museums Standards Pro-gramme of Ireland by the Heritage Council. The Mu-seum will be a major focus

during the forthcoming “Dec-ade of Commemorations” de-tails of which I will announce in the coming weeks. It is only right, given the historic significance of the park that it is maintained to the high-est quality and the repair of the bridges are part of that. I have also asked my Depart-ment to carry out dredging of the pond following the com-pletion of the two bridges.”

Departmenterror on fuelallowance leavespeople inthe cold – Ó Snodaigh Sinn Féin Social Pro-tection Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has told the Dáil that the department is refusing to make the first scheduled payment of fuel allowance to thousands of people in October due to an error that it made last April. He asked the government to intervene ur-gently and direct the department to reverse its decision in light of the hardship that it will cause. Speaking in the Dáil hav-ing secured a Topical Issue Debate on the matter deputy Ó Snodaigh said: “We understand that 60,000 families dependent on social welfare received a letter last month inform-ing them that due to a departmental

error last April in which the depart-ment paid for an extra week they will not receive any fuel allowance pay-ment for the week of 8th October. “The fuel allowance is a means-tested payment and by definition is only available to the people who can-not afford to pay for home heating fuel. “The government seems determined to leave people in the cold. Following the election Minister Burton cut fuel allowance for people in smokeless zones from €23.90 to €20 (-16%). At the same time she cut

the fuel components of the House-hold Benefits Package: Electricity (-25%), Gas (-20%). These cuts were the brainchild of FF but the Labour/FG government introduced them. “Then in the Budget the gov-ernment cut the fuel allowance season by 6 weeks. That’s a cut of €120 or 19%. This government have cut the fuel allowance already by a total of 35%. “These cuts are all hap-pening at a time when fuel prices are rocketing. The Commission for Energy Regulation just approved a hike of

8.5% which will add €75 to the aver-age families’ annual gas bill – these bills have already risen by €230 over the past year. Likewise electricity hikes are set to rise by almost 5% from mid-October adding more than €50 to the average annual bill. In the year to June the price of 1,000 litres of home heating fuel rose from €800 to €940. “120,000 Bord Gáis cus-tomers are now in arrears. Of these 83,500 are in arrears of more than €100 for more than two months.“The government should direct the

department to reverse this decision and make the fuel payment on the 8th October. To do otherwise is to condemn poor families to the cold.”Responding to Minister Dinny McGin-ley who apologised for the error but refused to reverse the department’s decision, Deputy Ó Snodaigh said;“Your response is appalling and I know where my constituents would tell the government to shove its apology.

Ireland is in the right direc-tion towards “heading out” of its current financial crisis ac-cording to a recent report. The report, which was con-ducted by Danske Research, has pro-jected that Ireland will return to posi-tive growth in 2013, despite the modest economic figures which the national economy has been posting in 2012. Danske Research is part of Danske Markets and operates as part of Danske Bank Group’s research depart-ment, which monitors financial mar-kets and economic trends of relevance to Danske Markets and its clients. Early forecasts which have been given expect Ireland’s GDP to grow by up to 0.8% by the end of 2013, and to have grown by a further 2.3% in 2014. The growth is expected to come from an increase in exports and an over-all stabilisation in domestic demand.

In recent months, the Irish housing market has started to dig itself out of the crisis, as there have been two consecutive months of price increase, whilst fiscal tightening is progress-ing as planned by the Government.

The Government has also announced that it’s on track to meet its end of year tax targets, as the lat-est exchequer figures to emerge sug-gest that national revenues are running €385 million ahead of targets. The main areas which garnered the big-gest return for the exchequer included both income and corporation taxes, VAT and a decrease in excise duty by a third for a third consecutive month. The upcoming budget is expected to bring further cuts and

hardships across the board, how-ever, the Department of Finance says that it things are looking up for Ireland in the next few years. The current deficit is ex-pected to fall to 8.3% of GDP in 2012 and to a further 7.5% of GDP in 2013, with general government debt expected to reach 117% of GDP at the end of this year which is a decrease in com-parison with figures at the end of 2011. Unemployment figures in Ire-land have also stabilised over the past year, as unemployment rates in August of this year remained unchanged at 14.7% from the month prior. Overall, almost 360,000 jobs have been lost na-tionwide due to the recession, which has led to a major increase in outward migration, particularly amongst the 20 to 34 segment in the labour force. This outward migration is expected to slow in the next two years as the economies takes small steps towards recovery.

Light At The End Of The Recessional Tunnel?

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Mid-West, Derek Keating, has appealed to voters to ensure that they are on the Register of Electors ahead of the Children’s Ref-erendum on Saturday 10th November. “It is important to ensure that you have your say on 10th November. This is only possible if you are on the Register of Electors. “The Children’s Referendum is a major decision for our country and its citizens. Its aim is to amend the Consti-tution to protect children, support fami-lies, remove inequalities in adoption and recognise children in their own right.

“After the Stability Treaty Referendum, I met a significant num-ber of constituents who did not vote be-cause many were not on the Register. “This important Constitutional amendment comes after 20 years of debate, numerous Church and State scandals, bad practice by our professional services and lack of resources by previous Governments. “I want to encourage every citi-zen to familiarise themselves with the de-bate that will take place to ensure that they are available on Saturday 10th No-vember to vote and express their view. “I am, of course, calling on you to

vote in favour of children’s rights by voting Yes on 10th November. It was An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny who made the decision to cre-ate a full Cabinet post representing children. “It is my intention in the coming weeks to announce details of public meet-ings and discussion groups in order to en-sure that every opportunity is used to inform and promote the passing of the Referendum on behalf of all the children of the State. “The Government’s website for information is http://www.childrensrefer-endum.ie. To ensure that you are eligible to vote in this Referendum, you can check the live Register at www.checktheregister.ie.”

Irish Scientists Sings Praises Of Coconut Oil

According to a new scientific study, co-conut oil is some-thing which could prevent tooth decay amongst all ages in the coming years. Scientists from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland have tested the antibac-terial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, and what they found was that the enzyme-af-fected coconut oil acted strongly against most strains of the Strepococ-cus bacteria which live in the mouth, which pro-duces acid that is a ma-jor cause of tooth decay. Additional test-ing also concluded that the enzyme-affected co-conut oil reacted strongly against the yeast bacteria Candida which is one of the key causes of Thrush.

Aswell as be-ing an excellent anti-biotic, coconut oil is also hugely beneficial to the hair and to the skin. Many people also use it as a stress reliever and it has also been found to be useful in maintaining cholesterol levels and boosting weak immune systems. The health ben-efits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of healthy acids such as lauric acid and caprylic acid and vitamins like Vi-tamin E and Vitamin K. Scientist from the Athlone Institute of Technology have said that we could be seeing coconut oil being added to oral hygiene prod-ucts such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Lead

researcher Dr. Damien Brady said: “Incorporat-ing enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alterna-tive to chemical addi-tives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection,” He continued on by saying: “Our data suggests that products of human digestion show antimicrobial activity. This could have impli-cations for how bacteria colonise the cells lining the digestive tract and for overall gut health.” The findings of the study were pre-sented at the Society for General Microbiol-ogy’s Autumn Confer-ence at the University of Warwick in the UK.

Reform Of Junior Cert Must Be Properly Resourced

Sinn Féin education spokes-person Jonathan O’Brien TD has broadly welcomed the measures announced to reform the Junior Cert Exam but he has expressed concerns that teachers will be expected to assess their own students’ work.Deputy O’Brien said: “The worrying fall in literacy and numeracy standards in recent years can in part be attribut-ed to the Junior Cert and there is a general consensus that this 20-year-old exam needs to be reformed.Education Minister Ruairí Quinn deserves credit therefore, for im-plementing radical changes to an exam that is of key importance to young people during their first four years at secondary school. “I believe we need to learn from progressive, high performing education systems such as those in Finland and New Zealand where there is less emphasis on learning by rote and greater importance placed on continual assessment. “I understand that the new revised Junior Cert exam

syllabuses are to be drawn up by the National Council for Cur-riculum and Assessment (NCCA) and will combine traditional subjects with a number of short courses in areas such as digital media, entrepreneurship, sus-tainable energy and living and Chinese language and culture. “These changes will hopefully ensure that future gen-erations of young people leaving Irish schools are better equipped to meet the demands of an evolv-ing workplace and global market. Reform of the Junior Cert will however be rendered meaning-less unless our education sys-tem is properly resourced and this includes ensuring there are incentives for the most capa-ble graduates to enter teaching. “Moves to introduce standardised tests in numeracy and English reading in second year, from 2014, should improve literacy and numeracy standards that are so essential achieving an individual’s academic potential. “I also welcome the proposals to have in place stand-ardised tests in science related subjects, and this must be ac-

companied by changes in how science is taught at primary lev-el which presently averages at one and half hours per week, or well below the OECD average. One of the areas I am concerned about are the plans to have teachers assessing their students’ work. This is likely to place teachers in a very difficult position both in terms of their increased work load, the time they have to teach and problems with objectivity when assess-ing their own student’s work.“They will also face the added burden and pressure from parents, particularly those who have unre-alistic expectations of their own children and it is an aspect of the re-form proposals for the Junior Cert that must be carefully considered. “Another issue that we will be looking at is the future sta-tus of history and geography and how they will be affected should the number of core subjects with-in the Junior Cert be reduced. “I believe it would be a retrograde step to downgrade either of these subjects as they are a vi-tal part of our school curriculum.”

‘It has always amazed me as to the reasons why people would pay a monthly fee for something that is freely accessible to anybody’ says Turlough O’Connor, CEO and co director of LoCaL CoMpany offer suBsCription free aLternative to upC and sKy Billfreetv.ie. “A lot of peo-ple are under the impression that the

likes of UPC and SKY actually ‘pro-vide’ channels like the RTE’s,BBC’s, ITV’s, CH4’s etc, when in factthey don’t. They merely provide a fa-cility to view them. Anybody who has the right digital box can view them for nothing” he says. Turlough O’Connor along with Larry Mackey, two local lads (their company is based in Bal-lymount) saw a niche in the market and with unemployment growing and the introduction of things like household and water charges down the line, one can certainly see their reasoning. People pay an averageof between €400 - €500 yearly on basic TV subscriptions and certainly with a one off price of €289 including full installation for complete ownershipwith no more TV bills, it’s a very entic-ing product. “We also understand that people may not be able to access €289 at once so a six month payment plan is available” And what of guarantees? “All our digital combo boxes carry a 12 month guarantee and our custom-ers don’t pay a penny till its installed and they are happy with it”...”and you

get HD (high definition) for free’.. chips in Larry ‘”True enough” adds Turlough “These companies charge a monthly fee for HD when it’s ab-solutely free also”. And what of peo-ple who have broadband, phone and TV packages? ”No problem...people can drop the TV part of their pack-age and just retain the broadband and phone part...in fact I have UPC broadband myself” Turlough laughs“ but I haven’t paid a TV bill in 2 years”. “Of course there are people who love SKY sports 24/7 and we don’t expect them to change but with over160 channels including all the main UK, Irish, movie and childrens chan-nels, we can offer a very substantial package that our customers are veryhappy with” And with the phone ringing constantly while we were talking, theres no doubt that the message is spreading fast.

Letters:U-2-USDear Editor,

I have lived in Walkinstown since 2005 and I have used the car park at the Halfway House to call into the Bank Of Ireland. This car park was always free of charge, but on Friday 21/09 at approxi-mately 15.22, I was clamped by APCOA Parking.

I was litterly in the bank no more than 4 minutes when I was clamped. I approached the clamper, he said I had to pay the fine, I said I had no money, at this point he suggested the following;

That if I went and got some cash “say €30 to €35” he would take the clamp off, he said he would be back in a few minutes and he went and clamped 3 to 4 other cars. I was not forthcoming with this “cash” alternative. He then told me I had to pay the fine, I said I was not paying it. He then printed my ticket 15.28.

There then were a number of phone calls between the clamper and myself, where he actually rang me twice to see if I managed to find the money. The clamper told me that he is supposed to give me 10 mins before he clamps the car, obviously this never happened.

I am fed up with companies like APCOA Parking thinking that they can do what-ever they like. I have requested an explanation from them on the above incident. I am awaiting a response.

Yours

AndreiWalkinstown

APCOA Response:“APCOA is an international Parking Management com-pany, which is ISO certified and as such we operate to a defined quality management standard. We are a member of the Irish Parking Association (IPA) and as such are governed by IPA Code of Practice and Ap-peals service. Under data protection rules we would be precluded from commenting on individual clamping cases, however we would like to stress that we do of-fer a robust “two tier” appeals service with the second level completed by an independent ombudsman to adjudicate if required, which any motorist can avail of.”

“In relation to the paid parking in the Halfway House car park, please note that advisory signs were erected throughout the car park on 27th of July 2012 to notify users of the car park that paid parking would be com-ing into effect. From this the pay and display machine was activated on the 28th of August 2012 thus giv-ing the motorists in excess four weeks’ notice of the change to the car park. Please see notification sig-nage attached.”

Music

College radio ittfm came back to the air waves on the 24th of September, ittfm proved it was more then just an-other college radio station, sounding more like a finely tuned national radio station. The stars of tomorrows radio is definitely what they are. While listen-

ing, you quickly forget that these stu-dents are still only learning their craft. With the station coming on air at midday it firmly grabs you by the ears and keeps you glued to your ra-dio till it finishes at 9 pm. In-between these 9 hours you get a running order

of shows that would make other sta-tions blush. Starting with “The afternoon show with Cathal Flaherty and Lisa Burke”. You are then given “The Music Mash Up show”, that is in vein of every-thing Spin FM would like to be . The mature listener is give shows like “The grapevine” and “A load of bollard” but for us its “The Repub-lic Of Lewis show” that stood out . The Republic Of Lewis started its week with any interview from an up and com-ing band Late City Edition, followed by the exclusive preview of their new sin-gle “Sunday Morning” months before anyone else will get a chance to play it. The show also proved that it could get big names. Just months after Donovan, one of the biggest singers of the 60s and 70s, was inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame, he made his first Euro-pean interview about it on this show. This was the perfect show for Donovan to do, as his music fit-

ted with the theme of the repub-lic of Lewis show Perfectly “the best music from the 50s till now”. The Show is hosted by Lew-ie Lewis, a presenter whose styling can only be described as a cross between Dave Fanning and Chris Evans. Lewie and his co –host Dave Barnavile are the key to the shows success. Mix this with there choice of music which spans from Elvis to Oasis and you get our new favorite radio show and station.TRIUMPHANT: Lewie Lewis during his interview with rock legend Donovan

Paranormal Activity 4(2012)

The film takes place five years after Paranormal Activity 2. The plot follows Katie (who starred in the first Paranormal Activity) and Hunter (who is Katie’s sister’s child), as they have just moved into a house together as mother and son. Their new arrival begins a series of paranormal events for their neighbours. Rest assured Paranormal Activity 4 will have the same nail biting/ terrifying scenes as the previ-ous films in the series, and will provide some great Halloween viewing. Paranormal Activity 4 is in cinemas on the 17th of October.

DVD & BLU RAYAvengers Assemble (2012)

The Avengers is a superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and directed by Joss Whedon who was the creator of the massively successful Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series. For Marvel comic fans, this was a very highly anticipated film, as it brings together their favourite Marvel comic superheroes. In The Avengers, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who have all been given their own feature films, as well as Black Widow (Scarlet Johannson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) come together after being recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who is director of the peacekeep-ing organisation called S.H.I.E.L.D. Their mission is to stop Thor’s brother Loki (who appeared in the Thor feature film) from destroying the Earth.

As expected this film is action packed from the beginning, as we are re-introduced to each superhero. If you have previously seen Marvel’s films you will need no introduc-tion. I quite enjoyed the fact that each superhero who features in The Avengers was given their own film, as you are already familiar which each character. The interaction between each superhero is great, especially when Tom Stark (Iron Man) is concerned. Scarlet Johannson provides the eye candy for the men as she dons a leather cat suit for the majority of the film, but ladies don’t despair as we have our own eye candy in the form of Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans.

This is definitely a blockbuster that has lived up to the hype, whether you are a Marvel Comic fan or not, The Avengers will definitely not disappoint!

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2(2012)

The fifth and final instalment of The Twilight Saga is finally upon us. Based on the novel Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer, (which is the final book in the Twilight Series), we finally get to see Bella (Kristen Stewart) in her vampire form after the first part of Break-ing Dawn frustratingly ended before letting us see Bella as a vampire. We will also see Bella and Edward (Robert Pattinson), along with the Cullen family fight to protect Bella and Edward’s child from the Volturi. Breaking Dawn Part 2, will definitely have been worth the wait! The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 is in cinemas on the 16th of November.

Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day(2012)

Directed by Dick Carruthers; Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day documents the band’s 2007 reunion show at London’s O2 Arena. Filmed in high definition, this was the first time Led Zeppelin played a full set since they split in 1980, and the performance was extraordinary. This is a must see for Led Zeppelin fans, as well as music fans in general. Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day is in cinemas on the 17th of October.

Boardwalk Empire has returned to our screens for a third series. Set in Atlantic City during the Prohibition period of the 1920’s, it stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson as the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City due to his success in the boot-legging business. Nucky is part politician and part gangster, who is as cruel and vicious as he is charismatic. The first episode of the third series did not disappoint as we are once again shown the power and cruelty involved in bootlegging liquor during the prohibition era.

The screenplay, visual style as well as Buscemi’s acting is excellent, and has won Boardwalk Empire widespread critical acclaim. The first ever episode of Board-walk Empire was directed by Martin Scorsese. Boardwalk Empire airs on Sky Atlantic every Saturday at 9:00pm.

Further decreases in the numbers of passengers fly-ing in first class and business class travel are expected to hit the European airline industry hard in 2013, ac-cording to the latest reports. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced its industry fore-cast for the end of 2012, which projected European airlines to post a loss of €940 million by the end of this year. However, on a global front, airlines are expected to post an overall profit of more than €3 billion due to the increase in fairs in certain world regions. IATA has reported a de-crease in first class trans-Atlantic travel of 2.4% over the past year, and has cited this for the main reason behind the huge losses which are expected to be posted. IATA has also noted that the ongoing European fi-nancial crises, which have hit all of the major markets across the continent, are the primary rea-son for the poor take-up of pre-mium class flights in recent years.

Premium European airlines such as International Air-lines Group an Lufthansa rely heavily on their long-haul opera-tions for most of their earnings. Director General of IATA Tony Tyler has said that Europe has some work to do if it is to get some of their big-gest airlines back on track. “The eurozone crisis is continuing despite the best efforts of politicians,” said Tyler. “Not only is the economy weak but Eu-rope has some very unfriendly conditions for doing [aviation] business – onerous regulations, high taxes and an air traffic man-agement system badly in need of modernisation,” he added. While governments and the European Central Bank have taken measures to shore up confi-dence in the euro, these have been fraught with political difficulties.” However Tyler fin-ished by saying that the future

isn’t bleak for the European air-line industry as they take the right steps towards recovery. “Aviation has an important role to play as the global economystruggles. Growth is the only way forward and a healthy aviation industry can stimulate that—linking stagnating de-veloped economies to robust emerging markets,” he noted.

IATA has also reported that the Asian market is currently experi-encing an upswing in their profit margins, with Asian airlines ex-pected to bring in close to €3 bil-lion in net profit alone, with the middle-eastern airlines in particu-lar expected to post very healthy returns by the end of this year.

Arvato Finance Continues Its GrowthStrategy With 100 Job Expansion In DublinArvato Finance today celebrated its continued growth in Ireland by de-livering on its promise to create 150 jobs in Dublin, a full two years ahead of schedule. The positions have been created in IT, consulting, finance and accounting, project management and customer service roles over the past 12 months. Supporting the growing de-mand for private and public BPO ser-vices, arvato is set to expand further and 100 positions have been created across the arvato network with over 60 positions currently available re-flecting the strong demand for skilled people and 40 recently recruited. To accommodate this sustained growth arvato has moved into new premises in Dublin’s East Point Business Park. The build-ing will be officially opened by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, during an event with cli-ents, business partners and employees today. Marking the occasion, Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD said, “Only one year ago we celebrated arvato Finance’s 15th anni-versary in Ireland and its plans to create 150 new jobs by 2014. I am delighted that arvato has already delivered on its promise and is further expanding its employee numbers and physical presence here. The Government has been working hard to improve Ireland’s attractiveness as a business location and it’s great to see international companies expand

and thrive in Ireland, boosting jobs and bring-ing our business services sector forward.” Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD said: “To-day’s announcement that arvato is expand-ing ahead of schedule and creating 100 addi-tional jobs in Fairview is great news for north Dublin and for Ireland. Financial services forms a key part of the Government’s plans for jobs and growth, with a target of 10,000 additional jobs by 2016. Today’s announce-ment shows that Ireland’s offering is strong in this sector. I am determined that, through continued implementation of the Action Plan for Jobs, we will continue to attract ad-ditional investment in this sector and create more jobs for north Dublin and for Ireland”. Dublin continues to be a strate-gic centre of knowledge and innovation for arvato Finance. The company has made significant investment into the refurbish-ment of the 6,000 sq metre premises, which has been re-named ‘The arvato Building’. It features state of the art office and meet-ing facilities for 350 employees, and pro-vides sufficient space for future expansion. Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ire-land said, “With more than 1,350 employees in Ireland, arvato, is an important strategic client for IDA Ireland and their decision to expand further demonstrates the long-term commitment of this German company to their Irish operations. The Irish company has won a number of strategic business lines over re-cent years and this expansion and new office

space is an endorsement of the significance of the business processing sector in Ireland.’’ arvato’s employees in Dublin work in more than 35 languages. The op-eration’s multicultural employee base sup-ports Dublin’s position as a key strategic centre for the company’s global network. Andrea Kaminski, President, In-ternational Finance and arvato Ireland, said, “We’ve been successfully providing outsourc-ing solutions to national and international cli-ents from Ireland for over 16 years now. We’re very confident we’ll continue to find the busi-ness environment and the highly skilled peo-ple we need to support future growth. We look forward to starting work at our new offices and continuing our success story in Ireland!” “We’ve been successfully providing outsourcing solutions to national and international clients from Ireland for over 16 years now. The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

Ea Sports Fifa 2013 Poised For Historic Opening

Anticipation for FIFA Soccer 13 points to a histor-ic opening expected to be the biggest sports vide-ogame launch ever. More than 1 million games (and counting) have been pre-ordered worldwide, while over 4.6 million fans, the most ever for an EA SPORTS game have played the demo for the Play-Station®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, and PC. This represents a 42 percent increase year-over-year in demo users worldwide. In North America, over 875,000 fans have played the demo, driven largely by 294,000 first-time FIFA Soccer fans in the United States. Social media indicators are revealing massive interest and momentum in the game. The EA SPORTS football community on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/easportsfifa has surpassed

10 million Likes, and according to Brandwatch, FIFA Soccer 13 was mentioned every 1.3 seconds on Twitter, YouTube and other social media platforms in the three days after the demo launched. FIFA Soccer 13 is already a critical success with 32 review scores of 90 out of 100 or higher. In Spain, Eurogamer awarded FIFA Soccer 13 a perfect 100 score, while Vandal.net (94/100) described the action as “close to perfection.” In Italy, FIFA Soccer 13 earned 95/100 from Multiplayer, who called the game the “best FIFA ever.” In France, JeuxVideo Magazine (90/100) said “FIFA 13 approaches a form of perfection,” while UK magazine GamesMaster (91/100) called it “football perfection.” FIFA Soccer 13 will once again give players all over the world the opportunity to compete to become a true FIFA World Champion by competing in the FIFA Interac-tive World Cup, one of the in-game modes. The tourna-ment broke its own competitor record last year with more than 1.3 million registered players all over the world.

FIFA Soccer 13 trailers, screenshots and fact sheet are available at http://info.ea.com. FIFA Soccer 13 will be available for the PlayStation 3 with PlayStation Move support, Xbox 360 with Kinect™, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, Nintendo Wii™ console, PC, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo 3DS™, and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and November 18 on Nintendo Wii U™ system.

The game is available on the App Store for iP-hone®, iPad®, and iPod touch®. FIFA Soccer 13 is rated E for everyone by the ESRB and Pegi 3+.

On Halloween Night, Remember To Join THE HAUNTED................

Halloween celebrations will take place in South Dublin County on Octo-ber 31st between 5-7pm in Tallaght and North Clon-dalkin. These celebra-tions will provide a fun filled spectacle for fami-lies in a safe environment. “THE HAUNTED” celebrations will involve over 200 young people from Tal-laght and Clondalkin who will create artistic pieces in arts and

performance workshops to dis-play on Halloween night. There will be a parade in Tallaght and a pageant in North Clondalkin with celebration of music, dance and games at both events. The Mayor Cathal King visited Dominic’s Com-munity Centre and took part in a HAUNTED workshop. “I am delighted to take part in prepar-ing for the HAUNTED – I am looking forward to seeing all of these wonderful pieces in the parade. Halloween is a special

time of the year – the HAUNT-ED is a learning opportunity and a celebration. As Mayor of South Dublin County I want everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween – don’t pro-vide material for bonfires, think of others and come out and see these artists display their scary artistic pieces. I am looking forward to the HAUNTED” To reduce the amount of material available for bon-fires, the Council in conjunc-tion with CCRI in the lead up

to Halloween are encouraging households to recycle WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electri-cal) materials - that’s anything with a battery or a plug, in a safe and legal way. There will also be a free WEEE collec-tion day provided by WEEE Ireland on 27th October at Powercity Fonthill 10am -4pm. South Dublin County Council encourages every-one to join in the Halloween celebrations and support a Safe and Happy Halloween.
