So with interest I have seen many posts this morning regarding the decision to leave the EU.

THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!!

Please stop screaming at each and calling each other names. Opinions of 30 plus million people made the decision and at 10:00pm last night, was the point of no return. There is nothing you can now do about it now, its done lets make it work.

I have kept my own view personal and that remains the case but I am worried to see the knee jerk reactions that are taking place.

So I have compiled my own thoughts on what is next. You may disagree as is your right!

The Stock MarketOnce again financial institutions took a gamble (and they shouldn't) that remain will win, they were wrong AGAIN!! It dropped overnight however after seeing Mark Carney from Bank of England give a talk and releasing £250B the market has stopped its panic and is recovering very quickly.

BusinessBusiness will continue, we are all still working this morning. Yes bigger international companies are considering their future with the UK but we have money, they want money. We have employees, they need employees.Whoever becomes our Brexit PM has a fantastic opportunity here to maintain free trade with Europe. If you look on any map this morning, we are still just 22 miles from mainland Europe. We didn't sail away nearer America and the countries of Europe still want our trade both import and export. Some of us will still be drinking French and Italian wine, we will still want to buy German cars and Airbus in France will still want our Rolls Royce engines and every country will still want our tourism and JCB's.What I will say at this point, we now have an unbelievable opportunity to open talks with other counterparts around the world without the rules of Brussels getting in our way.Ports like Felixstowe and alike will still be full of containers coming in and out. Airports will bring passengers to and from our shores and Eurotunnel will not be caved in.

FinanceI am be wrong here as I was very young when we entered the EU (or whatever it was called back then) but I am led to believe the pound was the strongest currency of any in the world and yet we are now only 5th. This does concern me so again an opportunity to grow again to 1st is there. I'm no financial genius but we have a wealth of powerful businessmen and women in the UK who we should call upon to show us the way. Pay them millions to do it if we have to but their knowledge will be worth 100 times more than what we pay them.

Sovereignty and TourismThe Royal Family are not going anywhere - they cost us a fraction of what they bring in from tourists.

ImmigrationThis has never been an issue for me - I do find sad that though that some people of outside EU origin had a very difficult decision because IN meant one bad option and OUT meant another bad option.BenefitsAs far I can see this is the best outcome for a system that is essentially British but Europe has a foot in the door on it.

Local GovernmentIt's a very difficult one to judge what will happen to local government bodies such as district/city councils because of the thought of devolution. All I know, whatever the outcome, local governments are in for some mean cuts anyway with money depreciating from central government to nothing by 2020.ECDC for instance is combating the loss of these payments by creating a Local Authority Trading Company and some other councils around UK already have these up and running. They seem to be working but to early to tell overall. ECDC's plan looks solid but has some local tension over areas they want to develop.Scotland & N. IrelandOur dear Scotland & N. Ireland, I would not like to be in your shoes this morning. You now are faced with a near impossible task but choose wisely and take your time.

NHSAlways going to be a contentious issue!! We still have one of the best in the world but just badly managed. This issue for me comes back to getting a top drawer business person involved and making what money they have work.

ConclusionTime for Great Britain to do what it does best and solve the problem it has faced for a generation and in the face of adversity, overcome!!!

The sun is still shining, the birds are still singing and my cat is moulting all over the place.

Changes to Brexit are going to take years to start, let alone complete - so we get on with it, grow and plan!!

An Ely heart attack surviver has thanked ambulance staff and volunteers for giving him a “second chance” after saving his life six months ago.

Father of three Peter Swan had an emotional reunion with his life-savers on Wednesday.

Peter, who can’t remember anything from the experience, is “eternally grateful” and January 13 has become his “second birthday” after he was resuscitated following a cardiac arrest at his home.

Thanks to the quick actions of his daughter, Sophie, and the fast response of community first responders (CFR), East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) and East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) staff, the 52-year-old is on course to make a full recovery.

The computer salesman had returned home from a run on January 13 when he started getting chest pain and collapsed at about 7.45pm.

Sophie immediately called 999 and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Within four minutes of the 999 call, Claire Taylor and David Clarke from Ely CFRs were on scene, closely followed by Amber Bradbury and Jake Fretwell in an ambulance. Adrian Sands and Jacqueline Hayward attended in another ambulance, followed by duty locality officer Matt Sharp in a response car and Dr Nathan Howes and critical care paramedic Tim Daniels from EAAA.

After eight shocks from a defibrillator, they managed to resuscitate Peter who was taken by land ambulance to Papworth Hospital where he had surgery to repair a blocked artery.

His first memory following the emergency was waking up in hospital eight days later. He was discharged 13 days after his cardiac arrest.

Peter, who has since had a defibrillator implanted in his chest, said: “I am eternally grateful. It was totally unexpected and not wanted, but this has been given me a second chance and I have a second birthday.

“It has been a very slow recovery and I realise it is a long road but I’m alive and that is the main thing.”

His wife Julie added: “It was amazing to have so much care there. It was a terrifying experience, but I knew he was getting the best possible treatment and I am so grateful.”

Peter is looking forward to becoming a grandfather later this summer. However, because of the amnesia he suffered following his collapse, his daughter Emma had to tell him seven times that she and her partner were having a baby.

Emergency Medical Technician Adrian and his colleagues also praised 22-year-old Sophie, who has had no formal first aid training, for the actions that helped save her dad’s life.

He said: “We go to so many people who do not try CPR when someone is cardiac arrest. However, Sophie was spot on and did really well and had the confidence to get on the chest and do something. That is why his recovery has been so good.”

It was the first cardiac arrest that CFR Claire had attended after completing her training with EEAST to attend medical emergencies.

Muslim Community feed Ely

The Ely Muslim Association once again feed Ely in a spectacular way on the Market Square.

Despite Football being on, hundreds of people turned out for the now annual Fasting Feast that the Indian restaurants around Ely arrange to show why they love being a part of our community.

Ely’s Mayor, Ian Lindsay came out to thank the restauranteurs and try the food that Muslims eat commonly during the fasting period of Ramadan when the sun has set. The food served was basmati, samosas, bhaji, dates and fruit salad.

Leaders of the Association, Muhammad Ali and Shiar Ahmed Choudrey explain why Ramadan is important to the Muslim religion and what it means to fast but also provide food to others during their holy month.

The restaurants involved are Sylhet, Balti King, Le Spice, Basmati, Thai Lounge, Indian Garden, Sutton Tandoori, Spice Lounge, Mango Valley and Market Street Brasserie.

Popular Pooch

rehomedA “wonderful” dog whose eyes were surgically removed has today found his “forever home”.

Pooch was a familiar sight at RSPCA Block Fen and could often be spotted taking a snooze in the Wimblingdon shelter’s reception area.

On its Facebook page, the charity says: “Pooch unfortunately had to have both of his eyes removed due to medical reasons, but this hasn’t stopped this wonderful man finding himself a forever home.”

Block Fen is preparing for its annual Gala Day and Fun Dog Show, which will be held on Saturday, July 16.

“We are asking for help with donations towards our bottle tombola, these can also be jars. We are also looking for prizes for our big raffle and other tombolas. No prize is too small.”

All proceeds will go towards helping animals “ here in our care who have been removed from situations of cruelty and neglect by the RSPCA Inspectors in East Anglia”.

If you can help please call 03001230726 (option 4).

Green space closed for summer – Anglia Water says it had no choice

about the timing

An Ely mum who lives by a park closed to the public for three months has questioned why Anglia Water has chosen to carry out sewage works during the busy summer period.

Work began today to lay a new sewer pipe within the green space between Downham Road and West Fen Road.

As reported in Spotted in Ely last week, the work is expected to take 12 weeks, meaning that the park will be closed throughout the summer, including during the school holidays.

The green space, which also borders Teasel Drive, Columbine Road and Mallow Close, is popular with joggers, walkers, cyclists and dog owners.

Claire Harrison, who lives by the park, together with husband Richard and daughters Kessie, five, and Layla, three, says Anglia Water could not have picked a worse time to carry out the sewage work.

“I am disappointed about the timing of these works. I appreciate they have to be done and that whenever Anglia Water chose there would be issues, but this is definitely the worst time of year for us.

“We have two young children who will be on their summer holidays for six of the 12 weeks and we use this area for

bike riding, picnics, blackberry picking and as a meeting point with friends.”

She and Richard, both keen runners, also use the area for exercising, and for walking their dog.

Anglia Water plan to lay down a new sewer pipe to take flows from a new development to an existing pumping station. In a letter sent to nearby residents, the company warned there may be some noise and dust as a result of the work.

Claire is worried that she and other park residents may have to stay indoors with the windows closed if the site became excessively smelly, noisy or dusty.

She has also expressed concerns about the lack of publicity surrounding the park closure.

“I’m not sure if it is appreciated how many people come here from across Ely to walk their dogs for example and the first they will know of the closures is when they arrive.”

Other Spotted in Ely followers have also expressed dismay about the closure of the popular green space.

An Anglia Water spokeswoman said: “This is a scheme to lay the new sewer for the new housing development, so we don’t get a say as to when this work takes place.”

The company was obliged to connect the new sewer for the developer before September 15, so this could not be done at a different time, she said.

Tali [email protected]

Page 11: Issue 19 pages

“For the safety of staff and members of the public, access to the working area will be restricted although a section of the footpath… will still be available for residents during this work.

“We have planned the work carefully to minimise disruption to roads and residents, but a project of this scale will always cause some disturbance. The work will involve laying the new sewer in a trench. This is called ‘open cut’. This is a well-used technique and while we warn customers that there may be some noise and dust, there should not be anything extreme or excessive. Rather, we try and give customers as much information as possible so they can make decisions that best suit them individually.

Version 2Anglia Water work“The nature of the work we do – digging large holes in the ground – is inevitably disruptive for someone, but it is essential. We are sorry to those who are impacted by this work but we have to work within the timelines available on such a big project as a new housing development.”

About a fortnight before the work started, Anglia Water sent out 425 letters to local residents, informing them about the project. The company had planned to put out a press release this week but last week’s Spotted in Ely piece “pipped us to the post”, the spokeswoman said.

“In hindsight we should have tried to send this sooner for wider awareness and we are sorry if that has meant some people living farther afield felt they did not had all the information.”

Can you spot over 600 species in 24 hours?

Calling nature-lovers: the race is on to spot as many plants and animals as possible in 24 hours, with organisers of Ely Wildspace BioBlitz hoping to beat last year’s record of 600 species.

Members of the public will be joined by experts at Bioblitz 2016 from 5pm on July 1 to 5pm on July 2 as they pull out the stops to smash last year’s count.

This year’s free event for all ages offers a range of activities lead by local conservationists, who will advise on where to look for particular plants and animals and how to identify them.

Andrew Balmford, Professor of Conservation Science at the University of Cambridge said: “This is an extraordinary chance to join some great experts and discover together some of the amazing creatures that make their home in Ely.”

Event Co-ordinator Shelley Bolderson said: “As well as getting to grips with what lives on site, the BioBlitz is more about engaging local people of all ages in nature and the wonderful wild spaces we have on our doorstep, and passing on the skills to identify and encourage wildlife in their own back gardens.”

Organisers are particularly keen to locate a green-eyed dragonfly called the Norfolk Hawker, which is currently only found outside Norfolk at Paxton Pits.

“This species is under threat due to changing land use, pollution and climate change which leads to unsuitable habitats for these fantastic dragonflies. To find them in the Wildspace would mean the species is gaining new territory and that our efforts to maintain a range of habitats for different species are paying off. We’re also keen to spot the fantastically named and rare Soldierfly called the

Ornate Brigadier.”

Ely Wildspace has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unusual geology and rare species. This gives it protection from development, so that both wildlife and local residents can “enjoy this special place on the doorstep of our city.”A key objective for safeguarding and promoting

the Wildspace for the future is to compile a list of animal and plant species for the site.

Wildlife volunteers have been working hard to create the optimum wildflower habitat for a distinctively coloured butterfly called the Marbled White, which is currently found in Chettisham. They have been planting seeds from the meadow in the hope that Marbled Whites will be enticed to the Wildspace.

Bioblitz events will kick off at 5pm on Friday July 1 with bat walks and moth trapping at Ely Sailing Club.

On Saturday July 2 people are invited to Pocket Park to find dragonflies, go on minibeast hunts and learn how to identify birds by sight and sound.

There will be loads of activities to drop in to at Basecamp: join Action for Swifts and find out more about these amazing long-distance migrants, dissect some owl pellets with the Society of Biology, get your face painted and do lots of wildlife crafts.

There will also be self-led trails for people to take away with them.

People are advised to book ahead to guarantee their places on activities.

Refugee poster campaign gets huge response from

“compassionate” kids

A competition aimed at reflecting on the plight of refugees has had an overwhelming response, with more than 100 children from across East Cambridgeshire taking part.

The Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign organised the poster competition, which had the theme “Home/Refuge”.

Children were invited to reflect on what a safe home meant to them and how it would feel to be a refugee with nowhere safe to live.

The 13 winners were given their prizes at a ceremony at Ely Library on Saturday, June 18.

All winners with Dr McCormack

Amelia Gipp won the Key Stage 1 category, with Arlo Thurston getting the runner-up prize. Klara Wagner, Felicity Evans and James Stead were commended.

The Key Stage 2 category was won by Lily Clanfield, with Georgia Holgate coming second. William Bevan and Eloise Holgate were commended.

Orla Harrison won the Key Stage 3, with Ryan Pietras named runner-up. Ellen Olley and Anna Braybrooke were commended.

Prizes and certificates were presented by Dr Dee McCormack, of St Mary’s Surgery, the chair of the judging panel. The other judges were Mayor of Ely Ian Lindsay and local artist Ricki Outis.

Dr McCormack said: “There were so many wonderful posters that choosing the winners was a real challenge. The children had clearly put in a great deal of thought and effort and their messages were full of compassion.

“Everyone who took part should be very proud.”

Winners received a variety of prizes, donated by local businesses including Burrows Bookshop, City Cycle Centre, Ely Fudge Company, Razamatazz Magic Emporium, Tindalls, Toppings, WH Smith and Wilko.

The posters are being exhibited across Ely as part of a series of events organised by the ERRC to mark Refugee Week.

They were at Ely Library until yesterday and will be at ERRC’s Refugee Week meeting at The Maltings from 7pm tonight. Tomorrow they will go on display at the Old Fire Engine House Gallery.

A gallery of all the entries will also soon appear on ERRC’s website and Facebook page.

ERRC thanks everyone who was involved in the poster competition: the schools, childminders and parents, the shops that gave prizes, Ely Library and the Old Fire Engine House, and especially the “kind and compassionate” children who took part.

featuresThe breastfeeding counsellor for the Isle of Ely NCT group has been honoured and three volunteers have been highly commended in a regional ceremony recognising the charity’s volunteers and practitioners who go the extra mile.

Ely mum Megan Stephenson won the prestigious Parent Supporter award during the East of England heat of the NCT Volunteer Stars Awards on Saturday.

Held in Thetford, the ceremony celebrated the achievement of volunteers and practitioners dedicated to supporting new parents during their First 1000 Days – from the start of pregnancy to their child’s second birthday.

A familiar face at Isle of Ely NCT events, Megan has dedicated numerous years to volunteering at Bumps, Babies & Beyond, a free playgroup aimed at babies and toddlers that takes place at the Ely Methodist Church in Chapel Street on the first Friday of every month.

Megan regular opens up her house to new and expectant parents at a weekly Bumps & Babies group. Megan helps out new and expecting mums in her role as breastfeeding counsellor as well as responding to queries that come in via social media.

She has used her previous experience as Ely branch coordinator to help the branch, especially since the loss of her predecessor, Maxine Freeman, who was tragically killed during an accident on Queen Adelaide Road in 2014.

During last week’s ceremony, Caoimhin O Coileain and couple Lorraine and Brian Calvert, were highly commended for their contributions to the Ely NCT branch.

Caoimhin has worked hard to build trust and welcome parents to the branch and is the first NCT dad in the area to run his own NCTea, Tots and Toys group for expectant parents, parents, carers and children.

His citation said: “This is a great resource in an area which doesn’t have many facilities for families or good public transport links.

“His dedication and enthusiasm makes him an inspiration, plus he has a unique ability to make us feel that we are all parents together rather than mums or dads with separate roles.”

Lorraine is the first to greet new people to Bumps, Babies & Beyond and offer refreshments. As a result, three new regular volunteers have signed up including one who has set up a toddler group in an isolated rural community, another who has started a sling library and a third who helps regularly at Bumps, Babies & Beyond.

When Lorraine shared, via the Ely branch’s Facebook page, that she was suffering from postnatal depression, she “helped others to feel less alone”.

Meanwhile branch treasurer Brian has publicised Baby First Aid courses and always responds to requests with the result that they are consistently fully booked up a course ahead.

“He is an important volunteer, showing his support at the Nearly New Sales and encouraging other dads to consider volunteering.”

Winners of the regional heat and Diamond Jubilee Award Regional Winners will all be entered into the national heat.

Regional winners and a shortlist of Diamond Jubilee Award Regional Winner 2016 will be invited to the awards ceremony at City Hall, London on November 2.
