Happy New Year!! We hope you have had a lovely Christmas and wish you all the very best for the coming year.
Before Christmas, staff at the Colliery Offices have been busy moving rooms to improve the training facilities and workspace available for hire. Offices are currently available to hire with a range of rooms to suit different purposes, for example meetings, interviews and training. If you would like to discuss rates or size of rooms, contact Kelly on 01909 773348 or [email protected] for more details.
More training classes have been put on for 2008 and you can see a schedule of some of these planned for a January start on page 9. The training room have been re-vamped and the office and reception has now moved to Room 10. There is also a scheme running to help get you back into work, if you need help with interview techniques, CV’s, writing letters, basic IT or job-seeking, contact Julie on 01909 773348 and we can arrange for an appointment to discuss your needs.
This issue brings a Norwood Tunnel update and Steph Hryschko adds a touch of nostalgia with her tale of the 1957 Miss England contest winner. You can see a report from the Chair of the History Society on page 7
about the launch of the website on 28th November. The “In Focus” of this issue is dedicated to Wales High School on page 6.
Local lad Josh Hill, is pictured on the front cover during one of his races. Read about his success on the opposite page.

John, from all staff at the Colliery Offices, it has been a real pleasure working with you and we wish you all the very best in your new post – please come back and visit us very soon, we will miss you!

Pictured above is Josh with his recently obtained trophy.
Wales High School student Josh Hill started riding a quad bike off road at the
young age of eight. Three years later, he progressed to two wheels after visiting a mini motor race at Newark. Josh’s father Mark tells us “after buying Josh his own bike and practicing for two years – I could see his confidence raising and I was eager to try him in a proper race.”
In March 2007, Josh got a Polini GP3 4.2 which meant he could take part in races. He started practicing
on it straight away. As the season progressed, Mark saw a vast improvement in Josh’s riding style as he got faster and smoother. “I knew there was potential and he could do very well,” says Mark.
Team Hill 52 was born, and Josh travelled with his father to every round. In April 2007,
Josh started the Lucky Devils Mini Moto Championship which consists of 9 rounds - he finished top 10 in every round and finished a magnificent 5th overall at the end of the season - not bad for the first season in racing!
Josh will hopefully move up a class to the 4.2 lights for 2008. “I am very excited and I know there is more to come from Josh,” says his dad Mark. “He is getting better all the time and with a year underneath his belt, I believe he can have a really good go at the 4.2 light class”.
Josh is looking forward to racing next
season, “My ambition is to race in a replica helmet of James Toseland, that would be cool!” said Josh.
Mark Hill also has another reason to be proud. Josh’s sister Sidonie has been competing on the trampoline and achieved 5th place in Wolverhampton, 2nd place in Sheffield, 8th place in Nottingham and 2nd place in Worksop in November.
Well done Team Hill and good luck in your future competitions!
Paying tribute to the sponsors, Team Hill 52 would like to thank Drillwell
Ltd., Unistates Ltd., J.M.R. Lighting and Hosetech Hydraulics for their
sponsorship in 2007.
Pictured here is James Toseland, World Superbike Champion,
with Barry Marsh, Chair of the Wales Parish Council, at the switch on of the village lights.
We would like to congratulate James on his fantastic achivements for 2007 including being crowned regional Sports Personality of the Year.
James has also asked to have a brick in the community wall and will be coming to the opening event.
We would like to thank Mr Ray Alderton who recently sent us a letter after attending one of our 10 week Family History courses. We would
like to thank Ray for his kind words.
“I recently attended a ten week course on family history, which also included using computers, data storage and information transfer. Older people like myself do not find using computers easy, especially the terminology used, but this course was very relaxed and the tuition was very good. It is also a good way to meet people and share experiences, as older people can become isolated in their communities. I hope this type of course will continue in the future and maybe expand into other skills.”
In response to feedback Kiveton Creative have now obtained funding for stage 2 courses. Please call if you would like details on any of our courses: 01909 773348.

Norwood Tunnel
In the last issue we promised you an update in the first step of the opening of the tunnel. Here is the report from Keith Ayling Chairman
of the Chesterfield Canal Trust Ltd.Since the re-opening of Rotherham’s part of the Chesterfield Canal in 2003, attention has been drawn to the next big obstacle - the collapsed Norwood Tunnel. This 2880yd tunnel (opened in 1775) took the canal east-west from Wales in Rotherham into Derbyshire above the village of Killamarsh. A hundred years ago, on October 18th 1907, the tunnel finally collapsed and has lain undisturbed since then. Using £85k granted by Regional Development Agency Yorkshire Forward, the Chesterfield Canal Partnership has commissioned consultant engineers Arup to answer
the question ‘How can we forge the missing link on the canal to join Rotherham with Derbyshire once again?’ The emerging solution was spelt out at a ceremony attended by members of the Chesterfield Canal Partnership and representatives of the local community including the CDT and parish councils at the eastern portal of the closed
Norwood Tunnel near Kiveton Park on Saturday October 13th.Consultants Arup’s work so far suggests a radical solution - forget about a tunnel - let’s go up and over the hill on the surface! This is close to the 18th century canal engineer , James Brindley’s original solution, which involved a very much shorter tunnel at 630 yards, than the one finally con-structed. Under the new proposals about 500 yards of the tunnel at the eastern end will remain underground, before being lifted by two canal locks to ground level. The canal will cross the former Kiveton Park Colliery site, then rise by a series of locks to the summit. Although today the M1 motorway crosses the summit level above the former tunnel, a farm access and footpath which can be adapted to include the canal will allow a way under. More new locks will allow the descent through Norwood to join the top of the existing, although derelict, Norwood flight of locks, then on to Killamarsh following a new route through the Rother Valley Country Park. The prospect of a completely new canal for south Rotherham is an exciting development, as well as solving the most difficult engineering problem the whole restoration project faces - the long collapsed Norwood Tunnel. The Norwood Tunnel was an eighteenth century civil engineering masterpiece of the country’s major canal builder James Brindley, and his second in command John Varley. At the time of its construction it was the longest in the country, and a pioneering project, as there was no prior expe-rience of such lengthy and accurate tunnelling to draw upon. The tunnel was constructed by sinking a series of vertical shafts and then working horizontally from the bottom of each shaft until each connected with its neighbours. An exact level had to be maintained throughout. Only rudimentary tools - picks and shovels - were available to the navvies (navigators) in its construction, although the work, dangerous enough, was speeded up by the use of gunpowder. Candles would supply the only lighting. Started in 1771 the tunnel was finally completed in 1775, having used some three million bricks in the process. Not having a towing path for the horses, boats had to be ‘legged’ through by their crew, by laying on the roof of the boat and ‘walking’ along the tunnel walls.
Cruises provided by the Canal Trust were
held on the summit from Kiveton Park station
over the weekend 12 - 14 October
Members of the Chesterfield Canal Partnership celebrate the draft report at Kiveton Park on 13th October. Steph from the CDT is on the left of the picture.

Local AreayourWelcome Home June
Cooper!!!!As a child growing up in Kiveton in the 1950’s one of my earliest memories was of the first “graffiti”.
It was 1958 and someone had written in white paint “Welcome Home June Cooper” on the wall in front of the Old Rows. The letters must have been at least two feet tall and you couldn’t pass through Kiveton without noticing it.
It had been written because a Kiveton girl had been crowned “Miss England” and the community were very proud of “our June” in an era before beauty contests became taboo.
The title was very short lived as the organisers soon found out that June had been a few days too young for the minimum age entry.
Kiveton didn’t mind as they knew that she was still the most beautiful – official or unofficial!!
The writing stayed on the wall for years and no one even thought of removing it.
I was having this nostalgic conversation recently with Margaret Farnsworth, a student on one of our adult learner courses. It turned out that Margaret had been at school with June Cooper (now June Perkis) and still keeps in touch with her although she has lived in London for many years.
We began to hatch an idea.
Wouldn’t it be great if June had her name back on the wall in our dedicated brick project in the community garden and, even better, if she would “come home” for the opening of the dedicated garden building.
June said that she would be delighted and proud to do this.
We now have over £3,000 of brick orders, the plans are drawn and building work will start in the spring. Thanks go to Ken Chapman for his architectural skills and advice.
It is good to have so many community groups and businesses buying bricks – everyone from hair stylists to pub landlords, Rainbows to Red Road!!!
We look forward to a grand opening event in the summer.
It is not too late to have a family name, business or community group there for posterity. Please contact us on 01909 773348 or call in at the Old Colliery Offices for more details

School in focus:Wales High School
Our Aim as a Specialist College for
Business and Enterprise
To enrich the education process of all the
young people in our school through our
specialism, developing in them an awareness of the world of work and providing them with the enterprise skills necessary to be successful in their lifelong journey.
Young Chamber
During the past twelve months we are proud
to have launched the first Young Chamber
in mainland UK. The Wales High School
Young Chamber aims to enable the students
of the school to control their enterprise
environment. It was launched to all year
groups, who elected a representation
council. The councils then elected year
group presidents and vice presidents, before,
live on Hallam FM Lucas Brammer was
elected as the first President of the Wales
High School Young Chamber. The whole
Young Chamber programme is being run
in partnership with Rotherham Chamber of
Commerce.
The Young Chamber groups have begun
to set the enterprise agenda for their year
groups, developing marketplace events and
running whole day events for their year
groups.
In addition the school has made a member
of staff available to the Specialist Schools
and Academies Trust to take the lead in
the production of a resource guiding all
schools in the running of Young Chamber.
The aim of the resource is that it will be
made available to all schools in the country
through the DCSF enterprise unit.
Y7 and Y11 Enterprise Events
In the first term of this year the school
ran two major enterprise events. Both
were highly successful and were run in
conjunction with The Music Factory
Entertainment Group and Rotherham
Chamber of Commerce. The whole day
events were aimed at developing pupils
enterprise capabilities, such as teamwork,
problem solving, creative thinking,
organisation and planning skills and
developing a positive attitude.
Comments from staff and pupils in the
evaluations: “The whole event was really
worthwhile and I thought it was a good
benefit to the Year Group as a whole and
particularly one or two of the disaffected.”
“Pupils absolutely loved it! ‘Raved’ about it
for hours! Very well organised”.
Sixth Form Study visit to Barcelona
A group of 25 Business students had
the opportunity to visit a number of
international businesses in Barcelona during
October as part of a cultural study visit.
The students can then apply their course
learning in real situations strengthening
their understanding of the curriculum.
Pupil Opportunities

been made available because of the funding
from our Specialism. Some examples are
listed below:Community Summer Fair: Raise
awareness of the world of work in
theatre: Electronic amps project.

Schools Enterprise Education Network
Two years ago the school was asked
to take on a regional role in leading
South Yorkshire in the development of
enterprise education for all secondary
and special schools. To date all 4
sub regions (Rotherham, Sheffield,
Doncaster and Barnsley) have developed
networks of enterprising teachers
sharing best practice for the benefit of
the pupils in their schools. In addition
several conferences have been facilitated
by the school to spread good practice
in enterprise education. We have also
supported other schools in delivering
Business related subjects to improve
pupils attainment.
Primary Schools
Our cluster of primary partner schools
has developed a programme of enterprise
education for their pupils. We are
currently working with them to develop
enterprise opportunities for pupils in all
partner schools.
Wales High School – The place to be!
During July 2007, 45 delegates from
DCSF, Her Majesty’s Inspector of
Schools, Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, Scottish Schools,
Schools from across the UK and
Business and Enterprise Colleges from
Yorkshire and Humber visited the school
to attend an event at which best practice
was shared to enhance the education of
pupils at all schools.

Budding Young Poets From Kiveton and Wales Pre-School Daycare
At the beginning of October as part of a programme to develop creativity and literacy skills, some of the children from the Kiveton & Wales Pre-school Daycare
setting entered a competition called “My First Poem”. The children were helped to write their poem and then they dedicated it to someone special. Joanne Davis, Deputy Manager of the daycare, said “To the delight of the parents and staff most of the poems were selected for the publication in a book.” The book is called My First Poem by Yorkshire Children and will be produced in February 2008.

The launch of our new website took place on 28th November, the event was arranged to coincide with Annual General Meeting of The Kiveton Park and Wales Community Development Trust. Despite
atrocious weather the event was attended by over a hundred people.
I had great pleasure in outlining the tremendous work which has been put in by John Tanner, Tom Hill and Holly Greenhalgh. The website, despite a few problems at the
start, is now up and running and has been hailed as a unique vehicle in its field. Whilst the trio above have dealt with the technical aspects of the launch its success is undoubtedly due to the outstanding efforts made by members of the History Society.
One highlight of my evening was being asked to present Honorary Presidencies to Eddie Ashton and Lance Wilks, two stalwarts of our group. It is scant reward for the time and effort they have spent over the years exploring the history of this area and of the contribution they have made to both The Five Parish’s Group and The History Society.
My thanks must also go to all those who contributed their efforts on the night especially Ann Britton for her wonderful buffet, Brenda Bradley for her lovely confectionary and Joyce Cope whose mulled wine went down a treat.
The launch of the website is just the beginning. It is our intention that the History Society goes from strength to strength with new book launches, open days, exhibitions, and trips being organized for the forthcoming year. We are also seeking new members. Everyone is cordially invited to join our group. Our meetings take place bi-monthly at The Old Colliery Offices.

HOW TO LIFT DEPRESSION QUICKLY!
By Karen April Mills
Ask any depressed person if they want to feel ‘themselves’ or ‘better’ again, and they will usually respond with a resounding ‘yes’. Well, the good news is that they can regardless of how bad they feel. When treating clinical depression, counselling is used extensively in the form of Brief Solution Focused therapy, as well as relaxation techniques to help people with depression and anxiety to feel much calmer and less exhausted straightaway. I offer a specialised programme for clients on ‘How to Lift Depression Quickly’. This programme enables clients to learn and understand what is happening to them and why, before being gently guided through the steps to a full recovery. You will be amazed at the truth behind why depression occurs and how it is maintained. This programme is proven to be extremely effective in lifting depression for good, allowing you to take back control of your life that depression likes to steal away!
You should expect to start feeling much better after five sessions or probably even less. If you are a sufferer from depression, then I invite you to contact me for further information.
Disclaimer: Please note that I am not a qualified Medical Doctor. If you are taking any anti-depressant (or other) medication prescribed by your G.P. or any other Health Professional, DO NOT stop taking your medication without their permission.

The Trust WE ARE HERE TO HELP
One of the main aims of the Trust is to support and foster community development. We help local groups or
individuals access funding or training, to develop their ideas or to help them with constitutional advice.
A loose definition of community enterprise is a business that uses any profit it creates for community benefit, e.g. A group of people set up a small business making and selling birthday cards. They are paid a wage but any surplus profit is donated to a local charity or used to offer free card making
training. The second option would also class as a community enterprise because it is giving community benefit by passing on skills to local people. If the profit had simply been shared between the card makers this would be a private enterprise.
If you are considering setting up a small enterprise with products you make or a service you can provide, please contact us.
A community enterprise has great benefits not available to the private sector as you can access lots of start-up support with grants and training in business development.
