Originally “Hero”, the beer isnow called “Royal Anglian”.

The official launch was at TheDuke of Wellington on 5th Mayand it was a very proud day forLandlord Dougie Clarke. Thebeer was brewed in memory ofhis Grandfather, Sgt FrankClarke. His extraordinary First WorldWar story is told in a fasci-nating new book “Not quitethe Gentleman”, which was onsale in the pub.

The launch was attended by

Tony Hall, cartoonist on theEDP penned an originalcartoon which was raffled atthe launch and raised another£250. It depicts German troopsretreating, hands over theirears, as they are assaulted by“ze dreaded Englander WarPoets Regiment.”

Look for “Royal Anglian” inpubs across the region, buy apint (or two) and raise yourglass to unsung heroes, pastand present.

By the time you read this theWorld Cup 2010 will havekicked off and England will beon their way to winning thetrophy at long last. Well that'swhat beer goggles do for you?

I know a lot of Pubs & Brew-eries are celebrating the eventand I urge you to support yourlocal and enjoy the occasion. Ifit's your first time visiting a PubI hope you will continue toattend as it's a great experiencethat like me can last you a life-time.

As Summer approaches thereare more and more Beer Festi-

This might be yourfirst time at tasting Real Alesand Ciders and if you are inter-ested further then why not joinCAMRA. We have exciting tripsto Pubs and Breweries and wealways welcome new memberswho are never disappointed.

The General Election is over, oris it? With the coalition a lot ofpromises have been changedbut at least the Prime Ministerhas announced powers to givecommunities the right to buythe last pub in the village. This

is important in our rural countyand hopefully they will re-appoint a Pubs Minister whocan focus on the relevantissues. Regrettably due to aVolcano I was unable to attendthe Members Weekend in theIsle of Man, but full details arein What's Brewing the NationalCAMRA newspaper. However,it's clear our Branch makes oneof the largest contributions tothe Campaign and this isthanks to the continued helpfrom our members. Well doneand come on England.

Drinking for England

SUMMER 2010 | 5

It’s been a busy time since thelast edition of nips, Easter sawmany beer festivals.

On the Friday I went to the Fox& Hounds at Heacham a goodcrowd with good ales; I gatherthis was the trend for thewhole weekend.

On the Saturday a visit to theAngel at Swanton Morleywhich had 25 ales and 2 ciderson. Evening entertainment wasby an excellent band called“Polaris” and I finished thenight with the last pint out ofthe barrel of Green Jack RipperTripel at 8.5%, which couldexplain my loss of memoryover the trip home!

After this I decided to have aquiet Sunday night at theUnion Jack beer festival whichis walking distance but with afull house, music, some good“locAles” plus Bruce’s birthdaybash it turned into a ratherheavy late night session.

Mandy Barlow, Landlady at TheUnion Jack has now completedher research into the History ofthe pub and a copy of all thisinformation is on the bar.

After a week to recover it wasoff to the West Acre Stag Beerfestival, having been let downover the Marquee “Figgy” hadrun the festival with his barrelslined up along the back wall of

the bar! All went well and Igather this festival was assuccessful as any he has held. Then it was to the Wether-spoon’s festival. Bruce, Tonyand I were disappointed withthe Globe. The beer was verycold and two barrels were off.

One and a half hours later they

had not been changed, so offwe went to Wetherspoon’sother Lynn pub, the Latticehouse, where the beer was at theright temperature. Very goodales and there were seven on.Stig, Tim, Nige, Steve, Kev andmyself had a trip roundCambridge, starting at the RedLion, at Histon, having seenNige consume a large cookedbreakfast I was surprised hehad any room for beer, but heseemed to manage! (Except fordropping his compact camera inhis pint! Ed.)

On a nice sunny day it was verypleasant to be able to sitoutside in the garden. A goodday was had by all.

Hopefully summer has nowarrived and there are severalpubs with nice gardens in ourarea, the Lord Nelson,Burnham Thorpe, the Feathersand the Coach and Horses,Dersingham, Fox & Hounds,Heacham and the Globe, KingsLynn, To name a few. I lookforward to visiting some ofthem!

Finally I have just heard as I amwriting this that the Angel atLarling is Norfolk pub of theyear so congratulations toAndrew Stammers andeveryone at the Angel.

SUMMER 2010 | 7

Summer is definitely here.I can tell by the sound oftorrential rain on the conserva-tory roof as I write! Summer isthe season of all the Bs, beerfestivals, barbecues andburning pink English skin.

A time of year when stunningquantities of ale are consumedon the pretext of keeping cool,a time of year when my tastetends towards the lightercoloured hoppy beers.

Sitting under a tree in theshade or watching (for the nextfew weeks) football without thelarger drinkers noticing you arebeing ever so slightly nonconformist as they glug down

their patriotic Carlsberg, theVikings won after all!Chomping on a hot sausage(copyright T. Spitzer) and thenapplying cool beer as aconvenient fire extinguisher!

Only thing is I love drinkingoutside pubs and I don’t smokewhich means sitting in the“we’re out here ‘cause of you”smoking zone which existsaround most pubs.

I’m sure I’m being paranoidabout this but it does seem thatall outside areas are now domi-nated by smokers, which I findtends to make me stay inside.Anyway personal irritationsaside, plenty of festivals to

attend overthe next fewmonths andfor the historyminded the 70th Anniversaryof the Battle of Britain inSeptember. The reason that wedon’t have to say “eine grossenhefe wiezen, bitte” in pubs today!

A good excuse for some beernames in the Spitfire/ Hurricanemould I suspect.

I wish you all a long hot summer,if not it always looks betterthrough the bottom of a glass!

Stig - Chris Lucas Editor - West Norfolk Branch

By the time you read this, wewill know if we are getting theBBQ summer that we werepromised last year. I hope so;having re-landscaped thegarden (very, very thirsty work)it would be good to fire up theman cooker again and spendquality time with friends andfamily outside for once.

I have decided that my BBQ’sthis year will have a LocAletheme. Guests are, of course, welcome to pop into the localsupermarket on their way andbring bottles/cans of “I can’tbelieve some people think that

this is actually beer”. If theywant to. So long as they drinkit. Some left over? Well, I needmore slug bait.

No. I have decided that on theday, I will pop down to TheDog and Duck and come away(eventually- there is a qualitycontrol issue here) with 4 pintcontainers full of foaming alebrewed less than 30 miles or sofrom here. It’s all to do withsupporting local Pubs andBrewers, which is what LocAleis all about, after all.

So then I can offer a qualityproduct to go with the“caramelised”burgers and sausages.

In the few short months since Ibecame Editor, I have becomemuch more involved with theBranch and met some wonderful

people, some of whomcontribute to this magazine. What with First Friday Fives, etc., I can honestly say that there isnever a dull moment withCAMRA!

I was also very privileged toattend the launch of WolfBrewery’s Royal Anglian at TheDuke of Wellington and meetmembers of The 1st Battalion,The Royal Anglian Regiment, theyhave my deepest admiration.

So, if you are reading this andyou are not a member, or are amember, but have never beento an event, why not give it ago? Good beer, good pubs, good company, what is thereto lose? Have a great summer!

News from the West

It seems like I stirred up a bit ofa storm with my comments onthe Queens Arms in Kings Lynnon page 11 of the last issue ofNips. I have been assured thatwhilst the hand pumps are ‘gasassisted’ at no point does thegas come into contact with thebeer, and therefore it shouldnot affect the quality of theproduct. I don’t think that it issecret that I am not a great fanof Elgood's beer, so I wouldrecommend that instead oftaking my word, you visit theQueens and make up your ownmind. I would be interested inother opinions, so let us knowwhether you think I was beingunfair in my judgement.

Having said that aboutElgood’s, I have been to a few

events recently at the GreenQuay in Lynn, where they serveElgood’s bottled beers, and Iam becoming quite partial to abottle of their Double Newt.Perhaps there is hope for me yet.

Elsewhere in the west, we stillhave the closed pubs (such asthe Sportsman at West Winchand the New Inn on WoottonRoad in Kings Lynn) and several‘For Sale’ or ‘To Let’ notices –the most recent one that Iobserved being on theRetreat in Lynn. Fortunatelythere are some pubs which arebeing brought back to life, andjust reopened after havingabout half a million poundsspent on it, is the Ship at Bran-caster. It’s good to see that themodel ship is still a feature onthe wall outside. It’s now partof the ‘Flying Kiwi’ group runby chef Chris Coubrough. Youcan see pictures of the refur-bishment on the website whichare far more eloquent than myattempts at a description. I guess the food is excellent, although on our visit I just triedone of the 4 beers on offer. Ihad Adnam’s which was verygood. I would be reallysurprised if this place did notbecome a standard feature inthe colour magazines in thesame way as the Victoria atHolkham and the Hoste Armsat Burnham. It has the modernNorth Norfolk feel right downto the colour of the paintwork.

Being passionate about maps(with my own small collection)I was overwhelmed by my lookin the map room. I reckon thatif I ate there, the conversation

might be limited as I spent mytime gazing at the walls. It is not often that I comeacross a new place in the area, but recently we went out tothe Old Barn at Terrington St.John and I was pleasantlysurprised to discover thatalongside the fine meal I couldhave a pint of Greene King IPA.After we had eaten we nippednext door to the Woolpack, which has settled down into afine pub under its new owner.Three beers were on offer and Itried a seasonal beer fromRobinson’s of Stockport, a rarefind in this area. The staff wereinterested by Nips but disap-pointed not to be mentioned.‘Tell me something to put inthe next edition’ I suggested. ‘It’s a great pub’ was the reply. If only it was as easy as that toget a plug.

The end of the football seasonhas come rather to soon withthe mighty Shakers missing theplayoffs and languishing in 9thplace, but it does mean thatwe do not spend our weekendsvisiting all points of the countryfrom Torquay to Accrington, and we have had the chance toget around more locally.Recently we went up toLangham, near Holt to try theGood Beer Guide listed Blue-bell. This is a real old villagelocal, which has not yetsuccumbed to the poshificationof North Norfolk pubs. (I madethat word up, but you prob-ably know what it means) Onthe way back we called in atthe Albatros, which is an oldsailing boat, moored in Wellharbour. Across the gangplank

and down the steep stairs tothe hold and there is a nicelittle bar with a couple of smallbarrels racked up to dispenseWoodforde's beer by gravity. What a marvellous place tohave a pint and a Dutchpancake. They also haveregular live music. Check it outbut consider the return journeyback up those steps before youdecide to have that last pint!

You would think that after myadventures in the Queens thatI might be able to spot a fake Hand pump. This fine examplewas discovered in the Locksat Geldeston down on theSuffolk border in east Norfolk. It is very remote, being locatedabout a mile down a track nextto the river.

I made the mistake of using theSatNav to find it and the loca-tion given was right in themiddle of the said river. After along detour we approachedit from the correct (that is thenorth) side and, boy, was it

worth it! I can’t believe that Ihave lived in Norfolk for 30years and never been here. Fortunately there were otherbeers available. I think I hadGreen Jack, but for once thestar is the pub rather than thebeer. If you haven’t been –go.Now.

Our mission over in the Eastwas to try the Norwich branchpub of the year, the MarinersTavern in Great Yarmouth. Ithought that it would have tobe a wonderful pub to bebetter that our choice in theWest, Larling Angel, but itcame very close, offering asuperb selection of beers, inter-esting decor and a warmwelcome. Close by westopped in Gorleston to try theGBG listed Mariners Compass. It reminded me of a 30s styleMidlands roadhouse from theoutside, and again a warmwelcome, good beer and keenprices.

Another place we visited forthe first time in years was theRed Cat at North Wootton. It has been refurbished and wehave heard good reports, sowe called in for a quick pintand ended up staying allevening. It was good to have achat with Peter, the landlordwho is the forth generationform the family to run the busi-ness and he was telling us thatthere has been a real effort torefocus on the bar and not justthe hotel trade. It looks like itspaying dividends with a steadytrade of both diners and localshaving a drink in the verypleasant surroundings.Adnam’s and Wherry are both

on offer to tempt you.So the moral of this tale is thatthere are undiscovered pubswith great beer out there. Goand find them.

Post Script. As I finishedwriting my wife enquired aboutthe plans for this fine summerSunday. I decided to take myown advice and we went outto Andel Lodge, south of Lynnon the A10. We must havebeen past hundreds of timesover the years and never calledignoring the signs promisingfood and a public bar. Its a finelooking building with acomfortable bar decorated in avariety of styles, from brassanimals to leather armchairs.Disappointingly there was noreal ale. Once again I washaunted by Elwood’s, this timein the form of ‘Old Smoothie’.The staff were pleasant, although the barmaid had onlyjust been taught how to pour apint and I don’t think that shehad quite grasped the fact thatbeer was sold by volume. TheSunday lunch was of heroicproportions and very tasty. A place with great potential –it reminded me of EldertonLodge over in North Norfolk. Ifthey had decent draught beerit would be the perfect place totake granny for lunch. Didn’thit the jackpot this time – butwe will keep looking.

SUMMER 2010 | 15

Buckinghamshire Arms, Blickling A beautiful National Trust country pub right nextto the Hall. With Werry, Adnams bitter and WolfGolden Jackel on the handpumps. A half of thejackel (at £1.65) was old and tired, possiblyreflecting the dining clienteles’ preference forwine.

The Feathers, AylshamThis town local had beautiful brewery mirrors(Bullards and Bass) and three handpumps, onlyone of which had a beer on, Wells Bombadier. This promptly went off with no replacementready, Perhaps, on a Friday afternoon we werejust unlucky.

The Shed - Wroxham. What “Real ale” drinker wouldn’t enjoy having alocal pub with a permanent “Beer festival” ontheir doorstep. Well, if you live in Wroxham, then you’re lucky.

At the recently opened “Shed”, situated just offthe Avenues, there waits a wonderful selection of“Fifty” real ales for your delight, all in perfectcondition, (not that I had time to try them all)and with all day opening too.

Ales of various strengths, and all from localmicro breweries, keep the cellarman busy withtheir special method of keeping real ale farlonger than the usual four or five days, so that usdrinkers can enjoy the delights of his labour, andall at reasonable prices.

I can’t wait for my next excuse to visit Wroxhamand sample some more ales. You should try it,it’s well worth the hunt trying to find it.

Swan Inn - InghamIt's very sad when the only pub in a small villagecloses, but when one changes hands (as hashappened recently at the above) and the newtenant discourages the drinkers for those whowish to eat high class “Fish and chips”.

This now means travelling out of the village for adrink, (which can only be for one, due to thedrink driving) thereby encouraging people tostay at home instead of enjoying the companyof their friends and neighbours at the localhostelry. Furthermore, the refurbishment has notcatered for the disabled, with its dangerous steps.

Ferry Inn - StokesbySituated in a quaint clean and tidy village withits large green and rare village shop is the “FerryInn”, with the broads running alongside, aperfect setting.

Sadly the real ales consisted only of Adnams, which wasn’t in the best condition, and the dullinterior didn’t make things any better.

Maltsers - Ranworth The change of management is heading in theright direction, the removal of a 1950’s ‘boat’shaped bar, replaced by more covers for diners.

A general clean-up and the addition of someoutdoor protective covering from the summershowers should attract the boating holiday-makers.

Hopefully in time they will introduce one or twoother real ales. (Currently Woodfordes Wherry at£2.80 a pint and Speckled Hen direct from the cask.)

Pub Post-itsAs always, remember that these post-its are subjective and reflect the personal experience ofour correspondents. Please feel free to email your post-its in to [email protected] - andif you really like the pub, why not nominate it for next year’s CAMRA Good Beer Guide?

Great Yarmouth brewersLacons built a significantnumber of pubs – they had atied estate of over 300 pubswhen in 1965 they were takenover by Whitbread. Subse-quently, most have beensubject to change but theMagdalen Arms in Gorlestonbuilt in 1954 still retains asignificant amount of its orig-inal interior. Lacons pubs areeasily spotted due to the prolif-eration of their falcon trademark – at the Magdalen Armsyou will find ceramic plaquesspaced out regularly aroundthe exterior; a stone falcon overthe front door; and they evenappear at the top of the drainpipes. The pub is built of brickwith the odd row of pebblesand the date of 1954 appearson the Dutch gable end.

The original layout was publicbar on the left, lounge on theright and rear left small snugwith hatch and an office on therear right. The only changestook place in the 1980s whichsaw the area for staff reducedand a walkway created to linkthe two bars; also gaps createdto link the rear rooms to thebars. Original fittings thatremain include the rearsections of bar counter, originalfixed seating, 4 large originalradiators, a 1950s fireplace onthe rear right, and even thetables look like they could datefrom 1954. Also, in between

the strips of panelling on thewalls of the right hand bar, there are a number of crestsrepresenting the colleges ofOxford University – this locals’pub was originally planned tobe called the Oxford Arms.

If you look down the side ofthe building you will see a doorthat was blocked up in the1960s. It originally led to anoff-sales hatch to the side ofthe bar now hidden behind plypanelled walls. At the rear ofthe pub is the public bar on alower level and it is virtuallyunaltered for 80+ years with its

After a very close competition, the Angel at Larling hasbecome Norfolk CAMRA pubof the year.

Congratulations to AndrewStammers and his team forachieving such a high standardand being what a rural pubshould be, a combination oftop class beers, home madefood an a real reflection of the

local community. The pub hasbeen in family hands for a longtime, first being bought byAndrew’s ancestors in 1913.

His dad told me a great storyabout this, all agriculturalpurchases were finalised on afixed day each year, so the locallads made sure they turned upon what should have been theold publican’s last night only to

discover the exchange hadtaken place early and no freedrinks were available!

The Angel later fell under thecontrol of various breweriesuntil re-purchased from themby the Stammers family.

There are some superb familyphotos on the walls includingthe first Stammers landlordstanding in an easily recognis-able pub doorway. I’veincluded one picture which, Ithink shows why the Angeldeserves its victory.

Finally I would like to say that itwas a very tight decision andthat the Mariners in Yarmouthare also doing a fantastic job, keep up the good work!

Chris Lucas

West Norfolk visit Norwich | NORFOLK NIPS

As mentioned in the Chairman’s contributionMandy Barlow, Landlady at the Union Jack, Roydon hasresearched and produced a history of the pub includingthe life of the building before it became a pub.

Being in the building when it is not teeming withcustomers, which is it’s normal state, she has seenor sensed two ghostly presences which encouragedher to find out more about the old building.Built in the early 1800s to replace a house of the1730s, it was home to the Carter family until the1880s.

The most interesting occupants were a brother andsister Thomas and Mary Anne, who never marriedliving in the house till 1882 dying within months ofone another, certainly they would be my candi-dates for ghosts.

One of the family was a “Pig Ringer”, you think youknow the countryside then you hear a term that’scompletely new.

The “Jack” became a pub in 1884 evidence of thiswas found on a wooden panel found in 1992 butsince lost again. The pub was owned by a succes-sion of breweries until 1996 and had the words“Union Jack” on the gable end.

The name changed in ’96 to the Blacksmith’s Armsbut has now returned to the original with even theold pub sign being saved from a skip to be restored.

Congratulations to Mandy for doing this work, I canonly encourage other publicans to do the same.

Pubs are all about tradition!

Since a certain prominent highstreet pub morphed into anantique shop five years ago Ibelieved that there are fourwatering holes to visit in thisold Broadland town. Sadly Iarrived (on me bike) to findthat the Kingfisher had closedlast year. As extinct as the signimplies.

Still, three more birds to ringstarting with the Grebe. Noreal ale but lots of customersand a community feel to it. Fizzwas £2.80 a pint and therewere half a dozen beers avail-able in bottle form. There is nopub sign so a birder might feeluncomfortable being unable toidentify to species but the fretwork above the bar saidunequivocally, Great Crested.

The Grebe was bombed in thewar and photos inside show itprewar as a Morgans houseand impressively rebuilt after-wards as S&P. Two civilianswere killed in the raid and they are commemorated in thesubstantial mediaeval church tower.

Across the road to the Swan,an Adnams house selling bitterand Broadside, with the latterat £3 a pint and in good nick. There is also a bird of prey onthe wall outside, a falcon, revealing the Inn as ex-Lacons.

Finally, half a mile south (as theheron flies) on the Greenstands the Harnser. The oldpub sign is inside the pub andis a lovely work of art. Unfortu-nately the Nelsons Revenge (at

£3.10) was tired but I couldn’tbring myself to give the GK IPAand its shiney chrome dispensefont a go.

Have you identified the townyet? From a drinking man’spoint of view it was a slightlydisappointing visit to Stalham. It can’t all be blamed on Tescos.

It was a warm day in May, justright for a beer or two. Unfor-tunately, Graham Freeman,Warren Wordsworth and MikeBaldwin had a meeting toattend. Fortunately, it was atWoodfordes Brewery in Wood-bastwick.

There they met Neil Baines,Head Brewer, for a conductedtour of the premises. And veryimpressive it was too. Thepremises have an agriculturallook to them, in keeping withthe rural surroundings, butinside you realise that a lot ofinvestment has gone into stateof the art kit to ensure consis-tent high quality ales.

So, is everything new? Well, maybe not. Woodfordes beganbrewing in 1981 in an Indus-trial Estate in Drayton,Norwich. However, tempera-ture fluctuations and variablemains water quality did notmake for consistent qualityales, so they moved to TheSpread Eagle in Erpingham, near Aylsham.

Following a disastrous fire, which meant that brewingwas undertaken byMauldons in Suffolk, theyeventually moved to thepresent premises in Wood-bastwick, which has thebenefit of having its own boreholes.

And this is what isn’t new. Tests have shown that thewater, which is very low in nitrates, dates from the Bronze Age!

In 2001-3 the Brewery under-went a major expansion whichmore than doubled productioncapacity and included six addi-tional fermenters, automatedcask washing (no cask “sniffer”here) a cask racking system, automated cleaning system,

new beer store and Shop/Visitorcentre.

The two cottages, adjacent tothe Brewery, originally used asoffices, have been convertedinto the Brewery Tap, The Fur& Feather Inn.

It was here that we were ableto sample some of Woodfordesexcellent Ales. The new beerfor the 2010 FIFA World Cup,Game On, was about to belaunched at Carrow Road.Casks were in the store, but itwas not yet in the Tap. Thebeer had undergone severaltrial brews before they werecompletely satisfied with it.However, the final trial brewwas available for us to drink, simply branded as “Cask 78”.

Hmm, if my memory serves mecorrectly, England failed toqualify for the ’78 World Cup,but we are there this timeround and if we can matchWoodfordes, quality andconsistency – who knows?

As they say – Game On!

32 | SUMMER 2010

Some of the best real alefriendly pubs in our county canbe found in the many townsand villages situated along theNorth Norfolk coast. Until fairlyrecently, many of them were abit difficult to visit unless youhad your own transport.Nowadays however they aremuch more accessible thanksto the ‘Coast Hopper’ busservice. If travelling fromNorwich, a “Bittern Line Rover”ticket at just £7 gives you adays unlimited travel, jumpingon and off where and whenyou like anywhere on both ‘TheBittern Railway line’ betweenNorwich Cromer and Sher-ingham and on “The CoastHopper” bus service whichruns from Cromer through toHunstanton and on to KingsLynn stopping at virtually all

the Norfolk coastal towns andvillages This summer sees theintroduction of a half hourlyservice in each direction duringthe daytime.

On a fine sunny spring Aprilday Graham Freeman andmyself decided to take ‘TheHopper’ and sample thedelights of some NorthNorfolk’s hostelries. First wetravelled by train to Sher-ingham and after a quick stopto admire the new levelcrossing that has recently beeninstalled linking The NorthNorfolk Railway to NetworkRail, we boarded the CoastHopper bus to Wells.

The first pub we visited wasThe Ark Royal, situated closeto the harbour front. A fairly

good range of beers includingWoodforde’s Wherry GreeneKing IPA and Abbot, Marston’sPedigree and John Smiths Caskwere on sale here.

Next we decided we wouldgive nearby Whinhill Cider alook in and sample some oftheir ciders. Neither of us areexperts on cider but ownersJim Ferguson and Pete Lynngave us a warm welcome andwere very helpful giving ustasting tips about their ciders.During our stay here we shareda refreshing bottle of their‘Majors’ and ‘Browns’ bottledciders. For anyone visiting WellsWhinhill Cider is highly recom-mendable. It is open weekendsin June then every daytimeexcept Mondays during Julyand August.

By this time we were feeling abit hungry so it was off to oneof the many fish bars along theharbour side for a fish and chiplunch. Next we gave one of ourfavourites, The Albatros alook in. For those not familiarto Wells, The Albatros is a 19thcentury Dutch sailing clipperthat has been more or less apermanent feature at Wellsharbour since 2001. Availableas usual were a choice of twoWoodforde’s beers Wherry andNelson’s Revenge. During ourvisit we had chat with Dutch

owner Ton Brouwer whoreported that sales had beenvery poor during this coldwinter with few visitors butfortunately things had pickedup and they had had a verysuccessful Easter and he waslooking forward to anothersuccessful summer season inWells.

After leaving The Albatros westrolled up Staithe Street to TheEdinburgh at the top of the hill.Real ales on sale here wereWoodforde’s Wherry, Nelson’sRevenge and Draught Bass.

Next it was back onto theCoast Hopper for the short rideto Blakeney where we stoppedat The Kings Arms. As usuala large range of real ales wereavailable that included AdnamsBitter and Broadside, GreeneKing Old Speckled Hen,Marston’s Pedigree and Wood-forde’s Wherry, which weopted for, which was dispensedfrom the barrel. Feeling peckishagain we ordered some deli-cious fresh local crabsandwiches for our tea.

Soon we were back on the busagain for our return to Sher-ingham. While on the bus welearned from a fellow travellerthat Norwich City had wonone nil at The Valley andsecured promotion back to theChampionship.

On arrival at Sheringham wewondered down the HighStreet. First stop in Sheringhamwas The Windham Armswhere available was Wood-forde’s Wherry and Norfolk

Nog, Wolf’s Straw Dog and‘Royal Anglian’ a new brew toraise money for The Royal AnglianRegiment Benevolent fund plusHumpty Dumpty’ s BroadlandSunrise and Little Sharpie.

After the Windham Arms wewalked down to the sea frontand took a look in The Crownwhich had Adnams Bitter andBroadside plus Greene KingAbbot available and The TwoLifeboats where a choice ofAdnams Bitter and Broadsidewere available.

Altogether this was a great dayout. There are very many moregood pubs along this routewhich we didn’t have time tovisit, but maybe with thesummer still ahead, next time!

On a bright and sunnySaturday morning this March, members from Norwich &Norfolk and West NorfolkCAMRA met together for along over due inter branchsocial. We first met at The JollyFarmers in North Creake. Aftera pint or two there we movedon to the nearby village ofBurnham Thorpe, famous forbeing the birth place ofAdmiral Lord Nelson where wevisited The Lord Nelson publichouse.

Here we sampled some of theirbeers and were treated to goodbuffet. A few of us tried theirlocal favourite, “Nelson’sBlood”. This drink is thought tohave derived from the end ofthe battle of Trafalgar whereNelson although victorious, gave his life in the battle. Hisbody was returned to Englandfor a great State Funeral. Thisinvolved a long sea passage

and to preserve his body, it wassaid to be submerged andpickled in a cask of Brandy.Nelson was much loved, andhis courage, skill and gallantryso admired by his crew, thatduring the dark hours theywould creep out and drinkfrom the cask containing hisbody, praying they wouldinherit some of his traits.Today’s drink which is brewedto a secret recipe is a uniqueblend of Navy Rum herbs and spices.

After a few drinks and food atThe Lord Nelson we continuedon to The North Norfolk coastand visited The Jolly Sailors atBrancaster Staithe. The Bran-caster Brewery after a shortperiod of being closed hasrestarted brewing again andthis gave us the chance tosample a few of their newbeers.

Last port of call on the wayhome was a quick drink at TheOstrich at South Creake.

Our chairman Buff has alreadytold you of his Easter beerfestival extravaganza.

I just can’t compete, so I’ll tellyou about a new addition toWest Norfolk beer festivals, thefirst Thetford beer festival.

Held in the Carnegie roomsover the early May bankholiday, the festival which wasnon CAMRA was organised bythe Black Horse and theManager of the Royal BritishLegion Club.

A good range of locally sourcedreal ales were available plus animpressive selection of real cider.

A hog roast was available andgood live music provided a

pleasant background to theevent.

When I visited you could detecta distinctly colonial accentamongst the bar staff, who dida great job.

By all accounts a good numberof people attended and verylittle beer was left over.

On talking to customers theonly criticism voiced was thatthe beer prices were a littlehigh, but obviously as a firstattempt it is hard to judge thecorrect level.A great first effort, alreadyplanned to continue next year,a welcome improvement in thelocal real ale culture.

Summer is icumen in

SUMMER 2010 | 41

About time too! Here, wehope, are the long lazy days(and balmy evenings) that wemissed so much over thewinter. How better than tospend some time at the pub?Not crowded in some airlessbar, albeit they are muchimproved since the smokingban, but out in the garden, patio, or other open air space.

As pubs have evolved over theyears in their attempt to woocustomers back, several havedecided to focus on makingthemselves more ‘familyfriendly’. Doubtless many of ushave memories of being left inthe garden, or even the carpark, as children. Pubs werestrictly for adults, and noattempt was made to offeranything for children. Thingshave changed, and several now

offer safe gardens, with playareas and toys. One of the besthas always been the Feathersat Dersingham. I wellremember seeing rows of tricycles and other brightlycoloured vehicles lined up as ifon a starting grid. This was atopening time – they didn’t staylined up for long! As parentsoften say: ‘If the kids arehappy, I’m happy’. And with apint or two from the bar for theadults, everyone was delighted.

Catering for a slightly less juve-nile clientele, the Globe inKing’s Lynn has a long gardenstretching down to the river. There are tables in abundance, and it’s a pleasant spot to whileaway an hour or two.

Last summer, with some friendsvisiting from Cheshire, we wereeager to show off the superiorweather in Norfolk and spent avery happy Sunday afternoonin the garden of the LordNelson at Burnham Thorpe.Bright sunshine (parasols avail-able for the faint-hearted),great beer, and excellent foodfrom the barbecue as well as achat with the landladypersuaded our friends that‘down South’ (as they think ofit) is ‘all right’. We, of course, have always known this.

When the redoubtable Lucilletook over the Woolpack atTerrington St. John, as well ascompletely renovating and

extending the interior, she setabout creating a garden wherethere had been little before.Up at dawn, she worked for afew hours before returning towelcome her customers.Lucille and Barry may have left, but the garden remains andthe pub is still worth a visit.

The Ancient Mariner, attached to the Le StrangeArms Hotel, has a pleasantpatio offering views over theWash. It is a popular venue forfood as well as fine beer, so ingood weather it can be difficultto find an outdoor table. Getthere early!

For a less conventional outdoordrinking spot, try the deck ofthe Albatros, a hundred yearold Dutch clipper moored inthe harbour at Wells next theSea. In addition to excellentbeer, there is an extensivemenu of pancakes. The Alba-tros also hosts regular musicsessions.

A final suggestion: WestNorfolk has some beautifulcountryside, so why not try apicnic. Just remember to stockup on some beer to accom-pany it. Try the Real AleShop at Branthill Farm nearWells. If cider is your thing, goto Whin Hill Cider in Wells.Whatever you do, and wher-ever you drink, make the mostof summer!

So Norfolk Nips & Cask Force, how does it get to you?

Well, in the Norwich & NorfolkBranch area its something likethis. Once a quarter, thepublishers deliver the maga-zines to a top secretdistribution base in Norwich, also known as The Fat Cat.

When this happens the wordgoes out via email, facebook, yahoo group message andgood old fashioned telephonethat the latest issue is ready fordistribution. A small butgrowing team of dedicatedvolunteers, including somelandlords and brewers, thendescend on the Fat Cat, a hard-

ship I know, to pick up thequantity of magazines theyrequire for their delivery routes. These routes can vary from asingle pub to, in some cases, almost the whole eastern coastof Norfolk! Some even dropcopies off at other pick uppoints for other volunteersunable to make it into Norwichto distribute further afield.

For some of the more remotepubs where we have beenunable so far to find people todeliver the magazine, copiesare sent via mail, a few make itout of the county via thismethod as well. So if you arereading this that’s how it got toyou. We are always on the look

out for extra help with thedelivery of this ever morepopular magazine, especially inthe towns and villages outsideof Norwich. So if you think youmay be able to help pleasesend an email to [email protected] me where you are or thearea you can deliver to and Iwill get back to you with anypubs that we need copies to goout to.

Requests for help will also bepublished on the Branch Face-book group. Remember themagazine is also availableonline atwww.norwichcamra.org.uk/nips/nips001.htm.

60 | SUMMER 2010

Over the last few months planning and preparation hasbeen under way for the 33rdNorwich Beer Festival, as mostpeople know the festival doesnot just magically appearovernight, and suddenly disap-pear a week after, it takes a lotof effort by a dedicated bunchof enthusiasts.

With the logo announced, other parts of the planningprocedures can kick off, ordering glasses, designingposters, working out merchan-dising quantities etc. This yearslogo competition was won byKate Mavilio, with her depic-tion of a Dragon (surprise!) anda pumpkin, well done to her.

I was very pleased with thereaction to the change in thebeer range that we instigatedlast year, and hopefully weshould be able to offer a morebalanced portfolio of beerstyles, suppliers permitting. As you may know wholesalebeer prices have increasedquite a lot over the last year, due to a variety of factors,English hop quality, taxincreases to name but two. But we will endeavour to selectto keep the rise to you, ourcustomer to the minimumpossible.

Staffing the festival is always aconcern, we rely on the goodwill of our many volunteers togive up some of their free time,

to help, if any of you readingthis could possible spare a fewhours we would be mostgrateful. If so please don’t hesi-tate to contact me or ourstaffing officer Mark Stimpson, details can be found on ourwebsite at www.norwichcamra.co.uk/festival/staffing.htm.

We also have this year, twitterand blogs atwww.twitter.com/norwichbeerfest,norwichbeerfestival.blogspot.comrespectively to keep youinformed of what’s is going onas well as a facebook page.Hope to see you in October!
