to all of you and good luck. Our Chap-ter Newsletter won third prize in the Chapter Newsletter contest. Thanks to Johanna Roberts and Robert Lebkuecher for putting out great Newsletters. We also want to thank Bonita and Dick Long for making the centerpiece again this year. They al-ways do an amazing job, and this year they couldn’t even attend the Rally. We can’t overlook Henry Finn and Robert and Janet Lebkuecher, who competed in the bike games and won several trophies for their efforts. Well done all! Next, came the Poway Parade, we had a great turnout for it. Thanks to Joyce Elmore for getting everything set up with the officials in Poway and to Henry Finn, for leading our group. We had a small turnout for Nevada A’s Jackass Run this year, which is really a shame, because they have supported our Fun Run in the past. Let’s hope they do so again this year. The Jackass Run was fun; the poker ride went out into the desert and some pretty roads. I always like roads that I have not been on. It did get hot but the casino was air- condi-tioned. Our last drive in movie night had a small turn out but we still had fun and Kay and I and Dana and Carol stayed for both movies.

FROM THE HEAD FOX
It’s hard to believe its October already and our annual Fun Run is only a few weeks away. We want to give a big thank you to Bud and Mary Brinker for stepping up as Fun Run Co coordina-tors. Couldn’t have done it without you. We also want to thank all those that stepped up to be leads, and eve-ryone else who assisted in making this year’s Fun Run a success. A lot of time and hard work was put into our event. We hope all of the fox’s have sent in their registration forms. Re-member, this is your Chapter and your support is needed. If you don’t normally participate in Chapter func-tions or you are new to the Chapter, why not come on out and meet some of your fellow members, have some fun and make new friends that have the same love of riding as you do. The envelope stuffing party is at the Brinker’s the 16th at 6:30pm. Help is always appreciated. Watch the e-mail for address and more information. September was another busy month, starting with District Rally in Bakers-field over Labor Day weekend, where two of our own have stepped up to be Region Directors, Anita and JR Alkire have assumed the position of both District and Region F Directors until
January 2010 when Bill and Rene John-son take over District helm and Anita and JR continue with Re-gion. Congratulations
We’d like the Thank All the people that Donated Door Prizes

PLP has started again. I want to thank Henry Finn for getting the Chapter the use of the parking facility at his place of business. The doughnuts are good and the practice is always fun. Riding in a controlled environment allows you to hone those riding skills making you a safer rider. Come on out. The one for this month is the 17th. Last but not least, thanks to everyone who planned, led or attended all the Chapter functions for the month. Hope to see you all for this months functions. Keep checking the calendar and the e-mails for upcoming events or last minute changes to the calendar. Ride safe and keep the dirty side down.

Golden State Gem California District Director
Anita and JR Alkire
We really did have an awesome Dis-trict Rally! As we have looked back it was so great to see all the costumes, what a fun era for dress up, the fun with the games, the full bingo hall, classrooms overflowing with students and a spectacular closing banquet with very creative centerpieces de-picting the Roaring 20’s. We want to thank all of you who came to share the rally with us and we want to thank our incredible staff who all worked hard before, during and after to bring the fun to you.
So is it true and what does it mean? Yes, JR and I stepped up to the Re-gion F Director position. Thanks to all of you for making California such a great District which resulted in our being asked to spread the fun and games that we have enjoyed over the past years with the rest of the region. What states are in the Southwest Region? California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Hawaii. So our trips will be longer as we get to ride the great territory of the southwest, but we will continue to travel our great state as well and we’ll get to as many poker runs and bake sales that we can. We are excited to step into this position and we’ll work hard making sure that the region “makes a difference one member at a time”.
So instead of putting on a District Rally, we’ll be putting on Region F’s Rally, West Wing 2, The Winger Family Beach Party. We lucked out as the rally location was already cho-sen before we stepped up and how nice it will be for it to be in our home state! The rally will be at the Orange County Hilton/Costa Mesa, a fantas-tic hotel and we’ll have an early bird start day on Thursday, with bingo, a movie and free pizza. Opening cere-monies will be Friday followed by a pool party, beach style with free ice cream. On Saturday we’ll have a banquet dinner and entertainment and then conclude the event on Sun-day with an afternoon awards cere-mony and in the evening we’ll have our closing ceremonies along with a professional comedy talent show, similar to the talent show last year at West Wing 1 and that will be accom-panied by a $2.00 In-and-Out burger, chips and drink. All throughout the weekend we’ll have great seminars and loads of vendors. The planning is exciting and we look forward to welcoming you! What the Region F website for more details.
We will be attending the New Mexico District rally while many of you will be enjoying Camp Nelson and 2A’s fa-mous spaghetti! We’ll come home for a couple days and then head up to CAC’s Harvest Run and on the
9
10th of October we’ll attend the V Run. We’ll take a family break to celebrate Dad’s birthday and then at the end of the month we’ll have 1F’s Halloween run on the 24th followed by 1Z’s Naked run on the 25th, an-other back to back weekend so you can travel and stay the night and get 2 rallies for 1 weekend. Then over Halloween we’ll be at Lake Havasu for the Arizona District Rally. So Oc-tober will be a busy month which will also include San Diego’s Ride for Kids.
As our tenure with the District is winding down, Bill and Rene John-son, your District Directors as of January 1, 2010 are busy winding up for their tenure. Bill has asked the Chapter Directors to ask all of you how you would feel about having next year’s District Rally in Mam-moth? This should be as much fun as Tahoe with a more affordable price tag. The accommodations will be condo style but in a single resort unlike Tahoe. There are 1 bedroom units which will be about $140/night including taxes; a 2 bedroom unit will be about $118/bedroom/night and the few 3 bedroom units will go for about $110/bedroom/night, on all prices the taxes are included. It may sound expensive but being it’s condo style you’ll be able to cook a meal to off-set some of the cost. Let’s face it a breakfast at a hotel will run you about $10/person and if there is 2 of you that’s $20/day savings that effectively reduces the room rate. So please let your Chapter Director know how you feel so they can
get back to Bill so he’ll know how to plan for next year’s rally. Bill and Rene and their new staff will bring new and exciting fun to our District and we’re so pleased that they will be taking over the reins in January. (just a thought you might invest in a squirt gun for safety J)
So as we head into fall and the leaves
start to turn and it will get darker ear-
lier be extra careful out there.
Whether traveling by bike, trike or car,
the shadows will change and we need
to be extra alert so we can stay safe.
It’s probably time to go out and attend
your chapter’s PLP and brush up on
some skills. Don’t forget also that our
clothing needs are going to change as
well. Find those heavier gloves, neck
warmers and test out your electrics so
you’re ready for that brisk temperature
that some of the women around you
will completely enjoy J So plan ahead
now so that your fall riding will be as
pleasurable as you can make it and
we’ll see you on the road. Be safe, be
happy and keep smiling!

We had 56 CA1F folks attend along with 1 prospective new member (Bill the submariner). John & Rocki also had their son (Ryan) from up north join us. Ryan is an associate member already. It was good to see Richard Simmons out wearing his walking cast. Congratulations Bud & Mary for the new addition to your family. I think the turnout was great for a Sunday breakfast in lieu of the normal Saturday Breakfast. Thanks everybody for turning out. We missed those that couldn’t make

Two Up = Heads Up by Jackie Vaughan
The person who occupies the back seat of a motorcycle has always been called the passenger. Now they’re called co-riders and it isn’t simply to be politically correct. The word passenger suggests a person who has no responsibilities for the operation of the machine; one who is simply along for the ride. A co-rider, on the other hand, shares some of the responsibilities for the safe operation of the motorcycle.
Sitting in the back seat means a lot more freedom to enjoy the scenery without worrying about the technical part of the ride. But with the free-dom comes the responsibility. A co-rider does not have the right to bury herself in a book or to take a nap. A blanked out person on the back seat is of absolutely no help and may even be an additional danger if the ride has to brake or swerve sud-denly. Her reflexive actions (such as to grab the rider wherever she can or to lean away) will probably be exactly the wrong ones.
The co-rider should ride as exactly that, a co-rider. Not a passenger, but a second rider. While it is al-ways preferable that the co-rider has had a motorcycle safety course, even the normal street skills used in everyday driving will help in spotting hazards. Being an extra pair of eyes
for the rider doesn’t mean being a back-seat nag. It means spotting haz-ards and knowing how the rider nor-mally reacts and being ready to help in that effort. If the rider does not show that reaction, the co-rider should speak up. An experienced co-rider knows how hard her rider brakes dur-ing normal braking, and whether hard-line braking will be necessary. She prepares herself by holding the grab rails and bracing her feet. She does not slide forward, banging helmets and pushing the rider onto the tank. When she spots a pot hole or a large piece of rubber, she knows her rider will soon swerve, and she is prepared to let the bike move under her. She knows when it’s OK to move around, and lets her rider know when she will make a move, such as scratching her ankle, which will affect the balance of the bike.
The rider also has the responsibility to communicate with his co-rider. He should let her know when a nasty bump is coming or if he wants to counterweight a turn. He shouldn’t play “surprise” just because he finds her reactions funny.
Two-up riding is a team sport. And that means working together to make the ride fun and safe for both.
