The cover of European Radiology with the Crossed Keys of St Peter and the Episcopal Crown.

The Master Writes

2014 has been a good year for the College with satisfactory examination results and the completion of the new Whittle building. The new building was much admired by many at the Donors’ Garden Party in September, at which stage much of the ground floor was open for inspection.

Of course, the Garden Party was not just celebrating the new building but also the refurbishment of Fen Court and the multiple refurbishments around the College which were the objective of the late Neil Plevy’s appeal. It was wonderful to see Neil’s father and family at the Garden Party to which so many Petreans have so generously subscribed. Thanks are also due to Richard Grigson and Ian Wright, the two Bursars involved, and to Dr Saskia Murk Jansen for bringing the appeal to its most satisfactory conclusion. Now that the buildings are reasonably up-to-date, we hope, to maintain the fabric of the College in a more systematic fashion via the rekindled Buildings, Gardens and Fabrics Committee.

Anne and I much enjoy meeting members of the JCR and MCR Committees at the beginning of each academic year. Obviously members of the JCR were disappointed that the rooms in the Whittle building were not quite ready for the start of term in October. However the rooms

will be greatly enjoyed from January 2015, along with the new JCR (Sexcentenary Club), bar and other facilities. Despite this inconvenience, all members of the College realise how lucky they are to have wonderful rooms within/close to College, compared with members of other Colleges and other Universities. During my visits to campuses elsewhere in the world, I realise exactly how fortunate Petreans are with respect to accommodation! Members of the MCR are also very grateful with regards to housing. All resident members of the College are grateful for the ongoing generosity that has provided such excellent accommodation.

Now that the accommodation needs have largely been addressed, the next main objective will be to secure funding to offset the increasing costs of higher education for students. Nowhere is this more acute than at the Graduate level, particularly in the Arts. Funding for an

Arts PhD from Arts Councils, etc is very limited. And to compound the felony, it seems impossible to embark on a PhD without a good result in an MPhil for which external funding is virtually impossible. Thus it is pleasing that various endowments with the College can be used to award grants to deserving students via the Research Studentships Committee. We very much hope that these specific endowments will be augmented in the coming years and supported in a matched way by the University and other organisations. In the ideal world, any student deemed worthy of postgraduate research by University Departments and the College should be entitled to receive substantial support.

As always, there were some stellar results in examinations including a Petrean

becoming the Second Wrangler in mathematics (like Lord Kelvin) and a whole clutch of Firsts in English. Graduate students continue to perform excellent research and two of them kindly repeated their presentations from the Graduate Symposium, so that alumni could hear what they were up to at the Annual Gathering. The Annual Gathering itself was somewhat overshadowed by the tragic death of Michael Burrell, the Peterhouse Society Chairman. Michael’s many friends

in the world of the theatre, including Sir Ian McKellen, gave him a great send- off at St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden in November.

On a personal level, I completed my term as Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology in December 2013 and was pleasantly surprised when Springer Verlag celebrated this with a festive cover to the Journal, which amusingly incorporated the Crossed Keys of St Peter as well as seasonal motifs.

I also managed to complete a 35 year stretch as a consultant radiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, but it is now time to hang up my metaphorical stethoscope. I had hoped that this might give me more time for College matters, but Parkinson’s Law seems to apply with regards to extracurricular duties. Or maybe it is just me getting older. The arrival of our first grandchild justifiably allows our children to call me grandpops – an ageing term if ever there was one!

From the Development DirectorWelcome to the new-style Newsletter!

Over the last few years a number of Petreans have mentioned that they would appreciate more news about what is happening in the College as a whole, so we decided to take the opportunity of completing the first phase of the Development Campaign launched in 2004 by Neil Plevy to make a few changes. The Master also suggested that the Newsletter should be published before Christmas and should reflect activities in the previous academic year rather than the calendar year. I hope that you enjoy reading it – if there is anything you would like to know more about, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Reflecting the end of the first phase of the Development Campaign, the list of donors at the back of this issue includes those whose donations were received between January 2014 and the end of the academic year 2013-14. Donations received in Michaelmas will be acknowledged in the next Newsletter.

In September we celebrated reaching the target set by Neil Plevy with a Garden Party for all donors to the Campaign – there is a photo report of the event towards the end of this Newsletter. We have together managed to achieve most of the aims set out by Neil – those we have not been able to complete will be carried over into the next phase, most notably the refurbishment of the organ. However, the main focus of the next phase of the

Development Campaign will be graduate scholarships to enable the best students to pursue further study without increasing their burden of debt.

This year has also seen some changes in the Development Office. After 18 months with us, Giovanni Zappia found a permanent position within the University and in July we appointed Holly Ashcroft to the team as our full-time Alumni and Events Officer. Holly and Alison will be working together to keep in touch with Petreans and to

organise events. We will be moving to K Staircase in January. Please come and see us in our new office!

We very much hope that you will take the time to visit the College. You are always most welcome. It is very helpful if you could let us know that you plan to visit – that way we can be sure that there is someone here to welcome you. This is particularly so during the summer when there are fewer people in the office. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Mathematics in Peterhouse

Dr András Zsák has been a Fellow since 2008. He came from Hungary and his field is pure mathematics. He is our Director of Studies in Mathematics and also one of our Admissions Tutors. Here seen in the Ward Library with the facsimile Ramanudjan notebooks.

The College has recently been looking to increase the strength in mathematics so we were delighted to be able to take advantage of the appointment of a new University Lecturer in Applied Mathematics to offer them a Fellowship. Dr Anders Hansen joined Peterhouse in January 2014. He did his first degree in Norway, moving to the University of California for his MA and King’s College for his PhD in 2008. Peterhouse has a long and distinguished mathematical tradition. One of the earliest notable Petrean mathematicians was Charles Babbage (1810) the inventor of the precursor to the computer. A remarkable time for mathematics in Peterhouse was during the time of William Hopkins (1822). Hopkins earned the title ‘senior wrangler maker’ on account of his success in coaching aspiring young mathematicians

such as Lord Kelvin (1841) Second Wrangler and Smith’s Prizeman; Peter Guthrie Tait (1848) Senior Wrangler and Smith’s Prizeman; James Clerk Maxwell, recently voted the third greatest physicist of all time in the millennium poll after Newton and Einstein, Second Wrangler; Edward John Routh who, in 1854 graduated just above James Clerk Maxwell as Senior Wrangler sharing the Smith’s prize with him, and was elected Fellow of Peterhouse in 1855; and Fields Medal winner Klaus Roth. More recent mathematics successes include Pablo Boixeda Alvarez who graduated as Second Wrangler this summer. All in all a tradition of excellence in teaching and research of which we can justly be proud!

A generous supporter of mathematics in Peterhouse is Dilip Chandra (m. 1965). His father was in possession of one of only three facsimile copies of Ramanudjan’s mathematical notebooks. He had the copies made from the originals which are held at Trinity. We were delighted when Dilip chose to deposit the facsimile in the Ward Library where it can be consulted by current mathematics students. In the course of the year mathematics in Peterhouse received a further boost with Dilip’s very generous donation of textbooks, making our library one of the best in Cambridge. A fitting tribute to the memory of mathematician Charles Burkill, Fellow of Peterhouse 1929-67, Master 1968-73.

Recent research appointments

JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSEvery year the College appoints two or three new Junior Research Fellows for three years. These posts are hugely valued as an opportunity to pursue your own research. From the College’s point of view it is a way of helping the next generation of outstanding academics.

This year we appointed Dr Susie Alaghband-Zadeh (Physics), Dr Jessica Johnson, (Archaeology and Anthropology) and Mr Sam Rose (History of Art).

Susie Alaghband-Zadeh was the first Howie JRF in physics to be appointed thanks to the generosity of Petrean Fraser Howie. Her area of research is astro-physics and she did her first degree in Durham. She studies the evolution of galaxies in the distant Universe by looking at the link between the star formation occurring in distant galaxies and the supermassive black holes at the centre of them. She is using her observations on the physical properties of the galaxies in the Universe we live in to explore how galaxies evolve across time.

Jessica Johnson is a social anthropologist specialising in the legal anthropology of Malawi in Southern Africa. She is currently working on a book which focuses on competing notions of justice as they pertain to gender relations. She will shortly begin work on a new project looking at the bureaucratic workings of justice in Malawi and the complex processes of deliberation and adjudication that inform legal decision making on the part of magistrates.

Sam Rose is an art historian interested in the development of art theory over the course of the twentieth century, in particular in relation to themes such as the social importance of visual art, the practice and rhetoric of art criticism, and the continued adherence to a canonical set of ‘modernist’ artists. His current book project, developed from a PhD written at the Courtauld Institute of Art, looks at the development of the philosophy of art in England over the first half of the twentieth century.

This year we were also delighted to welcome to the Fellowship Dr Tim Dickens and Professor Richard Holton.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATESOver the past few decades the shape of the academic community in Cambridge has been changing. There is an ever increasing number of post docs – young academics on relatively short term contracts at the start of their careers who are engaged in research as part of a team led by a more senior academic. Many of these have no College affiliation and therefore miss out on much of what Cambridge has to offer. The University community has been working on ways to integrate these more fully into the Collegiate system and this year proposed a pilot scheme by which Colleges elect up to four people a year to a research post that effectively creates a new tier of College membership. Peterhouse has been one of the first Colleges to adopt the scheme and in January we admitted our first four ‘Research Associates’. The scheme is intended for those with no previous affiliation to a College. In addition to expanding our numbers of young academics and providing additional role models to our junior members, the Research Associates could also be a valuable teaching resource.

When we advertised the posts, we learned that there were also two Petreans currently working in the University as post docs, Dr Johanna Dale (m. 2002) and Dr Graham Wheeler (m. 2010), so we were delighted to be able to invite them to become our first ‘Honorary Research Associates’. Johanna is working on a major interdisciplinary research project on the Kaiserchronik – a Middle High German text of considerable significance for the development of literature in the period.

Graham is working on the application of mathematics to the design of dose-escalation studies in the treatment of cancer. The most important part of his research is working with clinicians and trial investigators to ensure that the best possible methods are being applied in practice, for the benefit of current and future patients.

In addition to Johanna and Graham, our first group of Research Associates are:

Dr Gonçalo Bernardes (Chemistry), Dr Celestino Creatore (Physics), Dr Susan Fitzpatrick (Physiology, Development and Neuroscience), and Dr Chloe Reddaway (Divinity).

We are delighted that Chloe secured an excellent position in King’s College, London starting in October – although we are sad to lose her after less than a year. As I write this we have just advertised for the second intake of Research Associates in January 2015.

NEW FELLOWSThis year we were also delighted to welcome to the Fellowship Professor Richard Holton and Dr Tim Dickens. Professor Holton, along with his wife Professor Rae Langton, recently spent part of a sabbatical as Senior Research Associates at Peterhouse so we were delighted to welcome him back to the College as a Professorial Fellow when he was appointed to the chair in Philosophy. Recently the focus of his research has been on human motivation and he is now working on a book on moral psychology – on how empirical issues of human nature fit together with what philosophers have thought about ethics. He is also

collaborating on a project on trust and banking, looking at the apparent breakdown in trust since the 2008 financial crisis. He is particularly interested in how much that is simply a failure to believe that institutions will behave in a certain way, and how much it involves a moral disappointment. Dr Dickens joined the Department of Chemistry in 2008 after a career in the pharmaceutical industry. He joined the College as a Bye-Fellow in 2011 to support the teaching of Chemistry following the retirement of Professor Klinowski. In October 2013 he was made an Official Fellow College Lecturer and Director of Studies. His aim is to ensure that all Petreans who study Chemistry as part of their Natural Science Degree get the best results they are capable of and are equipped with a fascination and appreciation for the beauty of the subject even if they do not go on to study it in Part II.

In 2010–11 the University invited the College to jointly host the newly established Humanitas Visiting Professor of Chamber Music.

The Humanitas Chair in Chamber Music, sponsored by Mr Lawrence Saper, brings world-renowned performers to Cambridge to share insights into the character and challenges of musical performance, explaining their own approach to a range of musical masterpieces and the consequences for listeners of their interpretative choices. Each year the holder is admitted as a Visiting Fellow to the College, stays here while in Cambridge, and we encourage them to take part in as much of the life of the College as their tight schedules will allow. The first holder was the pianist Alfred Brendel, whom we later elected an Honorary Fellow and who was subsequently awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music by the University. In the first of his lectures, Professor Brendel showed that the perception of character and atmosphere in musical performances is no less important than that of form and structure. In his second lecture he examined performance details such as sound, notation,

rhythm and character through recordings and projections. In both, he played musical examples on the piano to illustrate his points. The series concluded with an open rehearsal and concert with the Szymanowski Quartet.

In 2011-12 we hosted the Mozart specialist Robert Levin. His opening lecture-recital provided a fascinating insight into the challenging and methodologically sophisticated task of analysing Mozart’s piano improvisations. Professor Levin’s second lecture-recital dealt with the task of completing Mozart’s unfinished musical pieces. To conclude the series, Professor Levin gave a wonderful performance alongside the Academy of Ancient Music. The final concert was preceded by an open rehearsal in which Professor Levin showed himself to be a gifted teacher.

In 2012-13 the holder was the Bach specialist Angela Hewitt. She began her Humanitas tenure with a lecture-recital in which she deconstructed the process of interpreting the piano works of Bach.

Because Bach’s manuscripts lack any substantial instruction on how the music ought to be played, the interpretation of his music is incredibly important. Professor Hewitt gave the audience a unique glimpse into her own process of playing his works and showed how playing Bach is an act of simultaneous creation and interpretation. Her Humanitas tenure in Cambridge culminated with a moving recital of The Art of Fugue. She held the audience’s rapt attention for the entire performance, right until the unfinished Contrapunctus 14, which brings The Art of Fugue to a close. After an extended silence, Ms Hewitt ended the recital by playing ‘Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit’ (BVW 668), which was dictated by Bach on his deathbed and inserted by his son onto the final page of the original edition of The Art of Fugue.

In January 2015 we will host Murray Perahia, admitting him to the Fellowship on January 14 followed by dinner in Hall. The full programme of events involving Professor Perahia and the Doric String Quartet can be found at: www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/events/25716

If you would like to attend any of these events do let us know in the Development Office.

The Donors Garden Party

The Garden Party on 21 September was a most enjoyable occasion. It was the first time all donors to the College were invited back to see what the College has been able to achieve with their donations.

Not all donors were able to make it but almost 200 and their spouses did come. Those who came were able to visit some of the refurbished rooms in the William Stone Building, the newly refurbished Fen Court, the Gunn Gallery in the Ward Library where there was an exhibit of some of the Whittle papers, the new rooms in M Staircase and the ground floor rooms of the Whittle Building. The Perne Library was also open with some of the books that have been restored in the course of the Campaign. Other achievements of the Campaign such as the refurbishment of the Hall and the Combination Room were of course also on display!

The completion of the Whittle Building is slightly behind schedule, but the Project Manager Keith Stock – whom many may remember as the College’s Clerk of Works – worked tirelessly over the summer to ensure that part of the building at least would be ready to be seen. We were able to walk through the JCR and look into the new Fellow’s Guest Room and one of the student rooms that have been made suitable for wheelchair users. The new JCR had the jet engine nose cone and fan blades on the wall and a Viper engine on display in the window alcove. The Viper engine is to be displayed in the entrance lobby of the Whittle and it and the nose cone are on loan from Rolls Royce.

At the end of the afternoon the Master spoke in the marquee in the Fellows’ Garden to thank everyone for their support

for the College over many years and for coming to the event. He described also the many successes of the Campaign that are not so immediately visible – the teaching Fellowships, the scholarships, the student hardship and travel funds, and the Research Fellowships. He paid tribute to the work of Neil Plevy and of Richard Grigson and explained that those elements of the original Campaign which had not yet been completed would be rolled over into the next phase of the Campaign.

The event was much enjoyed by all who were able to attend and provided a good opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved over the past x10 years. We hope to hold similar events in future years.

EQUATORIEOne of many interesting manuscripts in the Perne Library is the Equatorie of the Planetis. It dates from the late 14th century and is a description of how to build and use an instrument to predict the movement of the planets. We do not know how the College acquired the manuscript but it was seen at Peterhouse by John Leland in the 1530s and could be identical with an item added in 1472 to the 1418 college catalogue. It has been thought to have been written by Chaucer himself and has therefore attracted scholarly attention. In the course of the last two years the College has been engaged in a project to digitise the manuscript and to create a virtual model of the instrument itself. This was completed earlier this year and a conference was held in May to launch the website http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-PETERHOUSE-00075-00001/1

TOUR DE FRANCEOn Monday 7 July the Tour de France came through Cambridge. The Master hosted coffee and cakes on the gravel in front of the Lodge for those Petreans who braved the traffic restrictions around the centre of Cambridge.

WHITTLE PAPERSIn Michaelmas we were alerted to the fact that some papers relating to the commercialisation of Whittle’s invention were about to be auctioned. They were then abruptly withdrawn from sale only to come back onto the market in the middle of Lent Term. With the generous support of 122 Petreans we were able to bid for them successfully. They are now in the Ward Library being catalogued and prepared for conservation. They are very fragile so we plan to digitise them and make them available for scholars as part of the College’s modern archive.

SPECIALISTS IN LANGUAGE ENDANGERMENT VISITING PETERHOUSE In July, Dr Mari Jones, Reader in French Linguistics and Fellow, Director of Studies and Tutor, organised the fourth Cambridge Conference on Language Endangerment. As a speaker of Welsh and Norman, this is a subject of personal as well as academic interest to her. Speakers at the conference included Sheena Shah (Cape Town), Margarita Valdovinos (Ibero-Amerikanishes Institut, Berlin), François Nemo (Orléans), James Hawkey (Bristol) and Daniele Leggio (Manchester). The fifth conference will take place in July 2015.

PERUTZ LECTURE In 2012 – to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Max Perutz’s Nobel Prize and the 10th anniversary of his death – the College and the Austrian Cultural Forum in London inaugurated a new series of lectures in his honour. Max came to Peterhouse as a refugee from Vienna and based himself here for all the marvellous work that he did in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, including that on the structure of haemoglobin which led to his Nobel Prize. The lecturer must have a close connection with Austria, Peterhouse and/or Max Perutz and the purpose of the lecture is to highlight to a general audience current work that either builds on the work of Max Perutz or that would have interested him.

The Perutz Lecture takes place in Lent Term each year, jointly hosted by the College and the Cultural Forum. The first lecturer was Professor Tony Crowther, an Emeritus Fellow of Peterhouse, who had worked closely with Max Perutz . His lecture entitled ‘From envelopes to atoms: the remarkable progress of biological electron microscopy’ gave an overview of the exciting developments in biological electron microscopy that have occurred during the last several decades. In 2013 Dr Herman Hauser spoke on the subject of ‘The fifth Wave in Computing’ and this year the lecturer was Professor Andrew Lever, Fellow of Peterhouse and Professor of Infectious diseases, who spoke on ‘HIV and the AIDS epidemic – past, present and future’. The next lecture will be given by the Viennese endocrinologist Professor Schernthaner on 17 February 2015. If you would be interested in attending, please contact the Development Office.

BOAT CLUB RESULTS After the successes of last year, 2013–2014 was about rebuilding and consolidating the Club. The Lents: M1 went down 3, from 7th to 10th in the 1st division, and M2 went down 1, from 4th to 5th in the 3rd division. W1 went up 2, from 16th to 14th in the 1st division, and W2 also went up 2, from 3rd to 1st in the 3rd division. The Mays is always exciting, the results showing how much hard training can achieve: M1 moved up 2, from 15th to 13th in 1st division. This fantastic result was shaped in part by the contribution of Andrei Lebed, from the winning University Lightweights VIII. W1 remained at 13th in the 1st division, the highest they have ever been. For M2 it was a roller coaster of bump and be bumped with Selwyn M2, finally coming out up 1, from 6th to 5th in the 3rd division. W2 sadly went down 4, however they did brilliantly to get an VIII out at all! STOP PRESS: In the Autumn Head Races (Saturday 18 October) the Men’s heavyweight IV were consistently the fastest crew on the Cam. The crew, made up of Nick Friend, Charles Kabelik, Ollie Bell and Bob Evans, and coxed by Charlotte Coles, proved once again that Peterhouse puts out boats which can not only match, but surpass the cream of the larger Colleges. Arguably one of the most powerful boats Peterhouse has ever put out, they won both the IM3 British Rowing category and the 1st College IV’s division.

The Peterhouse Society 2014

The Gathering Saturday 28 June 2014 The Gathering in June was very well attended. This year there were a few changes to the usual programme. Petreans welcomed the opportunity to have a sandwich lunch in the Combination Room followed by afternoon tea after the AGMs of the Peterhouse Society and the Friends of Peterhouse. The weather was sufficiently mild to enable us to sit in the Fellows’ Garden. There were then two excellent presentations in the Theatre by current graduate students about their research. These were presentations they had previously given at the College’s Graduate Symposium in November. This is an annual event that has developed from an afternoon to a full day of presentations and discussions interspersed with refreshments. These were followed by the conversation on stage between Sir David Wright and Lord (Nick) Stern. Both were up in the 1960s and their conversation ranged from the College they had known to fascinating insights into behind the scenes at Davos and at various climate change negotiations. All too soon it was time to get ready for pre-dinner drinks in the Master’s garden.

A total of 172 people sat down to dinner of whom 116 were Petreans. We filled the Hall and the Combination Room to capacity – indeed we may

have to restrict the numbers slightly in future as this number stretched the kitchens and the serving staff to their limits as well! A PA system broadcast the Master’s remarks to the Combination Room as we lingered over our coffee and port.

Peterhouse Golf Day Friday 27 June 2014The weather forecast promised thunder! So the gods must have been smiling on us as the day ended up being warm and sunny, despite the rather ominous dark clouds at the beginning – how lucky we were again!

We were a select crew of a dozen this year, with some old and new faces – we were especially pleased to welcome Mr and Mrs Lewis who were a great addition to the day.

Retirement seems to be doing wonders for Graham Saunders’ golf game as he was the winner again this year and had the pleasure of being able to hold the silver tankard! (If only for a few minutes as the Master wanted it back for safekeeping.) Maybe a golf tips book might be in the offing Graham? The medical crowd were in full force again with the ever jolly Robin Russell-Jones and the ever youthful Tim Archer joined by David Delaney, a contemporary of the Master. Others amongst us were engineers, mathematicians and natural scientists: Mike Powell, Malcolm Dillingham and Phil Blood put in sterling performances, if not quite enough to beat Graham! It was a very convivial day and what we lacked for in golfing prowess was more than made up for by the delightful company and the joy of seeing old friends again. I was very lucky to play 9 holes with the Master and then the back nine with Stuart Vincent, one could not wish for more entertaining company!

The Master very kindly hosted us for drinks in his garden, followed by dinner in Hall with port and claret afterwards in the Combination Room – which is always a lovely moment to reminisce about the very enjoyable time we all had in College and a chance to reconnect. All in all it was a marvellous day, very much enjoyed by all and our fame must have spread far and wide as Christ’s golfing team have been in touch wanting a game but the team of the Almighty might just prove one step too far!

Peterhouse Development Campaign

Development Campaign We were delighted to reach the Campaign target set by Neil Plevy in 2004 during the academic year. A particular triumph of the Campaign was the funding of the Whittle Building and the associated work on Fen Court and M Staircase – the College is profoundly grateful to all those who made it possible to complete this work without having to use any of the endowment. The list of donors at the back of this Newsletter is shorter than usual this year because of the change to reporting the academic year rather than the calendar year. The new donations to the Development Fund in the period from 1 January to 30 September 2014 came to almost £1.5m. We are very grateful to all those able to donate using the Gift Aid scheme as this will bring the total to just over £1.65m. A total of 126 Petreans of all ages made a donation for the first time and 19 gifts were received from Trusts, Foundations and friends of the College. As always, the calendar year began with the annual Telephone Campaign in early January. The Campaign was managed once again by Rux Burton Associates. Twelve junior members made a total of 451 fundraising calls raising a fabulous £130,000 for the College. Much of this was for the new Whittle Building.

William Stone SocietyThe fourth annual dinner of the William Stone Society was held in

October. The dinner was very well attended by those who have remembered the College in their wills together with their spouses and partners. Donations from legacies left to the College between 1 January and 30 September totalled just over £127,000.

WSS

London drinksAnother successful City of London Drinks Evening was held on 27 March. This year we changed the venue for the event to The Pitcher & Piano on Cornhill, right in the middle of the City. More than 30 Petreans of different ages attended – and as always it was a most enjoyable occasion for Petreans to meet each other and enjoy a drink or two after work before catching the last train home.

Clay Pigeon shoot The Peterhouse Society held a Clay Pigeon Shooting day for alumni for the first time on 4 April. Six turned out and had a really enjoyable day at the Bisley Shooting Ground in Surrey. A mixture of beginners and more experienced shots, the party enjoyed two hours shooting at this leadingshooting ground in the Surrey heathland. With good company and conversation, many clays were broken although quite a few got away. Most of the partyfollowed on with a substantial lunch at the White Hart in Pirbright. We hope that with everyone having enjoyed it, the event might be repeated in the future and attendance grow as word spreads.

Michael BurrellIt is with great sadness that we report the death after a short illness of Peterhouse Society Chairman, Michael Burrell (m. 1958). He had hoped to attend the Gathering but tragically he died that weekend. We marked his passing with a minute’s silence before dinner and the Master paid tribute to him in his address. The College was well represented at his funeral and again at his memorial service in London. Michael was a good friend to the College, sponsoring the Heywood Society and attending their rehearsals to give them advice when his busy schedule allowed. He will be sadly missed.
