TIMES STEAM PACKET Issue 14, Spring 2013 News • Timetables 2013 Brochure and Feature Holidays With summer just around the corner now is the time when many people will be planning their holidays, and we’ve got a number of great travel offers to help you out including the Spring Midweek Break from £67 each way for a Car + 2 people. We have plenty of other vehicle special offers over the coming months, including the ‘5 Day Short Break Offer’ and ‘Any Length Special Offer’. Once again we are running our ever popular ‘Children Go Free Summer Special’, which means that from just £119.50 each way for a Car + 2 people, you can have up to three children travel for free. Details of the Children Go Free Summer Special and all other offers are available at STEAM-PACKET.COM. Even if you’re looking to get away for just a day, Steam Packet Holidays have a range of exciting day trips available throughout the summer months, including Alton Towers, Chester Zoo and the Trafford Centre – there’s something for everyone! See page two for details. Regular travellers will be pleased to see the return of Manannan, which resumed service in late March for our fast craft season. She will once again primarily service the Liverpool, Belfast and Dublin routes through to the end of the season on November 3, with one or two return sailings to Liverpool every day. Manannan has proved very popular for both Manx residents and visitor short breaks to and from the Isle of Man, and we get large numbers booking shopping trips, attending a festival or going to watch a sporting event around the British Isles. The arrival of spring means TT2013 is almost upon us, and once again bookings at this stage for visiting motorcycles are up year-on-year. It’s going to be another busy TT fortnight for us, but there is still capacity on some sailings during the festival. To further boost visitor numbers during the festival’s quieter periods and maximise a vital contribution to the local economy, we’ve teamed up with Snoozebox and we’re packaging our ‘TT Taster Offer’ with spare capacity in the Nobles Park-based rooms during Practice Week. Likewise, the newly branded Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling – which encompasses the new Classic TT, the MGP, the 2 Day and Classic Trials and the VMCC Rally – is showing a significant increase in bookings compared with the same point last year. If you have friends or family looking to visit the Island for these events, or indeed the Steam Packet Company-sponsored Southern 100 International Motorcycling Races, which take place in July, you’d best advise them to move quickly and make their bookings soon. We’ve a busy spring and summer season ahead of us – we look forward to seeing you on board either Ben-my-Chree or Manannan in the near future! INVESTMENT IN PROMOTING THE ISLAND

Each year, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company invests over£500,000 in promoting the Isle of Man as a destination, including print, radio and online advertising campaigns.

While this is obviously aimed at increasing awareness of our services and generatingbusiness, a major driver of the campaigns is the opportunity to promote the Island itself, which benefits the local economy.

This year’s UK campaign includes advertising in magazine supplements in The Telegraph,Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Observer, The Independent andSunday Express, along with several specialist publications, such as Readers’ Digest, Saga,Country Walking and regional media, including the Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Post.We also have a 14 week radio campaign sponsoring the Traffic and Travel News acrossthe Magic radio network of stations throughout the north of England.

In Ireland, our print advertising includes several titles including the Sunday World, SundayIndependent, Sunday Times, the Irish Daily Mail, Irish Daily Star and Irish Sun. Acombination of national and local radio has been selected– RTE Radio 1 and Lyric FMnationally with extra coverage in Dublin (and the commuter belt) with Dublin’s 98FMand Q102.

The promotional activity covers a wide range of offers, such as our summer ‘ChildrenGo Free’, and much of the online campaign is targeted marketing across a number ofpopular sites, including social networks.

Marketing and Online Manager Renée Caley explained: ‘We invest hundreds ofthousands of pounds in promoting the Isle of Man, which doesn’t just benefit the SteamPacket Company, but the Island as a whole.

‘It’s all about increasing the number of visitors to the Island, which in turn benefitshotels, restaurants, leisure facilities and tourist attractions amongst others. The Isle ofMan has so much to offer and attracting people to visit is a core part of what we do,and it’s something we’re proud to be involved with.

‘We’re seeing increased visitor numbers for the TT over the last few years, not tomention what was formerly the Manx Grand Prix and which, from this summer, hasbeen rebranded the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling.

‘Yet that’s just part of the story – our promotion of the Island benefits a range of otherlocal events, such as the Walking Festival in May, the Parish Walk in June, Yn Chruinnaght– the Island’s Annual Inter-Celtic festival – each July, the Manx End 2 End cyclingchallenge, the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival and Manx Litfest, all of which takeplace in September.’

Yasmin’s sport involves a great deal of travel with ahorsebox, and she is the only rider competing in the trials who isnot UK-based, so, as with all these young stars, she is very gratefulfor the Steam Packet’s sponsorship for her many trips across theIrish Sea.

The Isle of Man has a proud sporting heritage, producing a long line of stars such as Mark Cavendish, Connor Cummins, David Knight and Peter Kennaugh. However, while the Island is home to some excellent sporting facilities, our stars have to travel to the UK and beyond to compete at the highest levels in order to gain the experiencerequired to get to the top of their chosen sport. As we have in the past, the Steam Packet Company continues to do its bit to help the next generation achieve their goals. We are helping a number of competitors across a widerange of sports, who receive assistance with their travel costs in order to compete in events. Some of those sports stars include:

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company lent a helping hand to bring a new arrival to Curraghs Wildlife Park – a female African crested porcupine called Kate.Kate was brought over as a mate for Quills, who had been at the Park since October. The Wildlife Park had appealed to BIAZA (British and IrishAssociation of Zoos and Aquaria) to identify a female. Thankfully, Chester Zoo had one available and, in February, Kate travelled to the Island on theBen-my-Chree and joined Quills in a newly-refurbished enclosure.Kathleen Graham, Wildlife Park General Manager, said: ‘We are delighted to have welcomed two African crested porcupines to the Park, and so pleasedwith how well they are getting on. So well, the keepers decided to name them Quills and Kate! Porcupines are an excellent attraction for zoos becausethey are stunning with their black and white quills, making a great impression and quite a racket when they raise their quills and rattle them.’
