Chairman’s Message Hey everybody,

We’re now hurtling towards the 2017 National

Songwriting Awards evening on Wednesday 22

November at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL, and I for

one, couldn’t be more excited.

Some years ago, I went to a Waifs concert at the

Enmore Theatre, and was captivated with their

performance. They are amazing, and I’m sure their

induction into the Australian Songwriters Hall Of Fame

will be a big feature on a ‘never to be forgotten’ night.

In 2017, our wonderful Major Sponsors, Wests

Ashfield and APRA, are again right behind us, thereby

enabling the ASA, as usual, to provide an Awards

evening that is second to none. The best songwriters

in this country deserve nothing less.

As a thank you for the strong support from Wests Ashfield, the ASA will be providing

buses to transport our members and guests from the location back to Wests Ashfield

for the after-party. The National Office will be sending you an email about this, after

you have booked in. It will ROCK!

Our venue this time around is absolutely geared for staging shows and concerts, and

we’re sure everyone (performers and patrons alike) will be ‘over the moon’ with the

facilities. Please get your tickets booked soon, as it is bound to be a sell-out once

again. Don’t miss out on this one.

Whilst counting down the days, enjoy the ASA November e-Newsletter, edited by

Vice-Chairman, Alan Gilmour. He has produced an excellent epistle, especially as

your Board and National Office is in ‘full steam ahead’ mode, making sure all is in

readiness for the ASA’s biggest night of the year. See you all at the Awards.

Denny Burgess, Chairman

The Waifs: 2017 Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductees

The ASA is very pleased to announce that The Waifs are to be inducted into The

Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame at the 2017 National Songwriting Awards. The

three members of The Waifs are songwriters, and have built up a great body of work

over the 25 years of the band.

Here’s a bit of background information on The Waifs:

The Waifs are an Australian folk rock band formed in 1992 by sisters Vikki

Thorn (harmonica, guitar, vocals) and Donna Simpson (guitar, vocals) as well

as Josh Cunningham (guitar, vocals). Their tour and recording band includes Ben

Franz (bass) and David Ross MacDonald (drums).

The band's 2003 album, Up All Night, reached the top five of the Australian Albums

Chart, achieving double platinum status and winning four ARIA Awards in October.

Two further top five albums were issued, Sun Dirt Water in 2007 and Temptation in

2011. The Waifs have three top fifty singles, "London Still" (2002), "Bridal Train"

(2004) and "Sun Dirt Water".

The band supported Bob Dylan on his 2003 Australian tour and then his 2003 North

American tour, including a gig at the Newport Folk Festival.

The Waifs founded the independent label Jarrah Records in July 2002, co-owned with

fellow musician John Butler, and their common manager Phil Stevens, which handles

their Australian releases.

We hope you can join us on 22 November 2017 for the 2017 National Songwriting

Awards, and the induction of The Waifs, at the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club

in Sydney.

Dean currently heads APRA AMCOS’ Member Services division and has over 20 years’

Under APRA’s mandate to manage mechanical right society AMCOS’ business

operation, Dean will also take on the role of AMCOS Chief Executive.

In warmly welcoming the appointment, AMCOS Chair, Ian James, said: “Among

Dean’s many skills is his wonderful ability to communicate the importance of music

and to advocate the case for music creators in government circles. His recent

experience in that role will stand the two collecting societies in excellent stead

moving forward.”

Outgoing CEO Brett Cottle noted that “the Board could not have chosen a better or

more qualified leader for the organisation. Apart from being tremendously capable,

hard-working and dedicated, Dean is a fantastic person. He will provide great vision

and inspiration for the extremely talented workforce we have at APRA AMCOS, and

most of all place the members’ needs first and foremost in all circumstances.”

The announcement comes off the back of another record revenue year for APRA

AMCOS, driven largely by exponential streaming growth. Of the $386.6 million in

revenue (up 16% on previous financial year), digital royalties contributed $110.3

million, an increase of $42.5 million.

In the lead-up to taking on the new role on 1 July 2018, Dean will continue in his

role as Head of APRA AMCOS’ Member Services Division, with appropriate working

transition arrangements to be put in place over coming weeks.

Members News and Information

1. Songwriters Meeting Point

Perth WA lyricist, Patrick McMurray, is

looking to pursue musical collaboration

with like-minded composers. Patrick can

be contacted at

[email protected].

ASA member, Donna Hotz, is a lyricist

who is seeking a composer to help

create songs from her lyrics. If you can

help, please contact Donna on

[email protected].

Sydney songwriter, Bob Brown is

looking for a co-writer. His musical likes

are “ballads/ country/ country rock/ guitar instrumental, but I'm open to whatever

project.” “I've been in the Top 30 of ASA but never cracked it further in.” Bob has

sent us some recordings which we are happy to pass on to anyone who is interested.

Bob can be contacted on [email protected].

ASA member, Tony Bogan is a lyricist, who is looking to team up with a

musician/composer, to put music to his words.

Tony writes: “I have a collection of around 40 song lyrics I have written of varying

ideas or themes (not boring love songs either) and I really want to team up with

some good musos/composers ASAP.”

“Two, in particular, I would like to get written with a view to getting someone to sing

one of them on a talent show - e.g. The Voice or Who's Got Talent in the UK given

their global themes.” Tony can be contacted on 0488 443 155

and [email protected].

ASA Member, Liz Connolly, is a vocalist, lyricist and songwriter, looking for a Gold

Coast or Northern NSW based songwriting partner who can help write/co-write

guitar/piano accompaniments to her songs. Liz has a half a dozen songs in a variety

of styles (pop, rock, folk, ballads), that she has completed or semi-completed using

electronic songwriting tools. In 2014, her song "Don't be Afraid" was short listed for

the ASA song writing competition Contemporary Pop/Dance Category but didn’t

progress any further. Liz can be contacted at [email protected] or

0409345133.

Spencer Kelly writes “I've been writing songs for years but it's only in the past 6

years that I've been getting Stacy Hogan at Writers Paradise studio to produce them.

Have been on the lookout for a great co-writer / lyricist as I tend to get a bit tired of

my own lyrics - I've got a lot of great backing tracks/melodies I've written and

demo'd (100+), but haven't developed further, so if you know of a good writer who

might be interested, I can be contacted at [email protected].

32

ASA member, Beverley Tang, is seeking someone who is familiar with the music

software program, Cubase Pro 9 by Steinberg, and can give her a few tips on using

some of the features.

If you can assist Beverley, please contact me on [email protected], and I’ll pass

your details on to Beverley.

2. Is this our Youngest Top 30 Placegetter?

9 year-old Delta Charlesworth may well be our youngest Top 30 place-getter in the

Australian Songwriting Contest.

Her songs, Sweet Dreaming, and I Want More, were entered into the Youth Category

of the 2017 contest. They were both short-listed, and went on to receive Top 30

placings.

Congratulations, Delta.

Delta’s success has prompted the following article in the Illawarra Mercury:

“A nine-year-old Woonona girl has broken the record for youngest songwriter

nominated in the Australian Songwriters Association national award.

Delta Charlesworth has two songs listed in the Top 30 in the youth category, with

winners announced on November 22 – the last youngest nominee was age 13.

33

The lyrics and melody to “Sweet Dreaming” and “I Want More” were both thought up

by the youngster, who recorded them with the help of Dapto producer, DJ Szabo

(who recently remade a Daryl Braithwaite classic).

Mum Melinda said she was so excited for Delta, who would wander around the house

singing as soon as she could talk and began lessons at age four.

“It’s all her, she drives the process. If she wants to do something we try and create

opportunities for her to do it but we’re not sort of pushing her into it, we don’t want

her to do it if it’s not fun,” Mrs Charlesworth said.

“When she goes into the recording studio she sings the song with the tune she has

come up with and the producer helps … and gradually adjust it until what’s in her

head is laid down as a track.”

ASA director, Clare Burgess, said it was rare for children under 10 to feature in the

Top 30 of a category, while each usually receives around 500 entries.

“The Top 10 are selected from this elite group, and then saluted at the National

Songwriting Awards. This is a glamorous sit-down dinner, where the category

winners receive their prizes and play their winning songs. APRA hands out $3,000 to

the Songwriter of the Year, PPCA chips in $500 for the best live performance, and a

Maton Guitar is given to the most worthy ASA Member”, Ms Burgess sai

Previous Hall of Fame inductees have included The Easy Beats, Brian Cadd, The Little

River Band, The Angels, Richard Clapton, Garth Porter, Ross Wilson, Steve Kilbey,

Kate Ceberano, Andrew Farris and the late Michael Hutchence.

Song craft, quality of the melody and lyrics are the main criteria judges look at.”

3. Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley To Welcome New $40 Million Live Music

Venue

A site in Brisbane's entertainment precinct, originally earmarked for a 30-storey

tower, has been replaced with plans for a new 3,300-person capacity theatre and live

music space.

Chairman of Queensland’s largest private construction company (and a long-time live

music supporter), Scott Hutchinson, is leading the $40 million project, located in

Brunswick Street Mall, along with the team that own and operates The Triffid –

former Powderfinger bassist John Collins, and Secret Sounds co-founder, Paul Piticco.

The building was originally a Coles supermarket, and initial plans for the new venue

call for the exterior to reflect “a modernised ’50s facade”. The interior will be

purpose-designed as a live venue by the same acoustic and service team that

designed The Triffid, with work due to commence in January next year.

The project will also feature retail, food and beverage offerings, and is expected to

be completed by mid-2019.

The yet-to-be-named entertainment venue will help to fill two voids in the current

Brisbane live music scene – a larger capacity venue (since the closure of Festival Hall

back in 2003), and the upcoming closure of Max Watt's (formerly The Hi-Fi) at the

end of the month.

34

Hutchinson said that it was "the joy that I've got out of The Triffid that's encouraged

me to do this".

"There's nothing commercial about this. This is me trying to get music back into the

centre of the entertainment area. This isn't about money."

"I think this will bring the mall back to life big time. The people that own the land

around it and the tenants are over the moon – they've all been ringing this morning

and saying thanks. This will turbo-charge the mall. Problem solved."

Speaking on the impact of the Queensland Government's new laws

regarding compulsory ID scanners at Safe Night Precincts venues, Hutchinson hopes

that the government "sees some sense" in the matter.

"They can't continue to hinder culture in Brisbane. And I think they're going to

quietly back out of this silliness."

And if the artist lineup for the new venue was left up to Hutchinson, there is no

hesitation in who he would have on the bill.

"Iggy Pop. That only takes me half a second to answer!"

4. Proposals To Revive Sydney’s Night Life

The City of Sydney is set to reform outdated local planning laws in a bid to inject

new life into the city’s beleaguered late-night economy.

A new round of proposals sees the City of Sydney set out to make it easier for small

businesses to trade late, and encourage more small-scale cultural events and

activities across the city.

There's good news for existing entertainment venues too, with the ‘agent of change’

principle to be applied for the first time when managing noise impacts.

Under this system, new residential developments near venues would need to be

designed and built to ensure residents are not impacted by the venue’s noise.

Conversely, new entertainment venues would be required to protect existing

residential properties from any noise it will make.

Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, said that although the City had started this work to

encourage a more diverse nightlife before the impact of the NSW Government’s

lockout laws, it was even more important now.

“Unfortunately, the lockouts have had a serious impact on Sydney’s cultural life,

businesses and our reputation overseas – and while areas like Kings Cross are safer,

we know the balance isn’t right yet in terms of Sydney’s nightlife," she said.

“We also made a commitment to review the red tape that we are responsible for that

impacts the way our city operates after hours."

The City’s night-time economy is estimated to produce $3.64 billion in revenue per

year, involving more than 4,600 businesses and employing over 32,000 people.

THE BLOG: GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF GREAT

I watched a movie this morning called “Hired Gun”. It’s the story of some of the best

session players (and live performers) whose names you might not know. Among

them, an old friend Kenny Aronoff. Highly recommend the movie but it’s not the

focus of my blog today.

The Quote

There was a quote from David Foster, originally a session guy, turned producer and

one of the most successful from the 80’s on. He was talking about the fact that these

37

players are the best of the best and that there are a million good ones out there but

only a handful tick all the boxes. His quote was “good is the enemy of great”.

I’m coaching writers all over the world and this is one of the hardest things I have to

share with most, somewhere along the line. There are writers whose only goal is to

be the best writer they can be, and I love coaching them but by and large, most

writers I work with are looking to be compared with the best of the best.

Most are willing to put in the work to strive for this but there are the ones who have

been told their songs are “nice” or “good” and don’t understand why they aren’t

successful . . . right now.

A Kiss On The Cheek

In years of writing songs and playing them for artists, producers and publishers it

was a hard pill to swallow to hear one of those words as my song faded out. “Nice”.

Nice may be the worst. Nice was a kiss on the cheek, A for effort, well done, nice try.

Same for “good”. Good was good enough starting out. It was a measure of progress,

but it soon became only that. Good never seemed to cut it. Pretty soon it joined nice

as one of the words I never wanted to hear.

What I think David Foster meant was that if you settle for good you’ll never be great.

You hear good often enough and you may never hear that word you really need to

hear.

Great.

Again, it all depends on your expectation. If you’re the writer simply trying to write

better than you do at this point in time, good ain’t bad!

If you want this as a career you won’t settle for good, you want… great. If you’re

writing great songs you will get noticed and wouldn't that be nice?
