Paul was born in Leeds and made his Olympic debut last year with the men’s eight squad, who claimed a 2016 Rio gold medal, narrowly beating Germany to the post. Paul was welcomed into Carr Manor Community School along with Row Leeds, who spent the day teaching pupils the fundamental basics of rowing and dry rowing. He spent part of the morning chatting to Year 9 Sport and Society Study School pupils about how his love for rowing developed, how he balances his personal life alongside the Olympics and how the beds in the Olympic Village just aren’t made for those over 6 foot! “I had a chat with the pupils and gave them the chance to have a look at the gold medal and see a little bit of what team GB does when they’re away every 4 years. We’re just trying to do the best we can for the country” said Paul. Paul Bennett Visit Maritime Museum Trip Year 2 pupils have also been learning about the Titanic and created their very own Titanic ships out of cardboard boxes, tubes, milk bottles and more! They all look amazing and the pupils learnt lots of interesting facts about the Titanic during this topic, such as the date of departure, the route the ship took and the amount of passengers who sadly died in the crash. The ships have been displayed very proudly in their classrooms. 30 Year 7 pupils went on a trip to the Merseyside Maritime Museum on 14th December, as a reward for their effort and motivation on the Titanic Learning Skills project. The museum put on a play re-enacting the experience of a crew member (a quartermaster) who was on board the ship when it sank. The pupils asked some challenging questions of the quartermaster and were then given a tour of the museums’ Titanic exhibition. All pupils conducted themselves excellently and were really inquisitive. Well done Year 2! He enjoyed speaking to the pupils and was happy to hear that so many of them were interested in his journey and Olympic success. We would like to thank Paul for his visit and taking the time to speak to our pupils.

Year 10 pupil Elisha Omodeinde said that “our trip to the Magistrates Court was a wonderful experience and it was remarkably helpful. Each part of it was

interesting and played a piece in the puzzle of the Crime and Deviance topic of Sociology.”

Pupils were given an introduction as to how the courts work and had the opportunity to sit in the public gallery whilst the trials were taking place.

All pupils displayed great levels of respect and asked interesting questions to the Magistrates in the feedback sessions.

As part of Year 1’s big question this half term “What was in my grandparent’s toy box?” the children went to Abbey House Museum to experience different toys old and new.

They went to a workshop to have a look at and play with toys that were over 100 years old!

Thursday 19th January to deliver a STEM roadshow to all Year 8’s.

Pupils found out about the need for scientists and engineers in the future.

The presenters brought with them an amazing drone and a robot to demonstrate the recent technological advances.

The robot also showcased a bit of dabbing and some tai-chi!

Well done to the 17 pupils who received their certificates and RP lanyards at the presentation ceremony on Tuesday 10th January.

The pupils are now fully trained RP representatives and will be wearing their Restorative Practice lanyards around school with pride. They join the other 216 RP reps we have at Carr Manor Community School.

Pupils understand the importance of Restorative Practice, and since its introduction to Carr Manor Community School, stronger relationships have been forged through an increased level of respect between staff and pupils.

Restorative Practice Lanyard ceremony

A big well done to all pupils who were involved in the Christmas Showcase on Tuesday 13th December.

Christmas Showcase

Well done to all pupils who received a certificate or reward in the Assemblies before half-term.

There were awards for Attendance, ePraise, House awards, Further Learning and many more.

Restorative practice reps are recognised around school and their presence is valued by pupils who seek support or guidance from them.

There was an excellent display of talent, from singers to dancers to acting. The performances were outstanding and it was lovely to see so many parents/carers and fellow pupils supporting the event.

There was a real sense of community as pupils and staff came together to get into the Christmas spirit.

After the show, parents commented that ‘the evening was amazing’ and that ‘pupils did themselves and the school proud.’ They thought the ending ‘was very emotional’ and ‘a brilliant way to end the year.’

Thank you to everyone involved in the showcase and those who came along to support the show.

Reward Assemblies

If you want the chance to receive an award next time, make sure you are giving 100% in lessons and every aspect of school.

Singing In The Community

A selection of pupils sang at a Community Care Home before Christmas.

The residents really enjoyed the pupils company and pupils were honoured to be involved knowing that it had such a positive effect. It’s always a lovely atmosphere on the day so thank you to those involved.

It’s a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their faces get.

The Year 7 athletics team certainly can! These girls had a warm up competition where some of the girls had the opportunity to showcase their talents;

and they didn’t fail to impress, coming runners up to Roundhay High School having competed a year above themselves. This put them in good stead for the Year 7 competition.

Unfortunately despite their best efforts, the girls came runners up again to Roundhay High School. What was more

pleasing to see was how these girls supported their peers throughout the competition.

This is not the end for this group of girls who will continue to train throughout the winter season in preparation for the Leeds Schools Athletics Competition at South Leeds stadium.

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Year 4 celebrated Chinese New Year recently when our new pupil Yarah Mussa taught us all how to make origami paper dragons.

It wasn’t easy, but the whole classed showed resilience and their determination definitely paid off as the finished paper dragons looked brilliant.

Yarah was a great teacher and the whole class had a ‘roaring’ time.

Thank you Yarah and Happy Chinese New Year to everyone!
