It  It is with deep sadness that we report the death of Gianfranco, the Order of Malta’s Ambassador to the Republic of Kenya. He died in an accident on the morning of Saturday 30th June 2012 whilst flying his plane in an air display in South Africa. 

Gianfranco’s passion for Kenya began aged 13 when he first visited Kenya. From that time on his love for the country deepened. When he became a Knight of the Order of Malta he saw that he could do more for the welfare of the Kenyan people by negotiating a bilateral relation between the two governments.  Gianfranco presented his credentials to H.E. Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya on July 9th 2008. For the next 4 years Gianfranco worked tirelessly and with tremendous ambition and determination to improve the conditions of the poor and sick in Kenya.  Gianfranco’s legacy will continue. Although his generous spirit and wonderful ability to reach out to people at all levels will be sorely missed, we will keep his memory alive by continuing to fulfil his hopes and dreams for the charitable work he began.  Alice Murphy has been appointed Chargé d’Affaires a.i. with immediate effect and until a

One year after responding to a devastating drought followed by a major food crisis in the Horn of Africa, Malteser International, the Order of Malta’s worldwide humanitarian relief agency, is working to prevent future water and food crises in northern Kenya by helping residents prepare for upcoming droughts.  

“Now, we begin with the next phase of our drought intervention in East Africa”, says Ingo Radtke, Malteser International’s Secretary General. “Herders will learn how to collect rainwater for drinking, and so make do with the little natural resources they have – when the next drought comes, they will be better prepared”.                     A long‐term recovery project will benefit around 15,000 semi‐nomads living near Illeret, located on the shore of Lake Turkana and only a few kilometres away from Ethiopian border. “This very sparsely populated region is one of the poorest and most neglected in Kenya, and it is constantly being affected by very severe droughts”, says Katja Horstmann, Kenya specialist at Malteser International. “The water from Lake Turkana is very alkaline, which makes it unsafe for drinking.” Most of the population in the region belongs to the Daasanach, a pastoralist tribe.  

Started on 1 August 2012, the initial phase of the project will focus on the areas of water supply and hygiene. Over a period of three years, Malteser International will help the population harvest rainwater and teach them how to improve and maintain their water sources, so their drinking water is safe. In addition, the teams will conduct hygiene awareness campaigns in schools.  After an extreme drought threatened hundreds of thousands of people in northern Kenya with malnutrition and starvation in July 2011, Malteser International provided emergency relief to more than 80,000 people in Kenya’s  

  

Marsabit and Isiolo districts, distributing more than 700 tons of rice, beans and maize, in addition to cooking oil, mosquito nets, nutritional supplements and medicines. Hundreds of mothers were also taught how to better protect their children from malnutrition. Thanks to public grants and private donations from around the world, Malteser International has been able to finance its activities in Kenya with 1.6 million euros.

Reports from the family of Baby Trevor are that he is continuing to develop well. His physical development is slightly delayed due to having been so ill as a young baby, however he is now beginning to get strength in his legs and pull himself up to a standing position. It won’t be long until he is walking! He continues to give great joy to his parents and sisters and is a wonderfully happy and content little boy. 

Baby Faith is another child that we were alerted to with a heart condition, due to a complication of her having Down’s Syndrome. We first met her in December 2011 when she was just 6 weeks old. Her parents had seen a newspaper article about the Order’s intervention with life saving heart surgery for Baby Trevor. They made contact with us to see if we could assist. In the end they got assistance from an organisation in the United States and the operation was carried out in early April of this year. She has received financial help from the Monegasque Association of the Order of Malta for any further medical treatment. Since then Baby Faith has been recovering well and has been given the ‘all clear’ regarding her heart. However, more recently she has had some respiratory problems and a bout of pneumonia, which meant she had to be admitted to Kenyatta Hospital for further treatment.  

We have been very lucky to currently have 3 volunteers helping us this summer.  

Tuohy Ahern is in Kenya for 6 months and is the friend of the daughter of Ambassador Robert Shafer. Ambassador Shafer is the Order of Malta’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York. Tuohy has recently completed a Masters in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and is a great help with the charitable projects of the Embassy. Her focus is establishing a new project in a slum village on the edge of Nairobi and carrying out the necessary due diligence giving reassurance to our donors. Tuohy is wonderfully enthusiastic and great fun. It is a pleasure to have her in the office and her commitment to the work is gratefully received.  

Hal Wardroper and Jack Shaw are both family friends of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta. They arrived in Kenya in early July and have been a great help in many different projects. They spent the first two weeks with the Malteser International Community Health Workers at the TB clinics in the slums of Nairobi where they were a great help. After that they spent one week at The Nest Children’s Home close to Limuru Town where they were very popular with the children and found time for ball games, painting and generally interacting. This is attention that the children crave and the staff are often unable to find the time to provide.   After that they travelled by bus to Lamu Island where they are currently assisting Dr Nurein Mohidin in the hospital. They are staying in our volunteers house and being of great use in many different departments within the hospital. Luckily they are also finding some time to enjoy the other side of Lamu – sun, sea and sand!
