What’s On 27

Happy New Year! I hope you had a safe and relaxing holiday season. We are delighted to welcome you back and wish you an exciting year ahead.

We kicked the year off in style and celebrated with a few lucky people who had the opportunity to be one of the first 100 people to strike a coin on our newly themed gallery press. This year’s theme acknowledges the convict era from 1788 to 1868 and its contributions to Australia’s history, heritage and folklore. There are some very interesting stories to discover!

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will take place from 4 – 15 April, with a worldwide audience being invited to uphold the Games’ motto to “Share the Dream”. The Mint is a proud supporter and we are delighted to bring you the next coins in the official 2018 commemorative collection.

The Silver and Gold: Unique Australian objects 1830 – 1910 exhibition is now open at the Mint until 1 April. We are thrilled to showcase exquisite and rare nineteenth and early twentieth century Australian silver and gold works from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.

The first Mint Issue of the year is loaded with colourful and interesting products including the 2018 Mintmark Series on page 6, our newest coins in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games collection on page 12 and the PyeongChang 2018 Australian Olympic Team collection on page 4.

We hope you enjoy the issue and wishing you all a great 2018.

RASCALS AND RATBAGS

The release of the 2018 Mintmark Suite of uncirculated and proof coins acknowledges the contribution of the convicts to Australia’s history, heritage and folklore. Each of the packaging features whimsical illustrations and interesting convict stories. Many convicts went on to build extraordinary lives of fame, fortune or infamy. The spirit and symbolism of this era is captured in the 2018 Mintmark Suite. The coin design depicts a stylistic tree in the shape of Australia, with a chain and Broad Arrow at the roots.

Appealing to collectors, proud descendants and history buffs, collect them all to learn about this mixed convict bunch.

In 2006, the Royal Australian Mint produced The Magic Pudding

Baby Coin Proof and Uncirculated Sets to commemorate the children’s classic bush tale. Few children’s stories have stood the test of time like Norman Lindsay’s ‘The Magic Pudding’ since it was first published in 1918. Thousands of Australian children have grown up enjoying the adventures of Albert, the rude pudding and his band of cheeky buddies, Bunyip Bluegum, Sam Sawnoff and Bill Barnacle.

The Magic Pudding is considered a children's classic and continues to be reprinted. A new edition was released in 2008 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the book, and 12 October was declared "Pudding Day". The Magic Pudding is said to have been written to settle an argument: a friend of Lindsay's said

that children like to read about fairies, while Lindsay asserted that they would rather read about food and fighting.

To embrace the iconic imagery of the well-known tale, the Mint included illustrations from the classic story on the packaging. The set features all six standard circulating coin designs and on a token you can see ‘Albert – The Magic Pudding’ in full flight running with the wind sailing past him.

There is no doubt that the Magic Pudding and other characters have had strong appeal amongst generations of Australians. The Mint’s baby sets continues to be cherished amongst parents and collectors. The Mint’s first baby set commenced in 1993 and if you would like to see the latest in the collection you can view page 16.
