Issue 11 – May 2017 District Governor Jan Weatherly 10 Down 2 to Go…Finish Strong Did your club set goals to accomplish this year? Maybe you set them last spring then put them aside. Well dig them out and review your progress. Sometimes just setting goals and writing them down puts you on a course to accomplishment. That is the law of intention working to bring you opportunities to make progress even when you are not consciously thinking about action steps you many have written 10 months ago. If now you are looking at these goals, don’t despair if there is still work to be done. You still have 2 months, and we still have 2 months to reach our district goals. A key goal that is within our grasp is closing the year with 20 more Lions that we started with last July. As of today we are -12. Each month we make progress toward moving into the plus column. Here is where you come in. 1. If you have future members in the wings…bring them in now get them started when activities are high and the one time initiation cost remains at $25.00 Yes that fee goes up to $35 July 1 st . 2. If you have not inducted a new members this year, Do that now! These clubs have not added one new Centennial member this year: Lakewood Knights, Enumclaw, Puyallup, Eatonville Daybreak, Hoodsport, Roy Community, Silverdale Sunrise, Olympia Capitol City and Shelton. 3. Reach out into your community using the needs assessment survey to gather data about the needs in your community. Use this conversation to ask the person you are talking to if they have an interest in serving their community through Lions. 4. Ask everyone in your club to write down 4 people they know who would be a good Lion. Have a meeting in May where you personally invite at least one of these people to come to a meeting with you. Offer to pick them up, possibly buy them dinner and see first hand what you do. Make that meeting be filled the short spirited reports on the club’s best projects. Then ask your guest at the end of the meeting to be a Lion, using the membership brochure to introduce the question. Be sure to fill in their name in advance and the dues. Our Centennial service challenge drives our district to maintain and add new members to keep our organization vibrant and relevant into our next 100 years. Let Your Light Shine on that new Lion who will be working side by side with you this next year. 10 Down 2 to Go…Finish Strong

Did your club set goals to accomplish this year? Maybe you set them last spring then put them aside. Well dig them out and review your progress. Sometimes just setting goals and writing them down puts you on a course to accomplishment. That is the law of intention working to bring you opportunities to make progress even when you are not consciously thinking about action steps you many have written

The Magical Night

Background music; great food: plenty of liquid spirits; a pride of Lions from all over the district plus districts G and F, generous and creative club, district and multiple district donations; a vison of the legacy of the Maple Valley Lions of the past honored by the Maple Valley Lions of the future; and 20 new Lions inducted into the Maple Valley Centennial Lions Club. With District C class, our newest club celebrated with a Charter Night, April 29

th, in a style all their

own. And for the Lions with a few years under their belts, you could not help but come away with renewed passion for Lionism. You witnessed the vibrant visual, auditory and sensual experience of our future. You captured the youthful spirit, energy and enthusiasm flowing at the Cedar Lodge, to take back to your clubs. Thanks to these clubs for adding to the ambiance of this magical night: Enumclaw (host club), Auburn (who already stole their new gavel challenging them to return the visit), Fife, Sumner, Puyallup Valley, Poulsbo, Silverdale Sunrise, Port Orchard, Olympia Host, Lacey MidDay, Lacey Lamplighters, Lacey Sunrise, Tacoma Southeast, Longview Pioneer, Longview Kelso Early Birds, and Pullman. Thank you for showing the Maple Valley Centennial Lions the generosity and power of our Lions family.. And now three cheers for Haley Pendergraft, president. She leads this club, guided by two Lions, Doug Wagner, Enumclaw, and Patti Lovell, Puyallup Valley, as well as the Maple Valley Rotary with roots to the original Maple Valley Lions of 30 years ago. Her caring magnetism has attracted people of like mind to really make a difference in Maple Valley. Their membership swelled to 43 on Charter Night, with 6 guests declaring their willingness to catch the wave of making a difference through service to others. If your club wants to reach out to our newest District C club you can contact Lion Haley at 21803 SE 246

‘THEY’RE THE HAPPIEST KIDS IN THE WHOLE COUNTY’ Special needs kids hunt eggs

Reprinted from an article in the Tacoma News Tribune by Dean J. Koepfler

Call it a blind man’s vision of love. Mike Exley, a 64-year-old member of the Spanaway Lions Club, suffers

from a rare form of retinitis pigmentosa that has robbed him off all but his peripheral vision. He had an

epiphany a few years back while participating with the traditional club Easter egg hunt at Spanaway Lake

Park.

“We did the traditional egg hunt and put out the hardboiled eggs that the lady lions dyed,” Exley said. “I

remember watching the kids come, and they would be there and gone in hardly five minutes, with hardly a

thank you. I thought about that, and it really bothered me.”

After the 2004 event, Exley asked club members if they would be open to changing the club’s Easter egg hunt

to help children with special needs. “They jumped on board,” said Exley. The Lions Club moved the hunt to

the Prairie House Museum grounds and went from hosting a free-for-all, survival-of-the-fastest egg hunt to a

slower-paced hunt for kids with autism, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, blindness and other disabilities.

On Saturday, with his vision nearly gone, Exley wasn’t able to help other Lions club members put out the

shiny, multicolored eggs in a field behind the Prairie House Museum barn. Lions Club members welcomed

about a dozen families and their children with hot chocolate and doughnuts, small gifts and an Easter Bunny

to pose for keepsake photos.

It was the first Easter egg hunt for toddler Arianna Graham of Lakewood, who has Down syndrome and

pushed a little stroller to propel and stabilize herself. Her parents, Andrea and Mike, positioned her to the side

of the starting line so she could go at her own pace. “Arianna, wait, wait!” said her mom, pulling back her

anxious daughter gently twice to the starting line until, finally, a voice called out: “Ready, set, go!” “I see one.

Look right here! What’s that?” Mom said. “Ohhhh!” Arianna said as she reached down to pick up a green egg

from the grass, her first-ever egg-hunt find.

Ian Hagen, 11 of Eatonville, got an assist from sister Genevieve who carried his bag, quickly filling it with

candy-filled eggs. Ian, who has Down syndrome, took a chef’s approach to the eggs he was gathering —

cracking every egg first to get out the candy before dropping it into his bag. “He broke every egg because

that’s what he likes to do,” said Genevieve with a smile and a laugh. Michelle Hagan, Ian’s mom, watched as

her son stuck his head into his bag, saying, “Egg, egg,” while assessing the day’s take. “Did you have fun? I

think so,” Michelle Hagan said. “It’s wonderful. I think this is our sixth year.... It’s something wonderful for

him.”

As Exley and other Lions Club members watched, warmed by the sun, they acknowledged another type of

warmth.

“It’s been a very rewarding project for us,” Exley said. “They come back with big smiles. They’re the happiest

kids in the whole county,” Exley said. “There are a lot more kids out there in the community that don’t have

the simple opportunity to enjoy an Easter egg hunt. We need to find a way to reach them.”

Hats Off to the Enumclaw Lionsfor Sponsoring the Annual Convention Golf Tournament

We picked the only day of the month when it did not rain to squish our way around the beautifully

green but soggy Delphi 9-hole golf course for the kickoff event of the District Convention. The

event netted $825.00 for LCIF with 5 teams, 21 golfers, hole sponsorships and donated golf balls

for prizes. Always a fun event, we look for additions to our hearty crew of enthusiastic participants

to rip that traveling trophy from those Enumclaw guys next year. Gig Harbor pried it loose for a year

in 2016, but back it goes to Enumclaw for 2017. Congratulations guys and thanks for organizing this

event again. DG Jan.

As our Centennial Celebration gets closer, my excitement rises. Our entertainment is one band

away from being completed. 20 clubs have stepped up as vendors. We have parades to march in

with two new banners to display. We need your Lions feet at these parades. We have a post event

party at McNamara’s. Much more.

PLEASE REMEMBER to bring some canned goods for the Emergency Food Network on

Celebration Day. We want to fill their truck. Bring your kids and grandkids they will have fun in our

games section.

We have advertising, flyers, invitation postcards, please let Bob Johnson or Angela Davis know if

your club needs more of either.

Many clubs are now doing or have done their legacy projects. Please email pictures to Lion Bob

Johnson. Here are pictures of Lacey Mid Days Centennial Legacy project.

COME AUGUST 12, 017 – WE NEED ALL YOU LIONS AT CLOCK TOWER PARK TO

Earth Day Student Volunteer Challenge Event April 22, 2017

Approximately 200 school students and parents participated in the Lions sponsored Earth Day

Student Volunteer Challenge Cleanup event at local parks in Lacey (Wonderwood Park), Olympia

(Priest Point Park), and Tumwater (Historical Park), Washington. Seven Lions Clubs in Lacey,

Olympia, and Tumwater provided funding for Earth Day T-shirts, Challenge award funding at each

park in the amount of $500 for the school that had the most volunteers and $200 for the school that

had the second most volunteers (funds go to PTA or SBA organizations), and the Lions Club

provided coffee, water, cookies, and Trail Mix for the volunteers. The park department stated that a

lot of good cleanup was done and with the support of the Lions Club the event was very

successful. They are looking forward to the Lions Clubs sponsoring the event in 2018.
