Hello and welcome to issue 11 of Taiwa-nease. In this edition we welcome back a couple of writers from previous issues who have been taking a bit of a break – Hart-ley Pool instructs us in the best way to eat hot-pot, if you really, really have to. After telling us in issue 3 why we shouldn’t learn Chinese, Steven D. Quinn is back to fill us in on how to get fluent – useful, if you have decided to ignore his earlier advice. Joanne Chang resumes her parenting column to talk about the perfect restaurant to keep the kids fascinated.

We also welcome a new writer – Chiara Gomiselli lets us in on the deal with Kaohsi-ung’s forthcoming World Games, scheduled for 2009. Chiara has the inside track on the city’s preparation for the event and so is well placed to write about this little-known sport-ing celebration.

As far as regular features are concerned, Mark Caltonhill brings us recipes for tradi-tional Taiwanese delicacies, this time involv-ing Taiwan’s famous oysters. TC Lin reports on the author of “The Coming Collapse

of China” and the ‘fag-hag’ phenomenon. Nathan Haslewood tackles the thorny issue of integration and foreignness, while Jerome Keating explains why 2007 is the year to watch for the important clues to the presi-dential winner in 2008.

February brings festivals both Western and Oriental, with St. Valentine’s Day on the 14th and Chinese New Year following swiftly after-wards. So most of the country has nine days off starting on February 17th. For a couple of days many restaurants and shops will be closed, so it’s probably an idea to stock up unless you’re happy to live off McDonald’s or 7-11 food for a couple of days. Of course New Year means that everyone’s going back to their family homes, which is great if you live in Taipei (half the population leaves!) but not so wonderful if you have to drive down to central Taiwan (also because half the popula-tion of Taipei leaves, heading south). In any case, we wish you all the best for the New Year and the coming year of the pig. Gongxi facai!

They say you should travel at some point in your life. It broad-ens horizons. This is true. You can learn another language. True. You come to understand your own cultural background better. True again. But know what the most valuable thing for me is? Being on the receiving end of prejudice.

I think the usefulness of being a member of a minority is too often ignored. You’re never quite able to guess what those around you might be saying in private, no matter how they act in your presence. You come to see the extent of the ignorance, the effect of assumptions made before you’ve even opened your mouth. You, moreover, experience the stark real-ity of being “other”. You are not one of us. You do not fit in, you never will.

A depressing notion? One you’ve considered before? It was something I’d thought of but never truly felt before coming here. Now I’m convinced it’s going to be one of the most important things I’ll take with me when I leave. Why?

Empathy.

This is defined quite simply as “understanding and entering into another’s feelings”. Think about how people grow up and the views they inherit. Most members of majorities are not particularly well endowed with feelings of empathy. They either invest little time in understanding what minorities in their countries have to endure or find themselves unable to do so. Like it or not, many find a bridge between themselves and people of a different background or race.

Empathy is necessary because we all hold assumptions about others. Even the word itself has dangerous connotations. Others. Whether Taiwanese, African, Western - or whatever - remember some of the things you may have said about others or heard said about you.

“Taiwanese have no imagination!”“My god, Westerners love to drink! And they’re so loud!”“Jeez, don’t Asians have a lame sense of humour?”“All foreigners have one night stands…”

When many Westerners come to this country they are utterly unprepared for what awaits them. Most have rarely left their own cultures and soon find that they had been one hundred percent encased by it. Perhaps there were variations marked by spells of travel to other Western nations, but they were variations on a single mono-cultural theme. Many have always been “normal”, easily able to find acceptance in society.

Here, when you sit on the MRT there’s not a single other person like you and you couldn’t even begin to imagine what thoughts are passing through the minds of those around you. Maybe you can hear Japanese somewhere behind you, nearly as incomprehensible to modern Taiwanese as it is to you, but before that person opens their mouth they remain able to dis-appear in the crowd. Most of the readership of this magazine will understand this and, like me, find it difficult and at times annoying or depressing. However, consider an alternative perspective.

Once you’ve been a member of a minority it’s a little easier to transpose yourself into the shoes of the immigrants arriving in your home country. The same utter foreignness and dif-ficulties with the language. The same ignorance, often with a good dash of racist hostility. I’m not saying it’s really possible to imagine the plight of a Chinese or African immigrant to the West. Their struggle always was and will be manifestly greater than people like myself will ever experience. Not only migration, but often poverty and having to begin from a much lower position in the new society. People like myself find themselves on the positive side of prejudice in Taiwan. I hope, though, at least those like me who came here with literally nothing and knowing no one are able to better empathise with the loneliness and struggle of building a entirely new life from the bottom up.

Migration is a trend that is universally on the increase. Espe-cially as the 21st century gets more fully into its stride and the scales of global power and wealth tip in favour of the East, we may come to see the next generations of Westerners moving eastward on a more permanent basis than is now the case. Most Western foreigners now only move east in search of a way to quickly save money before returning home or a chance to open their eyes more fully to the world around them. It is a luxury that we are not forced to look abroad for the best means to secure the futures of our children. However, might our children or children’s children be forced to do this to secure ours?

Being a member of a minority is entirely contextual, anyone on earth can join this group by simply moving abroad. Those who do can more easily reflect on the difficulties of peoples anywhere who find themselves unfairly judged or treated. It’s worth spending some portion of the time spent in this country to reflect and attempt to develop empathy for the struggles of minorities worldwide. It’s time well spent.

not all the sports have to be featured. Furthermore, the host may endorse some additional sports, not governed by the IWGA Member Federations but significant for the culture and tradition of the country, to be staged on the Invitational Sports Program. Worthy of mention is the example of Dragonboat Racing which was staged at the 2005 World Games in Duis-burg, Germany, and it will be presented again in Kaohsiung 2009, together with Softball, Wushu (a Chinese martial art) and Indoor Hockey.

Moving on now to Kaohsiung, the 2009 event will take place between July 16th and July 26th in venues located in Kaohsi-ung City, Kaohsiung County and adjoining Pingdong County, and it will feature 27 sports divided into 4 categories: ball sports, water sports, indoor and outdoor sports. Even though the World Games are still two years away, the Organizing Committee is already working at full speed and the promotion of this event is one of the top priorities. In and around Kaohsiung walls, street light poles and overhead crossings are covered with posters and images of the World Games. During the last 6 months various pre-events have been organized to spark interest among the citizens, for ex-ample the first ICF Dragonboat Racing World Championships, the UIAA Climbing Asian Championships, the Asian S.A. Roll-er Skating Championships and the Disc Golf Competition for the Kaohsiung area. A new main stadium is under construc-tion and the facility will host 40.000 spectators. Thanks to its conformity to FIFA standards this new facility will be able to host other large-scale international sport events. In December 2006 the promotional film for international marketing cam-paigns was shot using the world famous baseball player Wang Chien-Min as front man. The hope is that, thanks to Wang’s popularity, Kaohsiung and the World Games will gain global exposure and the level of awareness among local people will also rise. But it is precisely this point where the Organizing Committee is probably starting to worry, because despite all the effort expended on promotional activities, it still seems as if nobody knows about the World Games - even worse, those who do know don’t look interested. I have had the opportunity to collect a lot of material, to participate in the pre-events and to talk to many people, and even if the World Games offer a great opportunity to Kaohsi-ung to step on to the international stage and for Taiwanese to develop their appreciation of the power of sport there is still a long way to go to ensure a successful event.

For more information about the World games in general: http://www.worldgames-iwga.org/, for news about the Kaoh-siung 2009 edition: http://www.worldgames2009.org.tw/eng-lish/index.asp

Let’s talk about sport. Football, baseball, hockey is probably what everybody would think about, but if you are passionate for some “minor” sport, you’ll always feel disappointed. If you love rowing or gymnastics, you’ll probably wait for the Olympic Games to bring some media coverage, but what if you love figure skating, handball or climbing? Usually there are not many chances to see these sports on TV.

Probably this is the thought that in 1980 brought together 12 International Sport Federations to create a multi-sport event, in parallel to the Olympic Games, to provide a stage for those “minor” sports to get international exposure and to develop their popularity. The new-born event was called World Games and still, after talking with people about it, it seems to remain relatively unknown. I didn’t know about it either, until I came to Taiwan to work on a project which was developed to make the people familiar with this event, since the 2009 edition will be held in Kaohsiung. But let’s start from the beginning…

The first World Games were held in 1981 in Santa Clara, California and few sports participated. Since then the event has continued to grow under the auspices of the International World Games Association (IWGA) which is now composed of 32 International Sport Federations, governing all those sports and disciplines eligible for participation in the program.

At quadrennial intervals, in the year following the Olympics, the World Games offer the opportunity for top athletes in their respective sports to perform at their best on a highly visible stage. For eleven days more than 3,000 athletes compete in events organized with the main goal of making possible for everybody to understand the rules, so enabling both fans and first-time spectators alike to enjoy the competitions. This is also possible thanks to incredible live transmission of video signals from the most inaccessible fields of play: from the remote forest trails used in orienteering to the thousands of meters up in the sky where the skydivers perform their acro-batic stunts.

Talking about such a multidisciplinary event, it comes natu-rally to look at the parallels with the Games of the Olympiad. The World Games adhere to all the principles of the Olympics Charter regarding the social values of sport, they comply the Olympic Movement’s Anti-Doping Code and side-by-side, the IWGA and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) pursue the goal of safeguarding diversity in sport as a fundamental part of international culture. On the other side while the most obvious difference between these two events is the impossi-bility for one sport to participate in both, another main aspect makes the difference: for the World Games the host city is not required to build new facilities or extend upon available infrastructure, this eases the bidding procedure. The events are usually held in existing venues and this condition influ-ences the composition of the Official Sport Program because

Focus on 2007 and not 2008: the Message for Taiwan Voters

The Taipei and Kaohsiung Mayoral elections are over and people are talking about the Presidential elections of 2008. 2008 however should not be the focus. What the public needs to look at now is the Legislative elections in 2007.

Memories and reflection on how Taiwan has suffered under the current do-nothing and opposition just for the sake of op-position legislature should stir any voter to make sure his or her vote count in 2007.

Gone will be the old one vote, multiple member system. The new voting system will match candidates from different parties head to head so voters can see where their votes go. Likewise the legislature will be pared down in numbers and halved in size. With fewer legislators, Taiwan will only have room for men and women who can make positive contribu-tions to the country, and not those who create stagnation like the current pan-blue dominated legislature.

Certainly there is no room for the likes of Lee Ao, the clown prince of negativism or Chiu Yi whose only contribution is to manufacture muck.

Voter wisdom seems to have begun to show itself in the fact that Lee Ao, running his standard negative campaign got less than 1% of the vote (a mere 7,795 votes) in running for Taipei mayor. No one expected him to win but the fact that he barely edged out Ke Shih-hai, Taipei’s lover of stray dogs says a lot for Lee’s reputation among Taipei voters.

The weaknesses of the one vote, multiple member system came out again in the Taipei City Council elections and it is a system we are well rid of. In the Taan District where I live, the KMT ran 9 candidates and got 7 seats; the DPP ran 4 candi-dates and got 3 seats, the PFP ran 2 candidates and barely got 1 seat as you will see shortly, the New Party ran one candi-date who won. 6 independents and 1 candidate each for the TSU and Green Party ran but did not win. 2 aboriginals ran for the one guaranteed seat for them in the district.

If the Green Party had been smart, they would have found a candidate who fit the aboriginal category. In the voting, the winning candidate for the aboriginal seat, running under the banner of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), received 2702 votes; his opponent running as an independent received 982 votes. The Green Party candidate running with the others had

received 3410 votes. If the Green Party had either convinced the independent candidate to run under their banner or had found an aboriginal member of their party, they could have taken the seat and had someone supporting their agenda in the Taipei City Council.

Further, the difference between the final person winning a seat on the Council and the first loser was a mere 14 votes. In any normal election that would be immediate reason to call for a recount, but in a single-vote multiple member system, how does one call for a recount. Recount all the votes? The last winning person was Lee Hsin of the PFP party who had 13,907 votes; close behind him was Wang Hsin-yi (a former PFP who went back to the KMT) who lost with 12,993 votes. 14 votes was the difference; not much to lose by in a field of 24 candidates.

Perhaps there was some poetic justice in this final outcome. In the closing days of the campaign, a false letter was sent out to KMT voters saying they should transfer some of their votes from assigned regions to Wang. This caused tears among some and cries of foul play amongst the other KMT candidates fearful of not getting in themselves. Wang’s camp denied sending out the letter, yet the irony of the voting sys-tem demonstrated that any of the 7 winning KMT candidates could have easily spared Wang 100 votes and all would have still won.

That is all behind Taiwan now however, so voters now know-ing how their votes will count can concentrate on 2007.

The representatives chosen in the legislative elections likely to be held in December 2007 will be the first to serve four-year terms. Previously the term was three years, but the change has been effected in order to eventually synchronize Legislative Yuan elections with Presidential elections. The current and 6th Legislative Yuan has 225 members. Current legislators have come to office in dif-ferent ways: 168 are elected by popular vote, while 41 are elected on the basis of the proportion of nationwide votes received by participating political parties. Eight are allo-cated for overseas Chinese and eight seats are reserved for aboriginal voters.

Getting Fluent: The Path to Mandarin Proficiency

Perhaps you’re new to Taiwan and determined to understand what is going on around you; perhaps you’ve been in Taiwan for some time, and feel like you’ve dug yourself into a pit of linguistic and cultural ignorance by not being able to speak or read Mandarin; perhaps you’ve figured out that being able to communicate in Mandarin will open up a number of career opportunities, elevating you beyond the status of a temporary worker in Taiwan’s English, editing, banking, or engineering industries.

Whatever your motivation, learning to speak and read Man-darin fluently, as opposed to speaking “barely getting by” Mandarin, is a task akin to learning to fly a jet airplane. It is not something you will accomplish without powerful disci-pline, a tolerance for frustration and mental exhaustion, and the ability to laugh at yourself.

In my October 6, 2006 article for Taiwanease, “Why You Shouldn’t Learn Chinese,” I wrote about the difficulties of becoming fluent in Mandarin. I suggested that before you begin learning Mandarin, you decide whether you’re up to the task or not. In this article, I’ll tell you how to become fluent in spoken and written Mandarin.

Make Learning Mandarin Your Mission in Life

First, while you are learning Mandarin, nothing can be more important than accomplishing your fluency goals. Unless you are a rare linguistic genius, there are no half-measures here. You’ve got to get extreme. Stop spending so much free time with people who speak English. If you are a “scholar” and like to research obscure language acquisition theories, drop the pedagogy and start getting your hands dirty. Maintain your exercise program, but only work out after you’ve done what you need to do with Mandarin each day. If you have a busy work schedule, cut back a bit.

Aside from devoting a few hours each day to formal learning activities, you’ll have to keep the language learning meter running throughout your day. You’ll need to self-impose a disciplined learning regimen.

Expect to be Patronized by Well-Meaning People

Taiwanese people are uniformly generous in helping the unfortunate foreigners in their midst who wish to learn

Mandarin. They are also frequently condescending. Expect to be laughed at when you first start speaking Mandarin, to be corrected even when you nearly got the tone right, and to be lectured to about vague and largely useless factoids concern-ing the Chinese language. It is essential that you develop the ability to laugh at yourself while you are learning Mandarin, or you will soon find yourself applying for a bed in the local insane asylum. The truth is, a beginning Mandarin student’s pronunciation does sound pretty damned funny. It is amus-ing to hear a foreigner belt out a chorus of atonal, guttural Mandarin in a public place. You’ll probably join the locals in chuckling at lousy “foreigner Mandarin” in a year or two, so don’t get offended if someone laughs at you.

Stick with the Program

Here’s a self-directed program for non-Chinese majors who want to become fully functional members of Mandarin speak-ing society. Mileage may vary, and you’ll make some adjust-ments to the program as you go along, but these are the essentials if you want to be fluent.

1. Take Classes: Sign up for at least three months of intensive Mandarin classes. You’ll need a structured program for build-ing foundational vocabulary and grammar, learning the basics of pronunciation, and getting used to set of texts. In Taiwan, there are several options for Mandarin classes. See the Learn-ing Chinese Forum on www.forumosa.com for information on Chinese class options in Taiwan.

Plan on taking language classes for about six months, but no longer than a year—if you live in Taiwan, classes will actually become counterproductive after a year unless you are study-ing Chinese literature.

2. Learn Vocabulary All Day: Carry a vocabulary “leech book” with you at all times, and leech 10-15 words and phrases a day from people you speak with, on top of the words and phrases you pick up from your textbooks. Review the words and phrases you’ve learned whenever you’ve got a bit of downtime (e.g. on the bus, waiting in line). If you stick with this program, you’ll learn four thousand or more words and phrases in context over the course of a year.

To do this, you’ll need to learn some form of romanization as soon as possible. My personal favorite is Yale romanization,

but Pinyin works well too. See www.pinyin.info for a number of excellent tools that will help you learn romanization.

As for learning zhuyin, or BoPoMoFo, it is necessary to read zhuyin for several reasons, but I don’t think it is necessary to learn to write zhuyin. You’ll learn zhuyin in your classes, or you can learn it online very quickly.

3. Get the Right Dictionary: My favorite Chinese to English dictionary is Lanbridge’s Concise Chinese-English Diction-ary. The Far East Chinese-English Dictionary is also excellent. Make your dictionary your friend. Don’t let a day go by with-out checking on the meanings of the new words and phrases you learned that day.

4. Buy A Set of Texts: As your language classes come to an end, buy whatever books are left in the series you’ve been studying, and use them for self-study. My favorite series of Mandarin texts is the John DeFrancis series. This series comes in a set of three books, Basic, Intermediate, and Ad-vanced, and was all the rage among students of Mandarin for years. Study these texts on your own for one hour each morn-ing, come rain, shine, or hangover.

5. Become a Mandarin Social Butterfly: I don’t advocate making friends with people just so that you can improve your language skills. I do advocate making friends with Taiwan-ese people you can relate to in some way, and entering their linguistic world rather than requiring them to enter yours. Get to know the owners of the shops in your neighborhood. Go out with local colleagues. Join a local hobbyist group. Accept invitations to KTV parties and formal social events. If you want to learn Mandarin, you’ve got to get involved in local society in a way that requires you to communicate with people in Mandarin.

6. Use Flashcards to Learn Characters: Six months into your program, begin learning characters in earnest. Buy a set of flashcards with about 1,000 characters, and work through them until you know them backward and forward. You’ll have seen many of them in your language classes. Learning to write them is optional—some people find it helpful for reten-tion, others don’t. These first characters you learn will form the foundation of your character recognition skills.

7. Go Back to Elementary School: Once you’ve learned 1,000

or so characters, in addition to your work with advanced Mandarin texts, begin working through the elementary school Mandarin texts. Read a chapter each morning. Start with grade two and go through grade six. The junior high school texts are optional—once you can read at a sixth grade level, you’ll be able to read magazines and newspapers in Manda-rin.

8. Take Reading to a Professional Level: Once you’re able to read sixth grade texts and have begun reading newspapers and magazines, take a job as a Chinese-English translator. You can work on a volunteer basis to gain experience, or bravely sign up with an agency as a freelancer. Do work for your school if you are a teacher, anything to gain experience. Nothing will improve your ability to read and analyze written Mandarin better than working as a translator.

9. Interpret: The true test of your speaking abilities is working as an interpreter. Around the same time you begin translating, volunteer your services as an interpreter. Do this for schools, churches, or charitable organizations. Go from Mandarin to English, and then from English to Mandarin. Working as a professional interpreter takes years of study, but you don’t really need to become a professional. More likely, you’ll end up using your interpreting skills in business, engineering, or education.

10. On Writing: I promised a program for developing fluency in speaking and reading. If you want to learn to write as well, the best text available is William McNaughton’s Reading and Writing Chinese. For most foreigners in Taiwan, writing will never be a necessity. In my work, I need to write in Mandarin most every day. But in this era of computers and e-mail, I just type.

Follow this two year regimen, and reading and speaking Man-darin will become a permanent skill, one that you’ll utilize on a daily basis while you live in Taiwan or China, and one that will go on your resume for life.

guage except Taiwanese. Saying something like “yin-shi-ke-zai” in Mandarin would sound silly. The dish’s alternative names, 蔭豉香蚵 (black bean [with] fragrant oyster) and 豆豉蚵仔 (fermented bean [with] oyster) did not really help Mandarin’s cause either.

Finally, what could be more Taiwanese than seafood?

The recipe also called for 1 tsp. sugar and a pinch of MSG, neither of which I used.

Versatile Oysters

The first two columns in this series introduced i) breakfast of egg pancake, “deep-fried dough stick” and soymilk; and ii) lunch of dumplings and soup. While both being typical of foods eaten in Taiwan, they certainly had a “north Chinese cuisine” feel to them. For this issue, therefore, I consciously pursued something authentically “Taiwanese,” though it was hard to find out a good definition of what that really was.

Yim-hsee e-a (蔭豉蚵仔; black beans with oysters) seemed a good place to start. Firstly, the “Dr. Eye” computer diction-ary—based on Mandarin Chinese–only recognized two of the characters: 蔭 yin, meaning “shade”; and 仔 zai, meaning “[dialect] son.”

My Taiwanese dictionary from Dunli Publications, on the other hand, contained all four: 蔭 yim, meaning among other things “shade”; 豉 si (I prefer the romanization “hsee”), meaning pickled or fermented beans; 蚵 e (it always sounds like “ugh” to me: onomatopoeic if you share my views on oysters), meaning oyster; and 仔 a; the noun-suffix (similar to 子 zi, 兒 er and 頭 tou of Mandarin).

Secondly, I have never heard this dish ordered in any lan-

Rapidly scoop them out and drain to dry.4) Heat a tablespoon of oil in a frying pan, then flash fry the leeks, chilies and garlic, add the beans and flavorings, mix, then add the pre-cooked oysters, sauté briefly and serve.

Two other simple, tasty and typically Taiwanese oyster dishes are “oyster omelet” (蚵仔煎; literally “oyster fry”) and “battered oysters” (蚵仔酥; “oyster crisp”).

How to Eat Hot Pot

Tagged: Humour Written by: Hartley Pool

Either you love it or you hate it…or you just kind of like it. Perhaps you’re simply not that keen? Whatever your feelings about hot-pot it’s erm…well, it’s hot. And it comes in a sort of pot, if you’re not too fussy about your definitions.

There are a lot of intricacies in successfully completing consumption of this most local of delicacies, and I felt it was the right tie to guide you carefully through the thousands of social faux pas available for you at the local Shabu Shabu, all of which I have at some time tried to tiptoe around, some of which I’ve collapsed headfirst into with an unfortunate disregard for anyone sitting nearby, or the crowds of people watching through the window. Please bear in mind while reading this that I am a paranoid hypochondriac with acute something-wrong-with-my-stomach syndrome and a lump in my foot that everyone keeps looking at.

There’s no right or wrong way to enter the hot-pot shop, that would be taking things too far, so let’s get straight to the nitty-gritty: If there’s any nitty-gritty in your hot-pot, walk out, this clearly isn’t the kind of establishment you’re accustomed to. Firstly, unless you’re extremely pretentious and go for sea-food, you have a choice of meats to accompany the basic set of vegetables, doupi, doufu and possibly an egg. Choose what you want – what do I care? After it’s been boiled to death and slathered in sauce, it all tastes the same anyway. Just make sure that after you use your chopsticks to transport the semi-frozen raw meat to the pot, you dip your utensils in the boiling water for a moment rather than transferring the bacte-ria-laden juices straight to your mouth.

If you are already eating, then you’ve either:(a) forgotten to go and get sauce, or(b) found one of those wonderful places where they do it for you – well done.

The sauce is a mixture of barbecue sauce, garlic chili and various other condiments that dip everything in before you eat so that it doesn’t taste like something semi-frozen that’s just been inexpertly boiled by someone so bad at basic food preparation they spend all their evenings in a hot-pot shop. If you’re anything like me, the exact proportions are a frustrat-ingly well-guarded mystery, and so I you should get someone else to do it unless you want to spend the whole meal waving you hand in front of your mouth and making strange hoot-ing noises. If you’re like me, and let’s hope you’re not, this saucing of the food is an extremely messy business, and it’s worth knowing that the tissues are kept at knee-height under the counter. I suggest securing two packs before you start. Fi-

nally, if you’ve got it right the sauce should taste rather divine – that’s because it’s laden with more calories than the whole of all the food in front of you put together and will eventually kill you.

Don’t get obsessed with one type of food. For me it’s doupi, for you it could be anything. Obviously. But probably not chicken testicles. You can order extra portions of anything, and they’ll bring you a big plate of it which looks good for about ten minutes, when you’ll have eaten so much of it that if you ever see any of that particular type of food again you’ll throw up. Which is unfortunate, because there’ll still be three-quarters of a plate full in front of you. Whatever you do, don’t throw up into the eponymous hot-pot, this is considered very bad form.

If you’re going with a local person, for God’s sake don’t order rice. We Westerners have a tendency to want to fill up quickly, usually with potato or bread based substances, but rice will do the trick too. Ordering rice will mean that after half an hour you’ll be sat, feeling completely full while your friend, like the Energizer bunny just keeps eating and eating and eating. Three hours later you’ll have lost the will to live and be obsessing about that lump in your foot again. If you’re going with more than one local person, cancel any engagements you might have thought you were going to have that week, because it’s going to be a looooong meal. Do bear in mind, though, that ex-pat bosses generally don’t accept “we’re still at the Shabu Shabu and someone’s just ordered more lamb” as a reason for missing work the next day. Local bosses would probably come along and join in the ‘fun’.

After an indeterminate amount of time, during which you may or may not have considered tearing out your own eyeballs, all the food will be gone.

“Ah,” you might think, “thank the heavens and all the little baby angels – check please!”

I’m afraid you’re sadly misguided, and have forgotten to consider that having had all manner of roots-y, fester-y, carcass-y things bubbling around in it for the last week and a half, that liquid left in the pot will make a darned good soup. Etiquette insists that you now spend a good hour transferring it to a bowl and drinking it. If you survive this, do not desire month-old ice cream scrapings or burnt popcorn and have the whereabouts of three or four hundred NT upon your person, why you’re home free. Well done.

The Five Cent Driftwood House

Tagged: Parenting Written by: Joanne Chang

Dining out with children can be a pretty stressful experience, so when a restaurant comes along that has a set up and atmo-sphere that is child-friendly as well as adult-friendly, parents should take advantage of it. This past weekend my family and I discovered a restaurant that was just as magical and enter-taining for the adults as it was for the children. The Five Cent Driftwood House in Neihu is truly a unique restaurant to visit, with or without children.

The first thing that you will notice about this restaurant is the absolutely amazing architecture. From the outside, it actually looks quite bizarre, like a monstrous brown brain, swirls and whorls all over the massive structure. Walking up the spiral ramp entrance, I had the eerie feeling that I was walking into a cave or into the mouth of some strange beast. But the eerie feeling didn’t last long as I began to notice the incredibly beautiful detail all around me, from the deeply textured walls to the spiraling columns and free-form, flowing shapes. Every inch of the place has been turned into an enormous work of art.

The interior is equally as impressive, with just as much rich texture and design as the exterior. Images of female dancers, the inspiration for the design of the building, are integrated into both the artwork and architecture. Adding to the theme is a live flamenco dancer, who performs on a platform in the middle of a serene pond filled with silvery white fish, as well as around the room.

This is the fifth such building for the owner and designer of the building, Ms. Li-Shian Hsieh, the first four being in Jiayi, Xinying (Tainan County), Tainan City, and Taichung. Hsieh started collecting pieces of driftwood as a young child to use in her art, and later in building construction. Her parents, she says, always encouraged her creative spirit and didn’t pressure her to do well academically. This support from her parents eventually led to the realization of her lifelong dream to be an artist, using driftwood as her inspiration.

Children of all ages will be amazed at the sight of this restaurant, and diners are encouraged to walk around and

view all of the artwork that is placed around the restaurant. The sculptures are made of stone or cement, so they can be touched by even the smallest of children. Information book-lets are available in both English and Chinese for those who want to know more about the history of the restaurant and designer. Another great feature is the fish pond on the lower level. Small bags of fish food are available for purchase if you have small children to keep occupied while waiting for the food to arrive.

The food served is traditional Taiwanese fare, and our menu was all in Chinese, although you may be able to get an Eng-lish menu if you ask for one. The dishes we ordered were all delicious, and were served in handmade dishware, which is available for purchase as well.

So for parents looking for a unique, relatively stress-free, en-tertaining dining experience for the whole family, you might want to give this place a try. With lots of interesting things to look at, freedom of movement, and live entertainment, the Five Cent Driftwood House is an excellent place to enjoy a meal.

‘coming collapse of china’ author visibly nervous during whirlwind visit to Taiwan

TAOYUAN | Gordon Chang, author of the best-selling analyti-cal work “The Coming Collapse of China”, seemed ill at ease upon his arrival yesterday at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. After a series of meetings with government officials, during which Chang kept his unpacked luggage near him at all times, the Chinese-American author was scheduled to join President Chen Shui-bian at the Presidential Office for dinner. Chang demurred, however, saying “I think drinks would be fine. There’s a taxi waiting outside, right?”

“My message to the people of Taiwan is simple: Your neigh-bor, the mainland, is trembling. Actually, so am I,” Chang said at the Legislative Yuan yesterday morning, holding up a shaky hand to show his audience.

“China is your neighbor, the bully next door. When the Chi-nese giant fails, you can’t avoid the consequences,” Chang quickly told a roomful of officials, lawmakers and the press before ducking out a window and into a waiting vehicle.

Some legislators questioned the Chang’s suspicious behavior during his visit.

“It’s like he knows something, but isn’t willing to tell us,” said one independent lawmaker. “There’s something fishy about the whole thing, if you ask me, which I guess you did.”

Chang defended himself against the allegations at the airport just before getting on the first available flight off the island

by hastily predicting a “bottom-up revolution orchestrated by disenchanted peasants and workers and stuff.”

“Peasants and workers who once had strong faith in the communist party may trigger a whatsit, uh....a revolutionary unrest once they see private entrepreneurs absorbed into the party and, I dunno, hijacking it, ok? I have to go now. Uh, you also might want to keep a gun under your pillows, you know, just in case,” Chang said as the plane door closed.

area woman’s hand asked in “faghagdom”

KAOHSIUNG | Luo Qing-fang, known to her friends as “Ex-tra”, was surprised and pleased yesterday when her best mo friend, 25-year-old Chen Hanwen, asked her to be his faghag.

“I’ve known Hanwen was gay for years, and sometimes I wondered if he would mind if I hung around him and his mo friends at bars,” said Luo, 26. “But I never entertained the thought that he would choose me to be his faghag.”“It makes perfect sense,” reported Chen, who had been look-ing for a women friend to take with him to gay bars and dance clubs. “Sometimes I need the female perspective. Not the real female perspective, of course; that would be kinda useless. I need the faghag perspective, and Extra has always been there, not sticking out but not really fitting in, when I needed her at many a mo venue.”

The couple inaugurated their newfound status by going shop-ping, having dinner, and spreading deliberately misleading innuendo to confuse their parents just enough to get them off their backs about getting married.
