Celebrity get me out of here’ were of great interest to me and I advised caution when relating the story by omitting the fact that ‘King of the Jungle’ that year was Tony Blackburn. The reception was held at Paul’s local, Pasture’s Lodge at Mexborough, a place I had the pleasure of visiting previously when a guest at a pro’s dinner held by Neil Crossland. As before, the food was of a high standard, and a nice touch was the placing of different pictures of Paul on each table. The weather was hot and I spent a lot of the time outside which suited my heavy smoking habit. Several people told me how Graham Walker of the Grumbleweeds was really poorly, and sad to say, we got the news on Sunday that he had passed away .We have now lost three comedy greats, Paul, Graham, and Norman Collier in a matter of weeks. My local, the Victoria, occasionally puts on a night of live music, and I was anxious to have a listen to a girl I have not heard for nine months, Hannah Lily, when she left her job as barmaid at an open mike night for her few minutes to sing a song, recorded by Adele if my memory serves me well. She has progressed considerably since then and gave a good performance, so much so that she has earned a return booking n four week’s time.

this week...

An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession.

When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said “Father... during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighbourhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic”.

The priest replied “That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that”.

“There is more to tell, Father... she started to repay me with physical favours. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays”. The priest said “That was a long time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger. But two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the fl esh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven”.

“Thank you, Father. That’s a great load off my mind. I do have one more question”. “And what is that?” asked the priest. “Should I tell her the war is over?”

I, along with Steve Birks, Jackie Toaduff, Bobby Dennis, Jean Harrison and Bernie Clifton went to say our fi nal farewells on Friday to our great friend, Paul Shane at his funeral at Rotherham Minster. Our celebrity breakfast club was also represented by Jill Alex and partner Keith, Jimmy Patton, Mel Day, Glen Dale, his son Dave Mae and Lance Edwards. Aware that such was the popularity of Paul there would be a huge attendance, we arrived an hour early at noon, and already a huge crowd had assembled outside the church. The cortege arrived on time with a police escort, and in true showbusiness tradition, we all applauded the coffi n into the church. A fl oral tribute in the hearse spelled out the words ‘BYE DE BYE’.Geoffrey Holland, one of Paul’s co-stars in Hi de Hi, gave a wonderful tribute to Paul, telling us what fun he had whilst appearing with him in not only Hi de Hi but also ‘You Rang M’Lord’ and ‘Oh Doctor Beeching’ Further tributes included Paul’s favourite poem ‘Footprints’ courageously read by his youngest granddaughter, Amy Wragg. Paul was a proud member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, and Keith Simmons paid a glowing tribute on their behalf.Famous celebrities present included Sue Pollard, Ruth Madoc, Jean Ferguson, Colin ‘Fingers’ Henry, Freddie ‘Parrot Face’ Davis, tailor to the stars Neil Crossland and I am indebted to my pal Jimmy Patton for introducing me to Darren Day and his lovely wife Steph. I spent some time chatting to Darren, who was very approachable and great company. His experiences in the very fi rst ‘I’m a

The Fake Festivals scouts have been on the look out for local talent, and the line up has now been confi rmed.Taking place on Saturday June 22nd, Sheffi eld Fake Festival will be kicking off with some of the greatest local musical talent, hand-picked by the Fake Festivals team.“We’ve been showcasing local unsigned talent on the Fake Festival’s tour for seven years now, and it’s been remarkable the huge success some of our original artists have had,” explains Jez Lee, organiser of Fake Festivals.“It’s great for the artists as they get to experience a fully equipped and professional festival stage that you would see at events such as Glastonbury and Reading. They also work alongside our highly experienced sound and lighting team that work on the big arena tours with big name artists, and also the main UK festivals too.” From 1.00pm onwards, festival goers will be able to catch the selected fi ve local support acts on the main stage inside the huge Fake Festivals marquee.Taking to the stage fi rst will be 3FB, a covers band from Sheffi eld that comprises of three friends, James, Rich and Bill, who decided to come together to make music. They are already planning an album, so make sure you catch these guys now.No strangers to Sheffi eld’s music scene, Hail to the Eskimo have an upbeat bundle of songs with sonic energy that refl ect the stranger parts of life and love, with a witty commentary on the mundane. The Sheffi eld band will be fi lling the Fake Festivals marquee with a wall of guitar riffs and dance beats.Unusually named covers band, Laughing Gravy will be belting out the classic anthems warming you up for the main tributes. They have a huge following, and it’s not surprising with their popular set list that includes Purple Haze, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Pretty Vacant to name a few.One of the most popular unsigned bands in Sheffi eld at the moment, The Ratells, will be performing this year. The post punk indie original band have been nominated for countless awards including Exposed Magazines band of the Year, and have also picked up Hallam FM’s Band of The Week after they performed at Tramlines. Make sure you’re down at the front when these guys are on stage.“With guests such as the news editor of NME magazine, and other music industry professionals turn up on the Fake Festivals tour, you just never know who’s going to be there,” continues JezFor further information please visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk

DIGNITY IN CARE AWARDhttp://www.srsb.org.uk/Feeds.aspx?Key=a7a6dcb4-42d9-4389-9b2c-bc2956009518&FeedType=DYN

This was the fi rst Dignity in Care event held by Sheffi eld City Council and it has been established to recognise the contribution that many local organisations are making within the care industry. Cllr Mary Lee spoke to the audience about dignity in care and how it is important to treat people in the way that we would want to be treated and how dignity should be a priority that underpins all care services. Staff from Cairn Home were thrilled to accept a Highly Commended Award in the Small Organisation Category in acknowledgment of their work.It was great to be recognised alongside several

other important organisations that were nominated for their contribution. Cairn Home was nominated by Anne Brown whose friend was a resident at the home, although sadly she has passed away now. FIREFIGHTERS USE VIDEO TO HIGHLIGHT KITCHEN SAFETY MESSAGEhttp://www.syfi re.gov.uk/2828.asp

Two Rotherham fi refi ghters have become so fed up with the number of house fi res caused by dirty ovens and grill pans, they’ve turned to YouTube to tell people how to clean them properly. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm51DZqgxxA&feature=youtu.be Ryan Webster and Adam Dilks, both fi refi ghters on Rotherham white watch, are using the two minute clip of them cleaning the oven at their Fitzwilliam Road fi re station in a bid to drive down the number of kitchen blazes the fi re service attends.Rotherham’s fi refi ghters went to 150 accidental house fi res last year, about half of which started in the kitchen. Of those, many were caused by a build up of fat and grease on grill pans, dirty ovens or unattended cooking.A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue survey found 40% of people admit to not cleaning out their oven or grill pan in the last six months.Posters go up across Rotherham this week, again asking people to clean out their ovens and grill pans.Watch Manager Gary Bruce, said: “You’d be amazed how many homes we go to where minimum standards of hygiene and cleanliness aren’t maintained, putting residents at a real risk of having a fi re that could severely damage their property. “That’s why Ryan and Adam have made this video, to hopefully motivate people not to put off this particular household chore any longer. Even a small amount of thick, black smoke can ruin walls and furnishings and put lives at risk, so although the video is an unusual step, the message behind it is a serious one.”The video forms part of the fi re service’s Kitchen Nightmares campaign, which aims to reduce cooking blazes across South Yorkshire.Advice being given to residents includes: • Clean out ovens and grills regularly to avoid a build up of fat and grease • Never leave cooking unattended and switch off equipment after use • Ditch old fashioned chip pans, use oven chips or thermostat controlled fryers instead • Don’t attempt to cook if you’ve been out drinking, buy a takeaway instead To view the video visit www.youtube.com/syfr08 or more information on staying safe in the kitchen visit www.syfi re.gov.uk

DASH FOR CASH!On a wet, muddy fi eld in Herdings Park on Thursday 30th May, Peer Mentors and children held their fi rst ever Sponsored Fun Run. This event had been arranged to boost much needed funds for play on Gleadless Valley in a fun way in a time when there seems to be less and less resources available.Over 20 children participated in a very challenging course comprising of traditional games, this included the following disciplines:sprinting, egg and spoon obstacle course, sack racing, three legged race. Wendy Furniss, Project Manager said “ The children suggested having a fun run to one of our young mentors and the mentor has worked with the children to plan the event. Wendy also added “It’s brilliant to see our young people working collectively to make a positive difference and generate much needed funds”.

FIRST MEETING WITHOUT COMMITMENT

PURCHASING PROPERTY FOR ADULT CHILDPaul and Mary want to help their 25 year old son Jim buy a fl at. Like many young people Jim is fi nding it hard to obtain a mortgage for his fi rst home, he has had to turn to his parents to assist with the deposit. Before they stump up they should have a long hard think about how they wish to do thisIs it a gift? It is natural to wish to make gifts to children, and it can sometimes help the parents with their own inheritance tax issues. If Jim’s girlfriend moves in or he marries what happens if they split up later? She could well walk away

from the relationship with some of Paul and Mary’s hard-earned cash.Is it a loan? Paperwork should always be drawn up at the outset if the intention is that it is paid back. They need to consider: will it be subject to interest; will it be repayable on demand or only in certain circumstances? Paul and Mary could also put a charge (similar to a mortgage) over the property. There are other ways of doing it. Some parents set up a trust and share in the purchase of a property - Jim can have the use of the property, but they have ultimate control, and it provides much more protection against any future claim by Jim’s partner. Dont go ahead before taking legal advice and have the necessary paperwork drawn up - any extra costs are far outweighed by the peace of mind and fi nancial security it will give you.Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors are at 10 Kenwood Park Road Sheffi eld. Kidney disease is an illness vets see quite frequently in older cats and spotting the signs early can greatly increase the chances of dealing with the problem.Leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is keen to highlight the importance of healthy kidneys for our feline friends.Kidneys are responsible for fi ltering out waste products from blood and as pets get older their kidneys can become less effective. This gradual deterioration is called chronic renal failure (CRF), and can lead to a toxic build up in the pet’s body.Sadly, owners of cats with CRF sometimes think that the signs of this disease are simply due to their cat getting older, which can often delay treatment. The disease develops gradually and affected cats often won’t show symptoms until about 70% of their kidney function is lost. Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, says: “Signs of CRF can include reduced appetite and energy, gradual weight loss, bad breath and mouth ulcers, as well as increased thirst and urination. Owners may put these changes down to ageing, rather than kidney failure, so may not immediately think to take their cat along to their vet.” Although the affected cat’s kidneys can’t return to normal, there are treatments that can slow the development of CRF and improve a pet’s quality of life. This is why it’s vital that if a cat is showing any of these symptoms you make an appointment to see your vet for a health check:

· Reduced appetite and energy· Gradual weight loss· A poor coat· Drinking and urinating more frequently· Bad breath· Vomiting· Mouth ulcers If a cat is diagnosed with CRF, the vet may prescribe medicines and change the cat’s diet. Prescription diets containing carefully formulated levels of protein, vitamins and minerals are important because they reduce the fi ltering work that the kidneys must do. Drinking plenty of fresh clean water is also crucial for cats with CRF, so clean water must be available at all times. A cat with CRF will need regular monitoring, but by recognising the signs of the disease early on, owners can help their cat enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible. FRIDAY21ST JUNE

The South Yorkshire Filmmakers’ Network (SYFN) is back for its sixth annual 2Weeks2-Make It where talented fi lmmakers and cutting edge musicians are brought together to create a music video in just two weeks, for the chance to win coveted prizes. This competition is just one arm of activity run by the not-for-profi t SYFN which promotes fi lm-making events across the region. Co-founded by notable Brooklyn-born producer Rob Speranza, whose work includes feature and short fi lms, SYFN creates monthly networking opportunities for likeminded individuals, including screenings celebrating the work of local fi lmmakers. Those wishing to take part in 2Weeks2Make It have until Friday 7 June to enter. Applications can be made through the SYFN website which must include links to music production and/or video show reels. Musicians are charged £85 to enter and fi lmmakers £25, which also buys them member-ship to SYFN. Existing SYFN members can enter for free. The unique thing about the competition is that the team at South Yorkshire Filmmaker’s Network randomly match up successful applicants to create a music video culminating in eclectic results. Film-makers are not permitted to choose their preferred musicians or vice-versa.Around 20 pairings are expected to compete to make the best music video to win sought-after

prizes including a £500 cash prize of, a full day recording at Old Pig Farm Studios, Sheffi eld; a distribution deal for a song or video release; free fi lm equipment hire from Pro Vision, Leeds; cases of beer from Peak Ales, Chatsworth, plus more prizes which are being added through June and July. The competition kicks off with a launch event on 21 June at Electric Works, Sheffi eld, where the random drawing of team names will take place. Industry talks and seminars will be held offering advice from experts on how to make a great video and how to avoid age-old clichés, followed by an evening of drinks, food and live music.2Weeks2Make It will reach its climax on 15 July at the Showroom Cinema, Sheffi eld, where each of the fi nalists’ videos will be screened to members of the public and a panel of experts as they vote for the winner.2Weeks2Make It brings together South York-shire’s creative community and allows teams of professional fi lmmakers and musicians to make long lasting connections. The event has been well attended for the past six years which is testament to the sheer quality and calibre of talent that join together for the event. For more details and submissions forms, visit www.syfn.org/events-competitions/2weeks2makeit/

The Whirlow 10k is the offi cial charity race with all entry fees going directly to Whirlow Hall Farm Trust; a local charity who educates chil-dren and young people about where their food comes from and countryside.Sunday 14th will be ‘Whirlow Day’ with lots of other exciting activities taking place on the farm. If you are not a runner you can still go along and enjoy a range of other activities such as archery, climbing walls and a fun run to name a few. The Whirlow BBQ will of course be fi red up selling delicious high welfare sausages and bacon butties; and there will even be a bar to relax with a pint of real ale and music. There is a real buzz at the farm about the Whirlow Day as they have a group of sheep keen to get in the action. For the fi rst time ever you will be able to see sheep racing at the farm; This sounds like good fun and a must see…will you go along and cheer for your favourite? We are sure you will agree the weekend is shaping up to be full of fun, laughter and hard work (for the runners!) If you would like to enter any of the races please contact a member of the events team on 0114 2352678, email [email protected] or register on line at www.digdeepraces.co.uk

Radio Nightingale, the radio service for the patients of the Rotherham Hospital, is celebrating 35 years of broadcasting this weekend with a special anniversary broadcast starting on Sunday at 9.30am.Throughout the 35 hour marathon effort the team of volunteers will welcome guests and previous presenters to the studio. John Healey MP, Steve Smith and Rev Canon David Bliss are amongst the planned visitors over the 2 day effort. Plus there’s returns for David Hoffman, one of the original team from 35 years ago, and Rob Staton, now of BBC Radio Sheffi eld, who started out with Radio Nightingale commentating from Millmoor when he was just 17.The broadcast is raising funds for the online broadcasting which is launched by the event. As modern medicine continues to develop, the number and length of admissions to hospital is reducing. But with a brand of radio dedicated to aiding recovery, Radio Nightingale is extending to the internet to take it’s medicinal extra to wherever it is needed.‘Playing requests for individuals’ is what we do best’ said Station Manager, Mel Jaques. ‘The only difference is this weekend we’re doing it for money and for people outside of the hospital’. Hospital Radio has it’s foundations solidly in patients requests, with medical research proving the health benefi ts of hearing a favourite song. Dedications and donations for the weekends broadcast are welcome either online or by phone. ‘We won’t be forgetting the patients though’ Mel added, ‘we really want to get them involved in the broadcast to celebrate the achievement’.More information about and during the broadcast will be available online at www.radionightingale.org.uk and through Facebook and Twitter.

Club Historians recently became aware of a very well established club in Leeds- Holbeck WMC. Established in 1877, it is one of the oldest in the country. Situated in an area that now experiences relatively high levels of social deprivation, with crime also a concern, it might appear as a diffi cult place to live. But it’s home to many people and the club is a central part of Holbeck life for many. Sadly, as with hundreds of other clubs, it is struggling. But the committee and members are not letting their club slip into closure without putting up a good fi ght! They have impressed Club Historians with their Save the Holbeck campaign and we support them in their efforts. The club has featured in the local press over the past few weeks, also on BBC radio when committee members explained what a loss to the community closure would mean. It would be solitary confi nement at home for many older people who socialize at the Holbeck. They know they need to bring in younger people to ensure a future. On Saturday June 1st, they ran a family fun day from noon till 11pm. It was intended to attract local people and to help recruit new members but also as a day for existing members to enjoy themselves. There were activities for all ages both in the car park area and inside the club: infl atables, a BBQ, face-painting etc. Later in the evening there was a concert, disco and bingo and all were attended- they are going to try to keep this momentum going. Committee members and bar staff are offering their time for free and this do-it-yourself attitude dates back to the early days of clubs when the founder members set up clubs with their own time and money. These days so many social institutions have to survive through voluntary work, such as local libraries. It would be good if the Holbeck, and other struggling clubs, could return to making a profi t in order to a more secure fi nancial future. We wish them good luck and hope they survive and thrive. It would a tragedy to lose another old club not just because of its history but also because of the future. Clearly this club has much to offer with their community focus. Holbeck WMC is on Facebook and Twitter and are using social media to good effect. Pop in or visit their site!

If there’s one thing I’ve come to realise over the years, it’s that moving house never gets any easier the more you do it.I can recall totalling up the number of different places I’ve called home since being a child a few years back. I think then it totalled up about a dozen. Well, if you’ve been listening just recently you might have heard me mention that I’m about to do it yet again.Having just sold my former home which I’d previously rented out down in the Midlands, I’m buying a place to live in myself back up here in the north of England. So, yes you guessed it, I’ve got bags and bags of things, suitcases rammed full of clothes and so many crates full of all sorts of miscellaneous junk. It’s probably going to take weeks to get everything sorted even after I’m settled, but the kitchen pots and the kettle are at least easier to locate this time thanks to a big black marker pen scrawling on the side of the various boxes. I’ve clearly written “Kitchen” and “Bathroom” on two, although those are only loose descriptions on the contents.I’m expecting a big job on my hands when I’m moved in, and an even bigger one when it comes to tackling the painting and assembling the fl at pack furniture of course. There are at least both a fi sh and chip shop and an Indian takeaway curry house within walking distance, which coincidentally had absolutely nothing to do with me deciding where I wanted to live.My girlfriend has been a big help, sorting out the transportation with me and keeping us fed and watered through out. No matter how many times I move, I always say “never again” to myself. Circumstances always change in life though, don’t they? One thing that’s sure not to alter is the stress and strife of moving house!!!See you in the morning for more fun, games and great songs on the air,

Josephine’s Reunion pART 2 FRidAy 14Th JuneOur second Josephine’s Reunion is almost upon us and there are still a few tickets left on sale. This time the Platinum Suite at Sheffield United Football Club are playing host to the event. If you managed to brave the blizzards back in March, when we had a very unexpected bout of heavy snow, you will know what a great night it was.Out of the 400 tickets sold almost 200 people were determined to make it through the blizzards, some came prepared in wellies and Parkers, whilst others braved the arctic conditions in stilettos and silk….and that was just the men!!The Mercure St Paul’s hotel played host to this sell out event and they didn’t disappoint.Illuminated poseur tables and the dance floor were the focal point of the room and professional dancers graced the podiums from 10.00 pm through to 1.30am.The music flowed, ranging from Luther Vandross to Jocelyn Brown with a section of electric 80s thrown in upon request. The dance floor was constantly full and the tunes belting out were a nostalgic trip down memory lane.We even had a visit from Harry Hill lookalike who was strutting his funky stuff on the dance floor.A few people were showing photographs of the original Josephine’s and some of the staff haven’t changed much at all…. Well maybe the hairstyles and fashion! As the event was so popular and such a large number missed out on the evening due to the bad weather, we decided to put this extra event on in June, having already confirmed our autumn one.If you want to be part of this prestigious event and recognise faces that you haven’t seen since the 70s, then get your tickets to avoid disappointment!Tickets are on sale at £12.00 each and some may be available on the door, subject to numbers.

The October reunion is also now on sale. This is Friday 25th October back at St Paul’s Hotel.

Tickets can be purchased by calling Mandy on 0114 276 3633 or email [email protected]

nosTALGiC 50s, hiLLsBoRouGh sTAdiuM, ThuRsdAy 13Th JuneIf you love the good old days and fancy a trip down memory lane, then you need to come along to our Nostalgic Afternoon from 12.00noon until 4.00 pm in the 1867 suite at the football ground. This is an afternoon event aimed at those who do not like to venture out at night, or those who just fancy getting a group of people together for an afternoon of food, song and dance. The afternoon kicks off with a pie and pea lunch. There will be nostalgic background music and a game of bingo to follow.Vicky Louise, the bubbly, blonde vocalist will belt out tunes from the likes of Patsy Kline and Doris Day to get you up on your feet and dancing. However, if you prefer, you can simply sit and sing along to your hearts content! We will then continue the afternoon with another game of bingo, the chance to win various raffle prizes and more 50s and 60s tunes performed by Vicky Louise. The afternoon will come to a close at 4.00pm.

This is excellent value for money and available for just £12.00 per head but tickets are selling fast.

To book, call Mandy at The Mercury on 0114 276 3633.

SLAM DUNK FESTIVALLEEDS25/05/13

REVIEW

Words by KT Evans

Easily one of the most talked about rock bands on the current UK music scene, Mallory Knox are all about putting on one-off eclectic live shows. Having built up a fan base to challenge even the most established if British bands, Mallory Knox brought their belting set to this years Slam Dunk festival...main stage of course! Having been crowned Radio 1’s record of the week with their single ‘Death Rattle’ Mallory Knox are pioneering their new found Brit Popsound. Now a band who are no strangers to main stage festival action, Slam Dunk 2013 wasn’t quite prepared for such atmosphere the Southerners omitted.Opening with ‘Hello,’ their set comprised of tracks off their extensive back catalogue they’ve quickly built up. Front man and cheeky chappy,Mikey Chapman is all about the show. Never once remaining static whilst on stage, the talented singer song writer brought with him dance moved, bouncy energy and fi rst rate live vocals with every track his band performed.Easily the highlight if the day and one which will no doubt go down inSlam Dunk history, Radio 1 belter ‘Death Rattle’ sums up all that is Mallory Knox...never once fl agging throughout their forty minute long set list, the band not only seize the moment but also bring along the crows on their roller coaster journey too.Other tracks ‘Lighthouse’ and ‘Bring Back’ followed, all emboding the very essence of the day. Deserved of a much higher slot at the best UK independent festival, Mallory Know are a band which we have an exceptionally good feeling about. Stemming from the Southern regions of the UK, Mallory Knox started off their career in 2006, gigging around local pubs and clubs in order to make a name for themselves. Recently been announced to perform at Leeds Festival - Main Stage - the quintet are not only the most passionate and talented musicians to emerge from an alternative rock scene. But are also destined for massive things...stay tuned.Check out their website on www.malloryknox.com or their facebook pagewww.facebook.com/malloryknox for updates. Info and exclusive pictures.

The Queen Musical ‘We Will Rock You’ was a fantastic musical night out at Sheffi eld Arena on Thursday 30th May.With the opening song of Innuendo, the stage is set to a futuristic production of bright fl ashing strobe lights and digital imagery to set the scene of the show, 300 years in the future the story unveils. Live music is banned and instruments have all been destroyed and are a vague memory of the past on the iplanet.Proceeded by Cyber Space Gaga the futuristic costumes were fabulous, with great singing and amazing energetic dance routines performed by the cast. With lead singer Galilieo Figaro (Mig Ayesa) meeting his love Scaramouch they have ‘Got to Break Free’ and meet fellow Bohemian rebels who are looking for a leader to make sense of the long forgotten music they hear in their dreams and to fi nd their rock and roll.Killer Queen (Brenda Edwards ‘The X Factor’) plays Head of Globalsoft, the corporation responsible for the banning of all instruments and musical originality played a fantastic part, dressed in leopard skin print and leather, sang with a fabulous strong entertaining voice.

Ex Coronation Street actor, Kevin Kennedy played a very entertaining and funny role as ageing hippy Pop.The orchestral band was amazing throughout playing tracks including Killer Queen, Under Pressure, A Kind of Magic, Crazy Thing Called Love, Who Wants to Live For Ever, Fat Bottom Girls and We Will Rock You, revealed themselves from behind the scenes in the second set of the performance..A very funny and witty story line that I wasn’t expecting, with songs and lyrics brilliantly adapted to the storyline of the show to include as many lines or titles to a classic Queen song.A thouroghly enjoyable evening.

It is an almost impossible mission to deifi er on which is the best one-day festival knocking about on the current UK music market. With each offering a blazing hot line-up to fans across the country, this year’s Slam Dunk may, however, have piped all its other competitors to the mark with an event we can just about sum up in one word…awesome.Held at Leeds University to a massive 6,000 strong audience, this year’s anticipated day was all about drawing together the very best in acoustic, hardcore, pop punk and alternative rock on the hottest day of 2013 so far. Kicking the Macbeth stage truly into fi ne shape, The Story So Far thrust us straight into the depths of the day. Although still barely old enough to buy themselves a pint back in their native homeland, the pop punk brigade set the tone perfectly for the rollercoaster ride of events.Main stage action coming from one of the highest tipped bands to blossom out of the last year of alternative rock, Mallory Knox’s performance keeps on growing with every show they deliver. Deserved of being much higher up on the festival bill, tracks ‘Death Rattle,’ ‘Hello’ and ‘Lighthouse’ all worked smoothly to emphasise the brute force displayed by the southern quintet.Seizing the reins and following on from their musical brethren, We Are The Ocean always bring together a lively show with pumped-up crowds, although a year down the line after their screams vocalist left, the group still have a way to go before reaching their originally belting live sound. Sleeping With Sirens a.k.a American sweethearts and easily the most talked about set of the day, commanded the stage with such ease and excitement, it seemed their 45 minute long set was far too short for such catchy pop punk tunes. With lead vocalist Kellin Quinn taking on the role of puppet master in dominating the attention of each and everybody witnessing, whatever you’ve got Kellin, bottle it and sell it, you’ll make millions by next month.Jonny Craig’s performance at Slam Dunk 2013 was easily the highlight of the day and one which will no doubt go down in festival history. Having battled his own personal demons to succumb to one of the fi nest singer song-writers of this generation, the former Dance Gavin Dance singer delivered a mix of old and new material to a totally packed out Keep A Breast Stage. Announcing his new work is to be released very shortly, we suggest you buy in a box of Kleenex as we have a suspicion it’ll be a teary one.Pop punk legends and one of the cheesiest set of faces on the planet, All Time Low did exactly what a headliner at a sold out festival should do to bring with them the most adrenaline riddled show of the entire day. We’ll forgive them for coming on half an hour late (although we won’t forgive the audience for singing Taylor Swift in the process) however with a set comprised of 5* anthems, if you’ve got a sore throat after singing ‘Time Bomb’ far too loud…blame Alex Gaskarth.

More news this week on the hotly-debated renaming of Uranus. Those boffi ns at NASA have suggested changing the planet’s currently somewhat offensive name of Uranus to… Urarsehole, which I think is a nice change as the word really rolls off your tongue.Don’t you hate it when friends go on holiday only to regale you with irritating facts about how hot it is on Facebook while you’re stuck in Blighty under conditions that could freeze Santa’s snowballs clean off? Well “Sunbagging” (telling the world your balls are roasting on Facebook) seems to be the new fashion at the moment with everyone posting how boiling it is in Africa, America, and pretty much the rest of Europe and I’m sick of it. So, if you’re going on holiday this year to somewhere warm and fabulous, you could at least avoid posting about it on Facebook, but if you DO have to post anything, a quick comment about how you picked up gastroenteritis from the tap water at a dubious Greek taverna is acceptable. Anything else is not. Back to the UK and the new series of the Only Way is Essex is back on our small screens and I see Kirk Norcross’ book has somehow crawled its way into The Times book chart at number three. That fact alone leaves me speechless, but at only twenty fi ve, the guy has barely lived a life, but the book is brimming with interesting facts about Kirk’s “action-packed” life, and it absolutely “isn’t” just a list of all the hundreds of shags he’s had with the loose women of Essex desperate to nail someone off the telly. To promote the book, Norcross decided to whip out his genitals on Skype, which I think is a nice change from the traditional route of doing a book signing. The Voice is about to start its live rounds and my only comment is that it was again pretty unsporting of ITV to have the fi nal of BGT on the same night as the fi rst live show. This is traditionally one of ITV’s crassest moments as they adjust their schedules to compete with other prime-time BBC shows - and then they have the audacity to moan when the BBC does the same in return. But it really doesn’t matter as no one’s going to watch The Voice anyway. Tom “I know God” Jones fi rmly declared that The Voice wasn’t a freak show this week,

but let’s look at the contestants - they’re all weird in some way. None of them have the X Factor; in fact most are rejects from other shows that simply didn’t have the look or the talent to progress any further. The Voice is the bottom of the barrel of talent shows…. Well it was until Alesha Dixon announced she was hosting a new series entitled ‘Your Face Looks Familiar’. I’m going to avoid the obvious joke I’d normally make about now involving Alesha Dixon and the word face, and say that is going to compete with Splash for lowest of the low brow TV shows. Do the production companies hire a bunch of monkeys to thrash away at typewriters until one of them comes up with a comprehensible sentence? Zelebrities have to answer questions to avoid being dropped into a vat of acid, they type… crikey – I’d pay the license fee ten times over to watch that show! And fi nally, Matt Smith has announced he’s leaving Doctor Who after the Christmas Day special and the geek community is alight with comments about who could replace him. While there have been some truly ridiculous comments about who will succeed the Time Lord, I think a ginger Somalian lesbian drug-addict would tick pretty much all of the BBC’s political correctness-assuaging boxes. What do you think? And that’s it for this week. More smut on Wednesday but if you are in on Saturday and you’re planning to vote on Britain’s Got Talent. Just remember, keep things British and give your vote to one of the Brits.

And I’ll be showing you all how to join the English Defence League in next week’s column.

It’s here! Yorkshire Clubland’s premier awards event is now open for your votes! Once again, we need YOUR votes in each of the categories- which this year are – Best Male Vocalist – Best Female Vocalist – Best Duo/Trio – Best Vocal Group – Best Live Band – Best Tribute Act – Best Newcomer – Best Comedy Act – and the Clubland Appreciation Award.

Last year’s Awards included a record number of new winners, and refl ected the wealth of young talent around Clubland. Tristan Drew, Laura Magann and Ellie Gent will no doubt be hoping to repeat their success as Best Tribute, Female and All Round winners, whilst The Cameleonz and Coast will be looking to do well again in the Best Duo and Best Live Band categories. Although Heidi Mills can’t repeat her success as Best Newcomer, she will no doubt hope to challenge Laura as Best Female! Meanwhile all-girl vocal group Halo will no doubt hope that they have caught our readers’ eye as Best Vocal Group for the third year running, and we always wonder who might have made the breakthrough to challenge Jimmy Carol in the comedy section.

In addition, the Clubland Appreciation Award will recognise long and outstanding contributions to entertainment – Paul Shane, who sadly passed away so recently, was a recent recipient of this award.

We will shortly be releasing details of the Awards Night in the autumn, featuring cameo performances from many of the winners, so watch the Mercury carefully for ticket details and book early! As usual, the night is sure to be a sell-out.

This year we have decided to make the voting window a little longer, to ensure the results fairly refl ect the current most popular acts in each category.

As always, readers can vote by post, email ([email protected]) and also this year by private message on our Facebook page! Votes will only count if they include nominations in a minimum of three categories, and multiple votes will not be included.

Last but certainly not least, we must thank our sponsors who help make the event such a success!

This week has seen me down at The Glebe Fishery in Leicestershire for my fi rst Marukyu Media Day! As the title suggests, an array of invited anglers, guests and press journalists were all attendant as Marukyu senior management divulged the secrets of the brand new product releases which will become available over the next few weeks, before everyone was invited to try the products for real on the bank....I spent much of my time looking for the opportunity to take photographs for use on the company website and social media pages, talking to anglers using the products, putting faces to names and generally ‘networking’ my way around the event which I enjoyed greatly. The new product range really does have something for all; from the match and pleasure angler all the way through to specimen and carp fi shermen, there is something that every angler can use. The Credence range of baits have been scientifi cally engineered to provide a ‘bait’ rather than a food source, so they really do attract fi sh from distance rather than just feed the ones in your swim! This achieves a competitive situation where the fi sh try to fi nd your bait fi rst! New groundbaits, price comparable with others on the market, will also make their fi rst appearance very soon, including dedicated silver fi sh and method mixes under the Luxus banner, so watch out for those too..Marukyu have long been associated with the JPz range; the new Jpelletz use the same technology to provide feed pellets designed to complement the existing range of JPz hook baits. I watched them in action on Tuesday and the results were remarkable! They can be added to groundbaits, particles mixes, loose fed, crammed in a feeder, Spombed or dampened and used on a method feeder, so the computations are boundless. Jpelletz added to corn and given a splash of the mighty Credence Marine liquid additive will certainly stir up the fi sh in your swim! The new liquid is a super sticky fl uid with adhesive qualities, so it sticks to hook baits, pellets or even maggots and does not simply wash off as soon as it hits the water...a great addition to any anglers armoury and sure to be a big hit. Also coming soon is the new Credence Corn; a credible alternative to imitation baits which can be hair rigged or hooked directly without posing a health risk to fi sh as it is completely biodegradable! I’ve used this stuff and taken a dozen fi sh on each piece before it has been lost, so I know it works. I’ve fi shed in some pretty horrendous conditions too throughout February and March and it has still proven consistent and easy to use. The corn will available in single grains or innovative ‘stacks’ to make hair rigging for big fi sh a simple task...get some, it’s the future of bait technology! That’s just a brief overview of what is coming soon from Marukyu Europe, but keep reading my weekly column to fi nd out more as I use the new baits throughout the year!

SP RTLOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEKSPONSORED BY CHAMPS

After last week’s Epsom classics it’s fairly low key fare on Channel 4 this Saturday with a couple of Group 3 races a Listed contest and some handicaps from Haydock and Newmarket. There are seven races in total scheduled to be shown and all look very tricky. With the weather set fair for the rest of the week it looks as though the going will be fast which could spring a few surprises from the form of recent weeks where there has been cut in the ground.

Saturday:Haydock:2.05 80’s Legends Here 22nd June Handicap, 4yo+, 0-100, 2m 45yds: My top-rated animal Palazzo Bianco will have the invaluable assistance of apprentice Robert Tart who takes off a very handy 5lbs and accordingly gets a quite confi dent nod to land this. This boy is going places fast and could be the fi nd of the season amongst the current crop of apprentices. Palazzo Bianco won last time out at Goodwood where he stayed on well to land a quite competitive looking 2 mile 0-85 handicap under this rider. The principal danger may come from the likes of Brockwell, Oriental Fox, Beyond Conceit and Watts Up Son, all of whom recorded very decent speed fi gures on their most recent outings and make up the reserves in that order along with Mica Mika and Sun Central.

2.40 Pinnacle Stakes (Fillies and Mares), Group 3, 4yo+, 1m 3f 200yds:Hughie Morrison’s Quiz Mistress is the selection in the hope that she turns out for the race after putting up an excellent time fi gure last time out when fi fth behind Glen’s Diamond in a Group 2 race at York. If she fails to show up the reserves are: Wild Coco, then Prussian followed by Testosterone, Jehannedarc, Reckoning and Albamara. If the selection fails to show up Wild Coco who makes her seasonal re-appearance here and looks to be easily the most threatening of the reserves (with a CV containing Group 2 and Group 3 wins and a course and distance win) would be a strong second choice.

3.15 Timeform Jury Stakes (Registered as The John O’ Gaunt Stakes), Group 3, 4yo+, 7f:From current jockey bookings this looks as though it could cut up quite badly yet. However if all the entries were to run it could turn out to be an exciting a competitive affair. Former winners at Group 2 level are: Libranno; Premio Loco; Red Duke; and Red Jazz while Arnold Lane; Monsieur Chevalier; and Pastoral Player (won this race last year) have all won at Group 3 level. Eton Forever goes well at this track and has won at Listed level, as has Amarillo and the admirably consistent Pintura has good handicap form and would not need to step up much to trouble these. In a veritable coin toss the selection is Arnold Lane who won a German Group 3 contest last time out. The reserve order is: Pintura; Eton Forever; Monsieur Chevalier; Red Jazz; and Red Duke.

3.50 British Stallion Studs EBF Cecil Frail Stakes, Listed, Fillies, 3yo+, 6f:If she makes the trip over from Ireland Edward Lynam’s Boston Rocker could take some beating. She ran really well when second to stable-mate Gathering Power in a Naas Irish premier handicap last time out and has placed form at Listed level from last year. Pearl Sea could be the one that gives her most to do, followed by Pleine Forme and Place in My Heart. Others that seem to running well at present are: Valais Girl; March; and Ladies are Forever.

Newmarket:2.20 Ladbrokes Charitable Trust Handicap, 4yo+, 0-95, 1m 2f:Jonjo O’Neill’s Prompter recorded the best last time out fi gure in my system when seventh behind First Mohican in a better race than this on good/soft ground at York. However he has only one win in a 7f Chester maiden in his CV and is therefore passed over on this occasion. Opera Box did next best last time followed by Basseterre, Proofreader, Assizes, Gabrial the Great and Songbird but none of these have jockey bookings yet and therefore may not run. However, one that looks likely to run from current jockey arrangements is my top-rated Status Symbol who gets the vote. The reserve order is: Duke of Clarence; Amoya; Pilgrim’s Rest; Niceofyoutotellme; Nabucco; and Ehtedaam.

2.55 Betfair Supporting The Animal Health Trust Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 6f: A very open and competitive sprint is what this promises to be. With many horses in decent form there ought to be no hard luck stories over this course which is usually very fair to the runners. It is likely therefore to fall to the one that feels best on the day and that has been primed for this. Sir Michael Stoute’s Enrol is on a winning run and looks to hold a good chance. Summerinthecity and Yeeow both also won last time out. Any of the four year olds in the fi eld could prove to be progressive this year and several put up good speed fi gures on their most recent outings, the best of which came from Nocturn. Secret Witness also put up a good fi gure last time out but the one that catches my eye most here and looks to me to be ahead of his current handicap mark is Brian Ellison’s Best Trip. His most recent win came over seven furlongs at Catterick but he is versatile in distance, has a relatively low handicap mark and may fi nd that they go enough of a

decent pace in this to give him a chance to pick them off late on. Of the many dangers the reserve order is: Nocturn; Secret Witness; Mezzotint; Intransigent; Valbchek; Summerinthecity; Crius; Gabriel’s Lad; Gatepost; Enrol; and Yeeow. (N.B. From jockey bookings to date it looks as though there could be many non runners).

3.30 John Sunley Memorial Levy Board Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 4f:With fi ve last time out winners and numerous last time out placed horses in the line up this is no easy matter either. My top lifetime ratings go to (in descending order): Biographer; De Rigeur; Vasily; Party Line; Tiger Cliff; Rawaki; Saptapadi; Fennell Bay; Parlour Games; and Rye House. Last time out best performances in my ratings were recorded by (again in descending order): Saptapadi; Rye House; Fennell Bay; Rawaki; Biographer; Dark Ranger; and Parlour Games & Ustura (joint). With a Listed win in his CV top weight Biographer could be up to taking this and he gets a (very) narrow vote over Tiger Cliff, Rye House and Saptapadi. Another one lurking in the fi eld with a last time out win over this distance at the track in a big handicap is No Heretic who also looks a potent danger.

Selection Summary (for reserves in the event of absences see above):Haydock: 2.05 Palazzo Bianco2.40 Quiz Mistress3.15 Arnold Lane3.50 Boston Rocker

Newmarket:2.20 Status Symbol2.55 Best Trip3.30 BiographerGood Luck!

Last week’s results:Epsom:Friday:1.35 Ultrasonic – 5th @ 15/22.10 Circumvent – 6th @ 12/12.45 Tales of Grimm – 5th @ 8/13.20 Takeitfromalady – 12th @ 33/14.00 Liber Nauticus – 5th @ 4/1

Saturday:1.35 St Paul de Vence – 9th @ 8/12.10 Haikbidiac – 3rd @ 3/12.40 Joshua Tree – 3rd @ 10/13.15 Long Awaited – 12th @ 11/24.00 Ocovango – 5th @ 8/1.

Somewhat predictably Epsom turned out to be a diffi cult meeting. Although the shortlisted animals in last week’s column contained a few winners (some at quite decent prices) the fi nal selections ran below par in the main and none won, recording a ten point loss to one point level stakes.

Incidentally I thought that the Derby was weird race and, as the time was slow, could take some persuading that it was up to normal standards.

PITCH WORKBEGINS

McMAHON AIMING HIGH

MEET DICKOV UPDATE

Unitedites shouldn’t be concerned by this picture of the Bramall Lane playing surface, because vital maintenance work and improvements to the drainage system are continuing to take place during the summer months. The top layer of the pitch has already been removed to allow sand bands to be inserted, which was necessary to upgrade the drainage system currently in place. All grass has been removed from the surface and after seeding took place on Wednesday, fertilisation will commence over the weekend and by the end of next week progress will be noticeable.Head Groundsman Glen Nortcliffe explained the importance of the maintenance work, in order to give the Blades the best possible playing surface in League One next term.Glen remarked: “At this time of the year it is crucial we get the top layer of the pitch up early.“This allows the necessary upgrades to be installed, before we start thinking about the actual surface.“We have seeded the pitch and by the start of the new season our pitch will be fully rye grass and one of the best in the country.“The real challenge comes as the games start to come thick and fast, but if we can get all the work completed in the coming weeks, then hopefully with a bit of luck in terms of the weather we can keep the pitch in the best possible condition.“That isn’t always easy given the make-up of the stadium, but discussions have already taken place about what other options are available, we are talking mainly about artifi cial lighting.“At the moment this process is in it’s infancy, once fertilised it will be around a week before we see the new grass, we will then continue to water and nurture the surface before starting cutting in mid June.”

Tony McMahon is already setting his standards high for next season and he is urging his team-mates to follow suit. The defender, who is likely to miss the fi rst few weeks of pre-season as he continues to recover from a troublesome Achilles problem, believes it is down to the players to hit the ground running after the disappointment of last season, regardless of who the new manager is at Bramall Lane.Looking ahead to next term and commenting on the current managerial vacancy at the Lane, McMahon remarked:“When the new manager arrives there will be some players who will probably have to move on and although it is never nice, it is part of football these days.“Whoever the new manager is we as players have to stick together get behind him and go again next season.“There is so much speculation going on at the moment, I have seen a lot of names mentioned throughout the last few weeks but at the moment nobody knows who it will be.“When we return on the fi rst day of pre-season, all the lads must be ready to graft hard because it won’t be easy, nor should it.“The new manager will expect a response from last season and it is down to the players to react positively.“I came here to win promotion last summer, so we have to make sure next season is our year.”
