village, this new build environmentally friendly family home nestles behind a number of traditional semi-detached properties. Prior to Hunter Architects & Planners involvement, the site had a chequered planning history with several failed attempts to achieve planning approval for a detached house. The owners wanted a fun, bright, contemporary but affordable family home, with good day-lighting, links to the garden, reduced bills and substantial storage. The result is a building of its time, designed by Timperley based Hunter Architects & Planners to respond to the site simply and elegantly, whilst minimising the potential overlooking from neighbouring dwellings.

The main family and kitchen areas open onto the garden via large south facing folding doors, with the more private rooms at the rear of the property looking onto a smaller courtyard garden. The master suite is contained within the roof, where the pitch creates high ceilings and substantial storage within the eaves spaces.

Whilst constructed on a tight budget, the architects approach and imaginative designs have created a unique house with a number of bespoke elements included such as a custom made front door, staircase and kitchen. The kitchen was designed by the

Architects and constructed by a local craftsmen and the design creates a timeless, sleek, but functional family kitchen which has become the heart of the home.

The house was constructed to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, to demonstrate that a sustainable family home can be developed on a commercially viable budget. The strategy was to incorporate features that would have an immediate and ongoing benefit to the occupiers with little maintenance or detailed knowledge. Thus low water use of less than 80 litres/ person/ day is achieved by rainwater harvesting (for use in the WC’s, the sprinkler system, washing machine and externally) as well as low flow rate taps and efficient appliances. Solar gains from large areas of south facing glazing along with a heat exchanger ensure minimal use of the underfloor heating, while electrical demand is reduced by incorporating good day lighting generally as well as 80% dedicated energy efficient

light fittings.

The house also meets Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes accreditation. Secured by Design is a Police initiative which focuses on crime prevention at the design, layout and construction of homes. Lifetime Homes is a concept to develop flexible and adaptable homes which incorporate elements to support the changing needs of individuals and families at different stages of life.

The concepts and ideas incorporated into this house, including the sense of space and light as well as energy efficiency measures are equally as valid for existing homes, whether by way of upgrading, remodelling or extensions.

transformation of the gardens on the corner of Moss Lane and Park Road continues. The Friends of Moss Park Gardens have been successful in convincing the Council of the potentially unsafe condition of the sub-station canopy. If everything

goes according to plan, by the time you read this, the canopy will have been demolished. We can then”goodbye” ( or will it be “good riddance”) to a local blot on the landscape. Once the work is completed, the Friends intend to create a stunning flower bed in front of the sub-station to mask

some of its less pleasing features.You doubt that spring is in the air ? Look closely at the flower bed around the perimeter of the gardens. Hundreds of bulbs which were planted last autumn are already pushing through the cold soil and should be flowering soon. In addition, the

two raised flower beds have been planted up with wallflowers and winter flowering pansies and the many dozens of polyanthus should be a riot of colour before too long.

A number of the Friends are keen to know more about the history of the gardens site. We know it has not always been gardens and we are told that 50/60 years ago two very old cottages stood on the site. Do you have any memories or photographs of the site which you could share with us ? If so, do please let us know. We would love to hear from you.

This would seem an opportune time to express a few words of thanks. Firstly, to Trafford Council’s officers and maintenance team for their co-operation and continuing support. YogaView Timperley caught up with

Janet Long, a yoga teacher who practises and teaches yoga right here in Timperley.

What is Yoga?

Yoga originated in South East Asia over 3000 years ago. The term is from the ancient Sanskrit language and means “to unite” or “to be whole”. In effect, the primary aim of yoga is to bring mind, body and spirit into union to create health and happiness. One of the ways of doing this is by practising Hatha Yoga (i.e. physical postures and breath work). How long have you practised Yoga?

I have been practising Yoga for just over 7 years.

How did you get into Yoga?

Like most people in this country I started yoga as a way of getting fit and toned. I have always been quite flexible doing gymnastics

when I was at school and then going to aerobic and step aerobic classes in my early 20s but had got out of the habit of attending an exercise class after I had started to have pains in my knees. This is often a result of high impact workouts so when I decided I needed to get back into exercise I thought yoga would be a safer option.

Can a student continuously develop through Yoga?

Yes they can, I think that as with most things in life you never stop learning. There are often variations and modifications that can be made to poses which help beginners become familiar with how their body should move and feel and then over time they find they can deepen a pose or stay there for a longer period. I have had students who initially couldn’t reach the floor when

they bent forward but through practicing yoga regularly now can do so easily.

Why do you think people can feel intimidated by Yoga? How can they overcome this?

Often people are put off because they are convinced that everyone who goes to Yoga classes will be skinny, ultra fit and very flexible. They may have concerns regarding their body image or health problems. I have even heard that some people think Yoga is a religious thing and that somehow the teacher will try to convert them! This is certainly not the case and anyone irrespective of religious/spiritual beliefs can enjoy the benefits of a yoga class.

I would always suggest that anyone thinking of taking up Yoga contacts the teacher of the class they hope to join to find out if the class is suitable for beginners but also what the

also a mental & emotional level. I always incorporate relaxation into my classes, as I am a firm believer that this is a very necessary part of the session.

CricketAshley Cricket Club recently

announced the start of Junior coaching sessions for players of all ages on Monday evenings at Sale Grammar School. New and existing players are very welcome and spaces are available in all age groups from Under 9 to Under 15 for players who are new to the game or have some experience already. Players aged 5 to 9 and will have an hours coaching from 7pm and then the Under 11s and Under 13s will be coached from 8pm till 9pm.

The club has a large number of volunteer, qualified coaches who will make sure the players have an enjoyable time. There will be plenty of exercises to improve agility, balance and co-ordination before a number of games to finish off each session

making sure all players are fully involved.

Frank Sidebottom StatueShortly after the untimely death of Frank

Sidebottom, a group of fans, friends and family got together to organize a celebration of his life.

Over 5,000 came to Castlefield arena to watch a performance by Franks backing band, the Oh blimey big band and old friends like Marc Reily and John Ronson gathered to celebrate his life.

During those plans, the same friends and fans decided a more permanent tribute would be fitting and a facebook group called “lets get a statue of Frank Sidebottom in Timperley” was created. Within days there were over 3000 members.

A committee and working group has been set up, a construction drawn and plans to raise the required £60,000 have been kicked off.

Potato cakes, purple sprouting broccoli & poached egg

Makes 4 potato cakes: 200g baked potato | 200g grated raw potato | 200g plain flour | 300ml milk |

Pinch of salt |1 tbsp horse radish [optional]

Remove the baked potato from the skin and mash. Add the grated raw potato, flour and a pinch of salt to the mashed potato and mix. Slowly stir in the milk and combine. If you fancy a bit of a kick, add a tablespoon of horse radish sauce.

Heat up a knob of butter in a frying pan. Drop four large dollops of the mixture into the hot pan and spread with a fork.

When lightly browned turn the potato cakes over and continue to cook for a further 3-4 minutes. Squeeze a drop of lemon juice over the potato cake for that extra zing and serve with lightly steamed purple sprouting broccoli and a poached egg.

�0�� – a year of hope for AltrinchamAltrincham and Bowdon Civic

Society intend to build on a busy year in 2010.

In a new year’s message to the people of Altrincham, Judie Collins, the newly elected Chairman of Altrincham and Bowdon Civic Society said:-

“There is a lot to look forward to. The £19 million pounds refurbishment of Altrincham interchange will go before the Planning Committee soon. The only point of contention now is whether to retain the historic footbridge.

“We are hoping that the revamping of Station Buildings

(next to the interchange) will progress rapidly.

“Although Trafford Healthcare Trust is to become part of a larger Foundation Trust, the Civic Society has been assured that the new building for Altrincham hospital will go ahead albeit with a new owner.”

The Committee, which now includes representatives from the Broadheath partnership and Altrincham market, invites members of the public to attend their bi-monthly meetings which take place at 2 pm. at Altrincham Town Hall.

The next two meetings are on

Thursdays, 24th February and 7th April.
