Themed ‘Shaping the Future Economy of Is-
kandar Malaysia’, YAB Dato’ Mohamed Khaled
Nordin, Menteri Besar of Johor Bahru officiated
the event in the morning while YB Dato Seri
Mustapa Mohamed graced the event despite his
busy schedule and delivered the Ministerial Key-
note Address in the afternoon. The Symposium
featured a line-up of high-profile speakers from
IKEA, Forest City and AirAsia who shared their
unique business propositions to be leader in their
fields. In the Plenary Sessions, top leaders
shared their insights on what could be the new landscape in
the next 10 years and how can Iskandar Malaysia reinvent
itself and adapt in the changing technology landscape. The
panelists include Mr Manohar Khiatani, Deputy Group CEO,
Ascendas-Singbridge, En Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib, MD and
CEO of UEM Sunrise, Ms Sarena Cheah, Managing Director
- Malaysia and Singapore, Property Division, Sunway Ber-
had, En Shahrull Alam, CEO Johor Ports and many more.
The Symposium brought together more than 650 people rep-
resented by our key stakeholders, investors and business
communities. We have 62 speakers/panelists and modera-
tors from local and international with representatives from
more than 16 Chambers of Commerce, Associations and
Business Councils. 6 Ambassadors/Counsel General/First
Secretary led by HE Vanu Gopala (Singapore), HE Maria
Castillo (EU) and HE Masahiko Horie (Special Assistant to
Minister of Foreign Affairs Japan took time to the Symposi-
um.
According to YB MITI Minister, Iskandar Malaysia remains
one of the key beneficiaries of the improving economy espe-
cially with all the investor-friendly factors in place along with
its positioning as a choice destination for Investment, Work
and Living.
In his opening address, YAB Dato Seri Khaled Nordin urged
investors (local and foreign) to embrace Industrial
4.0 and new technologies for Johor to remain
competitive and relevant in the global market.
Invest Iskandar Malaysia 2017 Symposium, touted as the biggest
and most comprehensive investment-related event in the south-
ern economic corridor was held on 3 to 4 October at the Phoenix
Hotel, Forest City in Johor. The Symposium organised by Iskan-
dar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) is part of the Invest
Iskandar Malaysia series and was also one of the signature
events in conjunction with Iskandar Malaysia’s year-long 10th
anniversary celebration (IM10).
Held over 2 days, the Symposium focused on three main areas of
economic growth which drive the sustainable development of
Iskandar Malaysia. These are: investments and moving forward
strategies, digital
economy and green
economy. There

Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, the Chief Executive of IRDA said “This
conference is a platform for the gathering of corporate leaders,
policy makers, investors – existing and potential Iskandar Ma-
laysia investors alike, and various professional practitioners
from the public and private sectors as well as community lead-
ers and influencers, from Malaysia and overseas.”
“As we move closer towards our maturity as an economic cor-
ridor in 2025, it is timely to envision the future economy of Is-
kandar Malaysia. We are willing to learn from foreign and local
experts on the new transformative forces which can change
the economic landscape and provide great business opportu-
nities and not forgetting the lessons that we can take away
from the past years,” he added.

erated by IRDA’s Nagara-
jan Prakash. In this ses-
sion, we heard from AEGIS
and Politeknik Ibrahim Sul-
tan bringing insights on the
supply and demand for talent.
In the Destination Iskandar Malaysia session moderated by
Prof Dr Amran Hamzah, UTM, we saw interesting presenta-
tion and discussion on Big Move 3 Destination Iskandar,
health tourism, opportunities in Muslim travel market as well as
Forest City’s tourism strategies.

Day 2—Digital Economy—Smart Cities and Digital Transfor-
mation
In the afternoon, we started off with the welcoming address by
Datuk Ismail. The sessions for digital economy were very in-
tense with exciting presentations and discussions by leading
players in the digital world such as SAS Malaysia, China Tele-
kom, Smart City Consorti-
um Hongkong, Microsoft

presentations by TM One,
Telekom Malaysia.

were presented by speakders from Japan (Kyoto and Toyama
city), United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia and Taiwan.
