Everything you need under one roof

Family owned and run business

A Survival GuideThe Family Day TripThis is about survival against all the odds. You and your family, aka team leader and team, are going on a day trip.

You, the team leader, will need to be one step ahead of the rest of the team at all times because once you’re out there, you’re on your own.

Let’s look at the tactical skills you will need to employ in addition to your own natural leadership skills and cunning (not enough when set against the average family outing). It is invariably the simplest things which can make or break a team expedition.

Planning and PreparationResearch your destination. Make a note of what it’s got

and more importantly, what it hasn’t got. Is it family friendly? Has it got ramps for the use of those teams trailing infants and their strollers as well as teams

graced by a grandparent’s presence (these elders can move when they want to but know and exercise their rights)? A little foresight can avoid a day’s lumbering up and down endless steps carrying, dragging or pushing team members who require the use of your fatigued arms. There must be a dunny within striking distance. The Australian bush is no place to risk baring your rear!

Consult with your team and come to an agreement on what its members want to see and do (your own needs, in your capacity as a parent, will obviously become

secondary or discounted completely). Advise the team that only so many activities can be crammed into one day. Agree on the most important. This may save you from much sulking and argument at a later stage.

Decide on what you need to take. Essential if you want to reach the end of the day in full possession of your sanity. Do involve your intrepid adventurers at this stage so that nothing important (to them) is left out. This could avoid blame, tears, tantrums and such cries as, “I want my dummy”, when the dummy in question is back home on the kitchen bench and the nearest dummy shop 200km to the west.

Attention to detail is everything, so make a list of what to bring and where to pack it. If the journey is to be a long one, provide easily accessed survival rations. One does not want to have to stop a vehicle, previously bowling merrily along, and unload half of it to get at the food and water supplies whilst sweating and cursing in the baking heat. You will also want to pack clothing and footwear to cover all climatic eventualities.

A portable games console or DVD player will delay or even prevent the otherwise inevitable cries of “are we

there yet” from team members that are left to make their own amusements. If there is an incontinent infant amongst your team, don’t forget the nappies. Never forget the nappies. Remember too, the first aid kit. If a member of the team gets taken out of action, it will constitute your doctor on call. One tiny plaster can placate even the most wounded of soldiers.

Agree on departure times with team members. Your happy day out will start on the wrong footing if the whole team but one are sweltering in the car waiting for that member who has rushed back indoors with the cry of, “I’m just going back for my sunscreen”, and takes half an hour finding it while the rest of the team get heatstroke.

Teenagers may be too proud to be seen with the team, so give them the choice of staying at home. They will suspect that you might have a better time without them so they will insist on coming and enjoy the day all the more because it was “their” decision to go.

Bribery and CorruptionIf the day is to run smoothly, you may need to use some form of bribery and corruption. Make yourself aware of your team’s “currency” and spend

Promotion: Families Through the LensWe are looking forward to the launch of our Families through

the Lens Project starting in February 2011

Families from across the Port are invited to join in a photographic journey that will provide an opportunity to reflect on their lives as part of a family. Here is an opportunity to highlight your strengths,

struggles and aspirations as a family member.

A photographic exhibition will then take place during Families Week 2011 as a celebration of our journey.

Workshops will be held throughout the Port Stephens area. This is a free project and child-care will be available on-site.

accordingly. Depending on the age of the individual, successful forms of currency have been known to include lollies, gift shop toys and gadgets, dummies and in some cases, actual dollars (or simply beer in the event you have to bribe Dad). This tactic is particularly powerful when attempting to diffuse a potential meltdown situation.

Imagine the scene: “If you’ll walk just a little further, we’ll come to the ice cream kiosk.” Or, “If you take your brother on the Super Gigantor Destruction ride, thus saving me from doing it, you can have that ‘Make Your Own Kangaroo’ set from the gift shop that you wanted.” A word on the gift shop: These are strategically positioned, rather like some sort of giant live trap. Even the greatest team leader has no chance of escaping them. Therefore it is sensible to impose a budget on team members beforehand so that you will not stagger, bankrupt, from one of these fiendish devices.

Remember not to agree to every request though, or the team member will become super demanding and fractious. A prearranged budget can avoid much stomping of feet and folding of arms.

The only use of a gift shop other than enriching the park owners is that you can use it as a meeting point if anybody gets lost or separated from the body of the team. All

children can find their way instinctively to a gift shop. In the unlikely event of no gift shop, select a safe and easy to remember landmark.

Land NavigationHowever far you intend to travel, do not leave home without the necessary maps. If you get “lost”, see it as a chance to appreciate the scenery and think of it rather in terms of “you haven’t arrived yet”. On no account ask Dad to stop and ask a civilian for directions. He is the alpha male here and he will get you there with his own infallible sense of direction or not at all. A skilled team leader will know when to hold her peace and let him get on with it.

It is worth remembering that in a recent study it appears that men are, in fact, equipped with the ability to read maps better, while women are better at remembering routes. So

it stands to reason that delegation for the navigation of a journey rests on whether you’ve been there before.

To conclude, if you have your survival skills down pat, you should be able to survive any fun day out with mind and body intact. Your day will be a miracle of organisation and harmony rather than a battle of wits and external elements. You will be able to watch the downfall of less prepared teams and hear the griping and grizzling of their team members. You will not, of course, gloat over these poor unfortunates.

So, with proper forethought, you and your family can enjoy

the happy team spirit uniting you and yours. So, jolly day tripping to all the wonderful places that our region has to offer.

Can you remember the last time you got together with your best friends for some quality time? If your answer to that is “hmmm”, “well”, “ahhh” or simply “no”, then it’s high time you put aside the stresses and strains of modern day living, combined with being a mum, and reconnect with your gang of girlfriends for some me, me, me time.

We’ve rounded up some great ideas to give you some inspiration and get you thinking outside the box when organising your next girly adventure, so get your guest list together (the more the merrier), book the babysitter and get plotting and planning.

1. Day oF BeaUTyAs busy mums, how often do we get the chance to experiment with hair, make-up and beauty treatments? Not very often! So why not make an event of it. Start by meeting your gals for an energizing breakfast, then unleash on the shops for

appears on the top of their paper. Place all the papers in a box, then take turns picking and reading them out. The other guests have to try and guess who the memory relates to with the aid of clues (injected of course with plenty of humour). This game also creates a great keepsake.

3. FashIon swaPA great way to refresh your wardrobe is by getting your girls to round up all the clothes, shoes and accessories they no longer wear (or fit into). Each person should bring at least two items to swap. Voilà, your lounge room is dramatically transformed into an exclusive and chic boutique. Tip: Create even more fun (and laughs) by staging a fashion show.

4. TasTe saFaRIAlso known as the “restaurant crawl”, Port Stephens has a plethora of award winning eateries with which to tease and tantalise your taste buds. This will take some pre-planning, so recruit your friends to nominate a tempting treat they’ve not tried before and then get them to research where to find their chosen delicacy. Next, plan your safari route, then prepare to enjoy an expedition of arousing aromas and fantastic flavours.

5. Be FaBULoUsWith the latest Sex & The City film creating a storm in a stiletto, it’s time for us all to get glam and feel first-class. Dust down your most spectacular outfit and team with those (pre-child)

your make-up and beauty products (be as daring as you like with a new shade of eyeshadow or lipstick you wouldn’t normally consider). Refuel with a relaxing lunch then head back to your designated child and man free zone for an afternoon/evening of pampering and relaxation. Follow your beauty fix with a take-away, home made cocktails and a chick flick marathon. Tip: Create your own beauty treatments by researching recipes online and using inexpensive items from your very own kitchen. Great fun can be had concocting interesting age-busting potions.

2. Games nIGhTEnlist each of your guests to bring round their favourite board game for an evening of friendly rivalry, or get inventive and make up your own. One idea is to reminisce with the memory box game: write your friends names on a piece of paper, fold them over, shuffle and hand out. Each person then writes an amusing anecdote they remember about the friend whose name

skyscraper heels that have been sitting redundantly in the back of the wardrobe. Don’t forget to dazzle with your most outrageous bling. Of course, this night would not be complete without booking a limo, a table at a top restaurant and a room at a swanky hotel. Tip: Don’t forget to extend the luxury come morning with a leisurely breakfast in bed, courtesy of room service.

6. have an aDvenTUReWe all want to try something we’ve never dared consider before. Perhaps you would like to discover your sensual self with a giggle-some group pole dancing lesson. Or maybe you want to feel your adrenaline pumping with a boom netting experience: some of the Port’s cruise ships offer this experience alongside their dolphin watches, so it’s like having a high speed spa in the company of our loveable marine friends. For added excitement, get one suggestion from each friend, put them in a hat and select at random!

Indulge Yourself

This mum needs a break! She’s mum to two children aged 2 and 10 and lives in Salt Ash.

5:30am: I am rudely awoken by the cackling cry of the Kookaburra.

5:32am: A small but piercing 2 year old voice (“M”) drills into my eardrums demanding “get up NOW Mummy.”. After failing to find the bargaining tools necessary to buy an extra 10 minutes of slumbersome bliss I heave my weary form out of bed and make the mistake of glancing in the mirror sans hair and make-up.. Neanderthal woman glowers back at me.

6:00am: The previous 30 minutes have been loudly punctuated by insistent demands for cereal, toast and the Teletubbies. The breakfast production line is rolling and food is prepared whilst the cat is carrying out a studied assault on my ankles with the kind of stealth and precision only normally seen in military operations. His armament, ie. tooth and claw, being specially sharpened on the furniture overnight.

6:10am: This sees the bleary appearance of my 10 year old (“D”), accompanied by urgent demands for sustenance and followed by bickering screams of “I want to watch something”, “no it’s my turn” etc. etc.

9:00am: With completely unfounded expectations of my two obedient children virtuously assisting me with the grocery shopping, I herd them into the car and we embark upon our weekly trip … this after the smallest and bossiest member of the family having taken fifteen fractious minutes to decide on the sort of clothes and shoes in which the fashion conscious toddler should be seen.

9:30am: Scorning the idea of a “lovely ride in the trolley”, M decides that I should carry her around the shop instead. After struggling one handed with an evil right-veering trolley, I entrust the steering to D. In moments, the trolley and D are hurtling gleefully down the aisle to certain doom in the pickled produce section. Other mothers with polite and well behaved offspring marching behind them, gloat in smug satisfaction as I scream “NO!”, a little too loudly and desperately.

12:00: Home. Battle-scarred. I start up the lunch production line and am immediately chastised by D for not providing sufficient choice on the menu.

1:30pm: A walk up to the playground. I push M sitting princess-like in her pram while D zigzags in and out of my path on his scooter using death defying manoeuvres which would be the envy of the cat. M declares our little trip “very exciting”. We all enjoy our excursions to the playground - rare occasions where nothing ever seems to go wrong and everyone is happy.… until I decide I am 9 years old again and decide to climb up the slippery dip at high speed where I bang my head on the bar at the top with extreme force. It’s nice to see the children laughing so heartily. M declares “do it again Mummy”.

5:30pm: Dad returns from work and retreats immediately to his “cave” … the shed. In the meantime the dinner production line is cranking into gear with M, Mummy’s little helper, assisting vigorously. D wishes to know if his meal is ready yet 5 minutes after I have begun to make it, with agonized cries of “I’m starving”.

8:00pm: The kids are slumbering sweetly in their beds, the husband is comatose on the sofa (remote control can now be surgically removed from his grip) … peace and sanctuary at last!

ARE YOU PREPARED?When Christmas is just a distant memory and the summer holidays are nearing the end, you will find yourself looking down the business end of a new school term. This is a time of mixed feelings for everyone: excitement, nerves, anticipation and a little sadness that the lazy days are almost over. Here are some tips to help make the transition run as smoothly as possible.

RoutinesIt is essential to restore order and get the kids back into their pre-holiday routine as quickly as possible before the start of a new term. Let them know your expectations, lay down the rules, then stick consistently to them. Pay particular attention to bringing into line morning and bedtime routines. Make sure older kids are aware of their new school night curfews. A week to two weeks at least should be allowed in order to iron out the wrinkles and deal with the inevitable complaints.

Eating SchedulesHave you found that due to the warmer days and lighter evenings, your family have been eating later and later during the holiday weeks? When school’s out it’s also easy to slip into the habit of letting older kids fix their own snacks to fuel their busy social commitments. As the end of the school holiday approaches, this is a perfect time to get back to the traditional family sit down meal. Not only a good way of allocating a more reasonable eating hour, but a time for the family to reconnect and share the events of the day.

Clothing, Shoes and EquipmentYou’ll find all manner of school equipment has mysteriously disappeared from your kids’ school bag during the break, strangely never to be seen again. You may also find that they have grown out of certain clothes and shoes. With your kids’ involvement, make a checklist of items they will require for the new school term. Go shopping together and let them choose their own equipment (good to set a budget for this first, so they are aware of what you are prepared to spend).

By giving your family the time and the tools to adjust, you can ensure that your kids go back to school rested, refreshed and prepared.

The wrong structure or the wrong property can have you down the gurgler before you know it. Investment property finance is all about “the correct structure”, so that you are not impacting your wallet on a weekly basis while you are waiting for the property to appreciate in value. There is no use trying to make money out of real estate if it’s going to mean that you have to compromise your lifestyle.

There are all sorts of asset creation strategies, but my personal preference is property. I like the idea that I can “see” my property and that real estate has a proven history for wealth creation. Some of the wealthiest people I know have made the majority of their money through property. The other advantage with property is that you don’t usually need a lot of money to get started. You can take a mortgage out on a property for a high percentage of the cost of the property, which means that you need little (if any) of your own money (depending on your circumstances of course). There can also be the advantage of having a tenant who is helping to pay off your debt while it is appreciating in value, along with the tax benefits associated.

I now specialize in investment property finance and teach other people how to structure their finances, so that they are in a position to be able to buy property for wealth creation.

Inspirational Mums

Anita Marshall of Port Stephens, is widely recognized as a leader in the mortgage broking and investment property industries.

Anita was selected as a co-author in publications “The Path to Success” and “Sprout The Life You Love”, along with other renowned visionaries, authors and world class leaders, sharing messages of personal success. Anita was winner of the 2009 NSW/ACT AFG Regional Broker of the Year, plus made it into the 2009 List of Elite Brokers in Australia. Anita operates her business from her office at 10 Shearwater Drive, Taylors Beach.

Anita’s personal story is about how she transformed her life when she decided it was time to do something with her abilities. A word from Anita:-

I had always believed in my abilities and knew I was under-achieving, so I started looking around for different opportunities. I had only ever finished grade 10 at high school and had been working in finance for many years. I enrolled in an Advanced Diploma of Business Management, and after I graduated it was cemented in my mind that I wanted to run my own business. I also had to keep in mind that I was first and foremost a mother to my

son Blake, so whatever business I operated needed to be flexible for me as a parent.

I decided on a mortgage brokerage business, “Advanced Finance Solutions”, and originally operated my office from my 3rd bedroom. I had enough money to last me about three months. Failing wasn’t an option. Business started flowing in as a result of hard work coupled with my determination and passion to succeed.

I believe that success requires strong self-belief. I believed in myself and my ability to succeed. I couldn’t afford to be complacent, so I didn’t just sit back and wait for the universe to deliver my dreams. I needed to fast-track the delivery. Action and belief was the key to my success. Your dreams and goals will become reality a lot faster if you work towards them, so I stepped out of my comfort zone. I coupled my “goals” with “strategies” and created “plans”, then took “action” steps on a daily basis. I also shared my knowledge with other people and learned from everyone around me - not just from their successes, but also their mistakes. Everyone has a story, so be an active listener and try to pick up a life lesson from everyone you meet!

I began a crazy learning curve and would be up from 4am studying the variety of products and ways to structure finances. This is when I became finance and property savvy and realized that I was in a position to be able to purchase further real estate myself, without it draining my existing resources. I have always believed that property is an excellent vehicle for wealth creation. The finance side of property can be rather confusing and for most people the idea of debt scares the hell out of them!

When choosing a property, it is important to do your research and buy in “growth” areas. You can speed up the time it takes for real estate to increase in value by buying in the right area.

I have now upgraded my car, my home, have opened an office and have several investment properties. It’s not just about the assets or money though – it’s “peace of mind and happiness.” Blake and I have a wonderful, fun and happy lifestyle. We now live in a gorgeous 4 bedroom home where we enjoy spending time with friends and family. We have at least two annual holidays, one of which is always to the Myall Lakes and Blake is now fast becoming a skilled wake boarder.

My message to you is that if you are sitting back thinking that you would like to achieve more in your life, then do something about it. If you are not earning enough to finance your ideal lifestyle then start looking for other options.

mechanism. The gate should never be left propped or tied open. It is amazing how many people leave their pool open so that their kids can get in easily, or so the dog can get to the shade! Even if you don’t have very small children yourself, there may still be neighbours or unexpected visitors who are able to get in.

If these simple guidelines are followed, it is unlikely that you will have a drowning or near drowning accident. However, if this does happen to someone in your family, or a neighbour or

friend, resuscitation skills are essential and lifesaving! Cardiopulmonary Resusitation (CPR) is easy to learn.

In The SpotlightDon’t Become

A HeadlineKids have fun in the water. Whether it is learning to splash in the bath as a baby, or playing at the beach or the family pool, all kids love the water. Water is an important part of a child’s intellectual and physical development, and is part of the environment where they learn about themselves and the world around them. Children are curious about water, and are attracted to it.

Unfortunately water can also be dangerous, and drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five in Australia. According to the Royal Life Saving Society’s Drowning Report 2010, forty-eight children under the age of fourteen died from drowning in Australia in a twelve month period. It is estimated that for every child who drowns, another four or five have a near-drowning experience, which can sometimes leave the victim with life long brain damage. Regularly we hear or read in the news of another child who has tragically drowned.

Fortunately, with some simple steps, the risk of drowning accidents can be reduced to almost zero. Kidsafe NSW lists buckets, nappy buckets, baths, wading pools, swimming pools, spas and ponds as common risks. Infants can easily drown in a few centimetres of water, and are unable to get themselves out of trouble. Removing simple risks such as buckets and nappy buckets is easy and quick. Garden ponds should be covered with steel mesh to prevent children from falling in when their curiosity

gets too much, and wading pools and baths should always be emptied when not being used.

Adult supervision is essential when children are around water. If the phone rings when your child is in the bath, either remove the child from the bath, or don’t answer the phone! You can always call back. Similarly, don’t try to cook and bathe kids at the same time. Children should

always be supervised while in the pool. Older children often get distracted by their own play, so should not be left in charge. If there a number of children in your pool, it is essential that at least one adult acts as a nominated ‘lifeguard’. This person should not consume alcohol, and should be near the pool at all times. The Royal Lifesaving Society has a ‘Keep Watch” bucket hat for supervisors at their online store.

It is also important to ensure children can’t get access to your pool when they are not meant to. All home swimming pools should have an appropriate fence and a childproof gate. The fence needs to be in good repair, with no holes or gaps. Even toddlers can climb, so it is important not to have outdoor furniture or anything else near the fence. The gate also needs to be in good working order, with a self-closing

Courses are short and inexpensive. All adults and teenagers who have a home pool should learn the skills. Hopefully you will never need to use them, but CPR can save a life and needs to be commenced as soon as possible. Heartbeat First Aid is based in Port Stephens and offers certified first aid and CPR training. In addition, Heartbeat First Aid has a short course (one evening) for parents to learn essential first aid (including CPR) for looking after children. This course is not suitable for child care workers or the workplace. Contact Heartbeat First Aid at [email protected].

Drowning is a tragedy that doesn’t need to happen. It can be prevented by simple precautions, such as removing hazards, ensuring that pool gates and fences are in good condition, and providing adequate supervision. Should an accident happen, resuscitation skills can help save a life. Don’t let your family, friends or neighbours be exposed to the life long anguish that follows a tragic pool accident. Make sure that all your family pool time is fun time!

Party Idea - Cooking with kids

Kids love to create, and boys and girls alike will relish being a chef for the day, with this hands-on party idea! Here are some tips to help you prepare:

1. Choose your recipes and make a shopping list (1 main dish and 1 dessert is plenty)... Our favourites are pizzas and cup cakes: delicious and relatively easy to prepare.

2. Buy or make chef’s hats and aprons for the guests. www.designeronline.com.au has a fantastic 6 pack of colourful chefs hats and aprons under their “baby & kids” tab, which are perfect for a party group.

3. Write the recipe down on individual menu cards for the children to follow, or on a large chalk board.

4. Get all the ingredients prepared in advance so the kids aren’t kept waiting.

5. Use a large table lined with paper or plastic for easy clean up after.

6. Offer each ingredient in individual plastic cups or on paper plates, so there are no “sharing” issues.

7. Keep the kids away from the oven while the food is cooking and give them stickers to decorate their chefs hats while they are waiting.

The kids will most likely enjoy eating their delicious creations even more than they did making them!
