A s this will be my last column, I would like to sincerely thank you all

for your support and friendship over the past three years. It has been an honour and a privilege to be your County Chairman

I would like to share with you some of my experiences as I have travelled the length and breadth of the county to join you at special events, birthday celebrations and even modelled at a Fashion Show organised by Membership Support Sub-Committee.

I have driven down winding lanes where the hedges have touched the wing mirrors of the car, on motorways when representing the Federation at conferences and meetings, even taking to the skies to visit St. Mary’s Isles of Scilly WI. That was memorable, not only because I met the members, but I have never been on such a small plane!!

One of my first events after taking over the office of Chairman was to act as car park steward at Chy Noweth. Unable to find a high viz. jacket, I donned a bright yellow poncho

only to find that Mickey Mouse was emblazoned on the back.

It has a great pleasure to plant a tree at Trematon WI, when I joined them for their party to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

My diary and my treasure boxes are full of very happy memories too numerous to mention here, but I have enjoyed meeting so many of you at your anniversary celebrations, some of which have been delicious lunches or dinners in hotels and restaurants, others have been in your own WIs with marvellous homemade cream teas. I have shaken so many hands and received many welcoming smiles. It was also a pleasure to take some of you to Denman in 2013. Hopefully I can join you on a course in 2015.

The business side of the coin has been to chair the meetings of the Board of Trustees to ensure the smooth running of the Federation and to work with all the sub-committees who organise a variety of events for all of you and to work alongside the team of staff at Chy Noweth who serve the Federation so well. I have represented CFWI at National events and especially

NATIONAL CENTENARY ANNUAL MEETING 2015

Although it seems a long way off, we need to start making arrangements for what I am sure will be a very memorable meeting. The meeting will take place at The Royal Albert Hall, London on Thursday June 4th 2015 and we have already booked accommodation at The Corus Hotel, Hyde Park for bed & breakfast on the night of Wednesday June 3rd.It was announced at this year’s National Annual Meeting that one in every two WIs

would be able to send a delegate instead of the normal one in four and your secretary will have received, this month, the new linking list preparedonly for next year. Last year’s linking list should now be destroyed.

If your WI is due to find a delegate in 2015, please elect her this month. If you cannot find a delegate in your WI this month you should, without delay, contact the WI you are representing to see if they can provide a delegate. Please make this contact promptly, so they have time to find a delegate.

If you cannot find a delegate by 20th December 2014 from either of the WIs, please contact Liz Anderson so that a proxy can be found for you and the other WI you are representing.

CRAFT AND HABERDASHERY STALL

Very many thanks to all who generously made and donated such beautiful items of craft for sale at the Royal Cornwall Show. We did a brisk trade and the sales made a valuable

contribution to the costs of being at the Show. It really showed off the talents of our members. Those items unsold were taken to the Stithians Show where they made a strong impression on the visitors to our marquee and raised further funds. Our thanks also to those members who turned out their cupboards and donated all sorts of pieces of fabric which we were able to sell to quilters and others looking for ‘bits’.Just a reminder that at Chy Noweth we have a great Craft Library with lots of patterns, sewing, knitting and crochet and some adorable soft toys!

CORNWALL AT DENMAN

Monday 16th – Thursday 19th November 2015

Our dates for the next Federation visit have now been confirmed.Even though this might seem a long way off, we are hoping to choose the courses to offer you very soon. This will also give you time to start saving.

Our last Federation visit in 2013 was extremely enjoyable and it was a great way to meet other people from the County as well as visiting a very special place. For those of you who have never been to Denman, it really is a fantastic experience and one you will want to repeat again and again. It is also a great opportunity to develop a skill or to learn a new one.

As Travel Organiser may I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the lovely ladies, and their gentlemen friends, who travelled with us on our various trips this year. One of the highlights has to be the ride on the Seaton Tramway

for late April, early May.• In June a trip to Rosemooris planned, when their lovely rose garden should be at its best. This will, of course, be after we have recovered from the Royal Cornwall Show.• ‘The Round Robin’ trip isanother wonderful day out, and includes a steam train ride from Paignton to Kingswear, a ferry trip across the river to Dartmouth, free time there then a leisurely cruise up the Dart to Totnes. This is a possible idea for July.

• As we come to the end of summer,a trip to Clovelly is planned, with some retail therapy at the Atlantic Shopping Village on the way.

So, if you like gallivanting, watch for details of these trips in your County News in the coming months. We will always be pleased to welcome you, your family and friends on our trips. We are also happy to receive your ideas for future events.

and the Donkey Sanctuary trip!I am putting together a programme of places to go next year, some of which have been suggested by you when we have asked for your ideas.• This year saw the innovation of‘The Big Cake Show’ at Westpoint. It is on again next year from the 20th-22nd March, and I am hoping to get tickets and organise a coach for one of the days.• The Rembrandt ’selfie’ is ondisplay at Buckland Abbey, so a trip there is planned

BUDE WI SINGING FOR FUN

Saturday July 16th saw the first public performance of the Bude WI ‘Singing for Fun’ Group. This was held at St Martins United Reform Church in Bude and commemorated the start of WW1 in August 1914. All the ladies wore a handmade poppy, made by two members of group. The Church was decorated with Union Flags which created an evocativeatmosphere as the singers sang songs from WW1 and WW2. Members also gave readings and read poems. They finished with rousing choruses of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem. After the concert, supper was served in the Church Hall and the singers and guests enjoyed a light snack and delicious cakes.

The singers, who have only been meeting for approximately nine months and number just over 20, are always happy to welcome ladies who enjoy singing to join them.

They meet on the first and third Monday evening at St Martins and the next meeting is on September 15th. A well-earned break is to be taken during August.

Thanks were expressed by the WI President, Carol Sparham, to Mr Andrew Pitt, conductor and leader, and Mr Roy McKenzie, accompanist. Thanks are also extended to the members of St Martins Church and all the WI members who helped behind the scenes.

CONSTANTINE WI IN FLOWER FESTIVAL

In July, the church in Constantine held a flower festival. All the organisations of the village, together with choirs and singers were allocated different parts of the church to decorate with flowers and accessories. Our WI was allocated the middle window, a good position apart from, dare I say it, the glorious sunshine. This meant that the display was in bright sunshine making it difficult to

keep the flowers looking fresh and photography difficult.

The festival was opened by Sarah Newton MP and on all days there was music and singing. All the money raised from theevent will be shared with the church and Cornwall Hospice Care.

The flower arrangement was put together by Angela Stokes, ‘Inspiring Women’ tall vase, with Sylvia Dunstan, pressing and repairing the banner. Helen Rogers and Janet Green were responsible for WI letters and acted as general dog’s bodies.

We all agreed that we had thoroughly enjoyed the effort it had taken to get the window decorated and we had a few laughs along the way.
