Headlines Our lovely Y7 are ready for their first big
Sandringham adventure as they head off to the Peak District next week. This is one of our most long-running and established events that thousands before have enjoyed. It may well be that some of our parents as past students of the school also remember this trip. We will be taking 241 of them; half going from Monday to Wednesday and the second half going Wednesday to Friday. I will be joining the second half and look forward to getting to know our Y7 a little better. Watch our school Twitter feed for regular updates and we will also try to load things to the school web-site. This is dependent on connectivity at the Youth Hostel which can be variable. I am sure there will be many write-ups after the event and pictures for you to enjoy.
I would like to thank Fo$S, our school PTA, for
organising the Y7 ‘Sausage Sizzle’ last Friday evening. With over 500 people (including children) present, it was a fantastic evening and great to meet our new families. Fo$S have a busy calendar of events for you to enjoy throughout the year so watch the Sandprint for regular updates. They also have a very lively committee who are always looking for new members willing to give up a little time for their school. So, if you are interested please contact Julia Shaw at the school who can let you know how to proceed.
You may have seen some press articles from the
Welwyn area about our work with Sir Frederic Osborn School. This is a school with tremendous potential and as a National Support School we have had the privilege of working with them now for over three years. We have been working with the Local Authority over a new way of moving forward which is to sponsor Sir Frederic Osborn and convert it to a brand new academy from September 2018. The name will be The Ridgeway Academy and will form part of our Multi-Academy Trust. This is a really exciting time for the families and staff at Sir Frederic Osborn School and will provide the opportunity to establish a school that will be able to move to Outstanding provision in the near future. For Sandringham, our job will be to continue to improve performance here whilst supporting the new academy as it finds its feet and journey to success. Watch this space!

Sandringham Open Mornings Our annual Open Evening takes place each July.
However, in the Autumn we strongly encourage families to look around the school during a normal day. This is where you can see the school in action and really understand our ethos and culture.
We have now have days where you can reserve a
tour:
Monday 2nd October (9.00 – 10.45 a.m.)
Tuesday 3rd October (9.00 – 10.45 a.m.)
Please contact Cathryn Russell on main reception to book one of these dates and then simply turn up and we will look after you. If you have not been to the school before we will provide you with our school prospectus and information pack.
Students will show you around and then there will be an opportunity to discuss the school and admissions with the Headteacher and other senior staff. We think you will find this very useful in the process of selecting a secondary school.
If you are unable to make any of the above dates don’t worry, simply contact Cathryn and she will try to accommodate you at an alternative time.
Car Safety Last week I highlighted the importance of
sensible parking when taking and picking up students from the school.
We have now received a complaint from a resident
in Malvern Close, off Chiltern Road. It had been noted that Sandringham students are being picked up from school at Malvern Close car park (these are the flats next to the school). The students are also using the entrance doors to the flats as a cut through to the car park to be picked up.
Please note that this is private property and
furthermore several parents cars have been blocking the entry and exit into Malvern Close meaning that residents cannot access and exit their road. We would appreciate your consideration in this matter.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation Martin Petersen Campus Manager

French Exchange 2017 Last Wednesday, 26 Sandringham students
travelled to the beautiful region of Annecy in The Alps for the return visit of the annual French exchange. The exchange is now in its fifth year and forms part of a two leg process between our school and the Jean Monnet Collège, St Jorioz. Students spent six days living with French families and participating in a variety of visits organised by our host school.
Students spent time in Annecy itself and also
enjoyed a cruise along the lake reputed to be the cleanest in Europe. The science department will be pleased to know we also visited CERN in Switzerland!. Students learnt about instruments used at CERN which help us to understand our universe. We spoke with scientists from China, Spain, Italy and France who were all very enthusiastic about particle physics. It was truly fascinating! In addition to excursions, students attended lessons, ate in the canteen and experienced daily school life in France.
There was a wonderful atmosphere between the
Sandringham students and their partners. All our young people behaved superbly even when things didn’t go according to plan. They embraced a different culture and were confident in their communication with our hosts. It is clear that some long lasting friendships have been formed. Well done to all involved and thank you to Ms Hewitt, Mrs Flahive and Mr Swann for giving up their time to look after students and support this project. Vive l’échange!!

French Exchange 2017—A Student’s Perspective
The day of the French Exchange and I was so excited
about meeting my French exchange partner (Jean-Denis), I was frantically packing the presents, my clothes, the money (most importantly) and my breakfast since I had to wake up at 3 o’clock in the morning. I could barely walk let alone get up. The things that kept going through my mind was meeting Jean-Denis, Will it be awkward?, Does he have a big house?, a PS4? Does he have good games? Is he rich?...
When I got to Luton Airport, it was freezing at 4 in
the morning but I managed to cope in the end. I was the first one so I had to wait the longest. I always found that the security was annoying but it is always needed I guess. We got on the plane at last to Geneva and when we landed, many of us were so happy because we could finally say that we have been to Switzerland.
When we got on the coach we were all still pretty
shattered and some of us even went to sleep! Jean’s school wasn’t as big as Sandringham but it did have some cool stuff that we don’t have. For example, their school bell is better, their school has more security, everyone has their own padlock, they have a building specifically for children to have fun while waiting to be picked up or whilst waiting for the bus.
When we went in I was so surprised on how clean the
school was – there was not a spec of rubbish anywhere! It was if it was just built. In the main hall, I was anxiously waiting for JD’s arrival and as I was, I saw friend’s ones and they were so happy to see them. It was then clear to me that I wasn’t the only one who was excited. Finally I saw him he was just as I remembered when he came

to me but this time I am less nervous. He had gotten braces (which was really cool).
When I finally got to his house, or should I say
mansion, (it was huge by the way), I unpacked and we went for a bit of a walk around Annecy, we went to a restaurant/bar and I tried this new dish called Duo et torture. It was a raw kind of steak with cheese and ham on top of it. It was so nice. We also walked around the lake. It’s an amazing view, I took pictures of it. The lake is pretty clean but wasn’t recommend for anyone who wants to go to drink it. We came back at around 6:00 and we had potatoes with cheese and smoked bacon for dinner. It was quite simple but very nice as well.
The next day, Thursday, we walked to his school
where we had maths in French. Clearly it was new to me and quite hard, but when you can understand what the teacher is saying then you will find it easier. Afterwards we went to the outskirts of CERN in France/Switzerland and we tried to learn about the geography of it since there were posters around the area. Unfortunately, it rained that day so we had to go back to school and had a lesson in physics playing with light. We found out that people who deal with stage lights have only three colours to use: red, blue, green. Afterwards we went home and played Over watch on the PS4. Yes!
Friday was the big day to go to CERN and luckily we
went down it not the actual one because it wasn’t the time of year to go down there so they talked about how the Large Hadron Collider worked, the questions it would solve and the inventions it started. Then after three hours we went back to the school to get picked up by our exchanges.
At the weekend I went to Chamonix where I bought
my family gifts and went to a self-controlled roller coaster it was really fun!
On Monday, we went around Annecy to explore. It
was interesting but I had already seen everything with JD. On Tuesday it was our final day and we were to spend most of it at school with maths and French. After these lessons we went to the 1992 Olympics museum and it was great because I had a badge for it too! On our return it was time to say our goodbyes. Some of us tried to hold back our tears but failed. And before we knew it we were back in England and dreading coming back to school!
The exchange was a really fun experience. Some
might say it’s challenging and awkward but the advice I would give is if you just enjoy yourself and speak as much French as you can you will get the most out of the exchange and even stay friends with them for the rest of your life. I have kept in touch with JD. I loved it and I hope that the future students who are doing it have as much fun as I did.

The Unknown Soldier Wednesday 27th September 7:30pm Adults £10
Con £8 Jack stayed on when the guns fell silent, to search
the battlefields for the boys that could not go home - for the dead and the missing, for both enemy and friend – and amongst the rusty wire and unexploded bombs Jack is looking for something – looking for someone. He has a promise to keep and a debt to repay, and now there is this strange request from the generals.
The Unknown Soldier is a moving, often humor-
ous, but above all thought provoking new theatre piece by the award nominated writer Ross Ericson, for Grist to the Mill Productions. It looks at the First World War from a new perspective, through the eyes of a man who has survived the carnage but who finds it hard to return home. It is a story of betrayal, of the deep friendship that can only be found between those who fight and die together, and of a world that has changed for ever.

Antigone Monday 2nd October 7:30pm Adults £12 Con £8
A battle-ground and bloodshed between brothers. A
double fratricide. A proclamation that one brother should
remain unburied, left to decay on the fields for carrion to ravage.
A loyal sister, Antigone, defiant of the State, buries him. Creon, her uncle, is determined to uphold the Law and punish those who disobey at whatever cost. Family loyalties and personal politics collide in this most passionate and timeless of ancient Greek tragedies. Needless to say it gets bloody.
Actors of Dionysus’ radical new adaptation of
Sophocles’ masterpiece is set in a dystopian, post-truth age where birds are drones and someone is always listening. But in a world more akin to Black Mirror than Ancient Greece, the age-old themes prevail and one girl’s battle against the state lives on...

PE News Congratulations to the students who have been
selected to represent St. Albans and Harpenden District Football teams; Jack De Groot, Jake Clarke, Kieran Gauthier, Callum Bennett, Ben Kirby and Jude James.
Well done to the Cross Country team who
represented the school last week in the first District League match at Townsend. The races were a high standard and the highlight of the finishers was Alex Hughes in the Senior Boys race finishing 4th. This week the students will have run at STAGS in the second round of the league and hopefully there are equally as many excellent performances to share.
Both the 1st XI and 1st XV were in action on
Wednesday afternoon. The 1st XV were at home in a friendly V Simon Balle school from Hertford, which saw the return of Mr Coy to the school field. The team was an experimental side with new players given an opportunity and a number away on the Geography field trip. It was an exciting game with action at both ends of the pitch. Tries from Seas Ahearne-Smith and Rory Hextall were enough in the end to put some daylight between us and the visitors. The 1st XI were away to St. Albans School and a good start didn’t result in a goal and with a 2-0 deficit to overcome at half time, the uphill battle proved too much. A consolation goal from Callan Deradour wasn’t enough to prevent the capitulation that ensued.
The Y8 girls played their first County League game
at home V Chauncey on Wednesday. There was some superb netball played from both teams, however Chauncey eventually came out 25-16 winners with Molly Charnock & Margot Koppe receiving the player of the match award.
