If you are on two, four, or three wheels, Dashboards and

Saddlebags Magazine will let you know of great destinations all year. Our destinations are close to home, usually within 200 miles so you don’t have to burn yourself out racing home for work on Monday.

We are building relationships with tourism agencies all over the state so that we can tell you about smaller, more unique events that reflect the flavor and/or the culture of communities all around us. Many of these communities do not have the resources to market in large statewide publications or broadcast media. Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine is the cost effective marketing tool for communities, towns and counties to let you know about the fantastic destinations you have been missing!

‘The Hunger Games’ 4-Day ItineraryPart TwoDays one and two are published in the June issue of Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine. If you missed it you can catch it on line at DashboardsandSaddlebags.com

Ready to exper ience “The Hunger Games”? You’ve come

to the right place. The road to Panem starts and ends in North Carolina, where the eagerly awaited movie was shot.

This four-day itinerary, which loops from Charlotte to Asheville and back, leads to film locations, choice star hangouts and sites that connect to elements of the Suzanne Collins novel. It also notes training options to learn skills a Tribute could use.

Day 1-Imagine you’re Effie, leav-ing the decadence of the Capitol (Charlotte), dropping by District 12 (Hildebran), then landing in a fun-loving place that makes film stars feel at home (Asheville).

Day 2 -Having eaten as well as the Tributes during training, prepare to enter the Arena (DuPont State Recreational Forest between Brevard and Hendersonville).

Day 3 -Journey from the heart of District 12 (Shelby) to the belly of the Capitol (Charlotte) and sense the atmospheric change from small-town warmth to urban cool.

Day 4 -Explore the Capi to l (Charlotte), which turns out to be Haymitch’s kind of place.

DAY 3About 80 miles east of Brevard, the

unassuming town of Shelby might boast the world’s highest concentra-tion of “Hunger Games” readers. The Reaping and Hob scenes were filmed in private warehouse space near the heart of town. If you have trouble picking out the buildings used in the film, or if you want to know where the paparazzi perched, ask somebody on Lafayette Street as you shop for Hob-worthy items

— just as the crew did. And you never know what you might find at Celebrity Consignment Boutique, which is owned by the late Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law. For lunch, try NiFen Wine and Tapas, which scored with the cast.

Allow 50 minutes for the drive to Charlotte plus time to check in at your lodging (several of the stars stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, Char-lotte, crew members at Dunhill Hotel).

Rural Hill Food Truck RallyHistoric Rural Hill is proud to

announce the RURAL HILL FOOD TRUCK RALLY to be held Friday, July 27 from 5 – 9pm, the first-ever Food Truck Rally in the Lake Norman area! All ages are invited to attend and check out the great food that can be found in our local food trucks. Admission to the Rally is free, but food pricing will vary per truck menu. The Rural Hill Food Truck Rally will feature live music, corn hole, local merchants, children’s activities, and living history experiences. Complete event information can be found at www.ruralhill.net.

From New York through Florida, Food Truck Rallies are sweeping the nation. Rural Hill Executive Director Jeff Fissel said of the new event, “We are proud to host this Rally for the Lake Norman area. We have a great venue for festivals and events like this one, and we are excited to offer a Food Truck Rally experience for our community.”

Long known in New York City, Los Angeles and other large cities, Food Trucks are on the rise. Michelle Boudin of Charlotte Magazine recently wrote that “some of the Queen City’s tastiest dishes are being served from the side of parked vehicles. These chefs of the road are updating Twitter feeds and websites to share where you can find their roving kitchens which offer inexpensive – and often gourmet – food.”

Locating the roving kitchens is so popular that The Charlotte Observer recently launched its interactive “Food Truck Tracker” map. Observer restaurant writer Helen Schwab wrote, “As the food truck scene continues to grow, we wanted a way to let readers know more about them and where they’ll be. Each week, food truck operators will share their information with the Observer, and we’ll create a Google map that shows where those trucks plan to be, when they plan to be there, what they’ll be serving, and other details. There’s a drop-down menu that you’ll use to choose the day you seek, and you’ll click on the pins to get additional information about particular places.”

For more than 250 years in history… Rural Hill is located at 4431 Neck Road (off Beatties Ford Road) in Huntersville, 28078. The former homestead of

DashboardsandSaddlebags.com 704-706-2365 15

Major John and Violet Davidson, the 265 acre site is maintained and promoted by Rural Hill and features annual events such as the Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games, the Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze and the Rural Hill Sheep Dog Trials. Rural Hill Inc. is a non-profit organization supported through membership and donations, and with proceeds from its events utilized for the preservation of historic Rural Hill and its education efforts. A Multicultural Event!Come celebrate our diversity

Saturday, July 21, at 7pm at Market Square in downtown Reidsville. As part of the summer concert series this month, Market Square welcomes three different types of artists from diverse backgrounds.

Taking the stage at 7pm. will be the Suah African Dance Theatre based out of Greensboro and led by Wesley Williams. Suah African dance combines traditional West African dance with modern dance, contemporary dance and break dance, to name a few. Williams started dancing in high school and reverted to it throughout his athletic career to stay in shape as he saw many similarities between dance and sports. He formed a student organization centered on dance and received an opportunity to dance with Durham’s acclaimed African-American Dance Ensemble, founded by Chuck Davis. Williams trained with Chuck Davis and was a member of the African-American Dance Ensemble based in Durham, touring with the group in West Africa and Asia.

Gracing the stage around 8pm will be belly dancing performed by Troupe Bellysima.

Troupe Bellysima began as an inspiration of Diane “Daliana” Simons, creative director and choreographer, in 2003. They are proud to serve the community with professional belly dance per-formances drawing on both the influence of the Middle East and

the modern evolution of the dance. Troupe Bellysima seeks to inform and educate the community about the history and culture of this beautiful exciting art form.

Rounding out the event will be Mariachi Mexico 2000. Formed in Greensboro, NC, in 1995 by Hugo R. Avila. The group started with four players, which is the basic number of players in a Mariachi Band. It includes the basics -- vihuela, the small Mexican guitar, base guitar, violin and trumpet.

The concert is free and open to the public. The Beer and Wine Garden will be open. Please no coolers, pets or food allowed. Remember your chair! For more information contact 336-349-1099 or visit our website at www.ci.reidsville.nc.us.

Film Junkies Guide to North CarolinaCleveland County LocationsEarl Owensby Studios1 Motion Picture Boulevard Shelby (704-487-0500, www.earlowenshy.com). The studios are not open to the public.

Some argue that Earl Owensby and his self-described “billy-

flicks” of the ‘70s and ‘80s founded filmmaking in North Carolina. True or not, this maverick is a legend in the state’s movie annals. He did things his way. Owensby was old-fashioned in his efficient, almost family-like approach, yet he was also innovative in realizing the profitability of American action movies in the overseas market. Not familiar with Challenge? Never heard of Chain Gang? Didn’t catch Rottweiler? You’re probably in the majority. But these hard-hitting titles were among the dozen or so features Owensby produced, directed, and often starred in from the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s. In a bottom-line business, every one of them made money, often reaping a tenfold return on investment. And you probably have heard of James Cameron, whose taut 1989 underwater thriller The Abyss shot at Owensby’s South Carolina studio, converted from an unfin-ished nuclear power plant with a 7.5-million-gallon tank.

Earl Owensby Studios, outside Shelby, is a state-of-the-art 67-acre complex with eight sound stages, editing suites, screening rooms, and a 100,000-gallon film tank

featuring underwater camera bays.

Owensby’s story has been told in GQ, on “60 Minutes” (twice!), on

“Late Night with David Letterman,” and in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times, among other places. A native of nearby Cliffside, North Carolina, Earl got fixated on films as a kid ushering at the Cliffside Theater. In fact, his admiration for John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima inspired him to join the Marines. After five years in the Corps, he returned to North Carolina and founded a number of successful companies, primarily in the industrial supply business. In 1973, he produced and starred in his first feature film, Challenge He poured the profits into the construction of his film studios, which grew into the largest inde-pendent facility outside Hollywood. Over three dozen feature films and television and cable productions

followed, featuring such stars as George Kennedy, Raul Julia, and Parker Stevenson. Owensby’s acqui-sition of the uncompleted nuclear power plant in South Carolina led to his development of the world’s largest underwater film tank. This attracted Cameron and no doubt contributed to The Abyss’s Academy Award® for visual effects.

The studios’ other Oscar® connec-tions include Tom Conti’s nomina-tion for Best Actor in Reuben, Reuben, and the Best Documentary Short Subject award won by The Johnstown Flood

If you’re anything like the actors, you’ll be drawn to the lively NoDa — as in North Davidson Street — neighborhood. Follow their example with dinner at Cabo Fish Taco or Boudreaux’s Louisiana Kitchen, and top off the night at Amélie’s French Bakery, where Woody Harrelson joined regulars for a round of chess.

DAY 4Caesar Flickerman would thrill to Uptown Charlotte’s modern architecture and urban sheen. Yet even in the shadow of corporate towers and art-filled plazas, the Capitol’s flamboyant fashionistas drew gapes as costumed extras entered Knight Theater for filming. The theater, Charlotte Convention Center and other venues might not be routinely accessed, but depending on events, you might get inside. Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame, where it will dawn on you that hovercraft have the same kind of seats as racecars, and hit the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton to see the sculpted chocolate mascot outside the Panemesque Bar Cocoa.

The featured attraction on today’s itinerary is the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Imagine the Gamemakers creating the world’s largest whitewater river, a canyon to cross and a 46-foot rock to climb. Tributes could actually train here — the center offers extensive skills and survival classes. On a visit to ascend the wall, Woody Harrelson offered a glimpse of Haymitch’s capabilities in the Arena. Refresh and renourish at the River’s Edge Bar & Grill.
