fresh talk
Welcome to another issue of fresh and it’s full of wedding ideas.
Firstly we bring you Neil Whittaker who impressed
Australian florists when he toured here in 2007.
He gets us in the mood on page 3 with a wedding
proposal then his other designs can be located on
pages 14 and 15. Neil belongs to an elite group of
UK designers who have stood the test of time.
He definitely hasn’t run out of steam after thirty
years in the business and continues to push the
boundaries of design and technique. Being a natural
competitor makes Neil ambitious and focused when
he constantly challenges himself to produce truly
individual designs with impeccable style. His influence is evident everywhere in
the UK and he’s heavily sought after for professional floral demonstrations and
workshops like the ones we experienced here.
Neil has won numerous awards and when he isn’t jetting around the world he’s
happily working at The Design Element in Irlam, Manchester with his partner.
There they cater for a wide range of customers requesting signature designs or
weekly sympathy flowers and nothing is too small for
their specialist care.
David Denyer is similarly well known in the UK where
he has won five gold medals in competitions at the
RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
He is the lead designer
at Lansdowne Florist,
Bournemouth frequently giving
workshops, demonstrations
and consultancies. David’s
sense of fun and creative
signature designs wow
audiences so we hope that
you are similarly impressed with his work.
Unique collars surround his bouquets and some have
even been tapped with a magic wand. David uses our
brand new topiary stands to complete the wedding
sequence and demonstrates their suitability for
receptions. Narrow stems adorned with trailing Ivy and Morning Dew Drop lead to
a profusion of the latest bridal colours so see them in action on pages 16 and 17.
Don’t forget to catch up
with the latest Designz®
Cup winners on pages
10-13.

ProposalTHE
Set the wedding wheels in motion by surrounding a diamond ring with seductive petals.
Who could refuse? The design is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any other occasion that demands
a proposal and the Carmen Rose effect provides a perfect cushion for the ring. Diamond Pins will
keep the Rose petals secure while a coating of Waxflower over the rest of the floral
foam gives contrast. Insert Heart Shaped
Pins throughout for a final
flourish of romance.

It’s not obligatory for every
groomsman or usher to have the
same buttonhole.
In fact it shows imagination to have similar
flowers made into bespoke buttonholes for the
gentlemen at a wedding.
Individuality is the name of the game and
shown here are three gents’
buttonholes to put the wow back
into wearable designs.
There is profit in
buttonholes but particularly
when they can be constructed

David Denyer knows that unique bouquets require special sales skills.
Often brides are stuck in the
concept of the round Rose
style that they see in glossy
magazines so David gives
them other options. They
naturally want a bouquet to
complement their dress but
it should also stand the test
of time in photographs.
Showing examples of your own
bouquets is essential and the
best way is a professional portfolio
of bridal designs. Here David takes
the posy concept then wraps it in a
blushing stand up collar that accentuates
the ethereal beauty of the soft, white
flowers.
The bouquet is made on an OASIS® Grand
Lady with dancing Morning Dew Drops that
will gently move as the bride glides down the
aisle.

PastelsPowerful Soft seductive shades of pale are set to be the trend for
brides this year.
Here is a new take on the Rose posy using
creamy, pastel shades that put originality back
into the design. A beaded collar emphasizes
the beauty of the flowers that have been
inserted into an OASIS® Grande Straight
Handle. This bouquet holder has a slender
handle along with enough floral foam to keep
flowers looking fresh all day long.

BridesOnly the best for
Nothing beats a classic shower bouquet for elegance and style.
Add a twist of modern design plus the glimmer of cascading
Beads and it’s a bouquet made in heaven. Showing off your
floristry skills is essential and brides will expect to pay more
for quality and premier styling. Here’s how to make it.
Step 1
Soak the OASIS® Grande Straight
Handle Bouquet Holder in water
then drain any excess away. Start
by making the trail with the longest
flowers. Remove any lower flowers on
the Dendrobium stems and then make
a sharp clean diagonal cut at the
stem end. Push the stems firmly into the floral foam.
Step 2
Continue at the back and sides of the
bouquet holder to make the outline
with Fatsia leaves, Dendrobium buds
and Umbrella Fern. Use the whole
expanse of floral foam to ensure the
bouquet has a rounded profile. It’s
very important for security that the
stems are clean and cut diagonally for maximum anchorage
particularly around the perimeter of the bouquet. Place folded
Aspidistra leaves plus three Anthuriums into the centre of the
floral foam to start constructing the focal area.
Step 3
Tuck ‘Avalanche’ Roses into the
centre of the bouquet, again
pushing the stems firmly into the
floral foam. Note how the widest
part of the bouquet is at the focal
area. Add groups of Bouvardia
and then thread Beads and
Stephanotis onto Steel Grass to overlay the bouquet. Loop
the Steel Grass so that it criss-crosses the flowers to create
a domed layer. Once all the floral foam is concealed finish
the back of the bouquet holder with large leaves. Spray with
OASIS® Floralife® Finishing Touch for added longevity.

MagicalIt’s
Bridesmaids can only cast a lucky spell if they have a wand.
Wands are back in fashion and most of the construction can be made ahead of time using a
variety of OASIS® floral products. Flowers can be added on the day of the wedding and you don’t
have to be a wizard to follow our step-by-step guide to making this perfect bridesmaid design.
Aluminium Wire Beads Metallic Wire
OASIS® Floral Adhesive Parafilm
Step 1
Shape six leaf outlines with Aluminium
wire at the top of a long length of wire
that will form the handle. Bend the wire
leaves back into a horizontal position.
Place the wire leaves together to make a
posy shape.
Step 2
Use Metallic Wire to pinch and wire
together two locally available Bleached
Leaves that have been sprayed a colour
that will complement the bridesmaid’s
dress. Make about ten of these Leaf
groups. Place these around the edge
and centre of the wire leaves. Cover the
stems with Parafilm, pad out with wool
then add a topping of Metallic Wire.
Step 3
Add a small amount of glue to the
flower stems. Leave the glue for a few
minutes to go tacky and then tuck the
flowers into place between the Bleached
Leaves. Thread ivory Beads onto wool
and attach to the handle of the wand
then spray everything with glitter for a
stardust effect.

Left: Adriana Nati
depicted dancers in
her Strictly Ballroom
design. Phalaenopsis
orchids were a focal
point for the surrounding
movement in Calla lilies,
hanging Amaranthus,
bronze Anthurium and
Cordyline leaves. Fabric fell
dramatically through the
separate tiers like a cloak
from the Spanish dance of
the Paso Doble.
“It’s very rewarding being
part of the process that
combines creativity
and flowers into an end
result that gives so much
pleasure,” said Adriana.
Bottom left: Finding Nemo
captivated Jessica Southers
so she included glass baubles
along with a fishing line in her
design. Carnations, Orchids,
Oyster Shells and Lipstick
Berry have been selected in
shades of pink, purple and
green for a harmonious result.
✴
Left: The cycle of love was portrayed by Hisae Samuels in her
version of The Piano. The initial seed was visible in the Barley which
then blossomed into flowers. Driftwood and Seaweed symbolised
the sea journey undertaken by a woman and her piano.
Bronze net lightly covered with fine strands of glue created a
keyboard and also highlighted the flowing effect of Calla lilies,
Dancing Ladies and Barley. Brown colours graduated into yellow
then white to express pureness of feeling. “I enjoy being able to
create designs that spring from my emotions, feelings and life,” said Hisae.
Priscilla popped out of the desert and
down to Sydney for the Designz® Cup.
She was a popular choice amongst entrants when
Alan Randell-Smith and David Berger judged the

Anastasia Chartorisky has watched Priscilla Queen
of the Desert many times. She was inspired by the
spectacular costumes and especially those worn
during the desert performance for a local tribe. This
led to a headdress which is similarly unforgettable.
Fishbone fern weaves its
way through a profusion of
Roses, Gerbera, Asters and
Sweet William which keeps
the eye busy while Triple Head
Pearl Pins give glamour. The
OASIS® Designer Sheet was
perfect for the polka dots
on the dress and meant that
Anastasia could fill each dot
with a floral design. Aluminium
Wire kept them secure on
the mannequin with more
pins being used for further
decoration.
“The design I created for the
Designz® Cup shows just
how creative you can be with
flowers. People get to see the
fun side of floristry and that it
isn’t just about gift bunches or
mini boxes.”
“I love floristry as
it makes many people happy and
you can show your creative
side,” said Anastasia
Chartorisky.

Left: Isobel Neild was influenced by the
strength and hardship that Ned Kelly’s
helmet represents. This iconic image was
strategically placed. Several species of
Leucadendron and Banksia captured the
resilient landscape in the film based on
our Australian legend and starring Heath
Ledger.
Most of the flowers were placed into
a parallel design to reflect the vertical
palings of the fence that Isobel made
from scraps of wood. Soft unstructured
strands of Fountain Grass created
contrast and helped to make the design more
eye-catching. “I love the joy that flowers bring
to people and the endless possibilities of what
can be made using a little bit of creativity along
with what nature has already provided for you,”
said Isobel.
Right: It’s clear which Australian movie took Jessica
Howie’s fancy. The comedy in Kenny came through her
design when she fitted an OASIS® Wreath into a toilet
because its cardboard base and pop-out centre moulded
the bowl perfectly.
Jessica filled it with an explosion of yellow Roses while
more of them have been inserted into an OASIS® bouquet
holder to create a whimsical plunger. A puddle of petals and
bucket of cleaning products completed the design. “As this
was my first competition I wanted to have fun and hoped
people would share my sense of humour. I was happy
to hear people have a chuckle at my design during the
competition,” said Jessica.
“I enjoy being creative and seeing the joy that flowers bring
to all occasions. I am also enjoying learning this industry
which is new to me and it’s very exciting being on my way
to a new career.”

A pelican named Mr Percival
took out First Prize in
Brisbane.
He was impressive when he first
appeared in the Australian film Storm
Boy but also had an effect on Alan

The close bond between a child named
Storm Boy and Mr Percival has remained
with Rebecca Kerdel since she studied
the story in primary school. She enjoys
how the Australian coastal imagery is
so strong and raw in a film that conveys
such valuable lessons to the audience.
Use of and respect for the natural
environment reverberates throughout.
It encouraged Rebecca to honour the
shapes and forms that may be found in
all flowers and foliage by constructing
a diagonal design. Her layers created
depth. Real feathers in white, black and
grey accentuated the feathery feel of
Silver Leucadendrons, white Heath and
black Sedge.
Rebecca’s choice of native grasses
complements the Orchids and Old Man’s
Beard that may be found growing in the
Coorong where the film was set. Her
wooden pallets signified the ‘knocked-
together’ home where Storm Boy
lived and the pelican’s
head was fashioned out
of floral wire and wool.
OASIS® Floral Foam
supports the design
which was set into a tray
bound by OASIS® Jute
and covered with sand.
“I enjoy Floristry because it combines my two most favourite things: art and nature. I’ve always
appreciated elements such as colour, texture and line so being able to discover these within flowers and foliage is
amazing.
I love that I can work alongside nature and also push it to create beautiful
designs,” said Rebecca Kerdel.

How to make:
14
Step 1
Cover the box
with black
paper making
neat envelope
ends and
sealing with
OASIS® Floral Adhesive. Make a neat band
using a locally available non-woven wrap
and glue down the centre length of the box.
Place dark red cord lengthwise and then
across the width, one-third from the end of
the box. Fasten into position.
Step 2
Wet the
OASIS® Mini
Deco then
push it firmly
onto the
box and if
necessary for added security use OASIS®
Floral Adhesive. Cut small squares of non-
woven wrap and pinch them together to
form rosettes. Make seven of them using
green lacquered wire at the base to secure
each one.
Step 3
Add the rosettes
to form a frill
around the bottom
of the OASIS®
Mini Deco. Insert
trails of Hedera
into the floral foam to form an elongated shape
and cover any exposed floral foam with Hedera
leaves. Take Aluminium Wire and make three
swirls to encircle the design. Place one special
Rose into the centre. Cut the hearts from the
pins and glue one to the centre of the Rose then
decorate the box as desired with the remaining
heart shaped pins.

A dramatic floral statement should
await the guests at a wedding
reception. Often one large
arrangement has greater impact
and is more cost effective than
several small designs.
This design is made on the new versatile Topiary
Stand from Smithers-Oasis Australia Pty Ltd. It
rises above any table conversation leaving plenty of
space for the glasses of champagne below. Everyone
will enjoy a full view of the bridal party along with the floral
coated spheres that hover above their heads.
However topiaries like these deserve wider audiences and
exposure. While brides prepare for their weddings other girls are
getting ready for even bigger crowds. Four-legged super models will
look spectacular throughout the Spring racing carnival so why not
test out a stand in your favourite marquee. It won’t block the view.
