Rolls-Royce is cutting 4,600 jobs over the next two years - most of them in the UK - amid a further restructur-ing drive to save £400m a year and simplify the business.
Following the an-nouncement in January that the engine OEM would simplify the Group into three cus-tomer-focused business units, this proposed re-structuring, according to Rolls-Royce will create smaller and more cost effective corporate and support functions and reduce management layers and complex-ity, including within engineering. It follows a comprehensive review of the structure, culture, processes
and people with a view to creating a much simpler, healthier and dy-namic organisation with clearer ac-countabilities, greater productivity and quicker decision-making, the company hopes.
Over the next 24 months, Rolls -Royce expects that the proposed restructuring will lead to the re-duction of around 4,600 roles, pre-dominantly in the UK where most of corporate and support functions are based. Around a third of these roles
are expected to leave by the end of 2018. The programme is expected to gain further momentum through 2019, with full implementation of headcount reductions and structural changes by mid-2020.
Chief Executive Warren East said: “Our world-leading technology gives Rolls-Royce the potential to generate significant profitable growth. The creation
of a more streamlined organisation with pace and simplicity at its heart will enable us to deliver on that promise, generating higher returns while being able to invest for the future.

Canada Jetlines has partnered with AerCap, a global leader in aircraft leasing and aviation fi-nance, and has signed a Definitive Lease Agree-ment for two Airbus A320 aircraft, effective June 12, 2018. Delivery of the two aircraft is expected by the first half of 2019. The two committed Airbus A320’s are sister aircraft, having virtu-ally identical conformity in design, features, and equipment, allowing Jetlines to expedite the necessary training and maintenance processes
to commence operations at an earlier date. The sister aircraft are 12 years old. The pre-ex-isting purchase agreement with Boeing for the 737-MAX’s for delivery in 2023 remains in place. Jetlines plans to use the Airbus planes to support its start-up operations and is not limited from se-curing a Boeing fleet in future, should the com-pany decide to do so.

“We have made progress in improving our day-to-day operations and strengthening our leadership and are now turning to reduce the complexity that often slows us down and leads to duplication of effort. It is never an easy deci-sion to reduce our workforce, but we must cre-ate a commercial organisation that is as world-leading as our technologies. To do this we are fundamentally changing how we work.
“These changes will help us deliver over the mid and longer-term a level of free cash flow well beyond our near-term ambition of around £1bn by around 2020. After a decade of sig-nificant investment, we are committed to de-livering improved returns while continuing to invest in the innovation needed to realise our long-term aspiration to be the world’s leading industrial technology company.”
Its believed that in its current state, the com-pany has become bloated and inefficient. Most of the cut backs will come from middle man-agement and back-office functions. Reportedly, engineering jobs will be protected for the next few years.
Analysts believe it will be crucial for Rolls-Royce not to cut too far to fast.

Etihad reduces losses in 2017
Etihad Airways has confirmed that it improved its core operating performance by 22% in 2017, despite facing challenges including significant fuel cost increases, the entry into administra-tion of its equity partners Alitalia and airberlin, and initial investment in a comprehensive busi-ness transformation programme. The airline increased revenues from core operations by 1.9% to US$6.1 billion (2016: US$5.9 billion), while reducing losses in the core operations by US$432 million to US$1.52 billion (2016: loss of US$ 1.95 billion). Results published for 2017 are for core airline operations and exclude any extraordinary or one-off items; 2016 figures have been restated to show a like-for-like com-parison. Passenger and cargo yields improved as a result of capacity discipline, changes to the network with an increased focus on point-to-point traffic, leveraging of technology, and improving market conditions. A strong focus on efficiency delivered a 7.3% reduction in unit costs, despite the adverse impact of US$337 million from higher fuel prices. The airline re-duced administration and general expenses by 14%, or US$162 million, over 2016. Etihad Air-ways carried 18.6 million passengers at a 78.5% load factor. Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) increased by 1% in 2017 reflecting a significant moderation of capacity growth and contribut-ing to an improvement in the quality of the airline’s revenues. “This was a pivotal year in Etihad’s transformation journey. The Board, new executive leadership team and all our em-ployees worked extremely hard to navigate the challenges we faced. We made significant pro-gress in driving improved performance and we are on track in 2018.”

Air Partner’s Private Jets business reported an 80% rise in overall US customer numbers, driven by last year’s New York office expansion, the recruitment of new management, and the Air Partner JetCard being recognized as the most flexible US membership program by independent aviation consultancy Conklin & de Decker for the fourth consecu-tive year. Meanwhile, the Commercial Jets and Freight divisions were kept busy responding to customers’ needs in the face of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which hit the U.S. and the Caribbean in September.
Ryanair will open a new base at London South-end, from April 2019, with three based aircraft (an investment of US$300 million) and 13 new routes to eight countries, including Alicante, Barcelona Reus, Bilbao, Brest, Corfu, Cluj, Dub-lin, Faro, Kosice, Malaga, Milan Bergamo, Palma and Venice, which will deliver one million guests annually at London Southend Airport.
With ongoing robust traffic growth in May 2018, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed some 6.1 mil-lion passengers and registered a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year. Factors contrib-uting to this growth included the occurrence in May 2018 of several extended holiday week-ends, as well as school breaks in some German states. In addition, increased capacity on FRA’s European routes spurred passenger growth. During the January-to-May period, FRA achieved accumulated passenger growth of 8.9%. Car-go throughput (airfreight + airmail) dropped
of resources for the company and also answer-ing the majority of the concerns of the Brussels Airlines’ cockpit community. Based on the pro-posal, Brussels Airlines hopes that an agreement can be reached.
Turkish Airlines’ Turkish Cargo has signed a part-nership deal with Chinese cargo giant, ZTO, and Hong Kong-based PAL Air. This partnership is a huge strategic step for Turkey prior to the open-ing of the Istanbul New Airport and is hailed as a game changer for the global express transport business. “The Istanbul New Airport opens on October 29th this year and it will function as Turkish Airlines’ main operating hub. This mega hub will eventually provide Turkish Cargo with up to four million tons of cargo handling capac-ity, becoming one of the top air cargo brands in the world. The joint venture is expected to gen-erate over US$2 billion of revenue, annually, by its fifth year,” said Mr. M. İlker Aycı, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, Turkish Airlines. The services of the new global express joint venture company, which will be based in Hong Kong, will include all door-to-door logis-tics’ activities; trucking, collection & distribu-tion, freight transportation, cross docking and last mile delivery. It will also include warehouse management, and order and supply chain man-agement when necessary. ZTO is the world’s largest parcel distributor, delivering 28 million parcels a day. Recently, global giant Alibaba Group announced it was buying 10% of ZTO Ex-press with an investment of US$1.38 billion.
Swoop has officially been granted its air operat-ing certificate (AOC) approval by Transportation Canada, with just over a week to go until its in-augural flight from Hamilton, ON to Abbotsford, BC. “Receiving our air operators certificate ticks the last check-box,” said Steven Greenway, Presi-dent and Chief Executive Officer, Swoop. “We’re immensely proud of the Swoop inflight, mainte-nance and operations teams for getting us here. And we’re ready for takeoff on June 20.”
Air Partner, the global aviation services group,
practice” which resulted from the cancelation of thousands of flights owing to “organizational and management problems.” The fine is not purely for the fact that the flight cancelations were as a result of administrative failings as op-posed to unforeseen problems beyond the car-rier’s control, but also the failure of Ryanair to correctly inform affected passengers of their right to financial compensation. Instead of being made aware of all options open to them, affect-ed passengers were only offered the choice of changing their ticket or getting a refund. The lev-el of fine was lower than it might have been as Ryanair updated their website in February and contacted all passengers who had been affected, informing them fully of their rights and how they could exercise them. Ryanair’s problems began in September 2017 following a rostering foul-up which saw approaching 700,000 passengers sub-sequently affected by canceled flights through a lack of availability of standby pilots. The then COO Michael Hickey, who was responsible for the pilots’ roster, resigned at the end of October last year as a consequence.
