Welcome to Summer ’16! Which means our beloved 4th of July parade is just around the corner (of Linnie and Grand). Be sure to check out the VCA page for the proper people to contact if you want to get involved this year.

Also in this issue, excited for you to read about the water system David Hertz implemented that pulls and purifies massive amounts of water from the air. And how one of our favorite local causes, The Community Healing Gardens, is using that water to grow local garden boxes. It’s one of my favorite articles we’ve run be-

meet your neighbors

You may have noticed a particularly welcoming butter-yellow house on Sherman Canal, one that seems to have a touch of magic about it … always colorful blossoms, tiny birds and butterflies, the sound of a soft wind chime … slightly fairy-tale’ish. All those good vibes could be because Chris and Gerard have spent the majority of the past couple decades living there in appreciation to be in their favorite place in the world with their favorite person.

20 Years Is A Long Time! What Was The Strongest Attraction When You Met?

CL: He was very kind and I just felt his “goodness” … or maybe it was his long ponytail.

GG: I believe it was her sense of adventure that first at-tracted me. Whether she was hiking through waterfalls or losing to me on the tennis court … she was fun!

CL: I have NO recollection of losing on the tennis court!

What Have You Learned About Partnership Over The Years?

CL: Be open, be flexible and don’t dig your heels in unless it really is a deal breaker.

GG: Years ago we made an agreement that if we were at “odds” about something we would determine the outcome

by evaluating who the issue was most important to and whoever was the least invested would simply let it go. It is an effective way to compromise with-out much drama!

CL: If, however, it is a subject with a lot of emotion attached to it – we have found that sometimes it is better to completely “table” the conversation until we are both ready to talk from a loving place.

What Do You Appreciate Most About The Life You’ve Created Here?

CL: So many things!

Certainly the environment we live in. Two years ago we completely remodeled our 1924 cottage - the house is now so light and airy. When we open the doors in the morning there’s a definite sense of tranquility. The birds are singing, the butterflies are floating about and the squirrels are patiently waiting for peanuts … it’s a pretty magical way to start each day.

And Venice itself has its own unique artsy intel-lectual flavor. Conversations with a neighbor might begin with a discussion about the nature of

consciousness and end with a lively political debate. What’s not to love!?

How Involved Are You With The Community? Why Is It Important To You?

CL: As members of both the VOC and the VCA, we are very grateful to these two organizations for making sure everything is beautifully maintained and well protected. They are also responsible for two wonderful annual events – the 4th of July Regatta with the Rubber Ducky Races and the Holiday Boat Parades!

And the community just keeps getting better and better!

I have to say that this magazine truly is a won-derful addition - the more we know about each other the closer we become as a community and so all the stories about our neighbors are just great!

And then there is the Art Garden…what a monumental success!! It is really becoming a shining example of what “communing” within a community is all about. We know so many more neighbors because of the various events that take place there…movie nights, Sunday Morning Coffee, Canal Conversations and so much more. Saturday morning at the veg-etable garden is a delightful way to talk with neighbors and start your weekend.

GG: I’m big on the environment and have been doing the annual Detox Sunday with Darryl DuFay for 10 years.

What Are Your Thoughts And Feelings About The Changes In The Canals And Ven-ice As A Whole?

CL: Aside from the Art Garden, the first thing that comes to mind is the Monarch Butterfly Waystation started by Darryl DuFay eight years ago. Because of this program you now see butterflies thriving

within our little community. For anyone who wants to support them, plant milkweed (Asclepias Currassavica). As for Venice as a whole - although gentrification makes us a little nervous, we are enjoying the variety of new restaurants that are within walking distance.

heart of veniceBy David Hertz

Sounds like alchemy, but it's not; it's a proven technology and its time is now, and not a moment too soon.

As an architect and pioneer in the field of sustainability and prod-uct development for the last 35 years, one of the major obstacles we face on projects, that desire to become self-reliant or even restorative, is always water.

We have technologies and solutions to almost every other issue, but how to become truly water self-sufficient. We all know that water is our most valuable and vital resource, surprisingly only 2.5% of the water on the planet is fresh. Of that a small percent-age about 1.5% is on or in the ground is potable or accessible. Fortunately, we have yet to “tap the source” as we have an abun-dance of water vapor sequestered in the air. With a residence time of less than a week, water made from the sky is the freshest and purist water available anywhere as it is basically distilled and a majority of the world’s population lives within climate zones to make water from the Troposphere to meet their needs.

Together, we will need multiple solutions to solve our complex relationship with water quality and scarcity; however we do not yet have the technologies in place to adequately do so, as we all know too well that many of the current systems in place are not sufficient as a sustainable long-term solution.

When it comes to clean water, the sky is no longer the limit. The Skywater product is an economical transportable technology that harvests fresh water from the atmosphere. We provide one of the most energy efficient or net zero solutions to potable water using a biomimetic process with our patented technology called adiabatic distillation, to generate sufficient volumes of water as desired. It is antici-pated that there will be sweeping systemic trans-formation over the next decade in the advancement of water technologies and systems to help solve our water crises.

The Skywater units provide scalable decentral-ized, local point of use water systems, from a water cooler sized unit making 14 gallons per day, to a

machine making over 300 gallons per day with a gasifier in the back-ground to fulfill the needs of a small community, to a machine the size of a large air conditioner that produces several thousand gallons per day.

I created skysource.org as a public Benefit B corporation to provide restorative solutions to issues surrounding energy, water and food. I recently installed a Skywater machine at my studio in Venice, just off the boardwalk and we are generating close to 150 gallons of fresh drinking water/day from air, which I am giving away free to the community and those in need through a bottle filling station on the street and for watering the local urban Community Healing Gardens in Oakwood and we are presently installing a PV array for a zero net energy water solution so that we can make our own fresh water for essentially no energy cost.

As the first Jaguar importer to the United States, “Hornburg remains one of the most established and respected Jaguar dealerships in America today.” They have since expanded their inventory to Land Rover vehicles as well. Currently, the collection includes new and used cars,

sponsorspotlight

ranging from Range Rover Evoque to the Jaguar XF 35t Premium.

The car dealership was purchased by a U.K. firm, Pendragon North America Automotive, in 2001. “Since its opening, Hornburg LA has built its reputation on quality service and on extensive product selection. Host-ing multiple events throughout the year, the store maintains a favorable presence in the community. As the only franchised Jaguar dealer in West Hollywood, the dealership is able to

deliver the product and service that the brand is famous for.”

Rebecca Korban, Hornburg LA’s Service Director, is a longstanding employee who understands the Hornburg brand and its customers. “We’ve been here a long time,” says Rebecca, “We value build-ing honest relationships with our customers, as it is important to be honest and fair with them.” This practice has led to an overwhelming 148 percent customer retention.

Every customer is welcomed with a smile (and sometimes a hug) from Hornburg’s established

greeter, Paco, who has been with the company for over 25 years. Rebecca says, “It’s fun and nice to see a cus-tomer greeted by him. That’s another example of how this is a family envi-ronment. A smile from him, no matter what kind of day the customer was having before they arrived, brings a smile to my face.”

Hornburg LA is not only good to its customers, but their employees as well. “I love that I’m able to hold a high position as a female in a male-dominated industry” comments Rebecca. She has been promoted multiple times, which is not as com-

mon among women within the car dealership industry. Rebecca continues, “Just having the trust and support of my leadership team to run one of the biggest stores means a lot to me.” Because she has built relationships with her coworkers over time, Hornburg LA is a great environment and a second home to her.

This year, Hornburg LA is striving to continue to grow and exceed last year’s Jaguar and Land Rover sales goals. A new valet service for automobile drop-offs is also a work in progress.

To find out more information on Hornburg, please call 310-432-5900 or visit hornburg.com.

In the name, H o m E, there is the sound of “om” … a sense of connection, an affirma-tion of the divine and the special, a feeling of YES, this is it! It’s how an object, an existence, or a space affects each person.

H o m E was created for the sense of experi-ence, a sense of instant connection!

I want every person’s experience of H o m E to include scent // energy // people // cleanliness // design. The scent is the first thing you will notice when you walk into a space. Scents trigger memories, feelings, and emotion. Energy comes from an inmost con-sciousness. The positive energy will make you feel good while being here. The people set the tone of your stay, from your initial booking all way through to the moment you check out. I want guests to feel as if they are the first to ever sleep in the room; that divine sense of cleanliness when coming into a brand new space. The design is thought-ful, current, and creates a calming welcome where a person feels completely at H o m E.

The design concept is based on my Venice experiences. Venice has so many layers: an artist’s studio, a sun-drenched beach, a wild adventure, or a wellness haven. Each travel-er gets to decide which layer they would like to unfold during their stay. Similarly, each of the units offers art and texture, which com-bine for a unique, individual experience.

My vision for H o m E has many facets. It’s a room next door when the neighbors have guests in town. It’s a place for the traveler who wants more than just a bed – for those in search of a sense of community. To enhance your Venice exploration, there are bikes, surf-boards, and a canal boat available for use!

H o m E: a reflection of my own home. I’m excited to welcome new friends to Venice.

If you would like to experience H o m E, contact me at [email protected].

HOW DID YOU START CREATING ARTWORK?I’ve been creating my entire life. As a child I would draw minia-ture scenes with fine-tip pens I’d take from my dad. Growing up living on the Big Island of Hawaii near the ocean and immersed in nature allowed me space for imagination and creation. As a young child my family moved to California and I continued studies in illustration, printmaking and figure drawing for years. In college I majored in design and once graduating started a design company that I run today. Alongside design, my personal artwork continued to develop and my path became clear - to create images that would uplift and remind us of our connection to Mother Nature and to honor all life.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR ARTWORK?This amazing world we get to live in! Being a woman, living in this body designed to create life. Nature and connection to the many forms of the Goddess. Archetypes reminding us of ancient wisdom embodied, symbolism, mythology, meaningful representations of the new world we want to live in, the world we can co-create.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS SO SPECIAL OR UNIQUE ABOUT THE ART COMMUNITY IN VENICE?Venice is a special place, a magical haven for artists and people living the road less traveled. It’s always been a place that celebrates counterculture and this is what has drawn me here - I’m on a journey and it’s an atypical one. So I need to be around atypical people to remind myself I can live this way, it’s ac-cepted and here, even celebrated. Community is very important for artists, we need to feel supported and encouraged. Street art, performance culture and design aesthetic from shop signs, to murals, to graffiti on trash cans all contribute to the energy here. Venice keeps this spirit alive for us.

DO YOU FIND OTHER LOCAL ARTISTS WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS AND AESTHETICS AS YOURS?Venice definitely attracts simi-lar types of artists, and every-one’s art is a unique expression. I love that many artists are inspired to work figuratively here, and I’ve been meeting more of this type of artist. Overall I haven’t met too many artists who are working with oils, combining installation design with exhibits, building altars and creating sacred envi-ronments around the artwork. I’m looking to discover more female artists with similar aes-thetics to work with and build on this inspiration together.

WHAT ROLE DO YOU HOPE YOUR ART PLAYS WHEN IN SOMEONE’S HOME?As a reminder of the beauty in the world and how blessed we all are. It’s easy to live our busy modern day lives without taking a moment to pause and remem-ber the beauty, love, magic, depths and layers of connection we have with nature and her many cycles. The feminine is a beautiful symbol for this life force that lives within us all, as we all came from a woman. I hope it reminds us to live in reverence, whatever that means to you. To live in celebration, in every waking breath and mo-ment. I paint on bones to remind us of death, to remind us how short this life is. To treasure it, because we don’t know if tomor-row will come, and nothing is guaranteed. I hope the artwork inspires us to live every moment as if it were our last.

"I needed hardwood flooring for a modern rental unit I was building. I found Universal Hardwood on the Internet. They were super helpful,

understood what I was looking for and showed me several choices in my price

range. I purchased beautiful maple engineered hardwood floors. They handled all my post sale questions

efficiently and helped my contractor load the flooring onto the truck. Parking is easy, right on the street. I will never go anyplace else for hardwood floors."

Need to get your outdoor spaces ready for entertaining? These are a few summertime projects to make your home the hot spot for backyard barbecues.

4. Build A Raised GardenWarm weather is perfect for growing your favorite fruits and vegetables right in your own backyard. Build a raised garden bed with stones or simple 2x4s purchased from your local home improvement store. Fill with soil and start planting your toma-toes, lettuce and peppers.

5. Add Landscape LightingNothing adds evening ambiance like accent light-ing. Complement the fireflies in your backyard by installing some exterior lighting to pathways, decks and pools. Your family and friends will thank you for making your outdoor spaces easy to navigate once the sun goes down.

6. Install A Fire PitWhile some summer nights may be too warm for sitting around a fire, this is the perfect time to install a brand new fire pit. Whether you choose to build a custom structure or purchase a pre-assem-bled one, a fire pit will make your outdoor space livable well into the autumn months.

7. Add A ScreenAre pesky mosquitoes keeping you from enjoying your back porch to its full potential? Add new posts and screening to create a barrier. This will allow you to enjoy the sunsets and breezes while mini-mizing the uncomfortable bug bites.

SUMMER

1. Build A DeckNowhere to set up your grill? Build a simple platform-style deck on-grade. You’ll only need basic tools, lumber and a few concrete piers, plus what-ever stain or paint you choose.

2. Create An Outdoor KitchenSpeaking of that grill, consider bringing in a de-signer to help plan out the perfect outdoor kitchen. Many home improvement stores also offer pre-de-signed outdoor kitchen sets. With a sink, refrigera-tor and bar top, you’ll be ready to host your first summer party in no time.

3. Buy New Patio FurnitureWith all of the time you’ll be spending outside, be sure to invest in some high-quality patio furniture. Consider a dining set with an anti-corrosive finish and weather-proof fabric to ensure that it will with-stand the elements and changing seasons.
